We open with The Morg's spriting request for biggggg5, in which Morg reassures his requester that "...even though he's only a few pixels tall, he's still... Big!"

Big isn't the biggest, buffest guy around ironically, but he definitely isn't the smallest. He is about 5'11 and weighs about 180 pounds. Most of it is pooled in his stomach because he will eat what tastes good. However he wears slightly large t-shirts so that his stomach is not obvious. To most onlookers he seems to be average. He has short dark brown hair, so dark it can be confused as black, especially when it gets wet but he will insist on it being brown. His eyes are blue-green but he wears glasses with thin frames that transition in the sun to sunglasses so people will not often notice his eye color. As said before he wears baggy plain t-shirts of different colors and blue jeans unless it gets cold then he'll wear a green hoodie.

We begin the Wild Card request posts with some fighting words, these words coming from Connor to phoopes. I don't mean they're going to fight, I mean there's fighting. You know!

As far as the eye could see, the sky was blotted out by the angry curtain, the gods' way of punishing those below. Frigid rain fell all around the surroundings, each petered drop more like a falling icicle to the exposed skin. Despite the loud rumblings from the clouds each time a bolt struck the exposed earth, there were sounds which could be heard over the roaring cacophony of nature. Metal rang against metal as blade met blade, blood curdling cries ringing from the fallen while the victorious rallied on, only to be cleaved down in their own right mere moments later. For, while cloud covered the skies, bodies littered the floor.

He was late. Numerous things had come together to delay his arrival at the battlefield, but the weight of responsibility crushed his shoulders all the same. The mud underfoot was sodden with rain and blood, each footstep sinking for a moment before being heaved forth from the sludge. At his waist his hand clamped over the scabbard holding his familial heirloom, an intricate yet sturdy weapon, it had been passed through the generations, the sword which signifying he was the leader of these lands. The motion was subconscious, a desperate means of holding onto what seemed all too certain to be ripped from him. Were that his destiny, he knew he would have to accept - but he would not accept gladly. He would fight to the last man, the last drop of blood. At his side ran his sigil bearer, a man who he had shared his life with, the pair brought up together as lord and vassal. The two solitary figures hurriedly weaved through the trees which skirted the main battlefield, knowing that they would soon enter the fray in an attempt to rally the troops. Nothing could prepare the duo for what awaited them.

As they broke from the cover of the trees, the first thing to assault them was the smell. The abrupt stench of death was the first thing to make them falter, but it was not what brought their rush grinding to a halt. Bodies lay everywhere, that much was obvious, but the majority of the casualties were their own. No matter where their eyes went, for every foe four of their own had capitulated. The odds were stacked against them to begin with - now they seemed impossible. His eyes wide, the lord knew in that moment there would only be one way to win this battle. Nodding to his sigil bearer, the pair rush into the mass of bodies still fighting, each of them easily parting the crowd with darted motions. Their blades cleave a path forth as they rush from body to body, working beautifully in tandem and dying the surroundings crimson. The brief push reinvigorates the remaining soldiers, and they push on behind their commanders, and the tide of battle begins to turn. The combatant pair continue to slaughter their way through the crowd, staggering their individual push to gain as much ground as possible. Then, out of nowhere, an unfamiliar blade explodes through a nearby enemy. It hurtles through the neck of the sigil bearer, his body falling limp as the life drains from him almost instantly. As his body falls to the ground, a laughter echoes around the surroundings. The enemy commander had shown himself.

The enemy commander could only be described as a mountain. He towered over his counterpart, and every aspect of his body was hardened by war. His limbs were thick with muscle, but the way he carried himself spoke of a much more elegant battle styke. His blade shimmered through the air as he cut down more men in a show of force, before his frenzied gaze fell upon the lord. The two in that moment made an unspoken agreement, one which had stood the test of time long before they had even been conceived. Whichever of these two left the field alive would be considered the victor, irrespective of the fighting force left in their passing wake. With a murderous roar of intent, the enemy brings his sword swinging round as something of a greeting card, the wide arc one which was easily blocked. To dodge would hurt his pride, and so our lord brings his sword up to meet that of his foes, realising that this was his first mistake. In terms of raw power, the balance was tipped heavily against him, and as metal sheared upon metal, his bones ached in response. His arm briefly went numb as he was swatted away as simply as one may swat a fly. Emboldened by this, the enemy commander was upon him in mere moments, raining down a savage repertoire of blows. Each one was aimed at a weakness in the defence of his opponent, each thrust and slash potentially deadly. With some concerted effort, the lord pushes himself away to gather his bearings, resetting his stance and daring his foe to come within his range. The monster obliged happily.

