2011 - Gaming GETs, Goals & Grinding

New year demands a new thread!

When ya get a new game say so! When ya beat a game say so! If ya got goals say so! ^_^

For announced games coming out this year Okamiden, Dragon Quest VI, Yakuza 4, and Twisted Metal PS3 are on my radar. Might yet pick up GT5 if I catch a good sale on it an frankly what games don't fall in price fast this generation? The thought of downloading half a dozen updates is less than appealing though. For unannounced but likely ta be released games I want Phantasy Star Portable 2 Infinity and Yakuza PSP. I've heard there is another DS Starfy game an with Nintendo promising to bring over DS games they first passed on I'm hoping that is one of them.

For goals I'ma continue poking away at my backlog. Shining Force Neo, Beach Spikers, and Harvest Moon DS are at the top of the list of old games I started but never finished and are ones I wanna get through. The three games I got for christmas are ones I'll want ta do with Batman going well so far. Should prolly also give those three Burger King Xbox games a try to. I still wanna replay the .hack series to. Also Drill Dozer & FF7 as I do every year but sometimes forget ta mention.

I gots alot on my plate again. I finished up a buncha shorter games at the end of last year so I dun think I can keep up the same pace. What I do gotta keep up is my drive! Can't afford much slacking off!

I have a 40-hour long interactive movie in the form of FFXIII to get through, so that may occupy a good amount of my free time for a while.

Other than that, I'd like to finish a few Wii games and actually get stuff for my PS3.

I'm currently almost done with Golden Sun 2. I'm aiming for 100% completion, so I'm left with three bosses: the Star Magician, Dullahan, and the Doom Dragon. Strategies on how to defeat these evil bastards jerks are much appreciated.

In the absence of a working XBox, I'll resume my watching somebody else play Shenmue II next week. So it counts if Jeri's FFXIII counts.

I've been playing HGSS, sort of. I want to raise some new guys but it might be prudent to hold off until BW. Although there's no point in holding off unless I renege on my boycott. Sigh. Wouldn't be so hard if I had others with me choosing to stay behind in 4th Generation. Anyway, I did some Battle Tower solo (HG), some Casino slots (Pearl) and Voltorb Flip (HG), and even a little Battle Dome and Battle Factory (Emerald)!

Will need to save up for Portal 2 (April) and a PS3 + The Last Guardian.

Talon I'm quite certain the majority of Gen V haterz have since been compromised

Just completed Fable 3, will probably move onto Black Ops when I can be bothered.
Also, my brother got Kinect: it's basically a Wii, don't waste your money folks.

ME3 comes out this year I think? Hells yes I will be getting that. Also intending to pick up Alan Wake and Metro:2033 at some point.

Coming this year (and things I am looking at):

Dead Space 2, sequel to the underrated space horror game Dead Space. Looks good. Comes out this month or at least this quarter.

Dragon Age 2, sequel to Dragon Age: Origins. I don't know if I like this one yet. The way everyone describes it, it seems less like a D&D-ish game and more like Mass Effect in the fantasy world Thedas. Not that Mass Effect isn't good, but the game styles don't fit. I like my Baldur's Gate as Baldur's Gate. I don't want to see it become Street Fighter.

Mass Effect 3 winter 2011. Feels rushed since Mass Effect 2 came out last January. We can hope for the best.

Gears of War 3 in April. Looks decent.

Marvel vs. Capcom 3. Looks awesome. Needs more characters :p

Diablo 3?Batman Arkham City? Elder Scroll 5?

I tend not to worry much about what's coming out since unless I'm really, really jazzed for it, since Brawl taught us all that release dates are a cruel, capricious mistress.

That said, looking at Wikipedia's list of games I might get that are coming out in 2011:

-Tactics Ogre PSP
-Pokemon Black (English release)
-Duke Nukem Forever (WHERE'S MY DEMO GEARBOX YOU SAID THERE WOULD BE A DEMO)
-Mass Effect 3 (if it actually comes out, I expect this one will get pushed to 2012)
-Infamous 2
-Torchlight 2
-Disgaea 4 (why do I do this to myself)

Barring word of mouth or hype that catches my attention for other game(s) of course. And it'll also get a lot bigger if the launch/2011 lineup for the 3DS is something other than total ass.

