Jirachi Jirachi's Casino

In the heart of Fizzytopia exists a grandiose building with a single purpose - to place your bets and make it big. Or at least, that was its purpose in the past. Abandoned and defunct, Jirachi's Casino laid in waste for years, with some of its services having been shut down even long before that. But with the recent raid of its vaults having brought the magnificent casino back into the public eye, a generous but anonymous benefactor has paid to bring the building back to its former glory. Dusted up and cleaned, Jirachi's Casino once more opens its doors to the public.

Casino Attractions:

Gambling Machines - Consisting of Starter Slots and Roulette, the main floor is filled to brim with a variety of ways to spend your time. Bets here are low but payouts are somewhat consistent, so anyone can make it big with enough time.

Lotteries - Just off the main floor, a large foyer with a multitude of tables sells small time lottery tickets, with comfortable seating to watch as the numbers pile up on the Jackpot Board for those wishing to try their hand at guessing the lucky numbers on a weekly or monthly basis.

Race Tracks - These tracks used to hold regular Canine and Rapidash races, but the Casino owned racers were long since sold off. Now, comers and goers are expected to put forward their own Pokemon to race should they so choose. The Rapidash track is kept well maintained, while the Canine Dash has been allowed to keep a fair amount of the debris it has accumulated over time as obstacles for racers to overcome.

Arcade - For those seeking fun without any real risk, arcade machines have been relegated from storage. From shooters to dance games, tests of strength to Pokemon guessing games, if you can dream it you can play it here.

As the vaults of Jirachi's Casino are currently empty, the coins given out by machines and games as prizes are purely for RP purposes at this time. In accordance with gambling laws, these coins cannot be transferred into actual funds in order to allow minors equal access to the fun and games inside!

Legal Clause:
Gambling may sometimes be considered detrimental to one's health and Jirachi's Casino management takes no responsibility for future addictive behaviour.

Gamblers Anonymous can be found down the hall, four doors to the right.

While she enjoyed a more traditional experience from the eastern regions earlier in the day, this was something she was much more used to. The fancy galas were held at the year's end, where those at the top would come together in their designer formal clothes to drink and gamble. Golds were everywhere, the place shimmering as the delayed new year's celebration was about to begin. She, of course, as a former celebrity needed to dress her best. She had managed to find one of her old dresses in her luggage, that wasn't her wedding dress of course. She knew better than to store those precious mementos where anyone could get to them.

And so, Star sat at one of the tables sipping on a fine vintage Champagne. Clair stood attentively at her side, waiting in case anyone approached her trainer. This was certainly something that could've come straight out of her memory for sure. Yet, instead of her husband... she had a cat named after their miscarried daughter. There was an ironic pain to it, but a comforting warmth nonetheless.

"Excuse me, waiter, could we have a Shrimp Cocktail?" the Meowstic mentally shouted out to the closest waiter.

The man looked at the woman confused, before looking down at the psychic cat. Clair then looked up at her, and Star made a few motions with her hands. Sign language was another thing she had picked up since it was something useful to teach non-verbal children how to communicate. Of course, she had defaulted to pen and paper since the number of people who knew it was incredibly slim.

" Madame Estelle would like a plate of bacon-wrapped scallops, if you may," the cat added in with an enthusiastic purr. The waiter nodded and rushed off to retrieve their appetizers. This would certainly be a long, and fun, night. Though, she was waiting for some of this region's more high-profile guests to arrive before she further partook.

River Styx is high and wide...

Follow those shiny little coins down the wishing well - follow the money down the River. The weight of metal sinks, and every shining eye that gleams gold in life will one day join them in burial, never to surface again.

How heavy do you plan on weighing those pockets, B? What are you willing to sink to let her get back up for air? Those blue eyes of yours - can they still cry tears? Or is the only water they know... Is it the wash of the River?

---

His pockets were empty. Full of holes. Tattered clothes, reeking of salt water, hanging soggy and limp. Seaweed wrapped around his wrists, and his skin bore the pallid color of the drowned. Beside him, his Pokemon - his only companion, now - was cloaked in sand and shadow. Neither were dressed for the occasion.

He takes a deep, gurgling breath, and smiles his perpetual smile, as the Casino attendants puzzle over his existence in the lobby, running around in circles, getting nowhere - trying to figure out what the Hell to do with this living corpse who washed up on their doorstep.

