"Well, that's the last of them," one staffer remarks, looking out over the empty pen. His companion, a blonde girl, nods solemnly.

"Yep."

There is a beat of silence, as they consider this. An empty enclosure. No more Girafarig. The end of an era. New beginnings. So many emotions flood the pair. So many thoughts to consider. So many things happening at once. Who would go in next? Were the Girafarig happy in their new homes? Did their new trainers treat them well? Did they ever miss the staff at the Adoption Center?

So many creatures came through these doors that in due time the staff would forget individuals; it was inevitable. They might remember a few particularly difficult or interesting ones, but it was unreasonable to expect every single face which passed through these walls to be committed to memory. Somewhere, deep in their subconscious, the staff knew these Girafarig were just another group of ghosts, passing ephemerally through. Consciously, however, their presence was still fresh, weighing upon them like bags of sand or so many freshly fired clay bricks.

Where will you go from here?

"What now?" The girl asks, idly, tamping the ground with a rake.

"I guess we should scrape the enclosure," the young man replies, unlatching the gate.

The spend the afternoon clearing away the remnants of the Girafarigs time at the Center, though it doesn't really occur to them the hand they have in erasing their time here. When they're done, they hang the tools in a shed behind the barn, and get a cold bottle of water each from the fridge meant for volunteers.

Adoption of Lv. 01 (M) Girafarig confirmed.

Alice apologised profusely, but it wasn't her fault, and they all knew it. Had it happened since? Well, yes, and it was a nightmare, but that was what she had taken home and Alice would handle it.

The summer heat had returned, so it was flat sandals that tapped the floor this time, floral dress sweeping about pasty legs as the trainer made her way down the row. Alice had her blue eyes set on a fighting type this time: a female Machop, probably less popular than her male equivalent, but that didn't matter. Alice had always adored their line, and as Blaze had yet to evolve, there was a fighting-typed hole in her rotation that could do with filling.

"Hey, girl. I know I'm pretty small and I run like a weirdo, but I thought you could whip me into shape and I could love you, make you stronger and show you the world. Sound like a plan?" Alice had a Poke Ball and $30 waiting for her good acquaintances outside, so now she could only hope that the Pokemon thought her good enough to walk out the door with.

It seems you've picked a special one this time -- as you begin talking to the Machop, you find an audience gathering aroudn you, as staff members gather around to watch the exchange. An old lady clutches her apron with tears in her eyes. A teenage boy is clearly trying not to get choked up. A pair of preteen girls have written "NANI!" on printer paper with colorful markers. What the hell is going on?!

The Machop has a rag in her hand, and you realize she's helping with chores! She must be a real staple around this place. She looks up to you with wide eyes, apparently startled by the fact that you're nt only paying attention to her, but propositioning her. She looks away shyly, color rising in her cheeks, and tries to wave you off bashfully, but the crowd has begun chanting her name -- Nani! Nani! Nani!

She had been adopted once before, but came back to this place to give hope to all the others who hadn't found a home yet. Now they're watching from their cages, creates, and aquaria as people cheer for her to get a home?! Oh, it's all too much! You're an awfully pretty young girl, though! She loves your dress -- she loves flowers! So many people don't get that. They expect her to be fighting, fighting, fighting all the time! Fighting is cool, of course, but she isn't just a stereotype!

She reaches for the hem of your dress, to inspect the pattern. The crowd begins to coo. It really is such a lovely pattern -- you have such good taste! She sets her rag aside, and holds up one hand, urging you to wait there a moment. Then she trots away, and out the door, to the back where the outdoor enclosures are. The crowd goes silent. A hush fills the room. A few minutes later, she returns with a fistfu of flowers, which she sets on one of the countertops. With adept hands, she begins to weave them into a chain, which she hen loops into a necklace. Craning up on her tippy-toes, she puts it around your neck -- it looks so nice with your dress! She gives a nod; she wouldn't mind seeing what it would be like to see the world with a girl like you. The crowd erupts. A grown man is sobbing. The manager pushes through the dozen or so volunteers, face wet with tears and snot. It's not a very flattering look.

"You take good care of Nani!" The weeping manager croaks, invading your personal space. It would almost sound like a threat were Tate not woefully underwhelming. Then something seems to occur to everyone at the Center almost at the same time; a realization Tate puts into words. "Well... she might not be 'Nani' anymore."

