Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon Playthrough Thread

It's that time of year again, for people of UPN to brag about their USUM adventures. Please be mindful and keep your plot spoilers in spoiler tags, some of us don't get to play it until christmas.

Before I detail my team, gonna talk plot, so yeah, here there be spoilers;

Spoiler: show
Yeah, they ramped up the difficulty here and there. First off, the Trainers' School teacher, instead of packing Magnemite and Alolan Meowth, now specifically has the Alola starter that screws yours over. And since the earliest available member of my planned team didn't come until Route 2... yeah, this meant I had to beat a Rowlet with a Popplio that hadn't yet learned Icy Wind. Fortunately, Leafage is physical, and Popplio gets Baby-Doll Eyes. Very underrated move for the Popplio line, IMO- basically priority Growl for something slow that could use a bit of extra physical bulk. I only recently got rid of the move on Primarina.

And the Totems! Oh, man! Gumshoos was no harder than average- then again, I had Brick Break Crabrawler by that point, so yeah. Araquanid, though! I mean, Totem Wishiwashi I remember being a challenge back in Moon, but then I was going up against it with just Rockruff and Torracat, so yeah. But Araquanid is just- I mean, thank Arceus Bubble is its Water move. Can you imagine it with Bubble Beam? STAB Bubble Beam? With Water Bubble? In the rain? I had to spam Baby-Doll Eyes and Icy Wind with Brionne to wear it down to the point where I could actually outspeed it, and not worry about that Leech Life healing off the damage while destroying my team. Oh, and Noibat users beware- I opened the battle with my Noibat. Araquanid opened the battle with freaking Aurora Beam. It saw me coming a mile away. And Marowak took two tries- I swear that thing must be packing a Thick Club or something. Lurantis actually wasn't too bad- Crabrawler went for Power-Up Punch, then KO'd with Brick Break-turned-All-Out Pummeling. And it called in Kecleon rather than Comfey, so I only had Kecleon to deal with.

Totem Togedemaru, though! The Miltank of Death in Pikaclone form! I don't know if it's just me, though, seeing as my only Ground move is Crabrawler's Bulldoze, and that thing's packing Bounce, but I had to spam Revives, Super Potions, and Roto Boosts like crazy! Mimikyu wasn't nearly as bad, though this had a lot to do with Primarina dodging Play Roughs thanks to his high affection.

OK, so, the team right now is as follows- I just got to Poni Island.

Houndoom@Firium Z, male, lv. 51 (Dusk Ball)
Hardy nature
Early Bird
~Flamethrower
~Snarl
~Sludge Bomb

So here's where I'm at:
Second Island, before the big battle. Purposefully vague here in case some might consider it a spoiler. Pokémon are in mid to late twenties. Here's the thing though. I had bred Pokémon beforehand on Sun and Moon, so I had a small menagerie of choices to bring over and play. However I was informed Pokébank wouldn't be working the first few weeks so I went "never mind" and played without them. Now I'm told Pokébank works for USUM and I'm seriously debating restarting the game with some Pokémon brought over from Sun and Moon. I think I'm going to do it. I mean I'm not that far into the game anyway.

Party currently in rotation:

Rockruff, female, Lv.24 (Cherish Ball)
Jolly
Own Tempo
-Rock Tomb
-Bite
-Thunder Fang
-Happy Hour
(yeah, gave up on this girl when I realised I had to get up at 4 AM to evolve it.)

Brionne, male, Lv.27
Naive
Torrent
-Icy Wind
-Bubble Beam
-Aqua Jet
-Disarming Voice
(Chose this starter because it was the only one I hadn't tried yet.)

Charjabug, male, Lv.27
Bold
Battery
-Acrobatics
-Bug Bite
-Spark
-Crunch
(Never used Vikavolt, heard it was amazing though (and easier to get now).

Vullaby, female, Lv.26
Modest
Big Pecks
-Roost
-Feint Attack
-Hidden Power (Ice)
-Pluck
(Also never used Mandibuzz before even though they've sometimes given me some trouble.)

Tauros, male, Lv.26
Docile
Anger Point (a bit contrary to a Docile nature don't you think?)
-Rest
-Sleep Talk
-Horn Attack
-Payback
(Never used one before. Honestly this one was more a placement filler until I got something else.)

Mudbray, male, Lv.27
Lax
Stamina
-Rock Tomb
-Stomp
-High Horsepower
-Double Kick
(Because I didn't get to last time. And Musdale gave me some problems when facing it. Courtesy of Stamina, a mostly physical team and Full Restores.)

Bewear, male, Lv.27
Lonely
Fluffy
-Rock Tomb
-Brick Break
-Brutal Swing
-Flail
(Didn't like it at first but after it gave me some trouble in combat I'm eager to try it and it's unique ability.)

Steenee, female, Lv.25
Quirky
Oblivious
-Rapid Spin
-Razor Leaf
-Teeter Dance
-Magical Leaf
(Why not? A Grass type might have been handy I thought?)

Remoraid, male, Lv.17
Careful
Hustle
-Water Gun
-Lock-On
-Psybeam
-Aurora Beam
(Only just got this guy because Octillery looks interesting but I've never used one before.)