His voice is quiet, yet warm - jovial, despite its bubbling, oozing, choking quality. "Really... Please, do not worry yourselves on my account, dear friends with whom I am not yet thoroughly acquainted - if you would simply direct me to your machines of chance, I am sure I could procure sufficient funds to obtain clothes and make mine appearance more to your liking - I am lucky, so lucky, so lucky to be alive -"

Did he need medical attention? Therapy? Jail time? The attendants couldn't quite tell - couldn't quite come to a determination.

Either way, based on the invitation he was waving around, he would need a change of clothes, at least. This, they could provide - after all, their anonymous benefactor had instructed them to make each and every patron feel like a million coins, and this strange new guest was no exception. They welcome him with open arms, and assist him with whatever he might need.

By the time he makes his grand entrance at the New Year's Gala, he is thoroughly dressed for the part - a fine teal Victorian waistcoat, complete with silver pocket watch and polished silver buttons, as well as light grey slacks and polished black shoes. A ruffled white shirt covers his arms, and his sand-colored hair is pulled back in a slick ponytail, tied with teal ribbon. Stubble shaven clean, and not a speck of seaweed in sight - even poor Leith was forced against her will to sport a matching teal bow on the shovel sticking out of her head. The Shadow Sandygast seems to have decided that it would be more effort to kill everyone trying to place a bow on her than to wear the bow itself, so everyone lives... for now.

Throughout the whole process of his cleaning and coiffing, the strange man had insisted - pleaded, even - to provide some compensation for this kindness. Did they need a chef? A waiter? Someone to scrub the floors? He would do anything to repay them, but they refused all manner of offers.

The smell of salt water still lingers on his flesh - no amount of oils or perfumes could wash it away. The scent permeates his very aura as he approaches the hostess of the grand occasion. Death still becomes him, and yet, his eyes burn with life.

"Pardon me, dear lady -" He begins. "I sincerely hope that Leith and I are not intruding on your fine event, as I imagine my invitation was sent merely as a courtesy. We are returned to this region from a long time away, you see..." His voice drifts off, eyes floating like seafoam on the edge of the beach - "...And... Well. We would like to get reacquainted with the fine folks who bring this land its rich character."

He extends a hand to Star, eyes twinkling.

Once upon a time, a gala like this would’ve registered as little more than another step in the routine; Another untapped market, where he could sell himself out to all the ruthless and sycophantic suits who found themselves on his ex-boss's payroll, knowingly or not.

Goto remembers those days vividly. All the nights he spent sucking up to the marks of his choice, complimenting their appearance as genuinely or ingeniously as he saw fit, only to turn face and verbally tear away any semblance of the term “fashionable” from their clothes.

It was his foolproof strategy; After all, the issue lied not in the ugliness of their own souls, but in something that could be changed on a whim. A change he so graciously offered with lips bitten, just for you, and no one else...

Indeed, during those days he’d been subjected to extravagance ad nauseum, but as those painful memories slowly tarnish and fade, he finds the idea of briefly returning to this realm a welcome treat. To return... or perhaps to introduce himself. Fizzytopia is a long way from home. Nobody here knows his name, and they’re all the better for it.

To celebrate the Lunar New Year, his ensemble took inspiration from the medieval past of his home region: The aesthetic of “Basara”, where people of all classes would dress and act in ways that defied the social order of their time. Maximalism is the name of the game, with clothes that displayed loud, clashing colors and crossed the boundaries of gender and station being favorites among those who wish to mock the glamor of their superiors.

Goto took to the gala dressed in a Raikou-stripped kimono, fully embracing the gaudy aesthetic of this year’s patron. A lavender sash clings to his slender waist, tied back into an intricate and flowing bow that resembles the Pokemon’s cloudy mane. Replacing his silver rose earring is a golden coin with a scarlet tassel hanging from it, and more splashes of red find their way into the ribbon he uses to tie his hair, as well as the eyeliner that gives his amber eyes a fiery edge.

Much to his own designs, there have been eyes on him all night. Wild whisperings fill the air wherever he tread, some admiring his boldness, while others can barely contain their distaste for his garish dress. It doesn’t matter, either way; He’s not here as the heir to a modern dynasty, or really any kind of person with any sort of reputation to lose. No, tonight he’s here as a rebel, and he intends to get up to as much trouble as he can before the sun rises.

And what better way to do that than to pay a visit to the most dazzling, intoxicating place in any gambling establishment? Framed against a backdrop of buzzing, neon-soaked machines, he finds his style being given a run for its money. He's not much of a slots person, but the nearest machine to the bar is a nice place to relax with a cold drink and watch the partygoers mingle. Who knows, perhaps he'll pick out a fellow misfit in the crowd...

