This is a ho-ho-hold up: Steam Winter Sale 2012
https://store.steampowered.com Probably not as thread worthy as last year, due to not having a shitty achievement metagame where you randomly earn virtual coal and -33% off coupons for Bad Rats that you desperately try to pawn off on someone with a DotA 2 beta key like a junkie looking for his next hit. On the other hand that shit was stupid and horrifically exploited anyways so fuck that noise. Also this is probably common knowledge by now, but don't buy in on anything that's not a daily/community's choice deal unless one of the following is true: 1. It's the last day of the sale 2. You must absolutely positively play World of Goo RIGHT NOW RIGHT GODDAMN NOW 3. You hate money Feel free to complain about the latest daily deals or why any fuckwit would vote for Limbo over Braid as the next Community's Choice deal or something.

I have heard nothing but amazing things about FTL. I've been thinking about getting it myself. I'd say go for it.
Anyway, sales this year so far haven't been as stellar as I'd imagined, but that's to be expected I suppose. My backlog is already HUGE, and I don't know how much more I want to expand it. I expect to maybe get one or two games at most this time around. Darksiders II for $13 is REALLY tempting, but... I don't know. Need to beat the first game first still. I need to be more responsible this time around. So unless something really eye catching or stellar pops out, I'm gonna hold off. |

Beat the first, second didn't hold my interest very long even after buying it at $60 week of release: fiddling with vendor trash every two minutes was not really the advance I wanted made in my Zeldalikes.

Rainbow Six: Vegas games are $2.50 each, Future Soldier is $14.99
Y/N? I played the demo for RS back when it came out and enjoyed it at the time and I liked Advanced Warfighter 2 well enough (for a bit) |

Rainbow Six games are quite good. Very well balanced cover system and realistic combat. In fact, Realism mode says you die after one bullet (for the most part). Allies you command aren't shit retarded either and the commands you can give still give you a lot of control over the battlefield. My favorite thing to do was order my troops to enter through one day and barge in myself from another to flank a few seconds later.
And for $5 for the two games, it's quite the deal, even if it is quite old now. |

Dragon Age: Origins Ultimate Edition for Ł5 (that's the original game, Awakening and all DLC packs). Score.
Also bought an interesting looking game called Lone Survivor for Ł2.30.

DAO - Good/decent game.
Awakening - Bad Expansion (lots of glitches, dumb story, character interactions are considerably weaker- which are the strengths of Bioware RPGs) DLCs - Ranging from Good to total ass. I loved DAO, but wow did those DLCs feels cheaply made, stupidly written, and generally not important to the plot. Leliana's Song is hit or miss mostly based on how much or how little you cared about her during main game. Saw Warhammer 40k Dawn of War full package for $10. Really considering it since it's like 4 or 5 games in that pack. |

My second family are all Steam crazy so I haven't had to buy a thing. Everyone always buys a 4 pack when they want something and I'm fortunate enough to be the only 4th option for 3 different people.
I really enjoy XCOM: Enemy Unknown right now. I want FTL so I've been watching for it. |

So this sale has been pretty much the worst Steam sale ever.

I think there are some mitigating factors to be fair:
1. This isn't our first time at the rodeo, so you get used to certain games always showing up as daily deals (e.g. Just Cause 2) and so they aren't exciting anymore 2. You realize that "OMG OMG %75 PERCENT OFF BUMBLE FUCK'S EXTREME FUCK BUMBLING", while cheap, still doesn't mean jack shit if it sits in your steam playlist unloved and uninstalled, so you are less prone to dropping 20 bucks on random shit you'll never play just because they're $2.50 each Not to say that there haven't been derpy sales (66% OFF GOTY I AM ALIVE OH BOY OH BOY), and that a lot of the really good games that came out this year (e.g. XCOM) haven't been out long enough to get discounted very deeply yet. Oh yeah, Fallen Enchantress is 50% off for another hour or so: having played a couple games it's a good Civ-like if you were interested in Warlock: Master of the Arcane but wanted a more meaty Civ-style experience.

A little light in the darkness as well -
Amazon has been doing very well on the sales this year competing with Steam. Right now, Spec Ops: The Line is on sale for $7.49, and was Zero Punctuation's GOTY. The gameplay isn't anything new or interesting, but if you like stories, this game has one fucking hell of a story, and at that price I HIGHLY recommend it, especially at that price. And yes, it does activate on Steam. |

Yeah, I have to agree with Reed here. We've all had Steam for years now and the list of games we don't own and are waiting to go on sale gets shorter and shorter. Add in the fact that only a few titles come out each year which are OMGWTFMUSTBUY. Also, how many of you guys really sit down and game that much anymore?

For me (and I would imagine a lot of us) it feels like end-of-gen ennui more than anything else: I went through most of 2012 kind of not giving a shit about games (and being disappointed by a lot of the early 2012 games that came out, such as ME3 and Diablo), and then XCOM/Borderlands 2 came out and I put in over 150 hours combined between the two of them and still see myself going back to both of them for more. It's hard to care too much about the Steam sales if all the AAA games going on sale struggle to trigger anything more than apathy: other sites have had better deals than Steam, like Amazon and GMG, but I find myself struggling to give a shit about those too.

I think Gaben heard me.
Sleeping Dogs on sale for only $4.49, almost definitely a pricing error, but people are buying it right now at this price for no problem. Hurry and pick this up while you can, it's a fantastic game if you're into open world or GTA type stuff. It was originally going to be True Crime: Hong Kong. Also, I still game a bunch. Besides playing music and hanging out with friends on the weekends and working during the day, the only other thing I really do is game.
