(Man I never thought I'd be this eager to see a film in theaters, let alone a comic book movie. OTL Next year can't come fast enough.)

On another note, in terms of movies I recently saw, I actually caught up on The Hunger Games sequels last weekend. I've read the books and saw the first film when it came out but wasn't impressed (especially with Jennifer Lawrence's acting - I mean I know her character's supposed to be kinda wooden but still), so I didn't bother following the rest until I came up with this crazy Batman crossover idea don't look at me like that yes I know I'm trash. It's been a while so I can't really tell how good the adaptations are anymore (although I'm aware of some cuts they made, which were rather disappointing). Like for example:

Spoiler: show
It saddened me to realize the foreshadowing of Johanna stating she doesn't want to die by electrocution in the Games... A shame they failed to mention that's the specific method of torture the Capitol used on her afterward. >.> At least they did acknowledge she was tormented alongside Peeta (whom I had forgotten was basically driven to insanity until about a month ago).

*shakes head and sighs at more child abuse and despair*

Overall, the film series, like the books, was decent insofar as dystopian young adult stories go. I enjoyed them, if staying up all night to finish is any indication. XP

P.S. Dat "Hanging Tree" song is beautiful.

Quantum of Solace: the second in the Daniel Craig series of James Bond films, this is one I've been wanting to see for a long time. Big fan of Casino Royale. So is my dad. So I got him this and Skyfall for Christmas.

Spoiler lite thoughts:

Spoiler: show
People had told me that Quantum of Solace was a direct sequel to Casino Royale. And boy were they right. No, not even a sequel -- more of a direct continuation, really, the Two Towers to Casino Royale's Fellowship of the Ring. And given what goes down in it, I think it's a fair prediction that Skyfall will prove to be this series' Return of the King.

From fairly early on, I felt that QoS was not as good as Casino Royale. I think that opinion's correct, I say having now just finished the film. It was a decent to good action film. It was a decent to good James Bond film. But it was no Casino Royale. The plot was more rushed, less interesting, less exciting ... However, the one thing it did well -- really well, maybe? -- was to further develop the Daniel Craig-era James Bond mythos. By having the story be one enormous response to Casino Royale, the writers were able to develop Craig-Bond's character more, from his relationship with M to his motivations to his moral compass ... It was really, really lovely in that regard.

Excited for Skyfall, but not gonna lie: underwhelmed, disappointed by Quantum of Solace.

Spoiler thoughts:

Spoiler: show
I love how the film picks up right were we left off at the end of Casino Royale, minus like five minutes of transition from island getaway to mainland highway.

I love how there is now an established League of Supervillains in the James Bond universe thanks to the introduction of Quantum. The opera house scene was especially enjoyable.

Dominic Greene was an increeeeedibly underwhelming villain. Le Chiffre was much more interesting. Greene is quite forgettable as Bond villains go. He sponsors tyrannical dictators ... he blackmails them ... he profits off the world's poor by engineering artificial resource droughts (e.g. damming up a river so that he can monopolize the water supply and sell it to people at ludicrous prices) ... But he doesn't seem to be especially clever, strong, or freaky. No crying blood, no jaws of metal, no razor-sharp bowler ... he's just a pasty, sallow frog of a man. He's like the Peter Pettigrew of Quantum's archvillains.

I disliked the script between White's escape at the start of the film and the Bolivian girl's being dropped off unconscious at the line for the airplane. (Estimate: minutes 15 to 35.) Too many illogical things happened just because they had to happen to set the stage for the rest of the film. Why would Bond do any of what he did at the Haitian port? Why would he drop off a woman he just inexplicably risked everything to save? I'm not going to list everything off here. I just thought all of the writing there sucked.

Was a fun surprise to see Mathis again. Was very sad to lose him when and as we did.

Strawberry Fields was pretty hot. But she was also ridiculously easy. O_o Sad that she had to die. Also sad that she died when and as she did. Was hoping that if she had to die she'd only die near the film's climax where it's revealed that she's another of Quantum's double agents. That stated, I appreciate that they were trying to replicate the famous Goldfinger death scene (with the gold paint-covered girl) only this time it was with black oil.

Mixed feelings about the final scene of the movie with Vespa's revealed-to-still-be-alive ex. On the one hand, it was too non sequitur and I also don't like that this guy is now canonically a huge douchebag. On the other hand, I liked that it gave James closure and I loved the entirety of the outdoor portion of the scene shared with M.

Villain's final base was super lame. Also I don't think hydrogen fuel cells work that way.

Airplane scene was both unnecessary and stupid.

Appreciated Bond having the relationship he ended up having with the Bolivian agent. He clearly cared for her but it was tinged with hues of friendship and/or guardianship that we didn't see with Vespa. The kiss they share is almost platonic, and they never have sex. They might later, but for now, no. That was nice.

Liked the return of the black CIA agent from Casino Royale. Disliked the white CIA guy, who is clearly a scumbag. Poor black guy, being driven to drink.