The Masterses were neither fancy nor schmancy. Keith Masters did not grow up among high society. You could count the number of times he wore a full-on suit and tie on one hand. His wife, on the other hand, being the daughter of Kalos's former Pokémon League Champion, decidedly did grow up among high society, and so was the less surprised of the two when an invitation to a fancy New Year's party at Jirachi's Casino was delivered to the Poisonous Palace. Willa had taken to the idea right away- Keith had been a little less certain. Not so uncertain as to not be willing to consider the matter, but unsure all the same. Eventually, he relented when Willa floated an idea by him in regards to what they'd wear, and so, with Maribel coming along and heading off to the arcade, the married couple strolled hand in hand into the Casino.

They weren't the first to arrive, but they weren't far from it, either. Keith was sporting a pale purple suit with a yellow shirt underneath the jacket, the exact color scheme one might see from a Normal Form Weezing and the poisonous smoke it would produce, respectively. The tie he wore was the same shade of purple, though sported a yellow skull and crossbones design. He did not wear his usual Mega Hat, and thus his dark brown hair was neatly slicked back. Willa, meanwhile, was decked out in a dark purple dress, which featured elaborate designs that would not have looked out of place on an Arbok's hood. The light caught the Key Stone set into her Mega Hairclip, which she had worked into her hairdo for the night. Meowth and Meowstic, holding paws, were not far behind, both of them having been bathed earlier in the day (to their shared chagrin). Meowth himself had also polished his charm, which now gleamed like gold, and the Gigantaband he wore around his front left leg was so clean it looked new. Meowstic, meanwhile, sported a tasteful black bow atop her head, and the collar of blue fur around her neck was especially fluffy.

Only a few people had arrived before they did, but those people all seemed to already be starting a conversation of their own, though Keith and Willa both recognized Star, an acquaintance of Willa's mother's, and they also noticed in the process that her Espurr appeared to have evolved into a Meowstic. Tempted though they were to go over and say hi, they elected to hold off for the time being. It was quite rude, after all, to just barge in and interrupt a conversation. Perhaps they could catch up with Star later in the evening, as well as meet this mysterious man talking to her. Instead, their eyes were rather naturally drawn to the guy sitting at the slot machine nearest the bar, decked out in a Raikou-themed kimono, complete with a sash tied in a bow reminiscent of the Thunder Pokémon's thundercloud mane. A decidedly bold choice of clothing, but it had to be said, it certainly fit the theme of the celebration. And, well, they were at a party, and it only made sense to mingle, so off they went.

"Hey, I gotta say, I like the outfit," Keith stated as they approached Goto. "Very fitting for the Year of the Raikou."

"Indeed," Willa nodded in agreement. "I find the bow tied in the sash to be a nice touch," she added.

"Ah- but where are our manners?" Keith added. "I'm Keith Masters, and this is my lovely wife, Willa," he introduced them.

Willa gave a nod as Keith introduced her. "And who might you be?" she inquired, not unkindly.

The smell of saltwater permeated the air... such as it did in Shalour. There was a sort of comfort to it to the woman, even if her days in her home region were long gone. And, not to mention, this was the middle of the casino. But, such a familiar scent on such an unfamiliar man was a weird dichotomy to her. She could feel that, at the time being, she would feel comfortable conversing with this man... even if the Pokemon next to him was such an unnatural shade of purple.

Looking at Clair, she signed her response before allowing the Meowstic to speak.

"Hello, sorry for protruding your mind. This is Madam Estelle, yet she simply goes by Star during day-to-day and informal occasions. For reasons of her own, she has made a vow of silence. Such, I will be her voice," Clair spoke, before giving a bow. There was a sense of arrogance to the Meowstic's words as if she was a pampered queen that wished some reverence for those with who she conversed.

Before she could continue talking, the waiter for whom Clair ordered from earlier arrived. A shrimp cocktail for the cat, who hopped up onto the table and took a bite out of. For her trainer, the bacon-wrapped scallops with little toothpicks through them. Star took a bite of her food and a sip of her champagne before motioning for the man and his shadowy sand to sit down.

"Ah, yes, we wish to know your name. As for us, well, we have just recently arrived here. So, while we may not be as much use for your goals, it is still polite to dine in conversation at events such as this, no?" Clair purred out with a haughtiness. She had followed her trainer's words to the letter but added her own little twist to it. She a sly smile, the Meowstic purred as she ate some of her food.

"Please, order some food and drink. It is much more enjoyable to converse over hors d'oeuvres, the cat continued, an audible sigh coming from Star as it was obvious the word was misspelled on the invitation.

So much for being accurate... the woman thought as she took another bite of her appetizer. Still, this man, his smell, and his weird sense of formality were all the more intriguing.

