Neglected to mention this update before - got myself temporary catering work (kitchen and bar bitch, essentially) whilst I try to sort out something more interesting/stable for my upcoming year. Due to illness I was unable to sit my final exams this year, am sitting them next June (not otherwise returning to uni, it's literally a case of revise on my own time and come back for the week of exams). So I'm hunting for short term positions. Just applied for a maternity cover position as a lab technician at a school (given I have practical lab experience, did an optional teaching module as part of my degree and am giving serious thought to doing a PGCE), which I'd quite like to get.

Shit, that sucks man, didn't know/have forgotten that you were ill for exams. Good luck with the apps and have fun in catering! PGCEs seem fun but consider the QTS version which is basically a teaching apprenticeship i.e. you get paid.

Yeah it's kind of a pain in the arse, but I wasn't sure what to do with myself once I'd graduated anyway. Knowing I'm only hunting for things to do between now and next June makes me less bothered about the risk of getting stuck in something I end up not enjoying. It's also given me the free time to pursue some personal projects - I've written and submitted a couple of draft articles to Cracked, begun work on a couple of potential blog ideas and sat down and started to get to grips with Python.

Great stuff, nicely done. I think I have half of a draft of a Cracked article somewhere but their liaison system is not great so I think I fell through their "we will hire anyone" phase.

Also I'm finally bothering with LinkedIn because after a year and a half in politics I really have no excuse any more. LinkedIn is just so hard for me to care about ;;

Yesterday I went with my Dad for one of his calls, because the hospitals he was servicing had an opening. It was a nice small clinic in a nice neighbourhood, although there's too many negatives to entice me to work there (day shift only, no clinical rotation, car is pretty much mandatory).

Turns out catering work really sucks when the smell of tuna makes you retch.

Aww, sorry to hear that. Hopefully you won't have to deal with tuna soon again since it makes you feel that way. Me personally, I love tuna. Not sure I'd want to drown in its smell for hours on end, but I do like eating tuna.

Mostly not, it's just that yesterday I happened to be on potwashing duty for a while and there was this big half used slightly expired tub of tuna mayo which made me sad. Still, it's money whilst I look for something more long term/science based. Should be financially able to end this couple months stint of living with the parents again by the end of September - if I've found a better job by then, excellent, if not I'll still move out and keep doing what I'm doing now whilst job hunting.

Just applied for two school lab technician posts. Conveniently they both used the same Oxfordshire County Council application form and had very similar job adverts, so I essentially got two applications done in not much longer than it would normally take to do one. Woo for efficiency!

Temp work is Satan.

So my temp agency called me yesterday and asked me to do a shift from 7.30am-2pm today. Fine, I agreed. I turn up, manager comes out and says "yeah, you're in the cafe today". Hour and a half of potwashing later, this manager gets into an argument with the housekeeping manager which eventually is resolved when the first manager looks at his books and realises he has no temps scheduled and I was in fact supposed to be with housekeeping. But housekeeping start at 9. So my agency told me a starting time an hour and a half before I needed to be there (which cuts into my sleep as I was working until midnight last night). That's fml #1. Then the housekeeping manager needs me until 6, some 4 hours beyond what I was supposed to be working. That's fml #2. Fml #3 comes at the end of the shift; housekeeping manager signs me off from 9-6, because that's when she had me, but won't sign me off for the first hour and a half I did in the cafe because in fairness she has no way of knowing for sure how long I was there before she showed up. The manager who initially "mistakenly" grabbed me (apparently this manager is a complete arse so I'm not sure I believe the "mistakenly") is nowhere to be found, so I can't get anyone to sign off my timesheet so I get paid for that first hour and a half.

I am going to have strong words with my agency contact.

So I lost my job a week and a half ago. First time it's happened to me and I didn't really know how to deal with it. Have applied for a few things but really I'm just trying to figure out what I should be doing with my life. It's rocked me a bit and all of my productivity has been funnelled in to it. That's flagged in the last few days.

Anyone ever been asked to leave a job? How do you deal?

So, I've been offered a job. The pay is excellent and if I did well it would set up my political career very nicely. However, it's a horrible job in terms of the absolutely insane hours and the myriad difficult tasks as well as it involving a level of responsibility, people and time management and accountability I've never really had. I recently lost a job so can't afford to lose another one unwillingly, which would be a risk if I took it and was then not up to it. I would also have to move cities to take this job.

Should I accept it? I have two other job interviews coming up.

When do they need to know by? When would you expect an answer from your next two interviews?

The guys offering and one of the interviews know each other so they know that I have that interview and have said they'll wait. So, Tuesday night really. I would have to tell the related interview of the offer and to be honest the other one I have two for the purposes of look I need to know now.

Obviously you should take the job because it sounds great and totally not because that way I get someone to hang out with regularly.

You severely overestimate the free time I would have. Plus aside from you I know no-one there so will end up travelling a bit.

According to my parents, teachers are now making $60,000 per year.

What a shock! Why did I bother to go to graduate school, then?! When I was a student teachers were making $35,000-$44,000. Apparently, the unions have put someone's balls in a vicegrip and that number has shot up dramatically lately. There's a chronic teacher shortage, especially for the sciences/math, but wow oh wow.
