I lost my grandma for about four hours this morning. But apparently what had happened was that after the storm, she decided to have brunch with her friends and not tell anyone or answer her phone.

A woman being irresponsible? How novel.
That aside, I'm glad she's ok! |

Yeah. Though my grandparents had the fantastic idea of keeping their shoe store open on Monday, and almost got hurt crossing the street from the store back to their house. They're both in their 70's and they work way too much for their own good. Hopefully this will convince them to keep the store closed on bad weather days.

I just spent all day throwing out garbage bags full of PERFECTLY FINE food just because the freezer went TWO DEGREES above max temp. Needless to say I kept some and my freezer at home is fully stocked. The entire time I couldn't help but think "Meanwhile in Malaysia..."

Next to no damage for my block, but other parts of my neighborhood had it worse.
Having no school the entire week sure is nice, though.

I finally found power and internet at a library about a mile from my house. Other then that, no power, cold nights, and worried about how the SAT's going to held. It was to be tomorrow, but postponed. Til when, I have no idea.

This story about the loss of contemporary art galleries' collections makes me wonder how safe the historic art pieces and documents in New York City (various museums) and Washington, D.C. (the Smithsonian, the Library of Congress) really are. If Sandy had hit D.C., would the LoC have been okay? How floodproof is it, exactly? What happens if there's a freak earthquake and a huge water main breaks and rivers of water come gushing into the basement? Is there a contingency for that one-in-a-million chance disaster? I kinda doubt it. Which makes you wonder: does the fate of history's art pieces and documents really hinge on so many one-in-a-million chances not happening?
I guess it should be obvious when you approach the problem the other way: when you consider that so much art and documents have been lost over the centuries to war, natural disasters, and time, I suppose it's inevitable that of all the stuff we currently have in museums today, only 1-5% of it is going to be around in another thousand years. Food for thought.