The sound of whirling slot machines grows louder as the couple draws close to him. The cacophony is astonishingly loud, enough to drown out one’s thoughts. The mesmerizing colors and carefully-timed reel stops reach deep into the depths of the mind, tugging on the primal strings that were fascinated by the possibility of winning it big, and disarmed by the facade of video entertainment.

This deviously-crafted device claims countless victims every night. Even those privy to the psychology of gambling find themselves drawn to these unfair dealers. In fact, those who thought they knew better were all the more likely to feed the machine a satisfying fill, believing they hold the secret to beating the odds.

It’s thankful, then, that Keith and Willa show up when they do. Growing bored of people watching, Goto had turned to passing the time by testing his luck for a few rounds, which quickly turned into an uncountable number of spins. They find him hunched over in his seat, with a refill of his drink resting precariously upon the edge of the cabinet. Just speaking to him requires both of them to shout over the unceasing noise of a hundred other money-traps.

“Hm?” he perks up, hearing a voice from behind him. Grabbing his drink, the flamboyantly-dressed man spins around in his chair, one of his slender legs folded over the other. His eyes scan each of them quickly, widening in recognition at one of the two, and piecing together the identity of the other well before he states his name. Well, this is getting interesting...

“I appreciate the compliment. Might I add that you both look stunning, as well~” he says, his voice smooth as honey even when speaking over the din of the slots. Of course, he’s already noticed that Mr. Masters’ fit is... only a smidge better than store-bought, but he has no need for unsolicited critique. They both look nice, he’ll leave it at that.

The man, about 10 years their junior, bows politely to each of them as they introduce themselves, “a pleasure, Mrs. and Mr. Masters. I’m Guiseppe Goto. I work as a freelance tailor and fashion designer, but lately I’ve been enjoying the lifestyle of a wandering Trainer. Not unlike the both of you, I imagine,” he gestures toward their freshly-groomed Pokemon with a smile on his face. Unlike many of the others, he doesn't have any companions out to keep him company, but he could easily have a ball or six tucked underneath his roomy kimono.

“If you don’t mind me asking: What brings the daughter of a Kalosian icon so far from home?”

Such were the perils of a party in a casino- it was so loud in there that Keith and Willa had to damn near shout to actually catch the man's attention. Once they had it, his eyes seemed to widen in recognition as he saw Willa. Not altogether unexpected, if indeed the invitations to this party had gone out to some of the more high-profile names in the region, because whatever her classmates in Kiloude Academy would have her believe to the contrary, being the daughter of former League Champion and current movie star Diantha definitely qualified. And while Willa didn't exactly revel in such recognition, she remained composed nonetheless.

The man spoke up, accepting the compliment on his attire, while smoothly telling the couple that they both looked stunning as well. "Ah, thank you," Keith smiled. "Very kind of you to say."

"Indeed," Willa nodded, allowing herself a small smile as well.

He went on, introducing himself as Guiseppe Goto. A freelance tailor and fashion designer, and as of late, a Pokémon Trainer. The Masterses nodded as Goto supposed his enjoying the lifestyle of a wandering Trainer might put him in the same boat as the couple before him. "I've been enjoying that lifestyle since I was ten," Keith replied. "It's hard to believe how long it's been since I left home with nothing but a Koffing, a new Pokédex, and entirely too much ambition," he chuckled.

"I began traveling as a Trainer later on in life, but I share the sentiment," added Willa. Then came the question from Goto to Willa specifically- that being, what brought her so far from her home region. "Well, my original plan was to leave home with Yanmega and travel around Kalos," said Willa. "Earn the Gym Badges, challenge the Elite Four, take mother's old position as Champion. But mother had shot some movies here in Fizzytopia, and would tell me stories about this region. It seemed to me as though this region is where Trainers just tend to congregate from all over, and so I figured that that would make Fizzytopia a good place to start my journey, to see how well I measured up against Trainers from all sorts of different regions."

"Case in point, in the town where we live, the only person living there to be born in Fizzytopia is our daughter Maribel," Keith added. "I'm from Hoenn, myself."

"And I might very well have left Fizzytopia once I was satisfied with my training, only I ended up meeting this man right here," Willa added, smiling at Keith.

Keith smiled back. "And I thank Arceus for that every day," he replied. The temptation to just look into each others' eyes was strong, but they resisted, turning their attention back to Goto before they could start making things awkward.

