Surely, the NeoKnight Gym had never been so hot. Sweat formed on Jake Celeste's brow seconds after he entered. The Trainer could have sworn the Raid Boss this time was a Heatran! Thankfully, it wasn't. Just a Coalossal. From Galar, Jake guessed. It wasn't a Pokémon he was familiar with.

Buizel, Jake's starter Pokémon, stood by the training Aura Guardian's side. He was Jake's choice for this battle, and not without good reason. This Raid Boss had to be a Fire-type and a Rock-type, since the den was heating up quickly, and Rock was one of this Gym's specialties. What better way to counter both Fire and Rock than Water? And Ground, of course, but Jake's Tympole hadn't learned any Water-type moves yet, much less evolved.

Jake pulled out his high-tech Pokédex and scanned the Coalossal. He had to see what kind of Pokémon it was.

Coalossal, the Coal Pokémon. A Rock and Fire-type. While it's engaged in battle, its mountain of coal will burn bright red, sending off sparks that scorch the surrounding area.

Just as Jake suspected. He put his Pokédex away and turned to Buizel. "Ready for your first Max Raid Battle?"

"Buizel!" the Sea Weasel Pokémon grinned. He was ready to face his opponent and put out that fire for the sake of everyone here!

"Alright!" Jake smiled. "Then let's get started!"

Jake paused for a moment to consider the options Buizel had. Really only Water Gun and Waterfall. The latter move packed more power, but it was also a move that made contact, and Jake didn't know if Coalossal had the Ability Flame Body. The former move, meanwhile, was weaker but the safer option.

In the end, however, Jake went with power, not playing safe. He was going to take his chances! What if the Coalossal didn't have Flame Body after all? That precaution would have been a waste. "Now, Buizel! Soak that Coalossal with your Waterfall!" he instructed.

"Bui!" Buizel deftly struck the ground with his hands despite the heat. The ground cracked, and seconds later, a gushing torrent of water rose out of the crack. Buizel jumped onto the water and delivered a watery blow to the Dynamax Boss, "Zel!", before landing back in front of Jake. The water died down and seeped back into the crack.

"Nice job, Buizel!" Jake commented. "Let's start to see more of that bravery!"

(OOC: Buizel uses Waterfall (80 BP) as his first move.)

Max Raid Boss Coalossal
★★★★
Health Gauge: 78%
Shields Up: 0
Status: Whirlpool (1), Harsh Sunlight (1)

Raid Boss Attack Summary:

Attack 1: Max Flare (140 BP)
CrazyCreeperKid, Clauncher: 142 HP
Attack 2: Stone Edge (100 BP)
Zorchic, Buizel: 180HP

Raid Challengers:
  • Connor (Slowking): 300 HP
  • CrazyCreeperKid (Clauncher): 142 HP
  • Slash (Spinda): 300 HP (+1 Atk, +1 Def)
  • Zorchic (Buizel): 180HP

Spinda rushes forward heroically as the rest of the Raiders douse the Raid Boss with water. A hiss rings out as the water strikes the Coalossal, evaporating and leaving the Raid Boss feeling the hurt. Spinda slams it with a Superpower, its Contrary ability rewarding it rather than punishing it.

Gathering a massive ball of fire, the Raid Boss seems to be in the mood for barbecued shrimp as it smashes Clauncher with a powerful Max Flare. To make matters worse, the heat in the cavern intensifies, it seems the Coalossal has found a way to damped the obvious barrage of water attacks. It then summons stones from deep within the earth to smash Buizel, leaving the sea weasel reeling in pain.

Dynamax Initiative: Connor, Slowking

Another Whirlpool (35 BP) since I'm pretty sure that is my strongest attack which won't also merk my teammates.

So far, the battle was...iffy. Three of the four raiders pummeled the Raid Boss with Water-type moves, one of which trapped Coalossal in a swirling Whirlpool. However, the Rock/Fire-type fought back with a Max Flare that pushed back the Clauncher and also strengthened the sunlight.

"Great," Jake muttered. "The last thing we need is more heat."

To add to that, the Dynamax Boss also summoned a Stone Edge from the ground, tossing Buizel back. Ouch. Buizel had taken that very attack when Jake took him, among Jake's other Pokémon, to the Lake of the Moon, and the crazed Barbaracle hit him with the move. It wasn't a very pleasant memory.

"Buizel, you okay?" Jake asked cautiously.

"Bui..." Buizel had been knocked on his back by the sharp stones, and now he struggled to his feet. He was fine for now.

"That was a hard hit," Jake remarked. "As long as you're still good to go, let's attack! It looks like Coalossal is pretty close to pulling up its energy barriers, so we can afford to play it safe this time around."

Buizel nodded. That made enough sense.