Not a big fan of the cinematography in this one. While it might be similar to Casino Royale's, I dunno ... this one's just felt so much more frenetic with its wobbly/imbalanced camera, frequent cuts to new shots, and more.

The movie feels like a huge intermission or bridge between Casino Royale and Skyfall, I say having never even seen Skyfall. Everything that happens here seems to either connect back to things introduced in CR or else to connect forward to things to be revealed in full in Skyfall.

Man did the martini scene feel forced. ^^;

One of the film's best points is all of the Bond-M relationship development. How she comes to trust him, how he helps to preserve her moral integrity / to keep her from falling into temptation the way the Americans did, etc. Casino Royale obviously did this too, but Quantum of Solace does an especially good job of it. Just about every one of the scenes they share onscreen together are amongst my favorites.

In The Heart Of The Sea is pretty good. Dark, dank, well acted. The premise is really lame but otherwise good film.

Watched Star Wars. The Force Awakens wasn't a trainwreck, and considering the reception of certain Star Wars films, I'm somewhat relieved that this one wasn't an utter mess.

Watched a number of films over the holidays, the ones I had not seen before:

Bridesmaids is pretty funny. The pacing is a bit off in parts and it's moderately difficult to engage with it because the main character is such a horrible person but there's a lot of very human stuff. Great cast, some great lines in it. I like that you keep seeing her life go down and down the crapper and I also like that her efforts to fix it aren't immediately successful. I also really liked the mother.

Mean Girls (yes I finally watched Mean Girls) is great. Again, they're all awful people, but it's pretty true to life I think. Many women I know have said this is exactly how it works and I can see why. Great lines, great showing up of people being bitches, and about half a dozen quotes that I use regularly that I didn't realise were from this film. It's a good one no doubt.

The cafeteria scenes in Mean Girls were filmed at my high school.

Also, I saw The Revenant the other night. It would've been a very different movie if my friends and I weren't cracking jokes throughout the movie, half of which were spongebob or star wars related.

EDIT 1/17/16: Whoop saw The Big Lebowski twice today.

Deadpool is quite good. Doesn't pass the Bechdel test or have anyone of meaningful non-whiteness but if you're not worried about such things and looking to go see a film like Deadpool you'll probably enjoy it.

Don't bother waiting for the after credits, but do watch the main credits.

Fun fact: The Deadpool game has a conversation that specifically says it's only about passing the Bechdel test.

Deadpool. Amazing. Minor issues with details here and there, but the film was great. Negasonic Teenage Warhead has telepathic/precognitive powers, not explosive telekinesis. Angeldust definitely doesn't have Colossus ball crushing super strength.

But the bigger issue is how I feel about Deadpool's impact on future films though.

There's already rumors of YET ANOTHER Fantastic Four remake which is rated R. Sorry but this is the dumbest fuck shit idea ever. I can understand Wolverine being made rated R, but FF makes no sense.

The reason Deadpool is so well received wasn't because of the R rating, but because the movie was made by fans of the comic, not an executive board trying to create a film with mass appeal based on computer data.

I imagine Ryan Reynolds is at home everyday now, wearing the Deadpool suit, standing in front of a mirror, touching himself on top his Uncle Scrooge pile of money.

I don't want to watch Zootopia because like Frozen and (sadly) Wreck-It Ralph, it looks horribly generic.

I know by plot it isn't, but the visual style is about as bland as 3D movies get. That's one of the saddest take-homes of Disney abandoning hand-drawn animation.

So Deadpool was pretty good. Was a little more serious than i was expecting but that was good for a movie. The plot and humor of the comic book wouldn't translate well into a two hour movie without this kind of serious plot I think.

Also I watched the Rooster Teeth movie Lazer Team and it was fairly good for a their first movie. Plot was a little generic and the special effects were a little obviously low budget but ive definitely seen worse come out of higher budget movies. The humor was stellar though as always from rooster teeth. Definitely would recommend it. You can watch it for free with a free trial for Youtube Red

I saw this yesterday and people loved this bit!

Thoughts on Zootopia (some spoilers?):

Spoiler: show
The film was so good. There was a lot more gravitas to the plot than I was expecting but I think the slightly longer runtime than an ordinary Disney film helped things in this area because it didn't feel rushed at all at any point and thus the plot could unravel slowly.

There were so many one liners and little jokes to take in throughout the whole film, I think I'll need to watch it again to really pick up on some of them properly. Clawhauster was probably one of the best characters. I wish he had more screen time.

I thought the nudist colony was un-funny and the only comical misfire of the film. But from speaking with other people I feel like I'm alone in that one.

I quite enjoyed the Villain reveal, it wasn't as out of nowhere/mindblowing as I think the film makers would have hoped but it definitely made the final act much more intense and served the film very well.

Overall very good. It didn't top Inside Out for me as the best animation film in recent memoiry, but it was very good. I can see why it's got a ridiculous Rotten Tomato's score (98%?).

BvS is fine. If you read it as a treatise on how US foreign policy is post 9/11 it's good, otherwise it's a bit dull.
