I've been watching Bunny Girl Senpai too, and as of now, it's really the only thing keeping my interest this season outside of watching SSSS Gridman with friends. I'm worried because imo the next few episodes will probably make or break it in terms of whether it goes in the direction I'm hoping it does or if it goes in the opposite direction. Either way it's got good banter so I'll probably watch it all the way through.

How can I not try this out now? =3= I'm just posting in to say that apparently on the Nyaruko soundtrack (released FIVE FREAKING YEARS AGO!!), Mahiro's CV (none other than Kitamura Eri) did a cover of..."Kishin Houkou Demonbane". This is hilarious, because Nyarlathotep is the main antagonist of Demonbane, while she's the heroine in Haiyore! Nyaruko-chan. I know it's Mahiro singing but still...this is great.

I wish wish wish wish wish I could communicate this to people. I know many of my former high school classmates live miserable lives right now, even those considered well-off my society's standards. All because of this. They create it and are blind to the world around them.

No idea what to expect from Bunny Show - very happy that I picked it up.
SAO, Goblin Slayer, Slime are enjoyable. Zombieland Saga - like the premise, but didn't keep my attention |

GS ep5. I thought I remembered things wrong, NOPE. They just decided to not draw him without his armor on.
Spoiler: show I continue to say, this show looks so cheap. Everything is drawn plainly, even action on the screen seems boring. It's so weird the state of anime is in right now. Series that I know have good story/writing like Berserk and Goblin Slayer look like absolute shit. While series that have shit writing like SAO and Attack on Titan have beautiful animation and really sells the series. Not only that, the Director was a Key Animator on One Punch Man. I feel like she should know how to make a beautiful scene. It can't just be bad direction or poor decisions. It has to be budget constraints or short development time. |

I don't understand it myself. We can debate whether an SAO ought to have good animation or not, and we can discuss dollar-votes and depraved otaku keeping the industry afloat all we like. But it still doesn't explain why Berserk's grand return to television would have been so fucking awful. Nor does it explain why a newer property like Goblin Slayer, one new enough and (relatively) unheard of enough that it fits the normal billing of "We make the anime to promote sales of the source material! ", would be getting such a poor television adaptation. It's just strange all around.

Art/animation, even voice actor quality is an easy one. It's always tied to how much budget is available, and you can see that from which production companies are involved. Anime quality can serve different purposes, either as a big commercial to sell novel volumes or as a stand-alone work to sell itself and related merchandise.
SAO is both. So is Shingeki no Kyojin. Overlord was unfortunately the former. What is more frustrating now is the direction of a title. Goblin Slayer could have all the budget problems you mention be hand-waived if the adaptation was spot on. But it isn't, and those flaws expose the low budget even further. Even looking at good directors with a strong history of success, they can have flops too. And this happens in Hollywood as it does elsewhere. That's why you have to watch and find out. Speaking of OPM, it had questionable direction as well. It reoriented what was otherwise a gag-focused story into an action-focused one, which is weird when every fight ends in a predictable anti-climax. A lot of the comedic timing for small scenes came across as awkward or forced. But at least the OPM director knew what he was doing when he did that...sometimes, you get the impression directors don't have a clue at what makes the source material popular.

Picked up SSSS.Gridman. It is a nostalgic fun time. I still remember Superhuman Samurai Syber Squad, the weird show which had Martin Lawrence (younger brother or Joey Lawrence) and his high school band go into the internet and fought kaiju made by the school emo and Tim Curry as the internet Lord Zed. This is basically the same thing. And it's glorious.

Slime Tensei's budget is insane.
I wish I had the patience to make animated .gifs for a few of the scenes to showcase this. But like, even ordinary scenes ooze of a richer budget than even the best scenes in Overlord or Youjo Senki. I did make an animated .gif from something recently, howevers.

I added GAIKOTSU SHOTENIN HONDA-SAN to my list as well, and it's in caps because I find it fucking hilarious for a comedy revolving around the happenings as a book shop assistant... who's a skeleton.
Wholly recommend it for those in need of a mood lifter. |

Slime Tensei
This is the AOTS, barring Golden Kamuy (which I have not caught up on). I look forward to it every week and get annoyed when the episode is done. It's surprisingly approachable - not super cringeworthy, not super self-insert, and not super power-levely. This week was about the worst of it but it came across as pretty inoffensive. There's enough character D so that things don't get annoying. I think Muyo would approve of how Shizu's background was handled - bare bones, but it got the message across quite quickly. Giratina and Shaymin I forget the actual name of this movie, but it was bad. That the Sinnoh movies are consistently rated the highest of Pokemon is distressing. Rise of Darkrai was not a good film, it was average at best. This is well below average even if Giratina became a lot more affable toward the end of the story. I've downloaded the BW movies, which will be my first foray into Best Wishes. I believe I will start with the Keldeo movie and work backwards because the BW movies don't appear to have a set order that matters. After this + Arceus I will head off into the ADV movies and finish hopefully finish with Pokemon's The Empire Strikes Back, Spell of the Unown. That should be a good segway into Everyone's Story which Lord Starfish and Adamant (?) have said is the best Pokemon movie ever made. I will probably agree with them with a caveat - the best Pokemon movies are the ones that have the least involvement of the feature Pokemon. This seems counter-intuitive, but how I'd rank the films I've seen to date, from best to worst: I Choose You! Mewtwo (+ Origin of Mewtwo) 2000 3 (need to rewatch, high priority) Volcanion & Magearna Diancie Darkrai Hoopa Shaymin & Giratina It's surprising that a 7.0 film in ICY tops the list, but I was basing that against the TOS trilogy which was a high standard. The Gen VI, IV movies have been overall bad, which makes me feel like I underrated it. Mewtwo is better, but only with Origin, otherwise it's below Volcanion. Eagerly awaiting Everyone's Story raws.