"So, what sort of Pokémon do you train, Guiseppe?" Willa inquired. "I mentioned my first partner being my Yanmega, and of course you see Meowstic there, though I train others as well. And my husband is actually a fairly accomplished Poison-type specialist," she added. "He's instilled me with an appreciation for the type I'm not certain I'd have had otherwise, as perhaps our outfits for the evening would imply."

Keith smiled. "If I can help someone to see the good in Poison-types, I feel like I've done my job," he stated.

Rivers and roads... Rivers and roads... Rivers 'til I reach you.

The saltwater-scented man patiently waits for Star to finish signing to Clair, offering surprisingly little mental resistance to the intrusion on his thoughts. Smile unbroken, his dancing ocean eyes maintain a gentle focus on the Meowstic, responding to her polite bow with a gracious one of his own.

Before the conversation can continue, the waiter serves some delightful seafood hors d'oeuvres to the famous Madam and her esteemed Voice. Leith the Sandygast, who, up until that very moment, had maintained a posture and expression of complete detachment and disinterest, seems well and truly confused as the pair partake in their first bites.

What have they done to these creatures of the sea, the Sandygast questions her companion. They smell strange, and I do not sense any life from them.

"...Ah, I do suppose they would not have much in the way of restaurants or prepared foods to speak of in the Realm of Shadows... None that I'm aware of, at least," the man admits with an odd little chuckle. "Would you be opposed to some fresh berries instead, my dear Leith? I fear your usual fare may be... disagreeable to others present."

Berries will suffice, if they are freshly picked and still possessed of life unspoiled.

The man nods, content that a solution to his Pokémon's appetites his been achieved. Upon the wordless gesture from Star, he takes a seat at the table, as does Leith, if only to get a better look at the food which so intrigues her.

The young man's smile flickers slightly at the request for his name. Before he indulges, however, he very humbly and respectfully requests fresh berries for his Shadow Sandygast - whatever is in season - and, as for himself... Whatever the chef would recommend, or most like to prepare, he will most graciously eat - along with whatever wine pairing would most suit the dish. "You'll find I am quite the lover of all foods, really," the man remarks with an endearing earnestness. As the waiter makes note of the order and moves to see it filled, the man turns his attention back to Clair.

"Oh, yes... You wish for introductions? I daresay that even if you've heard of me, I may not be so easily recognized nowadays... Ohohohohohohohohohoho~" The man's laugh echoes with almost other-worldly aspect, despite being undeniably friendly. "Allow me to begin by introducing Leith, of the Shadow Realm. She is not long away from her homeland, but please allow me to reassure you that her disposition, while cold, is not harmful provided that her existence is not under immediate and significant threat, which I believe to be quite reasonable, would you not agree?" The unfading smile widens. "As for me, Madam Estelle, if it is not disagreeable to such an esteemed personage as yourself, and to your most distinguished Voice, I would like to dispense with title and formality when addressed. Simply call me... Bedivere."

I'm just a wandering spirit, dead and gone

All Star could do was blink at the actions of the man and his Pokemon. Fresh life..? The thought perturbed her, making her feel uncomfortable at the thought. Was this man... a ghost? A spirit? She knew not, but took a deep breath in. He was, at the very least, being cordial.

Introducing himself, the woman took note of his words... as well as his strange laughter. Someone who would be well known here in this land? She blinked, still quite unfamiliar with this place as a whole. Though, from his laughter and demeanor, it could only be assumed that he had played an important role here. Then, his name.

"It is nice to meet you, Mister Bedevire," Clair translates as Star reaches out her hand in greeting. It was, after all, a formality to greet someone like that once they became acquainted. Yet, she had an odd feeling... And then noticed some familiar faces beyond Bedevire.

Perhaps Willa's Husband would know more... she thought, looking at them as they spoke with an eccentrically dressed man. No, we all will see each other eventually over the night. For now, he is being kind, and it is best to engage any person with the same kindness.

The sight of such a lovey-dovey couple puts a smile on Goto’s face, that’s for sure. He politely lets them reminisce over the course of their introductions. They have that luxury, after all.

The man takes another sip of his drink, and feels the spirits burn their way down his throat. He sits up in one graceful motion, and standing up straight he’s nearly half-a-head taller Keith. His free hand slips under the dangling sleeve of his outfit, supporting his elbow as he swirls his glass around, filling the gap in the conversation with the sound of clattering ice cubes.

“Please, follow me. There’s at least some semblance of quiet over this way,” Goto says. His double-toothed geta clack against the carpets with every step, carrying him away from the noisy machines and toward the tables.