Primarily though, I want to carve into the backlog I managed to accumulate this year, especially after holiday sales.

I'll buy Portal 2 when it goes down to Ł10. That'll probably be the only game I buy next year.

I'll buy Zelda skyward sword, and paper mario 3ds when it hits the stores.

Currently replaying zelda spirit tracks and phantom hourglass.

Have been replaying Links awakening thanks to the "worst zelda thread".

This year I'm going to finally finish Lunar: Silver Star Story. My playstation died shortly after I purchased the game, but I got a copy of the game for the PSP for Christmas, so that's my goal.

I will always and forever associate Lunar with Shii. To be honest, I prefer the story told by Shii and Shii's performance to those of the original.

I tried to play the game several years ago on a PSOne emulator on my old laptop but I didn't find it to be fun. The game requires a lot of grinding since little baddies award next to nothing in Experience Points and yet scale quite quickly in their speed, power, and toughness as you progress. I remember making it as far as the area just after the monster you defeat in the sewer and then dropping the game. I hope that you'll like it, though. I have heard that the story is very good, but I have also heard that what felt new and powerful to kids our age who played it back when the game was brand-new (i.e. over a decade ago) felt cliché to those who didn't get around to playing the game until our age now. Certainly I hope that for your sake that isn't true, but it was enough, coupled with the grind-requiring gameplay, to get me to drop it.

I guess I'll participate too.

I'm sorta ignorant on new releases, but I have a few I have my eyes on.
Pokemon White- I'm afraid this will be loaded with nothing but lame gimmicks, but I might as well try it. Also, one of the starters evolves into a banana.
Marvel vs. Capcom 3- Looks cool as hell.
Disgaea 4- Mindless grinding is go!

For goals, I mostly want to replay a bunch of stuff. I'd like to replay FF Tactics (original) FF9, some Zelda titles, Star Ocean 3, Pokemon Diamond and some other stuff I'll likely think of on a whim.

Oh, I did recently finish the DS Golden Sun. Like the last two, it was pretty fun and I looked forward to the boss battles. The dialogue kinda droned on and on, and kinda annoyed me, but other than that, I liked it. Also, Svetta is awesome. Long ears with a twitching effect when she's standing still is an instant win!

At the suggestion of some friends and as a pretense to go to Gamestop for Raikou, I picked up a copy of Assassin's Creed (One) for ten bucks.

This is pretty much my first 4 SRS game ever (and my first M one too, I think) so I was going into it totally blind, not really expecting anything.

Stealthy games are not really my forte, or even really action games for that matter. I'm used to going into a game and being able to do whatever the fuck I want.

Apparently, riding any faster than a gallop on a horse is heresy, because I immediately hear shouts of "STOP INFIDEL" when I do.

So needless to say there's been a bit of a learning curve, especially when I'm trying not to kill every soldier I pass. After my first legit assassination, I was trying to get away and was like "AUGH STOP GO AWAY I JUST WANT TO GET OUT OF HERE. JEEZ REALLY I DONT WANT TO KILL YOU GO AWAY". It was all very frustrating and stressful.

But I am intrigued and it's a bit more interesting then RANDOM ENCOUNTERS in FFXIII

Looking forward to a lot this year.

-Portal 2
-Pokemon White
-Paper Mario 3DS
-Skyward Sword
-Plants Vs. Zombies DS
-Also I'm really hoping Pikmin 3 comes out this year, but seeing as the release date hasn't been mentioned yet it'll probably be 2012.

Right now I'm replaying Wind Waker, which is probably my favorite game ever next to TTYD.

First beaten of the year!

Batman Arkham Asylum
- 15~18 hours?
The game was much longer then I expected it to be! I'm sure it could be done quicker but I got really obsessed collecting stuff and dying around 20 times (normal mode). Combat got overcrowded a couple of times and with the guys you gotta stun thrown in the mix made some situations painful for me. I don't like that ya couldn't save normally and had to rely on autosave by moving onto or back to another scene. Taking down stealthy was fun if not unnerving trying to not get caught! Exploring to find all the riddles was fun to. And I liked getting up to high places and just roaming/gliding around. Pretty good game overall! Will take interest in the sequel upon its inevitable goty re-release.

