I want to get a job so I can have money, mum and dad are also unemployed at the moment after dad got pretty much bullied out of his last job and mum's been a housewife for the last 10 or so years and yeah, we only have money from dad's old work paying him for 6 weeks of work or something to help him out and it is just all a bit messy at the moment in my household, jobs-wise.

Anyone want to teach me Scottish politics in the next 24 hours? Pretty sexy job going that would require actually knowing something :/

So I'm busy filling out an application to my local Dunkin Donuts(which thankfully is hiring) and again I am stopped by the abomination that is references. ARRGGGHH. I don't know enough people. ;;

Location doesn't matter. If you're willing to do it and so are they, you could put people you trust here down as personal references. They can't lie for you, but they can at least vouch for your character and give the usual compliments ("hard worker", "honest", etc). Obviously this requires them to provide you with their legal name and some form of immediate contact information (usually telephone number), but still. Worth a shot if you have any friends here who you think would trust you with their private information and would give you a good recommendation.

We had a Mock Interview a few weeks ago and I just filed the paperwork describing how it happened. The lady who IV'd me gave me a lot of compliments, but my answer to the question "Do you think this employer would hire you?" was simply "I have no idea, she'd have to hire me for me to be 100% sure".
Because, I've had so many IVs in the past go well, but I not even be considered for the position. I can read a room, but I can't really read how well an IV went without the ultimate outcome.

I could do that. I think I can think of one person that might agree to it.

Ah, I was plagued too by the references problem back when I was looking for jobs. However I was able to dodge it as I never filled job forms, and on my CV I would simply write "references given upon request" (or something like that) and... out of all the applications and interviews I went through, I was never asked to give references ^^; Nowdays I still go through interviews time to time (not for a new job mind you, but for a new position/promotion within the company I currently work for) and they do ask for references, but it's more along the lines of "oh yeah, speak to *insert coworkers of equal or higher position here*, they know how well I work!" and there you go X)
> Edit/Dopple: Yeah I know the feeling. Personally I went through all pretty good/ok interviews, but not all ended up getting the position/demand of filling it. My most disheartened situation is when I got through an interview for a becoming an intern as a web developper: it went extremely well, sure to have my internship there in my pocket, only to not getting any news from them since the interview. So I was talking on the phone to the guy running the parliamentary office I'm trying to get a job in and we inadvertently started bitching about our previous employers. Lots of laughs were had but I feel this was probably a mistake!

Huh. I have a job interview for a senior level policy job. I feel there may be a mistake. I'm wildly underqualified
Oh well! |

My favorite is "2+ Years of experience preferred" for what should be an entry level position.
Like... when the fuck was the last time you worked at a job for more than 2 years and didn't want to blow your brains out? |

As far as I can tell, those things are just to get the best person ever and trick people who are not determined enough to get the job. Even if in the description they say 2 years of experience and you have none, you still have a chance to get it.

Often that's true. See also: needing a degree for fairly simple jobs.

I wish my parents understood this. I've been trying for a job for almost a year now and they don't believe I have been looking.

Gonna clock into this thread, since it seems rather helpful. As far as Panama is concerned (Thought many of you may not care at all), our hotel industry is currently booming and is filled with business opportunities. Sadly, we're plagued by the issue that we currently have very, VERY little qualified personnel actually manning jobs at these aforementioned hotels. This basically means that, as long as you're smart, speak English and Spanish, and have good references from your Internship Programs, you're golden. You'd be surprised with the kind of thing you can score if you speak both, Spanish and English perfectly. That, and having actual field experience, can net you a very good place in any of the up-and-coming hotel franchises currently opening over here. If you enjoy being oppressed, like I do, this means money, and stable jobs for a good while.