Closing the distance with one fell swoop, the enemy brought a swinging hammer blow down hard onto the raised guard of his opponent, but the lord managed to deftly shirk to one side, allowing the blow to travel down into the mud. With a step insude the guard of his foe, the lord makes a simple thrust for the neck, aiming to end his foe in the same manner his friend was ended mere moments before, but the brute manages at the last second to pull back, arcing a blow upwards into the flank of the lord. Gritting his teeth against the pain, each blow clattering against his guard sending reverberations of numbness spreading through his form, the lord stands stalwart all the same. For every blow that landed clean against his flesh, he managed to land a nick of his own, and for the longest time the pair seemed to be suspended in slow motion, the armies of both men watching on with baited breaths as their lieges pitted against one another. Finally, it seemed like the lord would take the upper hand. A swift cut to the forearm of his foe saw the monster drop his sword, and with a triumphant roar, the lord aims for the neck.

Only to stop his thrust abruptly. Standing, the blood drains from his face as he takes two uncertain steps backwards, a red line having been drawn across his neck. Dropping his sword, his fingers go to his neck, feeling the warmth of his life pulsating through his fingers, and with a sickening realisation he notices a second, shorter sword in his opponents good hand. He had kept it concealed until the critical moment, the time when the lord had dropped his guard entirely. The moment in which he believed victory had been grasped, it had been violently and suddenly tore from his grips. With a thud, the lord falls to the ground, the last vestiges of his life force ebbing from him as all around him, his soldiers are put to the same sword that he fell to. The last moments of his life seemed to last an eternity, the screams of the fallen filling his ears while the dank musk of blood and mud filled his lungs.

I hate Murkrow.

They are foul, filthy, frightful beings.

Not beautiful and grand, like the majestic Suicune.

My grandfather used to tell me stories about it: how it is said to be the reincarnation of a perished Pokémon, embued with life and power by the legendary Ho-Oh. Embodying the north wind, so that one mysteriously blows whenever it appears. How it races free across the land, through towns and roads at simply awesome speeds, in search of a pure reservoir. …Supposedly, its grace can even instantly purify dirty, polluted water with but a mere touch.

And now, I have finally traveled to the place of its origin: Ecruteak City, the most historical and mythical settlement in the Johto region, home to the ten-story Bell Tower – a hallowed shrine of high sanctity – and the remains of its fallen brother, the Brass Tower, where the three Legendary Beasts were born anew. Among them Suicune, representing the rains that finally quenched the roaring blaze, which had by then burned the blessed belfry down, entrapping a trio of innocent souls within.

I can only hope to someday catch a glimpse of such magnificent splendor, to bask in its holy presence. To be cleansed by its baptism.

This world is such a wretched, ugly place. It is no wonder the gods have forsaken it.

Back in Kanto, my hometown of Celadon was easily overtaken by commercialism. Ever since that damn department store opened up, businesses and buildings kept growing. Hotels, condominiums, and worst of all – the blasted “Game Corner” – all constructed to support the booming tourism, catering to the whims of passing people who cared not for respecting the environment, came only to spend their cash on shopping and gambling. Frittering time and money away in the name of fun – at our precious ecosystem’s expense. Contamination and corruption ran rank, to the point Grimer would gravitate to the city’s sewers by swarm. Even the small pond I used to play by when younger became infested with them. Grandfather and I once often fed fish there – now the Magikarp and Goldeen have all but disappeared.

And of course, there were the Murkrow.

I despised them as much as the vile human visitors who sullied my fair city. They too flocked to the sin and decadence, lurking just on the outskirts, roosting right on the route connecting to Saffron. Waiting to harass any unwary passersby late at night. Especially those who carried shiny coins in their purses, drunk from partying and playing at the casino – or any gaudy, glittering accessories on their person. …Although I utterly loathed the crows’ thieving tendencies (not to mention messy habits), sometimes I was tempted to purposefully direct such flashy, unsuspecting tourists to the path when they curiously questioned me – a cheeky child local back then – just to watch them get their comeuppance by losing their rings and watches; but my neighbor Miss Erika would scold me, saying “a gentleman does not lead others astray”.

She too migrated from this region’s locale, along with my grandfather. Unlike the toxic wastedump where I was forced to grow up, the people here have at least preserved some semblance of civil tradition and the arts. One such example is the performance being put on before me: A group of young girls – likely about my age – dancing (not-so) gracefully in old-fashioned kimono upon the stage. The Ecruteak Dance Hall was another attraction Grandfather often spoke fondly of before his passing, and while these “novices-in-training” are not nearly as elegant and refined as Miss Erika, I can appreciate their first earnest attempts at something sophisticated – if somewhat clumsy about it.

At the end, each takes a finishing bow with a flourish, and I join in the light applause. Afterwards, one of the littlest ladies approaches me to refill my teacup, serving with a shy, nervous smile as she seemingly struggles not to spill the pot’s contents.

“I’ve not seen you around before, stranger. Where are you from?”

“I hail from Celadon City, of the Kanto Region.”

“My, that’s quite far. What is your name?”

Instinctively, my courage falters, but I steel myself and forge ahead anyway.

“Eusine.”

The vessel tips a bit as she surreptitiously raises a sleeve to her mouth, endeavoring not-so-successfully to smother a snicker.

“Forgive me, I’ve just never heard of such a… rather odd name. Your clothes are quite… interesting as well. Do all foreigners dress as boldly as you?”