“I see. So you, too, were drawn-in by the allure of the melting pot? It’s an interesting feeling, isn’t it? To experience things you never could have back home, while still having that familiar niche to go back to, when all was said and done,” he chuckles, glancing over his shoulder occasionally as they walk and talk, “perhaps I’ll have to see how Little Kanto compares to the real deal, as my first adventure of the new year.”

When his eyes turn forwards again, he notices a regally-dressed woman staring at him from another table. Goto’s head cocks in curiosity, having seen that face before, but not having a name to pair it with right now. No matter, the night is still plenty young...

“Refreshments are on me, as long as I have your ear,” the man hums as he coils into his seat. The sound of the slots is merely an echo in the distance now, replaced instead by a sea of murmurings. There’s every temptation to simply sit and eavesdrop, but he keeps his focus on the Masterses, like a good host should.

Then the topic of Pokemon preferences comes up, breaking the ice after their lengthy introductions, “based on your dress, I had a feeling one or both of you had a toxic infatuation. I’m certainly partial to them, myself, but I most prefer Pokemon that are beautiful, or assist me in my work, regardless of Type.”

To demonstrate, Goto pulls his hand out of his sleeve, revealing three shrunken-down Pokeballs fanned between his fingers. With an impish grin, he lets them roll out of his grasp, each one popping open as they hit the table to release one of his partner Pokemon.

“I started out with my Remoraid, Derringer,” he says, pointing toward the triggerfish that hovers above the banquet table, peering cautiously at both Trainers, “he’s a tad shy, but he rarely misses a shot when it counts. I received him as a gift from someone I looked up to.”

“Over there is Mercury, my Clefairy,” he says, looking over to see his trusty Fairy-type already sitting at one of the machines. A sigh escapes his lips, and he snaps his fingers together loudly. In a moment, Mercury blinks out of existence, before reappearing atop an empty plate with a pouty look on his face, “I received him from the Game Corner in Celadon. Apparently, they let him play the machines after hours, leading to his unfortunate taste for gambling.”

The two Pokemon greet Willa and Keith, sharing their Trainer’s cordial bow despite their wildly different personalities... Wait, two? Wasn’t there a third?

Suddenly, a fuzzy yellow Joltik leaps its way onto Goto’s face, having been hidden against the pattern of his kimono the entire time. The clothier chuckles, plucking the tiny spider off his cheek and cradling it in the palm of my hand, “and this is Nephila. I found him feeding off electricity while I was staying in a hotel, and I've been incorporating his silk into my art for quite some time now... Believe it or not, he even saved my life, at one point.”

A pleasant conversation was underway, but there was one issue, that being the ambient noise being a tad much. And Goto was quick to remedy this, standing up (revealing in the process that he was taller than Keith) and leading the Masterses over towards the tables, and more to the point, away from the noisy machines, which, while they certainly had their allure, were not so conducive to conversation.

The couple nodded as Goto summed it up very nicely- getting to experience things they never would have in their respective home regions, while still having some sense of familiarity. "Oh, absolutely," Keith nodded. " I was very surprised how easy it is to get ahold of Lava Cookies out here, for one thing- never figured the specialty of my hometown would be so readily available elsewhere."

They soon got to the subject of Pokémon, and Goto stated that he himself was partial to Poison-types, but had a preference for Pokémon that were beautiful or else capable of assisting him in his work. After this, he let a trio of Poké Balls fall onto the table, each one unleashing a different Pokémon. Derringer the Remoraid, Goto's first partner, whose shyness was met with patient, friendly smiles from the couple; Mercury the Clefairy, who had to be summoned back from the slot machine he had so immediately gone to, with Goto explaining that the Clefairy had been received from the Game Corner in Celadon City; and Nephila the Joltik, who wasn't immediately visible at first, due to blending in very nicely with his Trainer's clothing. Apparently, the Joltik's silk was of great use to Goto, and the Kanto-native even claimed the Joltik to have saved his life. "I believe it," Keith stated at once with a nod.

"The capabilities of Pokémon both large and small never cease to amaze me," stated Willa. "Absolutely I could believe your Joltik to have saved your life, and I have no doubt the tale would be an interesting one. I for one would love to hear it."

"Seconded," Keith agreed. "Before that, though, I think it's only right Willa and I introduce the Pokémon we brought along as well," he added. "You've seen my Meowth, of course."

"And my Meowstic," Willa added.

"Also, Meowth can-" began Keith.

"Can talk," Meowth interrupted smoothly. "Good ta meet youse, Goto."

"Mrrrowstic," Meowstic added with a polite nod.