The Machop nods, and nudges the overprotective manager away. She might not be Nani, but she'll always be beautiful! She offers you a hand to hold -- you two are friends now, right? She pulls you towards the front lobby, so you can fill out the paperwork; she knows how this place works like the back of her hand. You walk past weeping, cheering people as she does. It's weird, but is it the weirdest thing that's happened here?

Someone has to console Tate for most of the day, but it's a happy ending. ♥

Adoption of Lv. 01 (F) Machop confirmed.

After her visit to get Lilith she assumed she was done with the place, sure there were loads of Pokemon that still needed good homes --- but there were also a lot of people that were more than willing to give them just that. Elka herself already had quite a few Pokemon, and each was provided with as much love as she could muster. She knew that the next wouldn't be any different, how could she not love another living creature? Especially ones that were as cute and knowledgeable as Pokemon.

She walked through the double doors of the center, same old, nothing new. The staff had come to know her face, they always greeted her and Pascal kindly when they walked through the door. One of the employees seemed particularly fond of Pascal, often giving him treats as he walked through the door. He seemed particularly fond of the strongly smelling Pokebeans, which blasted Elka's senses uncomfortably. However, Pascal seemed to like them and that was all that mattered, right? Elka had told herself that today would be different, she was just coming in order to look at what Pokemon lined the various cages. She would check out any with her Pokedex that she wasn't sure of, but nothing more. That was what she said, and Pascal was to make sure of it.

However, that was until they got to the 'W' section of the cages and spotted her. She was enchanting, her very presence seemed calming as Elka and Pascal approached her cage. She let out a small 'Woo~' as Pascal sniffed at the foot of her cage, she seemed rather chipper as they eyed her. She was tranquil, peaceful, and even gave off the same vibes to Pascal and Elka.
> Woobat (F) - $30
Elka glanced at Pascal, he gave a brief nod --- he knew full well that his trainer had her sights set on the little creature and it was rather obvious that she wasn't going to back off and let her stay here. She summoned an employee from across the store, claiming that she would like the little creature. The employee nodded, more than familiar with the blue haired trainer at this point.

"Welcome to the team Laylee!" Exclaimed Elka, patting the fluffy fur surrounding the bat's body.

"Ee-vee!" Pascal echoed in response.

((I'd like to adopt this gal, putting her in a regular Pokeball and paying $30 to take her home. EDIT: Oh yeah! Calling it out now but her ability is Unaware))

You're becoming a familiar face in these parts. The manager recognizes you pretty well, peeking out from the office to make sure you're getting along okay in the occasionally cramped space of the back room where the spaces between the cages can get a bit tight. Perhaps a bit paranoid, the manager can only just imagine a crutch catching on a poorly placed cage and you going down, and then the lawsuits; there was already the incident with the Ekans a couple of weeks ago and this place just doesn't have the money to field that sort of thing...

But that doesn't happen today. Things go, as they more often than not do, quite uneventfully. You meet a cutie who captures your attention. It's a typical story for this place. With the help of a staffer, you get the cage open and the precious little ball of fuzz takes flight around your head, content to follow you to the front desk. There's a handsome young man staffing it this afternoon and he gives you a warm smile. He likes Woobat, he tells you. He grew up in the countryside, and they'd nest in the rafters of the old barn, seein' as no one used it. He's got that country twang to his voice that makes you imagine him tipping Miltank in the fields, but he seems too well-behaved for that nonsense. He gives the newly dubbed Laylee a pet as you fill out the papers which make her your own. While he waits for you to work your way through the documents, he tells you about how they'd take pieces of wood where the Woobat's had adhered themselves and left their heart-shaped impressions, and singed the marks on there for good with lighters, then given them to girls at school. It was the big thing to do around prom season, he tells you; some people even made good money selling them if they were good enough at cleaning up the wood and making plaques out of them.

When you're done, he offers you a hand to shake; a cordial country boy through and through. Then Tate sends him into the back to straighten the cages so no one trips back there.

Adoption of Lv. 01 (F) Woobat confirmed.

Just one more time. This would be the last time he would visit in a while.