I sigh, used to such typical reaction upon initial introductions. Needless to say I endured much mocking for the outmoded moniker (and so-called “strange” sense of style) during my elementary years. I try to divert by turning the conversation around instead.

“What is your name?”

She coughs and composes herself, straightening with a smile.

“I am called Zuki.”

“You have a lovely barrette, Miss Zuki.”

“You like it?” She blushes as she reaches up to touch the floral pin beside her ear, tucked neatly into her bunned black hair, combed back smooth as the silk she was draped in. “I wear it for luck during recital.”

“It is quite pretty.”

I compliment again, and she flushes deeper.

“Thank you. I put a different flower in it every month. This is an Osceola's Plume.”

I startle, surprised by the choice. While the lily looked lovely, it had a deceitful reputation.

“Aren’t those poisonous?”

She giggles again.

“If you’re from Celadon, I take it you must know of Lady Erika. She was our senior and best performer, as well as my idol. She creates the most fragrant perfumes from poisons, does she not?”

“Well, yes, I suppose that’s true…”

“What brings you here to Ecruteak anyway?”

I puff up my chest, pleased for an opportunity to speak about my life’s most passionate pursuit.

“I came in search of Suicune.”

“Suicune?” She tilts her head. “Ah, you must wish to visit the Bell Tower then.”

“That is next on my list to do, yes. Along with the ruins of the Burned Tower.”

“Allow me to give you a tour then. Not everyone is qualified to enter the sanctuary.”

She tents her fingertips to the floor as she rises with careful poise from her knelt position, and I eagerly follow suit. Zuki leads the way, her Eevee trotting dutifully by her side (who up to now had been quietly curled in its trainer’s lap). The three of us head north, past the Gym, to where the sad remnants of the original Brass Tower stand overlooking the city. We pause, taking in the picture of profound profanity against such sacred ground – an ancient, awesome architecture stripped to but its bare bones, dust and ash scattered everywhere. Zuki bends her head as if in prayer, paying polite respects, and I offer reverence as well.

When I lift my eyes though, I sense a cold chill creeping down my spine as Eevee’s ears prick, pointing towards one of the burnt beams – where a gang of Murkrow is perched, squinting suspiciously down at the strangers. I glower back at them, making my disapproval of their presence here known.

“Begone, pests!”

I try to shoo them off, but their roost is out of my range, and they merely blink back coolly; beady eyes against black plumage, narrowing to scarlet slits. Their stare is so unnerving that I decide to move on, shuddering as I urge my guide along. She acquiesces, but every time I glance back their perpetual gaze continues to track our movement, beaks curled as if in smirk – smug and snug in their lofty positions.

With Zuki’s escort, the Sages guarding the Barrier Station willingly grant us entrance. As soon as we pass through the gate, the world seems to silence – utterly still save for the falling of leaves. Although the season should be warm, this area is known for magically sporting colors of autumn all year-round. It’s as if we’ve stepped into another plane of existence entirely. The air carries a mystical quality, crisp and cool as we crunch over a resplendent carpet of red and gold.

As soon as we near the towering terminus though, Eevee halts on its haunches, ears swiveling in abrupt alert again.

“Caw!”

A dark blob darts out from the branches, followed by several others. They screech and swamp around us, coalescing mostly around my companion – specifically her hair.

“Kyaa!”

Zuki ducks as they begin to viciously peck and pluck at the strands, and I endeavor to beat them off, utilizing my cape to gallantly shield the both of us. Eevee barks and bats at them as well, but they hover easily out of its tiny paws’ reach.

“Cretins! How dare you attack us like this?”

Before I can summon one of my own partners to help protect us though, one of the aggressors breaks away, wearing a look of triumph as it takes off, some small object glinting in its talons. The rest hastily retreat as well, leaving a flurry of feathers in their wake as they pursue their leader into the woods.

I bend down to assist Zuki up, worriedly checking to see if she’s okay.

“Are you hurt?”

Slowly, she removes her robe from her face, which thankfully appears unharmed, flustered features free of scratches at least.

“I’m… all right.” She strokes the spot where her hairdo had come undone, realization dawning at once. “Ah, my pin… They took it from me!”

Rage boils as I clench my fists.

“Thieves! They won’t get away with this!”

With a sharp whisk of cloak, I whirl around and take off after the bandits, before they can flee too far into the forest.

“Ah, wait!” Zuki casts anxiously towards the sky, which is starting to turn the same shade as the surrounding foliage. “The woods are dangerous at night…”

I pay her warning no heed however, confident in my capabilities. …It isn’t long however before I am forced to face an unfortunate conclusion:

I am hopelessly lost.

Exhaling in defeat, I slump down upon a nearby stump, scanning the endless grove of trees as shadows of dusk creep further along, gaining ground steadily. I take stock of the situation, sullenly examining the cloth of my sullied mantle, a corner of which had gotten caught on a twig and torn – all in a stubborn effort to prove myself. …Now look where it had gotten me.