Saturday Akala Island Scan gives Marshtomp. Level 36 Swampert with bulldoze absolutely trashes Totem Toge, like, got through the fight unscathed trashes it.

Ultra Necrozma battle theme is probably the best Pokemon music since Cynthia's battle theme. Discuss.

Is anyone else getting homestuck vibes from that or am I just crazy?

The synth tones, echoes, and especially the organ. Plus the simple but strong melody.

Sorry I put my post and slightly edited that name out of Jeri's post. I thought I'd be OK since a few people already mentioned totem bosses and that Pokemon was spoiled in a video before the game came out. Either way, sorry about that. D:

So I restarted my game to do an Egglocke (keeping my popplio starter though cause I got a girl without even having to reset~). All I need now are volunteers to supply the Eggs. If you can just supply them yourself, great! If you want me to supply mons to breed from, I can do that too, as I have an assortment of 24 randomly selected Pokémon and 6 personal picks lined up for that. Ping me on the discord server if you want to volunteer.

I got this on release day, but baby squid game demanded me to not play. I'm in the first few bits of the game and (early game spoilers)
Spoiler: show
it's just like Sun/Moon. There's a few differences, but for the most part, it's exactly the same. If that's the case, what is the point of this game? I'm hoping there's some major upgrade that'll make me feel like I didn't waste $40 on this.

For the most part, I'm just disappointed that it's not a direct sequel, because I was actually interested in the first game's story, and what happens after that. What about ponytail Lillie kicking ass?!

Also MC's face is still horrifying. Imagine how scary it is for your starter to be picked up and stared at by that soulless husk of a person.

The problem is, you're going in expecting B2/W2 when you should be expecting more like Emerald or Platinum. It's a third (and fourth) version, not a sequel. You'll see some definite differences, particularly later on, and you'll find that many parts of the game have the difficulty ramped up quite a bit, making for more of a challenge. but yes, overall, expect largely the same story with a few improvements here and there.

It's somewhere between Emerald / Platinum and BW2 imo. It's more transformative than other "3rd version" games.

If you haven't gotten to Akala yet, just be patient. That's where the more noticeable changes start to happen.

So I’ve done exactly what I said I’d do last time. I reset the game (after transferring some of the older pogeys like special Rockruff to Pokébank of course). I couldn’t decide which ones to use form the old game I had, so I decided to go for a rotational team of sorts and just went with 18. These have all been bred and EV-trained, so you could consider it slightly cheating. Between Exp.Share and boosted Exp. From being transferred Pokémon, they were easily up to level throughout most of the game without having to grind even once. I upheld a promise to myself that I’d use the lowest-levelled Pokémon on my team each time I’d visit a new place/Pokécentre and before facing a Trial Challenge.

Anyway, I’m now:
Spoiler: show
just before the League. All team mates are now at Lv.60. This was the only time when I decided to grind for exp. Since most were in their mid-late 50’s, I decided to even it out across the board and bring them all to Lv.60. I’m currently trying to decide which 6 to take with me for the challenge. I have no idea what the E4 is this time either, whether they kept the same or changed it up, so that'll be a nice surprise when I go in.

Spoilers on everything up to then:
Spoiler: show
So because I always used the lowest-levelled Pokémon for Totem trials, I didn’t always get to have the ones that were very usable. For instance, I didn’t have Musdale on my team when facing the Togemaru trial. I had to go through that one once, lose, reshuffle party order and try again before I managed to defeat it.
The toughest one was still Ribombee on which I somehow got myself in the position of having to use a couple dragons on my team as well as those with terrible speed stats (which does not pair well with Ribombee’s Quiver Dancing. Got a few hits in but after that Ribombee simply healed up with thanks to allies and then one-shot each one of my team mates before they could do anything. Eventually I reshuffled the party order again so I’d start with Alolan Marowak, whom has an abysmal speed stat that got OHKO’d by Ribombee if sent out too late in the battle. Also, he was the only one with a Rock-type move (Stone Edge). Strangely enough, spamming Stone Edge ensured Alolan Marowak was all I needed this time against the Quiver Dancing, Blissey-healed pest.
I had a similar problem with the first time I faced Ultimate(?) Necrozma. Had slow-moving ghosts such as Dhelmise and Palossand who were one-shot by it, a dragon who was 1-2-shot, Mimikyu who could only take one shot, as well as a few other useless. Reshuffled my team order and put Oranguru at the front, who could take one hit at the very least and who had just learned Trick Room. Naturally, my team’s low speed wasn’t a problem anymore.

Came across Necrozma on Mt. Lanakila
>Do you want to share your light with Necrozma?
“Hell no!”
And so I’m just leaving that poor creature there for now.

THIS. So much this! I hate the face they chose to plaster on the player character, and I really wished they had fixed that somewhat in USUM. One of the main reasons my character has sunglasses is to try and hide as much of that awful smiling face of his.

It is something I am confident or hopeful they will address in Pokémon Switch. Many people complained about it with Sun and Moon, but an even louder number are complaining about it with USUM now that we see that the problem was not adequately addressed.