...That's what Hyrem said the last time he visited the Adoption Center. He was too big of a sucker for Pokemon that had difficulty finding someone they could live with, however, so he stepped through once again. This time he found himself going to the greenhouse portion of the facility where lots of Grass Pokemon were found. Most of them recognized him once again as the trainer who adopted Joanna and shied away from him, but as he came to the heavier wooded area of the greenhouse he felt more humidity than usual. What tipped him off, however, was the sickly sweet smell mixed with the unmistakable scent of dead bugs. Nothing seemed below him, so he looked up...and he stumbled onto his butt just as a pair of massive jaws closed on nothing but air, the large eyes revealing this plant to not only be sentient but quite dangerous as well. "Didn't Keith have one of these?" Hyrem asked himself, unable to remember what the Pokemon was called, so he checked with Dexelle (like he does) to make sure:

Carnivine, the Bug Catcher Pokemon. Carnivine can float in the air, but it prefers to hang from a tree and keep its mouth open, waiting for the scent it gives off to lure prey into its mouth. Once something makes contact with its sticky mouth, it closes down quickly and traps its prey inside, either swallowing it whole if it feels room in its stomach or keeping it trapped in its mouth while it waits for room. Digestion takes approximately 24 hours, during which time Carnivine may open its mouth in case more food is lured in.

"Carnivine, that's what it's called!" he recalled. He looked up at the smiling carnivorous plant who stretched out its leafy arms and picked him up by his arms. "You do know who I am, right?" he asked.
"Vine!" it nodded.
"And the Girafarig I adopted?"
"Vine!" Another nod.
"And yet you'd be okay with me adopting you?"
"Carnivine!" came a third nod.
"This doesn't have anything to do with you wanting to eat my Girafarig despite her being immune to Grass attacks, does it?" This time it didn't nod as quickly. "Well, I'm still interested in you anyway," he continued. "If anything, you'd fit quite well with a lot of my Pokemon...yeah, let's go, Marcus!"
"Vine~" cheered the flytrap before wrapping his vines around his new trainer, hugging him all the way to the front desk where the paperwork would be filled out.

42. That's how many were left after all the residents were tallied at the end of the day. There had been over 150 when Tate had taken over the Adoption Center, but now there were only 42.

The Grass-type enclosure was still full; 13 Pokémon wandering around their verdant little section of the outdoor space. Over a fourth of the entire population! Tate had taken two home -- Pakalōlō and Makani -- but it hardly put a dent in the population. Fragile by nature, they didn't seem too popular among trainers, who opted for things more robust, or cuter, or otherwise more alluring than a dreary old Shroomish.

The Carnivine had been a fascinating fixture among the otherwise uninspiring lot; no one at the Center was surprised to see it go before its peers. It's a bittersweet sort of experience, when a Pokémon leaves; you're happy that they've found a home, but sad too that you'll likely never see them again. Certain staff each have their favorite tasks; Pokémon griups they prefer to work with and types they have stronger affiliations with. For those who had made it their duty to feed and tend to the needs of the Grass-types, it was particularly hard to come into work to find him gone. They'd put on big smiles and talk about how happy they were that he had a trainer, but you could sense the worry in their tones as they'd ask -- who adopted him? They just wanted wanted to be sure he'd be okay. Of course, it always eases the trepidation to hear a familiar name.

Hyrem? He's been here before, right?

Yeah, he adopted that Girafarig.

Oh, and a Carvahna!

Well... at least he won't be lonely...

They titter and talk. They worry, and wonder. They can't help it; they don't know you. They don't know what fate you have in store for their little friend. They're a little sad, and a lot of a happy, all at the same time. They've seen a lot of faces come and go through this place; over 100 of them.

Now there's just 42.

Adoption of Lv. 01 (M) Carnivine confirmed.

Even so, there had to be something left in the remains, the handful of Pokemon who had been left behind. Long she searched, the shelves seemingly devoid of inspiration for her, until she happened upon a lone enclosure, with naught but a small statue in there. A Baltoy. Hello there.

Liawe jumped at the sound. Or was it a thought? It wasn't hers, either way. Was it... Was it the Baltoy's?

Yes.

...A telepathic Baltoy. This was going to be all sorts of interesting. She quickly filled out the forms and passed the staff the necessary money, before offering the psychic dreidel her last Pokeball. She'd need to get more soon. Always needed more. As she left, she could feel the Baltoy humming a merry little tune in her head. She liked it.

Its bizarre to come into work, and have things talk to you inside of your head. It's bizarre to come into work, and take care of things that look an awful lot like you, but aren't like you. It's bizarre to come into work, and he haunted by ghosts.

The Adoption Center is a bizarre place to work.

