God Particle confirmed?
This was announced a few days ago, but I just learned CERN seems to think the particle they observed last year is a Higgs Boson. Perhaps not "the" Higgs Boson, but "a" Higgs Boson, and one that will definitely lead us to confirmation or rejection of the Standard Theory.
What's the significance of this? Elucidation into the governance of the universe will help explain what formed the universe, where it's going, and give us new frontiers for technology. It's hope for the world, I think, that for those of us who dream of exploring the universe and getting off this forsaken planet, something like this is positive reassurance, even if most of us won't live to read the epilogue.

I know all about that, but I still like using it for the very reason brought up in that article - it's catchy, created interest and raised awareness/support for the research. It isn't hard to retroactively assign properties of the Higgs Boson to the "god" moniker, so the complaints really boil down to 1) atheists scientists getting mad over "religion" and 2) the media messing with their nomenclature, which is a divine right of researchers who discover something to stain it in their colour.
There's no way in heck that the term "God Particle" did more harm than good for support of Higgs Boson research. Scientists still know what it does and doesn't do. Misunderstandings can be clarified relatively easily. Completely blown out of proportion.
