UPN Pokemon World Championship Tournament
FOR THE BATTLE LOGS!!!
FOR THE TEAMS!!!! FOR THE TOURNAMENT BRACKET!!!! So, after the great success of the Monotype tournament, and the UPN Tournament, I figured it might be a good time for use to have another one of these. Since it has been circa four months since the last tournament and probably quite a bit longer since the tournament's heyday, it should be appropriate. Showcasing the UPN POKEMON WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP TOURNAMENT!!! Since Serebii's reveal of the teams of each Gym Leader and Champion in the Black 2 and White 2 Pokemon World Championship, I though that we could have our own little tournament to not only kick off the release of Black 2 and White 2, but to also boost the battling atmosphere because there are so little people nowadays battling. Here are the teams of each Gym Leader and Champion, courtesy of Serebii. Now, as you can see, each team contains a good mix of competitively useful Pokemon such as Ferrothorn and Excadrill to some really poor Pokes likes Unfezant and Heatmor. Since a lot of this is going to be up in the air, I think it would be up to you guys to decide some of what of the rules are, since I have a few ideas. Here are a few of the concrete rules though: 1. You have to use the Pokemon on the team. For example, no Espeon for Red since he doesn't use an Espeon in the tournament. This also means that quite a few Gym Leaders like Roxie and Byron get some nice additions to their groups. 2. Standard PO rules: Sleep Clause, Freeze Clause, Specie Clause, Self-KO Clause, Item Clause. 3. This should go without saying, but Chili/Cress/Cilan count as different Gym Leaders despite having the same gym. 4. Abilities and EV's are up to your choosing. If, however, we see that a Pokemon is going to be too powerful with a chosen ability(like Sand Rush Excadrill), then it is going to banned from the start. Now, here are the things you guys get to pick: 1. Who should we use for teams? It is going to RNGed of course, possibly Livestreamed by someone who can do it or Skyped, but, out of what pool? Should we Champions first and then open the entire pool up? Or should it be picked out of the some-odd 53 Gym Leaders and Champions in the beginning? 2. Do you guys want to use the sets that the Gym Leaders and Champions use themselves(despite them being somewhat poor), or, do you want to pick your own sets? I say the former is easiest because you don't ever have to worry about breaking the item clause, but, it also makes it easier to see your opponent's(and your) sets. 3. Round Robin, or a Double Elimination tournament? A Double Elimination tournament gives you a second chance at getting the crown if you lose, but, a Round Robin allows you to fight each and every person, though, it may get ungainly if it grows to big. We are going to use PO(since it makes it easier to record and save the battles), and, use the Replayer because it is a pretty cool gift. Before we start, there is going to be some Pokemon banning rules: Garchomp is NOT banned if not in Sand. If your team has Sand in it somehow, use Rough Skin. Excadrill with Sand Rush IS banned. Straight. Use Sand Force or Mold Breaker. Drizzle + Swift Swim IS banned. There is a team that has Kingdra and Politoed on it. Speed Boost Blaziken IS banned. Despite FW's (wrong) moaning, it will be banned. Use Blaze. If the Dream World ability is not released(except in the case of banned Pokemon), then don't use it. Pinch berries are not banned because they are technically released through Join Avenue. So, for those of you who are interested at a quick glance what each Gym Leader is getting, check only here for the info: Spoiler: show Above all, have fun folks! I'll sign up, but I'm going on vacation for three weeks. So if I would hold things up, I wouldn't mind being scratched. Now, for your points of discussion...
1. I think it should be an RNG from the whole pool of trainers. Example, person number one might get Cynthia, while person number two gets Juan, and person number three gets Bugsy, and so on. 2. I'd say pick your own sets. It lets people be more creative that way, and would stop people from getting crappy movesets that might cost them a match. 3. Double Elim. Round Robin has been shown in the past to be slow, and not get finished. I'd say double elim would make it faster, and more likely for everyone to get their battles finished.

If you want to do double elimination, by all means go for it. That is a tried-and-true format and it was the format of choice of Loki's OU tournament back in Summer 2010. But don't write off the Round Robin format as a failed format.

Signups are going to continue for the rest of the day. The tournament will start on Monday, but, Tdos can start of Tuesday.
Now, on the matter of importance: We have only had one vote from Phoopes, so, if you guys can answer the questions that would be great. You can edit your post if you want to reduce thread size. Also, would anyone be able to skype/Livestream the RNG rolls for Monday? Tht would be a great help. I am also going to edit into the main post the roster for each trainer.

I'm in. However I will be gone most of next week. I'll have PO with me, I just don't know how much access I'll have.
Also, I vote double elimination.

2. God no. Fuck that, I want to use good stuff. 3. Round Robin, I like that style more. Also, not sure if I saw it, but would we have to stick with the same team of six every match? Some trainers have 10 different Pokémon, some only have six - could we make sets for every Pokémon allocated and mix them around (like the monotype - use six out of a set nine), or are we stuck with the same team? I'd prefer the former, as the ones with only six are the champs - who already have good teams. EDIT the first - Ice and Dragon trainers too, my bad. Not much choice there. Also also, if you desperately need somone to RNG I can do it over Skype tonight if no-one else can. Last edited by DaveTheFishGuy; 07-01-2012 at 01:55 PM. |

Oh yeah, forgot...
I can Livestream an RNG of it tonight, if you need somebody. That way everybody can watch.

whoever can do it. I might not be around but I will try to make it. Sand can be one of the most dangerous weathers, and I am trying only to make it easier for teams who my have no way of beating Sand Rush Excedrill or Sand Veil Garchomp. Plus, Rough Skin is arguably better anyways, and you can still use Sand Rush on Excedrill.

Probably best if Phoopes does it tbh, Livestream's easier to let other people watch than Skype. Plus I'm probably going to bed soon.
>Sand Only teams that have a Sand Streamer are Brock (Tyranitar) and Giovanni (Hippowdon). Giovanni has a Garchomp, but the only way Sand Rush Excadrill's going to be a problem is if someone draws Clay, Steven or Byron and goes up against either of them. Probably best to ban it anyways. |

I need to get PO again. Needles to say, pin me up on this thing.
EDIT alpha: might I suggest when signups close, a PM system is set in place where one can PM their first choice of person to the director (in this case, Blaze), and if they are the only one to request a certain champ or GL, they get the person from the get-go. That might make it a little easier, because that way, some people can get a niche favourite. Just my $0.02

I like Kairne's suggestion, especially considering there are some super shit teams (like Brock) and some super great teams (like Dragon Champs).

The only issue would be that everyone would ask for those teams and we'd end up RNGing anyway. I like the idea though.
Edit: also, which version of PO would we use? B2W2 or BW?

B2W2 would be appropriate.
It'd also be a good way to usher everyone into the new metagame. Not that it's -that- altered. Well okay I guess STEALTH ROCKS ERYWHERE AGAIN. |