Keith gave a small sigh, though it was accompanied by a smile. Electing to say nothing more on the matter at this time, he instead produced a pair of Poké Balls, holding them both up, at which they opened up. The more weathered Poké Ball let loose a two-headed being that was the clear inspiration behind the color scheme of Keith's suit, while the other one let out a powerful dark purple serpent whose species was the clear inspiration behind Willa's dress. "This is Gemini, my Weezing, and Mustard, his second head," Keith stated, introducing the larger of the Weezing's heads, then the smaller. "Gemini was my first partner. Rescued him as a baby Koffing in this cave on the edge of town from a pair of bully Machop beating him up. After he recovered in the Pokémon Center, Nurse Joy asked me to watch Koffing for a week before letting him go back into the wild. And, well, when the week was up, Koffing didn't want to leave, and I didn't want him to go, and the rest is history."

"Weezing weez," nodded Gemini, both heads smiling.

"Heh," Keith smiled back at his starter. "And this here is Nagini, my Arbok," he added, turning to the Cobra Pokémon. "Rescued her from a laboratory where Team Rocket were experimenting on Ekans. She and Gemini both had something of a mischievous streak in their youths, and were even a couple at one point, but they're a lot more mature these days," he explained. "Among the most helpful of my Pokémon when it came to raising our daughter- hearing an Arbok soothingly hiss a lullaby is definitely an experience," he grinned.

"Chaaaaboka," Nagini hissed, politely bowing to Goto.

"As for what I brought," stated Willa, who produced a pair of Ultra Balls, and opened them up as well. One of them let loose a Yanmega who hovered above his Trainer's head, carefully controlling his fluttering so as to not shatter anything. Or anyone. And from the other one emerged a graceful Mienfoo, who silently observed her surroundings. "I'm afraid I've never been one to nickname my Pokémon, personally, but Yanmega here is my first partner. Mother took me to the Friend Safari in Kiloude many years ago, where I caught a lively Yanma. He already knew Ancient Power, too, and thus was quick to evolve. He has proved an invaluable and unquestionably trustworthy partner many times over. As for Mienfoo, she is assuredly every bit as powerful as she is graceful. Myself, Keith, and our daughter all made our attempts at battling her in the hopes of catching her, but in the end it was myself and my Probopass who got Mienfoo's approval. Yanmega, Mienfoo, say hello, won't you?" she said.

"Yan ya!" rumbled Yanmega.

"Foo," exhaled Meinfoo, bowing respectfully to Goto.

Meanwhile, at the entrance, it became clear that the Masterses were not the only couple living at Sludge Wave Coast to be issued an invitation to this event. The doors were psychically opened, and a Gallade entered, before stepping off to the side, still telekinetically holding the doors open, for in came Diana Macks and Marv Liss, the former dressed in a dazzling purple, blue, and black gown, the latter dressed in a red, yellow, and black suit. It would have been easy enough to compare them to a Volbeat and Illumise as is, but they made it all the easier by having the real deal with them for comparison- Sweet the Illumise fluttered around their heads, while Bright the Volbeat hovered overhead, acting to Illuminate the couple. The light was caught by a number of carefully placed sequins on their outfits, so that the couple appeared to literally sparkle. Whether anyone took immediate and obvious notice of them, however, they didn't seem fazed by too much- after making their decidedly interesting entrance, they made their way to a table, not far from where everyone else present was sitting, but all the same, they were not intrusive- everyone else had their own conversations going on at the moment, after all, and they weren't so rude as to try and interrupt. Ordering themselves some refreshments would suffice for the time being.

The devil's own luck

Ah yes, another day, another sin. A place ripe for harvest, and well harvest he shall. He could feel the waitstaff coil at his presence, though most of them could not exactly place why. Was it, perhaps, the hair as white as bone? His unnatural eyes hidden behind tinted shades? Or the haughty swagger he walked with. That he was going to be the center of attention and knew it. Though, unfortunately, he mark would not be here. Good. He had more time to play the mouse for the unaware cat.

Adjusting his purple tie, the man walked into the party. He could feel more than a few eyes shift towards him as the newest guest, but more than a few kept watching. The usually shaggy hair was slicked back, and his pinstripe suit was more than just a fashion statement. A classy, diamond-encrusted silver watch caressed his left wrist and gilded silver studs shining against the golden lights. His black dress shoes were the blandest thing of his attire, but well he cared not.

Grabbing a compactor, he opened it to check to make sure his look wasn’t messed up. Little did anyone know, the soul he kept captive was behind the mirror, bouncing around fervently. Did it sense the boy here? No, he’d know if that kid was here. Maybe, if he’d arrive later in that night, he’d leave a little... treat for him.

