I always just assumed those Pokemon just had a horrible sense of direction.

In any case, the game is really fun, though it takes longer then any of the past PMD games for the plot to really pick up, though once it does, I've heard it's a doozy.

February 19th, if Serebii is correct. But you Europeans do get Mario and Luigi: Paper Jam earlier though! :p

Anyways, I think I'll be picking this up tomorrow since I don't wanna be left out on the fun and this PMD looks really good. I've also been wanting to rediscover PMD since I haven't played the games since my GBA broke a long while ago, and GtI's demo really didn't sell me on the game.

Unsure on starter/partner, may go as Treecko/Pikachu or Froakie/Pikachu. Haven't looked up anything but some mechanics for the games, so idk what'll be the best combination. Anyone else decided their starter/partner yet?

I'll be going Piplup/Chikorita when I get to a place that actually stocks the game. (Read: Christmas)

Guess I'll have to avoid internet for an extra month c:

Also the game plays pretty heavy off of nostalgia so I'd imagine that if you haven't played the ds games some charm may be lost or idkkkk

I so wish I could redo one of my favorite combos (Shawn the Piplup, Gus the Meowth) but alas. I too will have to wait for Christmas.

Geez.

This game really doesn't play around in the last third compared to the previous games (And I thought the events leading up to the finale in Gates were jarring enough, what with
Spoiler: show
Kyurem seemingly murdering Hydreigon and beating you to a pulp)
.

EDIT: And now I'm finished. I felt almost certain that this game's story would end up being my favorite in the series, but I think I liked Gates better still, mostly because of how it handled its characters (Small group of characters with a good amount of development > tons of characters with little to no development).

Once I get PSMD in Feb (Yay for Feb release in Aus!) I'll be going Chikorita and Totodile because of the good type coverage they have together, also, gen 2 is my favourite.

But yeah, I'm going to try to avoid spoilers but this is the internet which means spoilers at every corner.

Besides the story, which was fantastic, I liked a lot of the small changes that made the game feel different from other PMD games. Hunger depletes faster, floors are longer, leveling is slower, and you are ever more reliant on your surroundings for having good emeras, which give you powerful buffs but are only temporary. The game felt a lot more difficult than before, which I liked. It's not a crushing difficulty though, with oran berrires temporarily increasing max hp and most of the older seeds and orbs becoming wands which can be used multiple times per item slot. PSMD went in a new direction in terms of how you play through the game and I enjoyed it.

>hunger depletes faster

Last thing I needed to hear. There's "difficulty" and there's "annoyance." A game that is supposedly all about exploration should not be hindering my efforts with every step. I can manage: but I shouldn't have to manage. It's an unfun mechanic that requires the backpack to be filled with boring but necessary food items instead of allowing for more fun-to-use items.

I'll probably pick this one up used. I have a backlog forming on 3DS with games I already own (tail end of Layton Vs. PW, all of AA5, most of ORAS) so it's hard to justify purchasing yet another $40 game. Can wait until $30 or less arrives on the used market, I think.

Well I mean its not ridiculous but it is faster. Another thing is that general dungeon length is a lot shorter so the amount of food you have to bring is similar to other games(at least for all the story dungeons and most of the dungeons in general). If anything its balancing because with how hunger worked in previous games I could make 15-25 floors, depending on how much HP I had, whereas in this game I can make at most 7-8 without eating anything.

Honestly, it's less that hunger depletes faster and more of the average floor size being unquestionably bigger than Rescue Team/Explorers were. Also you deplete 3 HP/step this time instead of 1 if you ever go hungry.

Besides, with this game, hunger's the least of your worries. If you don't know how to item manage, you're screwed.

