Which Pokemon series should I watch?
I won't be continuing the anime into the Galar region. I've already decided that a return to "form" for Pokemon would be a step backward I'm not prepared to take. So I'm willing to die and be buried in Alola.
I'm considering watching some of the older Pokemon anime and I've been debating with myself what to watch in full. SM ends later this year and it will be the only series I've 1CC'd (I didn't even finish OS). DP would be a natural pick because of the alleged quality, but I hate contests and that was a major negative. BW is inconsistent, but Talon and BPK have vouched for it. AK2 has been pro-XY. Any feedback is welcome!

I honestly can't say I enjoyed any of the anime after Misty left, but anything before the point Brock left is...passable, I suppose.

Cilan's entire personality was just "I can cook" so at least Brock had something else to work with.

D/P and X/Y are definitely worth watching. You can skip the Contest/Showcase episodes if you so choose.
B/W... I got mixed feelings. It's not horrible, but at the same time, I can't deny its many flaws. Iris and Cilan aren't terrible characters, but they definitely could've been handled better. And the series definitely does have its moments. Overall, it's not winning any awards for best series, but it's definitely watchable. But, uh, just be warned, the fourth Gym is quite possibly the lowest point. It will make you want to reach through the screen and punch Ash in the face. |

I've picked up BW for now because it has a convenient batch torrent, while I can't actually find anything for DP and XY. That doesn't mean I won't pick them up...but I'm going to take what I can get.

Which gym was Ash's fourth in BW? I've got a sneeeaking suspicion that it's Driftveil's, but.

The Contests were the best addition to the series, and if you don't watch them you're missing out.
The Johto saga is considered the original low point of the anime for the obvious reasons of sheer mass of fillers, Misty gets stale/loses her personality, the pokemon on the cast are lackluster, and it's just a long more boring version of the Kanto arc since the anime staff had no idea what direction to take the series in yet. The immense dislike of it from the original fans over 17 years ago in the early 2000's when it was airing is why the writers abandoned the original trio as a group revamped it for Hoenn and never looked back. Hell half the original fanbase originally got bored and stopped watching when Johto was originally airing and this along with the original fad dying was all around this time back in 2001-2002. |

Nimbasa's a Gym that gives a lot of people trouble in the games, too (provided they don't go and catch sandile in the desert right before it), so having it be challenging in the anime makes sense. But if the issue is Ash being bad at pokemon, then... yeeg.

Ah. The gym fight that always, always leaps to the front of my mind whenever I think about how much Ash annoys me is Driftveil.
Because why pray tell the fuck do you need to use Attract to beat a Palpitoad with a Servine? (Less related to Ash, Clay's reaction to this is so extremely out of character it makes me scream. Clay in the games is always a more subdued type, even when angry. In that scene they make him look like a petulant child whose parents didn't buy him a chocolate bar at the grocery store even as a grown man.) Why pray tell the FUCK do you proceed to send a basic stage pure rock type against an Excadrill?

I'm actually quite surprised that Ash isn't as "dumb" as people say he is. A lot of his questionable decisions are more an act of faith to inspire certain Pokemon to perform.
Given this is a rookie team and he's not in "rated" battles with no consequences, I find a lot of this experimentation passable. What I don't tolerate is Pikachu being owned by Pokemon like Panpour. Perhaps a plus is he actually catches Pokemon here, and doesn't bend on one knee and propose to the Pokemon to join his party. This is legitimately how he's caught every Pokemon in Sun & Moon!

DP and XY are both good. DP is streamed on Twitch from Thursday to Sunday though so if you like twitch chat being twitch chat then do that

I'm through Episode 20 of Best Wishes and there's been exactly one episode of filler.
And by "filler" I mean a skippable episode with no change to the status quo, so for an episode to be filler it must not involve: -meeting a recurring character -getting a new Pokemon -learning a new move -some milestone achievement (like winning a badge) Only the Darumaka episode qualifies as filler. SM is either all filler, or none of it is filler, by this definition. Because there are no COD's, every character introduced becomes recurring at some point, meaning there are penalties for skipping episodes. OS had "filler" in this sense as well, although most people don't think of it as such because OS had individually well written adventures. Would you pass off "The Ghost of Maiden's Peak" or "Mystery at the Lightouse". Although when I look back at the first season of OS, like BW almost every episode had some major event.