I'm through the Keldeo movie and halfway through the Victini movie.
I'm surprised Dent = Mamoru Miyano! I never would have expected such a big-name CV to land a spot on Pokemon - this is the franchise that starts careers, not enhances them. Aoi Yuuki as Iris is less shocking considering she's only a year and a half out of her big break (Madoka), her star had not risen yet. The Keldeo movie was watchable but was filled with flaws and filler-y scenes. Like the whole keep Keldeo away from Kyurem which took up 30% of the movie was pointless. I was shocked by Kyurem's power as well - competitive Kyurem is a joke of a legendary, and Kyurem-B is only an OU Pokemon. Yet, this Kyurem with no connection to Zekrom/Reshiram has their power and can freely swap between forms like he's Deoxys. Which makes no sense when the forms are supposed to look like Reshiram/Zekrom fusions but is pretty cool nonetheless. Overall, this movie is pretty much Hoopa and the Clash of Ages but less stupid and annoying. Hoopa was a dumb, bad film: this managed to be a dumb film that was okay, and kind of charming/cool. Keldeo-Kyurem had a lot more tension than anything in the Hoopa film. I was hoping to see stupid Ash, but this is basically DP Ash. I cannot for the life of me notice any personality difference between DP, BW Ash in this movies. There ARE differences between this Ash and XY Ash: XY Ash in the movies wasn't nearly as outgoing and excitable.

I watched an interesting video on Youtube from Tokyosaurus (Link) about how different Japan rates anime from how the West rates anime on My Anime List. While I'm not surprised at there being differences, I thought found it interesting that they rate shows not on individual basis, but rather they would make very direct comparisons between shows.
My favorite show this season is a huge point of contention because Bunny Girl Senpai is rated as highly as JoJo's Bizarre Adventure and is apparently Blasphemy. And SSSS: Gridman isn't the topping the list for us, while it's the hottest topic in Japan. Goblin Slayer has held steady in Japanese view while it has been dipping in the west. Personally this season, my list (which doesn't include any shows I've not seen): 1) Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny Girl Senpai 9/10 - Mai is my waifu. Supernatural mystery, drama, romance, comedy, mocking the imouto genre, great dialogue and characters. I really love this show. 2) SSSS.Gridman 8/10 - Very nostalgic and fun. Also, the girls are T H I C C. Worry that Studio Trigger might still drop the ball, but it looks good so far. 3) Zombieland Saga 8/10 - Super hilarious. Their producer/manager is the best character. 4) Slime Tensei 7/10 - Very pretty, but has a lot of boring episodes. 5) Bloom into You 7/10 - Girl learns about love from her kind of rapey senpai. 6) Goblin Slayer 5/10 - Very cheap looking, very boring, they skipped the farm arc- the best arc. |

I'm not watching Gridman, but from what I've heard part of the appeal is that Gridman is secretly Ultraman and Japan tends to prefer Japanese-original compared to American imports, even if the Japanese version is a direct ripoff of an American counterpart.
Hey Loki, can I get you interested in Golden Kamuy by any chance?

>Pokémon movies
I rewatched the first three movies myself not too long ago via the Pokémon Twitch stream. Spell of the Unown is still a favorite of mine (since I have a lot of personal headcanons surrounding it). <3 The thing that struck me most when watching the second film is just how hesitant and scared Ash was to become a "hero"/the "Chosen One" at first, to the point where he even started crying due to lack of confidence. =( Poor kid, I wanted to hug him. ;; He really was a baby back then. (Granted he recovered quickly from his friends' support, but still. XP) Now he's saved the world dozens of times it probably ain't no thang lol. Sadly the stream skipped over a lot of the films I wanted to see but hadn't yet due to copyright, but I did manage to catch the Lucario movie at last. The plot was kinda disappointingly dumb tbh, and Lucario was an insufferable Naruto Sanic Edgelord (as dubbed by the chat). I did cry at the end though (despite knowing some spoilers). Spoiler: show I did try checking out one of the newer films, but just couldn't get used to the different dub cast. Ash's voice was admittedly a pretty close match, but Brock's was way too deep. x.X P.S. "Polkamon" still scares the pants off me. OTL

It's from Pokemon Ranger and the Temple of the Sea. The villain is a pirate named Phantom and his crew is literally called "fantomu torupu" instead of "genei ryoudan", but it means exactly the same in Japanese and English.

This is how you end an episode? 1 minute and 20 seconds of this? This is such horseshit. They must have literally had no budget to end on an almost still frame (yes, the flame flickers and the eye blinks a few times) instead of... I don't know, any prior non-still scene a bit longer? This following a scene where our titular character collapses from his wounds! This is how we end the episode. With nothing! They should have just saved all their money and gave us a pure black screen for that time period. This isn't artsy, it doesn't add to the story or build on anything. It's just there to waste our time. Fuck the Goblin Slayer anime. @Doppel about Golden Kamuy I read a brief description. I'll think about it. |