Another empty enclosure to clean. The inorganic Pokémon don't make as much of a mess, so it isn't so much work; Tate does it mid-morning, a bit before lunch, while listening to music on the PokéGear. It blares through earbud headphones -- a song about an old-time luchador with a Tauros gimmick. Tate sings aloud while hosing out the space.

Rise, rise... surrounded by friends. ♫ ♪

That's what they did here, wasn't it? They brought people and Pokémon together. They introduced friends to one another. Facilitated new bonds. Helped provide a home to those who had none until such time as they could find that which they lacked. The next track was melancholy, and described love and loss, through the thin veneer of a [b]hair match. Tate wondered if Hawlucha ever had feather matches? Water ricocheted off of the fencing and splashed back onto the trainer, soaking the colorful shirt for which Tate was known. Good thing the PokéGear was waterproof.

Loss. Every Pokémon that left this place was missed, if even just for a little while. Love. Were they loved? Tate hoped so. Tate chose to believe so. There was too much awfulness in the world to dwell on the idea that anything less than good came out of this place that the Johto native had devoted so much time and energy to. The album loops back to the first track. It's very wistful. Tate felt wistful. Tate pushed these thoughts aside, and turned off the hose.

Time for lunch.

Adoption of Lv. 01 (-) Baltoy confirmed.

Keith tried (and failed horribly) to stifle a huge yawn as he walked into the Adoption Center. He felt every bit as tired as he looked, and it was with no small amount of concern that Meowth looked at him. And why not? After all, Meowth was there last night. He heard Keith start to scream in his sleep- the recent adventures in Goldenridge City had brought back an old recurring nightmare of his. Namely, the walls of twisted Koffing and Weezing corpses from Mt. Aduro. The sight of such a thing in his dreams was enough to make him wake up screaming. And last night was the worst Meowth had seen- Keith had gotten less sleep than the average Vigoroth.

"Ya sure ya oughta be comin' in here if yer dat tired?" Meowth asked Keith. "Perhaps dis could wait a while until yer more wide awake?"

"Meowth's got a point," added the Dusknoir floating alongside Keith, the feminine voice making it evident that this was Liliana as opposed to Peeves. "There must be a way to ensure you get a good night's sleep... Maybe if Meowth tried eating your dreams?"

"Hey, Lil, I like yer tinkin' dere, but dere ain't no way I's eatin' nightmares," Meowth stated. "You read Hermione's notes on da subject matter o' dreams affectin' da taste- nightmares barely qualify as edible. I'd be pukin' my guts out all night-"

Allow me, a serene voice sounded, interrupting Meowth. Before any of them could ask where the voice came from, an answer came floating over to them. A round, pink creature with something of a floral pattern all over its body. Moved by curiosity, Keith dug out his Pokédex and pointed it at this newcomer.

"Munna, the Dream Eater Pokémon. A Psychic-type," said Keith's Pokédex. "Munna eats the dreams of people and Pokémon, and while it has no problems consuming nightmares, only pleasant dreams enable it to produce Dream Mist. Those whose dreams were consumed by Munna forget what the dream was about."

"So you're a Munna," Keith murmured. "I- whoa, whoa, whoa!" he exclaimed, for the next thing he knew, every flower on Munna's body was glowing a pale blue, and Keith was being suspended in midair courtesy of a Psywave attack. Munna set him down in a nearby chair, then floated just behind Keith's head, inviting him to use her as a pillow. Keith was rather surprised by all this, to say nothing of how Meowth and Liliana felt about this, but a small puff of pink mist was sprayed out of the dark pink oval between Munna's eyes. Keith took a whiff of the Dream Mist, and suddenly found it quite impossible to keep his eyes open.

"...Wat da hell are ya doin'?" Meowth asked the Munna as he watched Keith snoozing in the middle of the Adoption Center, for now, the Psychic-type who was allowing Keith to use her as a pillow seemed to be feeding on an unidentified vapor of some sort being drawn from Keith's ear.

Consuming his nightmare, the Munna responded.

"...Don't dat taste gross?" asked Meowth, sounding slightly nauseated.

Not to me, Munna replied. All dreams have their own unique flavor to them, though we Munna are gifted with the ability to stomach the nightmares most others find nauseating. It's a gift. One I personally like to use to help others. As we speak, your Trainer is being relieved of the burdensome nightmare that would elseways be causing him distress.

"Fascinating," Liliana murmured, watching the Munna at work.

Hours later, Keith's eyes slowly opened. He stood up, a small grin forming on his face as he registered just what a difference had been made- in stark contrast to the tired and weary man who'd walked in earlier, Keith felt relaxed and refreshed. "...Wow!" he grinned. "I feel great."