Just then, at the margin of my periphery, I catch another subtle flicker of white. Snapping up to see a small shape scurry back behind the brush, I call out in hopes of being heard.

“Hello? Is someone there?”

The shrubs rustle gently again, and out pokes the cautious head of what appears to be a young child. A little girl, judging by her dark, shoulder-length locks, and the fact she is garbed in a loose, trailing gown like Zuki’s, but completely plain and without any patterns. …Oddly, her countenance is concealed by some kind of creature-like mask, vulpine ears and snout resembling a Ninetales.

I gingerly take a step towards her.

“Greetings. Are you from the village? Do you think you could be so kind as to show me the way back?”

The fox-girl mutely shakes her head, and darts off again. Desperately, I extend towards her.

“Hey, wait!”

However, rather than wrapping around her wrist, my hand only travels straight through her skin to the other side, as if plunging into a bucket of ice-cold water. Alarmed, I withdraw back in shock as the target scampers off, unfazed.

“Wh- what in Ho-Oh’s name was that?!”

“She’s a ghost.”

A dull voice speaks out, and I raise my dazed vision from my trembling palm to see another adolescent before me, holding up a lantern as a Gastly floats by his side, sniggering visibly. The girl dashes up to him and throws herself around his waist, clinging to his leg as she buries her mask’s muzzle in it. …Hey, how come she can touch him?

“Seriously?”

“Yup.”

He responds simply, patting the petrified clamper’s head with a sanguine smile.

“If she’s a ghost, how come she’s acting scared of me

I sulk, somewhat slighted by such snubbing behavior as she snuggles closer, hiding behind her bigger guardian as soon as I try to draw close.

“Maybe it’s because of the way you’re dressed.” He lifts his light a little to peer at my own appearance. “You’re the kid from Kanto who ran off into the woods by himself, right? The one who talks and dresses funny?”

Bristling, I retort back indignantly:

“Who are you calling a kid? You don’t look any older than I am.” If anything, upon comparing heights face to face, he was definitely shorter than I by at least a few inches. And how dare he ridicule my more dignified dialogue (although by this point perhaps some of the coarseness of my natural native tongue was slipping in my irritation), let alone my wardrobe. “Besides, I daresay you’ve no right to criticize my clothes. What’s with that dumb-looking headband?”

“This?” The boy tugs at the edge of his bandana, behind which tufts of dirty blond hair flop haphazardly. “It’s to cover a scar I got when a bunch of kids at school threw rocks at me.”

He casually throws out the statement without a second thought, and I blink at his boldfaced confession.

“Why did they do that?”

“Oh, people always made fun of me for being able to talk to ghosts and stuff. My family’s always been known for having a strong connection to the spiritual world, but it’s the first time someone with potential as powerful as mine has been born in generations. Took a while for folks to get used to it.” He shrugs, apparently not too concerned by his morbidly depressing past. “What about you? What’s with the gloves? Afraid of germs or something?” He grins goadingly. “And who the heck wears a cape in this day and age?”

I frown, twiddling fingers behind my back.

“They were my grandfather’s. He died not too long ago.”

I find myself sniffing, although perhaps not solely from superiority anymore.

“…I see. I’m sorry for your loss.”

At this point, I note the “ghost” girl peeking out from behind the boy at me, and as a distraction I inquire:

“Why is she wearing a mask?”

“Same reason as me. To hide her scars.”

“Scars?”

“From the burns. She died in the fire 140 years ago.”

I stun at this revelation. She’s been “deceased” for so long…?

“She and her friends were playing nearby when the Tower caught fire. It spread to the surrounding woods, engulfing them in the inferno as well.”

It is then that I gain a sense of several other pairs of animal eyes watching us, lurking in the growing gloom. The boy beams as he cups a hand to his mouth:

“It’s all right. You guys can come out.”

One by one, the camouflaged specters emerge from the bushes, crowding around the centerpiece as they laugh and exclaim joyfully:

“Morty…”

“It’s Morty…”

“Did you come to play with us, Morty?”

“Morty” shakes his head, smiling in a mollifying manner.

“Not today, sorry. I’ve got to help my friend here get back home.”

“Oh…”

“Okay…”

“See you tomorrow, Morty…”

A chorus of disappointment echoes, but they nod in understanding, waving merrily as they melt gradually away back into the trees. Only the original apparition remains, seeming reluctant to let go. …Which reminds me, I had my own purpose for staying here.

“Wait, hold on. I came here to track down a Murkrow who stole one of the Kimono Girls’ hairpins. Have you seen it?”

“You mean like that hairpin?”

Morty points over my shoulder at the stump I had been sitting on, where said swindler had surreptitiously alighted, barrette’s blooms glistening in its bill.

“Yes, there it is! Give it back, you fiend-!”

An arm stretches out to stop me though.

“Wait.”

The crow cocks its head with a “Caw?” as it hops forward and flits over to phantom, who outstretches her palm as the giver delicately deposits the ornament into it.

“Wah, so pretty~ Is this for me?”