Bayonetta
- 6 hours 20 minutes 16 seconds
Once I started skipping cutscenes (they were just to much for me and I didn't care for the story or characters anyway) from chapter 6 on this game flew right by. Helped that I had toned down the difficulty from normal ta very easy. Its such a short game I'll prolly replay it someday just for something to do and cause there were some neat fights. Not that I wanna go through awful platforming/vehicle/shooter segments again. I played unpatched/uninstalled an found the load times nothing ta whine about. If thats all was wrong with the PS3 version then people musta forgotten what sucky load times were like back when it was common. This is my kind of game but also kind of not cause the control and movement and stuff never clicked with me. Decent for a very easy cheesey mindless button mashing romp at least for me.

This is certainly true so far, but I seem to reach a weird zen-state when grinding is involved. Ever since the original Breath of Fire and the Goblin fight in the Stone Robot that took me frickin' hours to beat (without losing, even!) I've seen the beauty of grinding and it really doesn't bother me.

I'm now right where Talon quit.

The challenge of Bayonetta was purely timing. To pull off all the best combos and such, you had to perfectly time dodges to activate 'Witch (or more accurately Bullet) Time.' It was possible to get a perfect game where you could get a straight combo from beginning to end if you have excellent timing. And with a endless stage combo, you would get like a thousand coins.

Another one down. Turns out my backlog dwindles pretty fast if I stop dicking around in RPGs and actually do the final, short story missions!

The Last Remnant
56 hours

I'm probably going to write a longer review, but...yeah, what a weird game. That said, it's kind of sad that when Japanese devs ask themselves "what do gaijin dogs think is an appealing character design?", the best they can come up with is, in essence, Sephiroth with a goatee.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3
- 1 ~ 2 hours
I love getting all the chaos emeralds early on cause the Super Sonic of old ruled. Then I would get to the last level and collect over 50 rings and accidentally activate it before the real boss and get screwed by it running out due to that stupidly long Sonic in the ship scene towards the end. This time was no different x_x! Still my fave Sonic game cause its short and most of the levels are pretty great and all of the bonus stages are fun.

Mega Man Powered Up
- 1 ~ 2 hours
This time I beat the game on easy (duh) as Alley Cat Roll which made this game even cuter =^_^= I like how she and everyone has different dialogue to take into account that she's not Mega! The downside to Roll is that she has only one attack and its a close range fish-sword swing. Against robot masters like Bomb Man and Time Man I had a hard time especially when it came to the refight room! 9 bosses with only 3-4 lives 2 of which I basically gave to the mentioned RMs. Still aside from some stuff like that it was way enjoyable!

That just screams gimmick to me. If the game is meant to be and best played in WT then WT should be active throughout the entire playthrough. Can the game be played through without it? Yes (aside from some "puzzles") but it would it be remotely enjoyable? Going by what I played not so much! Activating WT over and over is akin to spamming the same attack over and over is akin to button mashing which is how I played the game. A better balance with less reliance on that one gimmick prolly woulda made it a whole lot better.

I think not dicking around helps in all games lol. And 56 hours is alot for a story playthrough! I dun mind spending that much time or more with a game but by a time like that you really shoulda been done with the main story, unless its really just that long a game (see DQVIII). Keep up the good playing!

Well, it's part of the challenge of the game. And you can't really spam Witch Time since it only activates on a well timed dodge and it gets canceled once you're struck, so it's really about rewarding skill. Compared to Devil May Cry, which was over-engineered as an insane button mashing combo machine (especially Dante in DMC4), Bayonetta in a sense simplifies everything with the leeway created from Witch Time. And it increases difficulty by taking away Witch Time on Infinite Climax Non-Stop mode except from magic items.

The gimmicks of the game was really all the hyper sexual S&M torture fatality attacks you could finish off enemies with.