I am glad, smiled Munna, who floated out from behind Keith. Your nightmare was an intense one indeed. Many strong flavors mixed together, with an overall spiciness that somehow brings it all together. I considered it a pleasure to relieve you of that burden.

"Well, I owe you big time for that," nodded Keith. "So what's the deal, Munna, do you work here or something?"

I'm afraid not, Munna admitted. I'm actually up for adoption. I've been here for quite some time. A definite tinge of sadness in her telepathic tone of voice as she said this.

"Have you, now?" Keith murmured. Meowth didn't even need to look at Keith to see that gleam in his eye. "Munna... how would you like to come with us?" he asked.

Munna looked at Keith. You mean it? she asked, sounding hopeful. I... I would quite like that, she nodded.

Keith smiled. "I mean it," he confirmed. "Not even taking into account the whole eating-nightmares deal, you're just really nice."

Munna blushed. Thank you, she responded. Umm... might I request a specific nickname? she added. I actually have one in mind.

Keith shrugged. "I don't see why not," he replied. "Let's hear it."

Well... began Munna. The story that was always told to me is that we Munna have ancestry not only in common with Drowzee and Hypno, but also that could be traced back to the legendary Cresselia, a Psychic-type with the power to dispel nightmares. I for one always took this distinction quite seriously, and always made it my goal to rid the world of nightmares like the great Cresselia herself. And in that spirit... I would like to be named Selia. If it's OK with you, of course, she added to Keith.

"Wow," Keith murmured, taking in the Munna's story.

"I wonder if there's any truth to that," Liliana added, sounding highly fascinated. "I've never heard any legends or stories about Munna being descended from Cresselia, but considering that they and they alone seem to enjoy the taste of nightmares, I suppose it's possible that they developed their taste buds in such a way to be able to safely relieve others of nightmares..."

As the Dusknoir went on in this vein, Keith turned back to the Munna. "I think Selia's a good name for you," he nodded. "Welcome to the team," he added, holding up a Poké Ball. Selia said nothing in response, merely smiling and floating forward, gently bumping into the sphere, which split open to suck her inside. THUD THUD THUD
Once again Kawaii entetred the adoption center with mutiple pokemon in mind, suddenly a sound echoed in the back of her mind.
THUD THUD THUD
It started out small and barely irritating. It grew in volume as the pinkette reached the psychic types.
THUD THUD THUD
As it grew louder Kawaii realized something, it was in her head. Not out loud. As she moved further into the shops it began to make her head throb like it was going to explode.
THUD THUD THUD
The female trainer clutcher her head and looked around wildly as the preassure grew. Suddenly her eyes landed on a pig-like pokemon bouncing in his tiny cage. It's head hitting the top causing the psychic panic. For, ontop of his head rested a beautiful pink orb. Kawaii imeadiatly unlocked the cage and the spoink hopped free and smiled at her. All at once the pinkette knew who she would choose.

It was a hot day in Fizzytopia, and Alice Hope had traveled from her Cloud Garden home for a few errands only: buy snacks she didn't need, and pick up yet another friend from the Adoption Centre. She had a feeling that this potential new squad member would enjoy this kind of weather, but it was the type of weather that had her in an airy pink cropped top and tiny shorts and sandals. Because no.

Swish swish, Alice's blonde ponytail swung with every step towards the grass enclosure, where one Pokemon stood out to her. When she had visited after the place's grand reopening, everywhere had been crammed full of Pokemon, and now a small amount remained. It made her sad that Bellsprout was one of them, and even sadder that she had expected it. $30 in her pocket and a Poke Ball had this creature's name on it.

"Hey, little guy." The young woman cooed. She crouched down, although she didn't actually reach five feet tall anyway. It was an odd looking thing, objectively, but Alice thought it was charming-- and Weepinbell had always been one of her favourite Pokemon. "I'm sorry that you've been stuck here so long. I hope it didn't upset you to see me leaving with some of your friends. But I'd love for it to be your turn now, if you want to." Alice offered. She had purposely picked a more floral perfume, hoping it might put him at ease, "We can choose some snacks on the way home! What d'you think?"

Over multiple visits, there was always another Pokemon that was higher priority, always something else that was more interesting than what Hyrem was here for today. Partially, this was because he had owned others of its kind before and had to give them up to have room in his PC for other Pokemon, but this again went back to him putting higher priority on everything other than the creature he sat in front of at this very moment.

