Every time someone says "Nair" to refer to "Neutral Air", this gets 1 step closer to being an item in Smash Bros.
Spoiler: show What would you say are the most obvious character strengths and weaknesses?

From what I've played of the demo, the Gust Bellows are absolutely ridiculously powerful and will be turned off in every single match I play in the full release. Fuck. That. Shit. So easy to just rack up kills with a perfect edgeguarding machine.

Yeah some of these items are crazy. I think my favorite was camping the super flag with a home run bat. I got so many kills because of the AI. I also really hate the Beetle item, just, fuck that shit.
Re:Pika Yeah, Pika has gotten nerfed, maybe not as bad as Meta Knight, but still a hard nerf. I can easily rack up damage with him because my moves at least make it so I can recover if they hit, but he lacks a lot of KO potential and the thunder Nerf is kinda bad. Hopefully customs can save him...

Oh god the freaking GUST BELLOWS ITEM that thing is ridiculously good at guarding edges. It's just freaking hilarious.
In other news, Villager is fucking scary. And I don't mean his OPness. |

The customise character options are cool. You can change Pikachu's weakened Thunder for one that's stronger, but slower and locks Pikachu into where it's standing. Villager gets some great options for fucking around with people too.

That stated, I'm very pleased to hear of this alternate Pikachu mode that the player may enable if he so chooses for casual play. I've long disliked how unimpressive Thunder looks and feels in the Smash Bros. games, so if there's a way for me to make it more grand -- slower and more devastating -- then I'm all for it. In fact, I wish that they'd simply made both attacks part of the standard moveset:

There's some discussion about how customs will work right now and the community seems in favor of them as it is now for their deepening potential. I think, at least for now, customs are going to be tried out and worked into rules.

If that's true, then that's pretty awesome. While it would mean that tournament Pikachu players need to adapt to a new playstyle or else say good-bye to their electric friend, it would also at least mean that Pikachu can be or might be tourney-grade material still. With the mobility of a Squirtle or a Yoshi coupled with the smash sluggishness and power of a DK, he could fill a very fun and interesting niche. And, courtesy of that slow smash, one which won't be as attractive to spammers, thus freeing the fans from the unrelenting stream of "PIKA!"s that so colored previous Smash Bros. games.

I feel like any nerf to Pikachu's Thunder is great news for anyone who plays SSB with children.

Custom moves are to tournament play what Smash Potato (and any other silly games you can play if you agree on the rules) is to casual play. You could have a tournament where custom moves are allowed. You could have a tournament where they aren't. You could have a tournament with specific custom moves that are non-negotiable, or a tournament with a restricted amount of custom moves.
It's really not much different from "a tournament where items are allowed" except that items are generally agreed to be stupid and universally hated except for the smash ball and the poke balls.

... is it just me that quite likes items in vaguely serious play? Not, like, all items, but some items.

Some items add a bit of a strategic element to play, which is always a good thing.

Yes, I was using hyperbole. There's nothing wrong with liking items.

Items are fun but boy are they hard to balance, which is why they don't end up in tourney play.
EDIT: POST YOUR ROSTERS, FRIENDS.

I haven't watched too many gameplay videos so this is based off of who I liked playing in Brawl, who I like from the demo, and characters who I just plain dig a whole lot like Lucina.
