London Olympics 2012
Why don't we have one of these yet?
So the Olympics just started. I haven't seen the OCs yet but I am downloading the video as I type this. Any events you're excited for? Opinions on the ceremonies? Discuss and whatnot. |

Summer Olympics are my favorite. I actually have television in my apartment to watch them on this year. And yet ... I am completely devoid of interest in them this go-around. D: Wish I wasn't, but I am. Hopefully I'll get motivated to be pumped for:

Used to watch some of the Olympics as a kid, but I always preferred the winter olympics to the summer ones.
I don't even really know what the summer events are, besides Talon's list. |

When this happened in 2008, I was confined in a hospital, celebrating my birthday during the Opening Ceremony. I couldn't really enjoy it too well .-.

The London Olympics brought us this, erm, quality Google nameplate image:
Only the dead can know peace from this evil. I have a general apathy for watching sports in general, not helped by the hilariously retarded snafus involved in running an event whose host city is mostly determined by whose palms you grease and how much municipal debt you want to rack up.

It's the yearly visit!

I'm basically going to watch as possible on the BBC website, probably whilst doing other things. The only sports I'm super interested n are Water Polo, Road Cycling and the super main events (like the 100 meter sprints and similar).

Dammit, Octopush should be an Olympic event but it lost out to Synchonised Swimming. That well known sporting event.
Ceremony was fun. Particularly liked Rowan Atkinson cropping up. |

One of the few things that really bug me about Australia: They're only really good at swimming. As a result, the TV coverage will interrupt any other event, no matter how interesting, to bring you coverage of every swimming event. Swimming is, to me, the least interesting sport to watch in the olympics (with the possible exception of Football/Soccer and road cycling), so it really annoys me when they cut away from gymnastics/basketball/tennis/judo etc. to show non-diving pool sports.

I watched most of the OCs last night, but fell asleep around Kazahkstan on the parade of countries. Pretty cool ceremony, but I did like China's better. All that synchronized
Anyway, I'll be watching as much of the Olympics as possible. I'm interested in pretty much every track and field event, cycling, table tennis, soccer, basketball, and all the gymnastics. But what I'm most excited for are swimming and water polo, since I actually know a few people that made it on those teams. Hoping for the U.S. to win the medal count again this year. I think they said on TV that this would be the fifth time in a row if that happened, but I forget.

Fun fact! Britain is fielding the most athletes this time, just slightly ahead of the US (it's like, 540 against 530). China fielded the most the the Beijing games, the US did at the Athens games.
>US medal count Last time the US got the most medals overall (110 compared to second place Chinas 100) and the second most gold medals (36 compared to Chinas 51). Also, the Olympic commitee and pretty much everyone else ranks nations by gold medal count rather than total.

You can basically say that about any regional sport. So your statement is invalid.

I don't see how his statement is invalid. It's just not very meaningful.

Ah, but was it more or less meaningful than a needlessly and pedanticly correcting Jeri when we all know exactly what he means?
EDIT the first: More on topic, I'm trying to watch the womens foil fencing on the BBC website but my conncection isn't great so it keeps cutting out. Vezzali is doing well as per usual, though.

It's like saying if American football (fine... handegg) was at the Olympics, we'd kick all of your butts. It's absolutely true, and no one would dispute it, but that doesn't make it any more meaningful.
Also, just watched the end of the cycling race. Wasn't expecting any Americans to win medals, but what was more unlikely was that Vinkourov won the race! 38 years old is ancient for cycling, and to put it in perspective a bit, he actually raced at the Atlanta Olympics in 1996. Good for him, since he's going to be one of Kazahkstan's only medals.

Problem is, we've been perfecting the forward pass for over 100 years. You guys have yet to start with that. Not to mention the fact that "handegg" has been ingrained in the American culture. We have a much better talent pool than anyone else. It would take years before any other country could compete with an American "handegg" team.

That's it. The mere existence of the forward pass in American Football would render most of a Rugby team useless on defense, not to mention the weight/strength differential that would exist on both the offensive and defensive lines. Rugby is a game played by a team of all-rounders who can't afford to be bad at any one thing, while American Football is a game for highly specialized talents. I'd say a Rugby team with decent knowledge of the rules of the game would be able to play a high school team tight, but once you get to the high University level of football you'd be looking at Georgia Tech/Cumberland-esque scores.

The Archery was damn close. Very exciting stuff.
And it's a shame about the cycling, but it wasn't our day, I guess. I just feel bad for Cavendish. :/ |