So I got this for Christmas. Went with Fennekin and Riolu as the partner. Initial thoughts:

Spoiler: show
So I've gone into summer vacation at this point. First, this has been nagging me: Who's been able to take the request from Axew? You know, the one where he has you take down a Salamence? That should be way too hard for you at that time...unless you have three Blast Seeds and a Confuse Wand. It takes more than the blast seeds to beat him damage wise, but either way, the thing is majorly cheeseable, and so I cheesed him to the floor-AND NOW I HAVE A LEVEL 50 SALAMENCE I CAN CALL UPON. Later on, a simple escort mission with a Petilil gives me a LEVEL 55 Dragonite. I have yet to hit level 14. The freebies are astonishing, and that's from actual quests-never mind recruiting Victini from CHATTINH IT UP IN TOWN, even if it's level 19. But on from that! I like what they did with the plot so far. I also appreciate the callbacks to earlier games. Finding Croagunk in the Cafe will have him reminisce upon the Swap Cauldron, which makes me wonder how anyone got him apart from it. I've seen enough of GtI lets play to recognize Quagsire, who is a callback down to their speech pattern. Teddiursa and Ursaring are there on occasion, the former talking about wanting to evolve, the latter saying that the result of Teddiursa being just like him might not go well, a callback to Time/Darkness/Sky for those smart enough to remember the two.
Dungeons themselves are...odd. Before, waypoints let you save, but not deposit items, now it's the other way around. The Looplets are interesting (I wear a SpAtk one, my partner a many-notched Weather one), and the effects are useful. Wanda are slightly OP (especially with enough Wand Expert Boosts preventing their numbers from going down, but at the same time, bosses are much more cheese resistant (Truant Wand SO OP, though). It's a little easy, but also fun, and the bosses are set up to prevent them from being cheesed to hell. It's fine by me.

Yeah I didn't even need Blast Seeds or Wands to get the Salamence, lol. I had Froakie and got really good luck with Water Pulse confusing it to death. Didn't even realize it was so difficult/high-leveled until it was in my party. I've had similar thoughts in recruiting the Salamence, Dragonite, and Victini, among others. It's definitely weird, and it's one of the only complaints I have about the game because they could've done a much better job with the level curve. Or even just having your recruit Bagon/Dratini that early on instead. Beats me.

In fact, with how hard this game is, you're actually encouraged to use items if you want to make it through alive. That part of the game is really blatantly telling you that, no, you can't brute force your way with just your moves with the more difficult situations this time.

Thoughts in the spoiler box, picked Treecko as starter and Charmander as partner. Still relatively early in though.

Spoiler: show
I'm up to Chapter 4, midway through the School Forest. I have to say, that this game is pretty good so far. Although trying to rotate directions while staying in place is kind of annoying.

One thing I've noticed is that the damage difference between SE moves and NVE moves isn't really that high, like maybe 3-4 points difference? The amount of damage you take is also on the higher side to me, idk if it's comparable to the older entries since it's been forever since I've played them. Brute forcing things definitely isn't a good strategy, item usage really is encouraged. But is using limited usage wands a good thing against like, random wild 'Mons?

Anyways, still enjoyable, and the music is pretty good too.

Also, for anyone who has played the game, how useful is the speed stat, exactly?

Just started the game today! Chose Fennekin as my Pokemon and Squirtle as my partner, just like my starter choices in Pokemon X. I like both starters, but more importantly... (Mechanics Spoiler)

Spoiler: show
I wanted one Pokemon with Mega-Evolving potential and one without. I heard that Mega Evolution factors into this game, but there's also something else called "Awakening" that Pokemon even without Mega-Evolving can do... I don't know that much about it because I didn't want to be spoiled any more than that, but I wanted to be able to compare the two. I had originally thought of picking Fennekin/Totodile, but this changed my choice from Totodile to Squirtle.

I also have a question for y'all... (Slight Early-Game Spoiler)

Spoiler: show
So, when I met my Squirtle partner, he introduced his "pop", who was a Carracosta. This made me curious... Does the partner Pokemon's father change species depending on who you pick, or is Carracosta always the father figure for your partner? I'm really curious.
