Are you sure this is the place you want to be at? I think that Daisy's artitorium and Copygoo's art are much better choices if you are looking for fine art. You're not? You can settle for subpar touchpad art?? You are weird. But, none the less......
Well, i might as well start off with a little bit of fun. And by fun, I mean adorable ghostly balloons. Spoiler: show You will see as time goes by this little Drifloon advance and stuff. Stay tuned. As well as for more art. Well, double posting is bad. Spoiler: show Well, might as well for this little balloons quest. It needs a menu.

Made my first recolor today, and it came out pretty awesome if I may say so myself.
Credits goes to Yuki for removing the background from it.

EDIT: Have made a couple more for MM, seeing as he now has a gray Venipede. Still need to find out how to get rid of the background.

>I used colors from a humpy sprite. I know, I'm a bad person. But, seeing as this was my first, I tried to keep it simple.
There's nothing wrong with using other pallets, just watch your shading. The sprites look kind of metallic and matte because the colors are too similar. If that's what you're going for, you've done it, but even gray pallets are going to have some pretty noticeable difference in the shades. Try highlighting things with off-whites and light greys and make the darker portions granite grays. |

Re: Pidove--it could use some areas of less saturated color. When everything is that bright, nothing really stands out and there's no place for the eye to rest. Plus there's not much contrast between colors and it makes some details a little hard to make out, the eye in particular.
What program are you using for the recolors?

So I am avoiding studying so I thought I'd whip up an example of what I'm talking about.
Pardon the white background I didn't save it on my compy directly so it didn't do transparent fancypants stuff. The colors I used are to the right and are based off this that I just pulled off Google images. This is pretty similar to what you did, but it has a little more diversity in color. What you have is a good start, but you focus far too much on the monotone shades. By leaving a bit of contrast - like the eye (which I didn't change at all) or the lighter, pinker portions - the sprite has a bit more pop to it. Also, be conscious of your outlines when recoloring sprites. A lot of the time, the outlines are going to be really dark on darker colored sprites like Pidove, and when you try to do a one-for-one swap on outer lines with a lighter color, it'll look weirdly washed out. Paint is okay if you really like it but I'd suggest going for something a little more powerful if you want to get better. Paint is so limiting in a lot of ways and while you can make really impressive stuff in it, it's really not a good program to build fundamentals with. If you're looking for something free that's a good step up, I'd recommend Paint.NET. It's sort of like happy medium between the simplicity of MS Paint and the power of Photoshop and allows you to do all kinds of cool things without having to learn all the ins and outs of PS. EDIT: Also Paint.NET does transparent backgrounds which Paint is stupid about and can't properly do! So there's that!

Blaze, I give you permission to shade the sprite! It does look better with shading and this'll be good practice as well :>

Anyway, Jeri's right, you should keep shading in mind. I didn't say anything since it was a first attempt and I didn't really have time/want to sound critical. Do keep it up, as practice makes perfect. =) Edit- Oh yeah, here you go:

For what it's worth, all my spriting has been MS Paint.

I am trying GIMP now, since it allows me to reference the original sprite for any shading needs.
Second try agogo?

I actually like Blaze's newest attempt more than Jeri's. Jeri's looks purty and all but it's so faint that it looks artificial. Blaze's looks richer/fuller in color and thus more like what I'd imagine an orange-ified Pidove to look like.

To be fair, mine was done in 10 minutes as a demonstration of color, so it's not really meant to be particularly good.
Also I tried to make mine rust-colored, so it's gonna be a bit duller.

On the Pidove recolour, it still looks blocky around the edges. Try using a darker shade of the orange on the bits of the outline that aren't black. That way it looks a lot smoother, and you don't get little pixels sticking out of it. (This only really applies if you're using transparency. If you don't use transparency, then it doesn't matter because its white.)
Looks good though, maybe soon you should start moving towards splices and revamps. |

*Blaze used Spellbook of Life on his art thread*
So, instead of doing anything worthwhile for the past evening, I decided that taking 45 minutes without having any sleep and running off of a cup of coffee from two hours ago was the perfect time to start doing some pen and paper drawing. So, what did I decide to do? Instead of the usual Drifloons and Seedots, I decided that drawing something complicated was the perfect things to do. So, I decided to draw Vylon Alpha, since Vylons are cool. I have to get to my grandmother's to scan the picture, but I should have it in today for you people to judge. And it is so not perfect. Very, very imperfect.

I swear I revive this thread more than I revive Grapha in the average duel.
So, after getting in touch with my inner Daisy(who sadly hasn't been fed in a while), I decided that again the only time to do anything creative is 4:30 in the morning. I finished the despair-inducing Junkoboo Spoiler: show