The bird nods with a confirming chirp, cooing as it nuzzles affectionately against her neck, before taking flight again. The receiver turns her attention to the elder male beside her, as if requesting whether she could really keep it. Morty smiles as he hands the lamp over to me and stoops down.

“Here, let me help you put that on.”

He slides the clip onto the side of her bangs that’s exposed, and she giggles and twirls around, as I can’t help but admire how nice it does look on her, sparkling in the setting sun.

“Thank you, Morty~”

“It looks great on you. Now why don’t you go show all your friends?”

She nods enthusiastically, and even though neither of us can see it, I’m fairly sure she’s smiling behind the mask.

“Goodbye, Morty… Goodbye…”

She waves cheerfully, and Morty returns the gesture as she races off in excitement, fading into the forest after the others.

“…I’ve never seen a Murkrow do something like that before.”

“Generally they’re seen as symbols of bad luck, but they can be very generous to Trainers they’re close to. It all depends on perspective.” Morty braces against the baggy knees of his blue sweatpants as he levers up. “If there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that not all Pokémon of the same species are necessarily bad or good. Same goes for people too.”

I look down at my toes. …Perhaps he’s right. There can be beauty in ugliness after all.

“Anyway, don’t worry about Zuki. I’ll explain the situation when we get back.”

“Fine, I suppose. …I take it you know the way?”

“Nope. Not at all.”

“What? How the heck are we supposed to get back then?!”

I shout in panic, once again aware of how quickly the evening darkness is encroaching, tightening grip on the sole source of illumination. Morty merely smiles back calmly.

“We follow the bells, of course.”

“Bells?”

Harkening on his cue, I can indeed make out the tolling sound of temple bells in the distance, resonating loud and long, a clear indicator of our destination’s direction.

“They ring the bells every evening, to tell children it’s time to start heading home. We’d better hurry though. These woods are notorious for getting lost in, and they say that if you stay out here after dark your soul will become trapped, wandering as a restless spirit for eternity.”

“R- really?”

I tensely adjust my collar. While I was never one to believe in superstition or some of Grandfather’s more “spooky” stories, after what I had just witnessed I wasn’t keen on leaving things up to chance.

“If you’re scared, you can hold my hand.”

He offers out his palm, and I almost consider it briefly for a beat, before checking myself. Please, I wasn’t some child. (Besides, who knows where it’s been?)

“Fat chance.”

I mutter, stalking off towards the signal on my own, as Morty chuckles and tags along at a leisurely pace, maintaining just enough proximity to remain within the radiant circle’s radius. This guy’s laidback attitude is starting to really piss me off.

“Ah, there’s that Kanto dialect again. You know you sound a lot better when you talk like a normal person.”

“Shut up.”

…

By the time we arrive back, another pale silver sphere has risen to the sky, along with the first few soft glimmers of stars, twinkling through the final vestiges of twilight. Zuki is waiting apprehensively by the Bell Tower entry, next to an older man I’ve not seen before.

“Mortimer! What did I tell you about wandering off into the woods on your own?”

The latter crosses his arms, voice booming in reproach. Morty bows deferentially before the man.

“My apologies, father. I sought to further my training by taking on this task by myself.”

His reprimander huffs, before relenting.

“Very well. I shall see you back at the Gym. Do not be late. Your mother’s making rainbow maki tonight.”

He heads back towards the access, as I regard the boy beside me, dumbfounded.

“Don’t tell me… Your dad’s the Gym Leader? And…” I strive to stifle a snort. “Your name’s Mortimer

“What did you think ‘Morty’ was short for?” He mumbles, evidently embarrassed despite his earlier show of nonchalance. (And to think, he had given me grief for my mannerisms. Besides, wasn’t he also using formal speech just now?) “Anyway, who names their kid Eusine

I’m about to snap back at first, but upon remembering our other current company, I decide the better part of valor would be to just bite my tongue now.

“Touché.”

As assured, Morty thus describes to Zuki what happened to her hairpiece, and she nods in sympathy.

“It’s all right. It was cheap, and I was about to change it soon anyway. I’m glad someone else can make use of it.”

She smiles, and bids farewell for the night, seeing as it’s too late to enter the sanctified structure now, promising to provide a proper tour in the morning instead. I start to depart as well towards the Pokémon Center, when Morty makes me cease by grabbing my hand.

“Where are you going?”

“Um, I was going to spend the night at the Center…”

“You don’t have to do that. Why don’t you just come stay with us instead?”

“Eh?” I swallow and shake my head. “I couldn’t impose like that…”

“It’s fine. Come, have dinner with us. You’re interested in the Legendary Beasts, right? My family has studied them extensively. We have a library rich in vast knowledge, tons of archived texts passed down through generations.”

I perk at the prospect.

“Do they contain any information on Suicune?”

“Plenty.” He winks. “Although personally I’ve always wanted to see Ho-Oh someday. That’s why I’m training so hard, to reach the level where it will deem me worthy. They say the ‘rainbow-colored Pokémon’ will only come down to appear before a truly powerful trainer…”

He murmurs, a wistful mist overtaking his normally detached expression as he cranes his neck up at the top of the tower.