"In that case," Jake began, "now use Water Gun on that Dynamaxed Coalossal, Buizel!"

Buizel let out a loud cry as he released a stream of water from his mouth at the Raid Boss. Hopefully, the Slowking's Whirlpool would be enough to force the shields up at this point.

"And uh, would you mind dousing me with a light spray of Water Gun, too?" Jake asked sheepishly, tugging at the collar of his own shirt. "It's burning hot in here."

Buizel chuckled, as if to say, Of course. He turned and spit a Water Gun right in Jake's face, which elicited a jokey comment of protest from the Trainer.

"Hey! Alright, alright, just focus on the battle now."

The Sea Weasel Pokémon grinned and turned back to the battle.

(OOC: Buizel uses Water Gun (40 BP) this time around. Also, I forgot to mention, but Buizel's held Aegis of Frost reduces physical damage done to him by 25%.)

Max Raid Boss Coalossal
★★★★
Health Gauge: 71%
Shields Up: 2
Status: Whirlpool (2), Harsh Sunlight (2), +1 Atk

Raid Boss Attack Summary:

Attack 1: Max Knuckle (90 BP)
CrazyCreeperKid, Clauncher: 52 HP
Attack 2: High Horsepower (95 BP)
Zorchic, Buizel: 99HP

Raid Challengers:
  • Connor (Slowking): 300 HP
  • CrazyCreeperKid (Clauncher): 52 HP
  • Slash (Spinda): 300 HP (+2 Atk, +2 Def)
  • Zorchic (Buizel): 99HP

Water strikes the raid boss once more, less effectively than before but still enough to force the Raid Boss to throw up shields after a couple of hits. Spinda and Clauncher break a shield each, before the Raid Boss starts to fire back.

A giant fist descends from above, crushing Clauncher again and boosting the Raid Boss's attack in the process. It then takes aim at Buizel once more, this time charging at the Water type with High Horsepower. Buizel picks himself up after being trampled, still holding on, albeit slightly better than Clauncher at this point.

Dynamax Initiative: Slash, Spinda
  • Trainers may only list 1 order per round. They are also permitted to using 1 item in lieu of an attack.
  • Dynamax Initiative will select a trainer at random. If a trainer has initiative, they may choose to Dynamax their Pokemon for a duration of 3 turns. Dynamaxed Pokemon may only select a Max Attack of a corresponding type from their registered moveset, or Max Guard in place of status moves.
  • If a hold item or ability’s effect is activated in the present round as a result of the previous round’s damage calculation or the present round’s orders, please state it clearly in your response.
  • If a trainer’s Pokemon is rendered unconscious, they may choose to cheer on their allies; opting to either remove one shield from the raid boss or healing one ally’s Pokemon by 50% of their max health.
  • Roleplaying your orders is optional, but $250 may be collected for responses of 250 words or greater, and Bond will accumulate only for the trainer’s active Pokemon in battle.
  • You have until Saturday, May 9th to place your order.

Max Raid Boss Coalossal
★★★★
Health Gauge: 62%
Shields Up: 0
Status: Whirlpool (3), Harsh Sunlight (3), +1 Atk

Raid Boss Attack Summary:

Attack 1: Tar Shot (0 BP)
CrazyCreeperKid, Clauncher: 52 HP
Attack 2: Rock Slide (75 BP)
Connor (Slowking): 187 HP[*] CrazyCreeperKid (Clauncher): 0 HP[*] Slash (Spinda): 210 HP [*] Zorchic (Buizel): 0 HP

Raid Challengers:
  • Connor (Slowking): 187 HP
  • CrazyCreeperKid (Clauncher): 0 HP [KO'd, Fully Recovers in One Round]
  • Slash (Spinda): 210 HP (+3 Atk, +3 Def)
  • Zorchic (Buizel): 0 HP [KO'd, Fully Recovers in One Round]

The shields are broken through quickly, allowing the other raids to bring the hurt. They continue to chip away at the Raid Boss, but there is a sense of dread in the air.

Coalossal spews forth a stream of tar, soaking Clauncher with it. The sticky substance looks incredibly flammable, the Water type wouldn't be safe if a Fire attack came his way. It doesn't matter all that much though as the Raid Boss crushes the entire raiding party with a Rock Slide. While Spinda and Slowking manage to pull themselves out of the rubble, Buizel and Clauncher are both left unconscious.

Dynamax Initiative: Connor, Slowking

They had seen it coming. Almost everyone had seen it coming. Even so, Jake refused to believe it until the evidence was right as his feet. A Rock Slide rained down on the raiders' Pokémon and knocked the already hurt Buizel back. The Sea Weasel Pokémon struggled to stand up, and Jake saw that, quickly rushing to catch his starter before Buizel collapsed and hurt himself beyond repair.

