There's absolutely no reason to other than to up your post count.

Everybody knows there is an issue, counting the number of times it happens solves nothing.

You don't understand, and it'd take too long to explain it in full detail. Suffice to say, the server has been beset by no fewer than two unique problems in the past two months. One of the server problems affects only certain users and is cleared by simply closing your browser. The other of the problems, the current one, appears to affect all users, cannot be fixed by the user on their end, and self-resolves within five to ten minutes. However, it's important to find out if it really is affecting all users. By reporting that an error has been experienced, it informs others who might have been surfing the site with absolutely no hiccups that "Hey, I should speak up and report that I didn't experience that error just now," so that we can understand if the two problems are similar (and just affecting different groups of users) or if, more likely, they're two entirely unrelated problems. If everyone's experienced it, it's Error #2. If only a small handful of users have experienced it while others can confirm that they have not, then it's probably Error #1.

tl;dr Error #2 may be masking Error #1 and/or Error #1 may be being confused for Error #2. This is important to sort out before dropping even more money on unnecessary repairs.

No, Tdos is right, this is an inefficient use of time. Keep a log and PM it to Kuno when you have significant data points man. Not enough people pay attention for it to work.

If I were to use a log, there is no way in Hell anyone would remember whether they could access UPN at the times I reported it going down or not. All a log would be good for would be to tell Kuno, "Talon lost a connection to UPN at these times." He doesn't need to know that. He already knows I, and others, are losing connections.

What's important to know is, when I (or anyone else for that matter) lose a connection, is it felt by 1) no one else? 2) some others? or 3) everyone else? And the reason it's important to know is because, I repeat, the server's already plagued by another problem, one you inadvertently tipped us off on at the very start of this thread that you haven't had the displeasure of dealing with. I have. Morg has. Kuno and Loki and have not. It's relevant information for the parties repairing the server to know whether they're going after a problem that only affects certain parts of the world (and would thus require one type of fix) or whether they're going after a problem that affects all of us (which would likely require a completely different fix).

[12:18] DarkChromDra: Is UPN down again?

That was when I tried to access earlier. So, depending on the time-stamp, this might be after Talon's or during. We'll see.

My stamp is 5:44 PM, my clocks suggest 20:44 PM, so looks like I experienced the down-time at the same time as Talon.

It was down for me at around half 10 this morning (GMT). Don't know when things came back up, I was busy watching shows and taking a shower.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure he owns the server.

They let farm animals own servers in Canada? Weird.

Also I haven't noticed any problems at all with UPN, so I guess it must just hate you guys and love me =3

And for the longer explanation...

There seem to have some hardware problem with the server for about a week now. Of course having to order some guy that doesn't speak English to look up the issue from 2000 miles away isn't helping much.

The datacenter which rent the hardware are pretty much assholes to replace their equipment without total proofs it's the server fault. I might have found some way to prove and reduce the amount of crashes by underclocking the CPU but don't assume it's fixed for now.

For the CloudFlare thing it's a free CDN, caching, spam protection service as long as you don't mind it gathering stats and data about your site that they reuse to sell better protection plans to their paying customers. UPN alone uses about 100GB of bandwidth monthly and 80% of that is used only by static images so it's very nice to be able to offload that to them.

Whoa!

Talon: I wonder how much of that is ...
moo:
Talon: ... I wonder how much of that is ... *gulp* ...

No, but seriously, that's quite surprising. Is it because of webcrawlers and spybots that keep looking over old threads and thus fetch-requesting any and all embedded and hyperlinked pictures in those threads? Like, what I'm asking is, if we could magically axe all the spambots and webcrawlers, would that have a significant impact on the monthly bandwidth consumption? Or would it remain high even if UPN only one two human beings and zero bots using it at any given time?

After raging for hours at the tech guys last night: "Oh sorry, the CPU fan was dead all this time and it took us 2 weeks to notice."

They replaced it and now everything seems way better.

You might want to get them to blow on the fan or something.