“Seems we’ve got something in common then.”

He smiles, and rotates his concentration back.

“Plus, my mother could help fix that for you.”

He denotes towards the apparent hole in my apparel. That seals it.

“Hm… Thank you then.” I bow with an embellishment of said frayed attire. “I’d be much obliged.”

“Hey, I told you to knock it off with the formal stuff, didn’t I?” He rolls his eyes. “We’re friends, aren’t we?”

There this carefree guy goes again, already determining that we’re more than “acquaintances” who just met less than an hour ago… But somehow I find myself not minding the presumption.

He’s the very first “friend” I’ve ever had, after all.

Lady Kuno has drawn Shuckle's writing request in the first round of the 6th Annual Secret Santa Tournament. How is she going to fare in a matchup like this?

Guidelines for the author:

1. The story does not need to be only the battle. It simply needs to contain a battle.
2. It does not need to be a 6v6 match but it should not be a 1v1 either.
3. The teams are listed below.
4. The battle must culminate in a Shuckle vs. Audino grudge match.

Neither I nor tyoyo is particularly active but you should be able to get some idea of our respective personalities by reading through our posts. As a general rule, Shuckle = always tries to consider the correct play given available information and enjoys flashy moves and complex strategies, Tyoyo = !!! believe in yourself! dodge it! yeah!

Shuckle's Team:

Exeggutor-Alola
Espeon
Gardevoir
Slowking
Alakazam (Mega)
Shuckle

Tyoyo's Team:

Mr. Mime
Altaria
Togetic
Buizel
Beartic
Audino (Mega)

[11:09 PM] Toyo: why do you phrase things like that tom
[11:09 PM] Shuckle: Because
[11:09 PM] Shuckle: I like words
[11:09 PM] Toyo: ok good
[11:09 PM] Toyo: use less
[11:09 PM] Shuckle: "As a general rule, Shuckle = play smart, Tyoyo = play dumb"
[11:09 PM] Toyo: i'll take it"
Spoiler: show
Welcome to the 45th annual UPN Kumite Tournament. A brutal competition featuring only the best of the best. After multiple brutal matches we are now finally at the semi-finals. It is a 2v2 and both teams have already selected their first Pokemon in secret. It's quite possible that the first match up is entirely one sided. After a few moments, Shuckle and Tyoyo walk onto the arena. They meet in the middle, shake hands, and walk back to their respective part of the arena. They both grab the Pokeball they have selected and throw it out onto the field.

After a moment both Pokemon can be seen. On Shuckle's side you see an Alolan Exeggutor and on the other a Togetic. It would appear Shuckle clearly as at the disadvantage here but who knows what strategies are in mind. The Togetic takes to the air and floats around the Exeggutor, out of its range. It flaps its tiny wings and sends a Fairy Wind towards the dragon type, dealing quite a bit of damage! The Exeggutor is just.. standing there. What is it planning? The Togetic floats around, looking carefully at what its foe is trying to do. The Exeggutor glows a bit.. it appears to have used an Ingrain to help offset the type advantage! The Togetic quickly realizes what's going on as it sends an Air Slash its way! The grass type looks to be in pain.

Thankfully the Ingrain seems to be helping, but the Exeggutor seems to not be doing too well. This matchup is not very favorable for it. The Togetic flies around the Exeggutor, looking for another attempt to strike when all of a sudden all of the Exeggutor eyes start to glow. Togetic feels rather sleepy, as it falls to the ground and takes a nap with Hypnosis! The Exeggutor uses this time to use Sythesis and restore the lost health! Togetic starts to open its eyes when it gets assaulted by a Psychic next! Now startled awake, it gives a very angry Dazzling Gleam! The attack quickly drops its health rather low once more. The Exeggutor, struggling to hang out, sets up one more move, a Trick Room. The arena starts to glow strangely as Togetic is confident that it has the battle in the bag. It drops to the ground to start to Roost but find itself moving quite a bit slower. The quicker Exeggutor starts to act and it ends the battle once and for all with a Self Destruct! A massive explosion can be seen with both Pokemon fainted after the dust settles.

Both trainers look surprised by the outcome, but are confident in their next choice. Shuckle sends out a Shuckle and Tyoyo sends out an Audino! They stare each other down for a moment but the Shuckle feels... surprisingly spry. It goes to attack but the Audino quickly Mega Evolves into Mega Audino! Lots of sparkles and shiny effects can be seen. But when the effects end we see Shuckle quickly firing off a Rock Blast at the Audino! The Audino stands where it's at and blows over a Sweet Kiss! Oh la la~ The Shuckle looks awfully confused (as does everyone else watching). The Audino brings down justice while the Shuckle is confused with a Focus Punch! The powerful blow deals a decent bit of damage to the Shuckle, snapping it out of confusion!