"It's okay, Buizel," Jake said, seemingly calmly. "For now, just take a rest. You won't go down that easily in the future! We can always cheer up an ally. That's one thing I learned from fighting that Hatterene..." he trailed off.

"Bui..." Buizel murmured sadly, feeling like he let his Trainer down.

"Yeah, I know how you must feel," Jake reassured Buizel as they both sat down on the ground. "Getting knocked out in your first Max Raid Battle isn't the best experience. Don't worry, you're still one of my most trusted Pokémon. 'Most nothing can change that. I can assure you, you'll be up and running faster than you can say 'Dynamax Energy', thanks to this Power Spot!" With that, he glanced at his Dynamax Band, and just as he expected, it was glowing with a faint amount of Dynamax Energy. "Watch this!" he exclaimed as he pointed the band at the ally Slowking and fired a beam of red light at the Water/Psychic-type.

Buizel looked over at the Slowking, and then back at Jake. What's that?

"That's the energy granted to me while my battler is knocked out," Jake explained. "I can use it to heal one of our allies! They'll get the same amount of health restored to them as can be restored with Heal Pulse."

The orange Water-type smiled. His Trainer certainly had it under control, it seemed.

(OOC: Cheering to heal Connor's Slowking.)

Okay I think it's time to Dynamax since I regretted it so much last time.

Dynamaxing, then using a Surf (90 BP) fuelled Max Geyser.

Max Raid Boss Coalossal
★★★★
Health Gauge: 45%
Shields Up: 4
Status: Whirlpool (4), Harsh Sunlight (1), +1 Atk, Burn Up

Raid Boss Attack Summary:

Attack 1: Max Flare (140 BP)
Slash, Spinda: 195 HP
Attack 2: Burn Up (130 BP)
Connor (Slowking): 280 HP

Raid Challengers:
  • Connor (Slowking): 280 HP (Dynamaxed, 2 turns remaining)
  • CrazyCreeperKid (Clauncher): 300 HP [Fully Recovered]
  • Slash (Spinda): 195 HP (+4 Atk, +4 Def)
  • Zorchic (Buizel): 300 HP [Fully Recovered]

With two raiders down, its now or never as Slowking dynamaxes to square off with the Raid Boss. First call of duty is removing the Harsh Sunlight, which a Max Geyser does, replacing it with a downpour of rain. With Spinda's help, the Coalossal is forced to set up its second set of shields.

Not pleased with the change in weather, Coalossal quickly switches it back as it slams Spinda with a Max Flare. With the sunlight scorching once more, Coalossal decides its time to reveal its trump card. Gathering every ounce of Fire energy it has, it blasts Slowking with a Burn Up! With that combo of moves, Coalossal has managed to completely remove its Water type weakness that the raiders were so intent on abusing!

Dynamax Initiative: Connor, Slowking
  • Trainers may only list 1 order per round. They are also permitted to using 1 item in lieu of an attack.
  • Dynamax Initiative will select a trainer at random. If a trainer has initiative, they may choose to Dynamax their Pokemon for a duration of 3 turns. Dynamaxed Pokemon may only select a Max Attack of a corresponding type from their registered moveset, or Max Guard in place of status moves.

Things certainly looked better, as Slowking Dynamaxed and used Max Geyser in an attempt to get rid of the sunny weather. Alas, it was not for long, as Coalossal promptly used Max Flare to bring the sun back up. The Dynamax Boss followed up with a Burn Up on Slowking, removing its Fire type and quadruple Water weakness.

But when Jake and Buizel saw this, they just smirked. "As if we don't have other options," Jake remarked. "Getting rid of the Fire type opens up more of the Rock-type's weaknesses, even if Water is not one of them."

"Bui, Buizel," Buizel agreed. Namely Grass. And of course, Fighting still has an advantageous matchup.

"You all ready to go, Buizel?" Jake asked, which was met with a determined "Zel!"

The Aura Guardian grinned as Buizel was healed by the Dynamax Energy. By now, both Trainer and Pokémon were on their feet. "Great!" Jake said. "Then let's get ready to attack! Coalossal's put up some shields, I see."

Buizel excitedly put his hands forward, ready to form a spherical orb of energy, but Jake held up his own hand. "Not so fast. We don't need to expend more of our energy than usual and reveal our secret weapon early. Let's just be simple this time, shall we?"

"Bui..." The Sea Weasel Pokémon reluctantly lowered his hands.

Jake nodded. "Then hit that shield with a Water Gun!"

Buizel immediately opened his mouth and let loose a stream of water at Coalossal—or more accurately, its shield, which shattered upon impact.

(OOC: I'm getting more and more convinced that the Raid Bosses' moves aren't just RNG'd.

Buizel uses Water Gun (40 BP).)
