I really question Bernie's electability. Like he will carry the liberal left with ease and that's great. Could probably take Colorado. But I see him having trouble in the Midwest or Virginia, which is something of a bigger issue.

But again, it's August. We're a year out from the conventions, and like six months from the primaries. The Dems haven't even had a debate yet. The polls are kinda shit for predicative value (though Bernie taking New Hampshire wouldn't be the most surprising thing).

Speaking of shit: Rick Perry's running out of cash. He's stopped paying his South Carolina staff. Basically, Perry didn't have huge money to begin with for the obvious reasons, he's already tried and failed. But nevertheless, he made a huge push to try to get into the prime time debate instead of the junior one. He became a very outspoken critic of Trump (Trump=free media) and did a load of ad buys. It didn't work at all, and he's not looking any better after the debate. So now he's looking at money troubles (which don't look like they'll be improving), he has little support, and it looks like Iowa's turned itself off from him. He may be the first to go, unless Lindsay Graham decides he's made enough of an impression already for a Secretary of State nod.

He appeals to a lot of Eisenhower republicans and Rand Paul supporters. Also the fact that he says exactly what he is going to do, and doesn't spew slogans, talk about his past, etc, is very refreshing and appealing to people. After the BLM interruption, he laid out a very concise plan about how he is going to deal with black issues.

Bernie does a lot of things that would make America better if lots of politicians did them, but American politics/media is both conservative and corrupt so that's unlikely to get him very far. If you buy in to the idea that new media can propel someone in to stardom on its own then you can see Bernie going further but I don't so.

New Media launched Justin Bieber into stardom (regrettably), so why not someone that actually matters. Bernie Sanders' policies appeal to a vast majority of the American people, both from Democrats and non-extremist Republicans. The two biggest challenges he faces are Hillary Clinton and no name recognition. If he overcomes the former, the "corrupt" media are forced to help him with the latter. The biggest issue to me seems (as stated in the poll where he actually beats Clinton) despite a LOT of people saying they'll vote for him (to the point of him taking the state) they also don't think he'll win the primaries in the end. That kind of thinking will mean people vote for Clinton because "it doesn't really matter anyway" and is the biggest hurdle for him to overcome imo.

The difference is that old media and old power cares not whether Bieber gets fame because he'll have no real power and make the relevant people lots of money.

Old media and old power really does not have anything to gain if Bernie makes it.

True, but old media can't really censor new media. And I highly doubt old media played a big part in the Bieber thing.

What is Sanders' position on Palestine? One of the things I loved about Obama was that he didn't kowtow to AIPAC the way that Clinton and W. Bush did. Just think of all the times that Biden would talk about "Bibi" (ugh ) and then Obama would practically flip Netanyahu the bird and say, "Yeah, no, we're not going to strangle relations with the people of the Middle East just because you hate Iran and want to build more settlements in the West Bank." The Republican candidates have all already declared their bitch status with Israel, and Hillary Clinton's not likely to differ from her husband either, so it falls to -- of all people -- the man that one Imgurian referred to as a "crypto-Jew" :') *sigh* to stand up to the pro-Israeli lobbyists and say, "Look. We want to pursue what's right, not what's best for only you."

It'd be cool to have an awesome Jewish president, but the last thing I want is all of Obama's efforts to re-open relations with Iran undermined by someone who answers to Netanyahu.

Good news for supporters of Bernie Sanders: the petitions to CNN to lift their blackout on him worked- they've started posted numerous articles about him!

Honestly, a really major problem for Sanders few people are touching upon is his age, unfortunately enough. He'll be 75 on the day he takes office should he win. That's older than any President has been while taking the oath in American history. We'd be awfully lucky to get two full terms out of him.

So long as he's not senile and can prove it, I don't much care about the age arguments. Age only matters to me as it usually goes hand in hand with senility, but we also know that diseases like Alzheimer's can strike as early as one's 30s, which with the vast majority of presidential candidates being 50 years of age or older means that it's a free for all as far as problems of senility, dementia, etc. are concerned. All world leaders should be routinely checked for signs of dementia and other mental illnesses that would seriously impact their ability to govern, and since a mentally fit 80-year old theoretically trumps a demented 55-year old, I see no problem with Sanders running despite his age.

I do, however, see a problem for him as far as his choice of running mate is concerned. Make it Elizabeth Warren or similar and we're golden. Make it Joe Biden or Hillary Clinton or similar and it's a redo of John McCain's disastrous vice presidential pick in 2008. People were scared by the thought of Sarah Palin being just one heart attack away from the Oval Office, and that's a fear that will return in near full force given Sanders' age if he picks the wrong candidate for vice president. He must choose someone that we're as happy having for president as we would be having Sanders himself. Otherwise he's going to lose scores of moderate voters to the Republican ticket (assuming the ticket ends up in the hands of a moderate Republican instead of someone who panders to the Tea Party).

Elizabeth Warren, I believe, has expressed interest in being Bernie's running mate. You're right, a Sanders/Warren ticket would be pretty grand.

I don't know why people were so worried about John McCain dying in office and unleashing President Palin on the world. McCain's frickin mother is still alive!

Probably because the Presidency is one of the most stressful jobs in the world and you end up aging a whole lot more than you normally would from it.

Spoiler: show

There's our last three presidents, before and after office. Shit takes its toll :p

It's also been that we've had three middle aged presidents, during which aging really starts to take a noticeable effect.

If John McCain got elected, I don't think he'd have looked too different later. But Obama does, I think, look the most different from how he was in 2008.

Trump broadcasts he's an anti-vaccer.

Not like I was gonna vote for the guy anyway, but that's like a death sentence on top of a death sentence.

Well I mean I wouldn't be surprised if he enacted double death sentences into law if he was elected

And yet, that appeals to the Republican core- the incredibly stupid.

So I know that this isn't the British Politics thread but I don't think we have one of those so I'm posting this here. I was reading a thread on another site about the 2008 election when I came across this comment.
"Anyway, Davud cammmeronn neeeds to be a goood man or I will coooome a nd give hiiim baddd touch" followed by five angry faces.

It's only posted in all the time, two and a half months older than this thread, and right here.

Also my irl friend group seems to support Deez Nuts for president, some because its funny and some because they actually agree with his views.

Oh well then thank you so much for pointing me to the thread that is sobviously about British Politics that it doesn't even need to be named for British Politics. How silly of me to overlook that obvious answer.

In fairness I should have remembered to include the brackets when originally posting.

Will ask Jeri if he can either do that or make a debate thread directory to include the more commonly used generic threads.