Unfortunately for Shuckle, the arena turns back to normal speed. It finds itself slowing down quite a bit. The Audino blasts out a Thunderbolt as the Shuckle drops in health even more. Suddenly the Audino finds the arena to be quite sandy, as a Shuckle used a Sand Tomb and it finds itself sinking in sand. It struggles to break free as Shuckle draws close again and delivers a Stone Edge! The rock attack deals quite a bit of damage as Audino crawls out of the sandy pit. It stands upright and delivers a devastating Blizzard attack! More damage is dealt to the little bug as it finds itself hurting quite a bit. But both sides have taken quite a bit of damage.

Audino decides to use this time to close its eyes and Wish! It hopes to recover itself in order to finish off its foe when suddenly Shuckle starts to clap its tiny bug hands. It is giving Audino an Encore! The Audino can't stop wishing on multiple stars as Shuckle spits out a nasty Toxic on the Audino! While the Audino has recovered to full health, it's starting to look a bit tired. It finally find itself free from the Encore as the poison damage is hurting it quite a bit. The Shuckle then goes for a Venoshock, dealing super effective and boosted damage while Audino was poisoned! The Audino shakes off the Toxic with a Refresh, however its health is looking worse than its opponent. Shuckle goes for another Rock Blast during the opportunity Audino gave it. Shuckle wastes no time as it starts to roll around. Audino goes for a Drain Punch but it misses! The Shuckle apparently is using a Rollout!

It swerves around, to and fro, building up speed and dodging attacks. It starts to gain quite a bit of moment when it finally crashes into the Audino. The Mega Audino slumps over to the ground, KOed. Shuckle and Shuckle are the winners! Both trainers walk into the middle and shake hands, and walk out.

Shuckle went on to win the Kumite and was not seen after the tournament. Tyoyo took time off from the competitive circuit to improve his Pokemon and strategies. Years later the pass each other on a busy street in a familiar city. Their eyes meet for a moment, but they quickly move past each other. They are certain they saw one another but they will have to settle it again in battle. Thankfully the next Kumite starts later that day.

HeroicRein has reportedly decided to go with some "weirdness" in this writing request for Mew The Gato:

The night before Christmas is anything but cliché as Drampa Claus sluggishly moves along as quickly as his base 36 speed stat will allow him, though the night was still young so he had plenty of time to get a Trick Room set up around him so all would receive their gifts. The T-Room went up and joy was spread, gifts were dropped off at houses around the globe. Pokémon were wrapped in joy at Orre, gleeful in Kanto and bringing the light in Almia. All was good and all was swell, another year over and a new one was to begin… I mean, not before Drampa Claus could go home and drink some gin. He poured a glass, not too quick but not too fast, he made sure it was full before he stopped. With all his work over, his jaw had just dropped while the gin was ingested and from that day forward, Drampa Claus had yet to be bested as the bearer of gifts and even the singer of Christmas carol rifts.

Hanatori has this to say about her art request for phoopes: "I think the RNG ships your requests with my art for some reason. I hope I've made a work that stands up alongside Dr. Octillerygonapus and Momo no Soonansu."

If you're tired of all these Pokemon requests, do we have something for you! It's a Wild Card from kawaiiconcept to Snorby:

"It's a beautiful day outside. Bird's are singin', children are playin'. It's on days like this that flowers like you, SHOULD BE BURNING UN HELL."

Sans had finally found his target. The little flower that had been the source of his problems for lives upon lives. It wasn't the kid, he.understood that now. Thankfully, in this life, he had spared the kid instead of trying to kill them. The kid, Frisk, had freed them all from the underground.
Sans towered over the yellow flower. However, instead of cowering Flowey was staring straight back. "YOU IDIOT!" the flower screamed back, "YOU THINK YOU CAN DEFEAT ME? WELL THEN SKELETON LET'S FIGHT!"
Sans nodded slowly, his eye sockets closed, "Just so you know," his eyes opened and ine eye glowed a bright blue. "I don't appriciate being called an idiot."
The skeleton raised a hand and skull-like blasters appeared out of nowhere and charged with electric blue energy.
Flowey grinned menicingly and vines flew out of the ground to block the skeleton's attack.
The skull-blasters fired and the blue energy ripped through the vines.
Flowey, however, had dug himself out of the way and was now laughing at Sans. The skeleton clenched his fists, getting angry at his target. He rised his hand and the gravity effecting Flowey changed. The yellow flower was thrown out of the ground and into the air. Bones shot out down from the sky to impale Flowey. The little Flower was tricky, however, and fired seed-like bullets at Sans. Sans was to fast for Flowey and easily dodged the bullets. The little flower was starting to get angry. Flowey snarled and shot distorted inages toward the hoodie wearing skeleton.
Sans dodges the yellow flower's attacks with even more ease and suddenly Flowey was on a platform above the battlefield. The skeleton smiled,"Now we can start the real fun." he said slowly. His blue eye growing brighter by the second. Sand clenched his fist with a grin and once more bones popped up out of the ground and celing.
This time Flowey could do nothing to avoid the grinning skeleton's attack and was pierced through by the bone spikes. The little flower dropped to the ground and stopped moving. Before Sans could approach a glow errupted around the form. Flowey began to shift and change. A bright white light filled the area.
When it died down a small furry figure lay where Flowey had been. Sans' eye stopped glowing as a concirned look crossed his face. The skeleton knelt down as the furry creature raised it's head. It looked like a very small version of king asgore. Sans realized that this must be the long lost prince Asriel. Somehow he had gotten a soul, maybe one of the human souls had returned.
Asriel sniffed, "I-I'm s-sorry. I-I didn't mean to m-mess with the timelines. I-I don't want to be alone a-anymore. That's a-all."
Sans smiled, "That's ok kiddo. It seems you won't be alone anymore." The skeleton gestured to the goat prince's chest. It glowed orange briefly.
Asriel looked awed, "D-does this m-mean I-I can leave? I can go u-up to the surface!"
Sans nodded and the young prince threw himself into the skeleton's arms for a hug.
After a stunned silence Sans let the goat prince go and they headed out of the ruins, hand in hand.