No longer.

It took a while for her to notice the human sitting next to her as she was busy grazing the pasture next to the facility, once home to three Girafarig and a pair of Mareep she was able to visit with often. All of them were very friendly, even the Girafarig sequestered away from the others for her taste in Grass Pokemon (which she could relate to, to some extent), but one day she entered the field of grass and noticed it was completely empty. Yes, it would be where she would reside as opposed to a cramped cage, but she would wander around and watch as trainers took other Pokemon instead of her, leaving her completely alone.

No longer.

As the Numel grazed, her eyes closed as she could do so without thinking about anything, her front teeth came in contact with something completely different from the blades of grass she was used to. She gave the mysterious object a tug, pulling it further into her mouth, but it wasn't being ripped out of the earth like normal. Her tongue started to explore and found there was grass contained inside the object, but as she separated the grass from the object she found that it moved and wiggled, reacting to her tongue. Finally, she opened her eyes and saw that it was attached to something, and she simply stared, wondering for a while just what the object in her mouth was attached to.

No longer.

As Hyrem sees the Numel look up, his hand still in her mouth, her dopey expression helped him remember why he was so drawn to the Pokemon in the first place years ago, when he had hatched quite a few of them in a row. This one seemed to be more forlorn than any Numel he had owned, likely from spending months in the Adoption Center and being passed over multiple times as he wasn't the only one who had experienced hatching more than one of these camels from the old Egg House and gave each one of them away, either to other trainers or the very Adoption Center he found himself in; that he knew for certain.

No longer.

As soon as she saw the human's face, she recognized him as one of the trainers who took one of her Girafarig friends. She then felt the touch of his other hand as it rubbed her neck, a place that was perhaps the most difficult for Numel to scratch whenever it itched. Not only did she recognize the shape of his hand to be the object she was allowed to suckle on with her mouth--such intimate interaction was something no other human had given her, and this alone made her daring enough to guess the young man's intentions--but the expression on his face seemed to belie some sort of regret, likely from deciding to give up on raising others of her species, as she had seen with pictures of many of her kin residing here in the past.

No longer.

Both of them could see in the other a second chance, a bond broken with others but could be made anew with each other. As Hyrem slowly took his hand out of her mouth, leaving the grass inside for her to eat, he placed it on the other side of her neck, both hands now rubbing the top of it. "What do you say?" he finally asked in a whisper. "Want to try again...Pelea?" He had to wait for what seemed like hours for her response, continuing to stare into her eyes while she finished swallowing the grass he had given her.

No longer.

She rears up before her feet come down on his shoulders, her body weight knocking him down and causing him to laugh with the air knocked out of him as he soon found the Numel on top of him, her delighted face up close to his. As the hump on her back let off some steam, she sat on his chest, knowing somehow that he was okay with it, before resting her head on his shoulder and sighing in relief, thinking about the name he had given her. ...Pelea. It just seemed right. His hands again started to rub her neck and back as he felt a closeness in this Pokemon that he didn't with other Numel. Perhaps that was truly why he desired this one when he had left behind so many others before her. Perhaps he was merely looking for the right one to keep with him...

No longer.

It wobbled a little in Keith's hand, but fell still with little trouble. Smiling at the ball containing his new Munna, Keith headed on over to pay for the newest member of the team.

A man asleep in the middle of the back room. It was strange, but not the strangest thing the staff had seen. They argued over who had left the chair there. Was it Arturo, while he was feeding the Starly? Had it Mikhaela, using it as a step stool to get a fresh roll of paper towels out of the tall cabinets? Whatever the case, one of the nice office chars had been left among the cages and now there was a patron asleep in it. His Pokémon loitered around him, and the staff did their best to work without disturbing him, for it seemed rude to wake him, even if he was impeding their work. Around lunch, an older volunteer with graying hair offered treats to the Dusknoir and Meowth who waited, bored and patient, for their master to arise. Sometime in the afternoon, Tate placed a blanket over him, which he promptly kicked off, offended the manager to an irrational degree; the flamboyantly dressed Johto native huffed back to the office complaining about ungrateful people and how, "I didn't want to share my blanket anyway!"

By 2 o'clock, a betting pool had surfaced on how long the strange man would stay asleep. Until dinner? Until they closed? Forever? Volunteers and interns tossed their petty change into a mason jar in a winner-take-all gamble. loose dollars and all sorts of coins threatened to crest the mouth by the end of the day. The winner? Mikhaela. The bet? "Until he wakes up."