In this post, we witness a Wild Card request from KamenAeons being fulfilled by kawaiiconcept:

She had been having a full fledged tea party with Mya and the rest of her team, an Eevee and a lilipup. All had seemed peaceful at they sipped their tea.
Out of nowhere a shadow had ripped across the fields. Anabelle had acted quickly and recalled her Eevee and Lilipup, but Mya refused to get in her Pokéball. Instead, the Mincinno cast protect on her trainer to shield Annabelle from the incoming shadow. As it neared Annabelle could swearcshe saw something glowing within it. A shadow of an unfamilier Pokémon was cintained within the glow. It's eyes snapped open and saw Annabelle. There was a sharp pain in her chest and she passed out.
When Anabelle awoke she was sheltered under a tree with fairy-types circling her. Their aura seemed to be the only thing keeping her alive. From then on Annabelle always carried a Fairy-type Pokémon with her.
Back in the current day Annabelle was enjoying the moment when movement in the trees caught her eye. The young trainer stood up suddenly and ran after it, Mya close behind.
They eventually reached a clearing in which many different kinds of Pokémon played. In the center stood the life-giving legendairy Pokémon, Xerneas.
Xerneas turned its atlered head towards Annabelle. A voice spoke in her head, niether male nor female but somewhere in the middle. In order for me to heal you, you must first prove yourself. Approach me.
As the young trainer approached the great deer-like Pokémon she began to get light headed and dizzy. Vissions flashed before her eyes, moments of her life that she regretted. Moments that made her happy. A single question arose, Why should her life be saved?
Annabelle thought back to everything in her life. Nothing came out of it, was she really that uniportant? She had a moment of panic, and then...
Peace, she accepted death. Even with all her regrets she knew she didn't matter to the world, it wouldn't miss her.
There was a sharp tug in her mind and her eyes opened. Annabelle was staring Xerneas straight in the face. Everyone is made for a reason. That's why you need to live. Go find your reason. the life giving Pokémon stated.
Annabelle nodded mutely and walked off. She was determined to find a reason for her life, even if it killed her.

All right, everyone, we're at the bottom of the pile, no presents lef... wait, there's one more. This one doesn't have a clear recipient - the tag's smudged. It's a writing request filled by Shadowshocker, and I reckon he wouldn't let the tag get all smudged, so this is clearly the work of MYSTERIOUS FORCES. (Actually, it's something extra for Snorby, a written companion to the art request upthread. --ed.)

He dove through each passage
That swarmed with myotis.
(I'd finished the art;
Got bored so I wrote this.)
His lungs consumed brimstone,
His heart, it beat earnest,
His skin sweated rainstorms
From underground furnace.
In chamber most deep
And pathway precarious,
He witnessed the creature
Of legend nefarious.
An aura of rage
Burned bright from within,
Melting the metal
That formed bits of skin.
An ocean of magma
It claimed as its throne,
The only approach
Being a network of stone.
With sweat down his brow,
Brain boiling in fear,
He nonetheless dared
To draw ever near.
His approach being noticed,
The creature before
Him issued its dom'nance
With horrible roar.
Yet Snorby declared,
"With this legendary

Hear us, O Heatran!
Thou shall taste our resolve!
Now, my partner, Skippy -
Time to MEGA EVOLVE!"

With that, we're officially out of completed requests to post! If I missed your finished request and it was already PMed, let me know. If something's come up and you're finishing your work late, you can post it here when it's done.

Thank you to everyone who contributed to this year's Secret Santa, and happy holidays to all of UPN!

But the question is: Since UPN game works on opposite logic, wouldn't Dragon be SE against Steel (like rubber and everything else)? *shot*

Aw at nothing for me so far (and no one taking my Wild Card requests either ;; ), but I shall wait patiently~

Great job, everyone! And big thanks to Hana for organizing this again. Merry Christmas, y'all~ <3

Technically it's for Snorby; it's a write-up to go along with the art he requested. Should've made that clear, I guess. :V