She totally left the chair there.

A dented cage.

Tate would have to take it out back with the rubber mallet and hammer it out. Who had put the Spoink indoors, the manager wondered? This was decidedly against protocol. Music blared through headphones connected to the PokéGear hanging from the lanyard around the manager's neck as the weary worker pulled the heavy, stainless steel cage from the rack with a starp yank. A few latches allowed it to collapse, and then Tate carried it through the back hall and out the back door, into the fields where the outdoor enclosure and barn stood, among other things. Bringing it to the toolshed, Tate dropped it on the grass and unlocked the door to the storage building. Retrieving the rubber mallet off of an aluminum shelf, the Johto native held the handle between exposed teeth, lips pulled back, so as to free up both hands in order to drag out a hefty saw horse.

With all the necessary items on hand -- and the mallet removed from mouth -- Tate got to work. Several more latches disassembled the cage, and Tate laid the dented roof across the saw horse. Holding it in place with one hand, and careful not to smash a thumb, Tate began beating the dent out to the best of personal ability. To the west, the sun was setting. Over the clatter of rubber on metal, the music still played. How long had the Spoink been inside? A day? Two? It had likely gotten brought in for a check-up and put inside the kennels afterwards by mistake. Spoink rely on the shock of their bouncing to keep their heart beating adequately, and can otherwise fall into arrhythmia, occasionally critically. For this reason, the IAPC advises against restricting their movement. Tate felt sick with each thwack of the mallet. The music kept playing.

I don't want to die in here. ♪♫

It's hot out, and the staff have set up a sprinkler in the Grass-type enclosure in order to help alleviate their demand for water. There is a cool mist in the air as you approach, and when the sun catches it just right, a rainbow sheen reflects off of the water droplets. A small tribe of Shroomish run away from the fence as you approach, but that's fine; they aren't who you're here for. Rather, your sites are set on a certain someone rooted by the gate, its feet buried in the sod in an attempt to soak up extra moisture. He looks a bit spooked by you, but he can't uproot himself up quick enough to flee before you enter, and has no choice but to hear what you have to say.

You'd... like to adopt him?

That's an awfully big commitment. He doesn't even know you! Here you are, waltzing up like you own the place, talking about adoption! Buy a guy dinner first! Oh... there might be snacks involved? Well... hm. Snacks do sound nice. What kind of snacks? These are very important questions.

You watch him go through this roller coaster of thoughts, one leaf raised to his chin in contemplation. Then he looks out to the enclosure around him. You're a very forward girl, but it's better than staying here. After all, there's snacks. He uproots himself, and takes several moments to very carefully shake every last bit of dirt from his tendril-like feet, before he begins to climb you like a mountain! When he reaches your head, he curls his flexible, vine-like body around your ponytail, and nestles in, his leaves and head making for quite the pretty fixture. Yes, he really brings your outfit together. He hopes you don't mind his forwardness! Better go get that paperwork signed.

There were more and more of these, lately. They could stand to start bringing some of the indoor Pokémon outside to run loose now that they didn't need the space for other, larger Pokémon. It was a good thing, knowing the vast majority of Pokémon had gone to good homes... wasn't it?

Of course, it was a selfish feeling. It was the goal of the Adoption Center to ensure every creature found a home, a trainer, someone to love and be loved by. And genuinely, Tate was happy for all of them; each and every one. But looking out over the empty cages and barren enclosures, there was a hollowness inside of the Johto native's heart. Each and every creature had been someone Tate had loved, if even for a moment. While slicing berries for a meal. While performing triage on an injury. While taking weights. While grooming. The work could be hard and grueling and there was no end of complaints from the sourpuss, but in the depths of the manager's heart, this was where Tate loved to be, and these Pokémon were who Tate loved and felt safe around. To see them leave left a void. What would happen when they were all gone? What would become of Tate?

Rake in hand, Tate kept blue eyes downcast as the gate swung open. One more empty enclosure to rake out. Tate had watched through the window of the office as the trainer had selected the Numel who had lived her. They had looked so happy. They'd be a beautiful pair, Tate knew; truly meant for one another. A sad, wry smile crossed the manager's features.

What happens to Tate, when they all go away? It was worth finding out.

Adoption of Lv. 01 (F) Numel confirmed.