Scanning the room, he could sense... familiar auras. Yet, this was not his place to pry with them. No, far from it. He was here to partake in his hedonism, not play therapist. Tragic souls such as those left a vile taste in his mouth. Nothing to give, nothing to take. It was such a drab experience, the entire thing a false charade.

So, plucking a glass of champagne and a shrimp cocktail from two waiters, he swirled around before making his way to an empty table not far from the couple that walked in just before him. Gambling would come soon, but first, he needed to attract some potential marks. As he sipped and ate, he slowly drew in a crowd. Men and women alike were soon now sitting at the table, seeming to be unable to resist his charm.

“Uh, sir. May we have your invitation?” A waiter soon came up and asked. “We forgot to retrieve it at the door.”

“My pleasure” the man responded, the card soon appearing in his hand after a flick of the risk. “The name is Lyle, I should be down there.” He snapped his fingers, giving off a devilish smirk.

“Of course sir,” the waiter responded with a curt nod, his face seems to have experienced... something.

“Now then, my friends, who wants to partake in some Roulette?” he proposed with an audible, haughty chortle.

Their interest in his Joltik’s deed comes as no surprise to him; Who wouldn’t want to hear the story behind such an incredible turn of fate? Goto glances at the two felines holding paws, and his eyes widen in surprise at the revelation that one of them can speak. A saying worms its way into his mind, amusing in its aptness to both sides of the conversation:

Quote:
“It is said that ‘a cat has nine lives,’ yet care would wear them all out.”
“Well, I’ll be...” he remarks, letting Joltik jump back onto his clothes before he leans forward and rests his chin atop his fist. A guileful smirk crawls its way onto his lips as he knocks back the last of his drink, only to hold his glass aloft and rattle the booze-soaked ice cubes within.

“Perhaps I’ve overindulged a little,” Goto jokes, setting the empty cup on a passing tray, “I’m afraid that story is rather long. Long and much too bitter for an occasion like this. Another time will have to suffice.”

With that understanding out of the way, Goto sits quietly and watches as the couple introduces their own pocket companions. Keith certainly demonstrates his affinity for all things venomous, and he starts to feel an unmistakable sense of deja vu in the visage of a Meowth, Arbok and Weezing all together in one place...

Willa’s team, on the other hand, certainly intrigues him with how similar her tastes are to his own. Yanmega’s prismatic wings reflect the neon light of the slots like a kaleidoscope, while he almost wants to reach out and pet the sleeve-like fur that protects Mienfoo from the wind atop their mountainous training grounds. Instead, he simply bows back to the little Fighting-type, before fixing his hair and returning his attention to Willa’s story.

“I see... It seems like those are all wonderful memories to make,” he smiles genuinely toward the Masterses and their Pokemon. He caught himself focusing on Gemini and Nagini, and a bit of sympathy found its way into his expression, “even if they may not have been wonderful in the moment, there are times a memory can become a happy thing because of the people you meet, or the adversities you overcome.”

Memories. What memories can he share, really? His time in Fizzytopia has been quite short, and everything before that... Well, he can only tease at his reasons for wandering the world. That’s a bandaid that had to come off slowly, lest the weight of it became crushing...

Ah, how about mentioning that he was on the set of a movie, once? Perfect; He’ll meet tales of their adventures with one of his own, and embellish it until it shines brighter than a wishing star.

But before he can segue into that topic, the doors swing open, announcing the arrival of yet more guests. He looks toward the hall, curiously eyeing the procession of phosphorescent Pokemon. Seeing the gorgeous gown of the lady who hangs on her fiance’s arm, he wonders briefly if he was secretly invited to a wedding, instead of a New Year’s celebration.

Beyond simply observing them for a moment, Goto pays them no mind. He’s still interested in conversing with the couple in front of him, rather than chasing after every thread that dangles before him.

“I imagine after having lived here for some time, you’re more familiar with Fizzytopia than I am. You’ve heard of Djinn’s Archive, haven’t you? It’s discovery was big news, even back home,” he begins.

Goto reaches for his glass, only to remember that he discarded it. With a sigh and a grin, he turns toward the Fairy Pokemon’s seat, “Mercury, why don’t you fetch myself and these fine folks something to dri-”

He stops when he notices an empty chair, and he immediately sticks his neck up to look over the crowd. A glimpse of the Pokemon’s spiraling tail sticks out from one of the tables, and he spots Mercury there, sitting with...

Goto darts up from his seat, and yet he doesn't quite know why he’s become so unnerved. Is it paranoia invading an otherwise innocent moment of mischief? Is it his intuition, warning him the moment it picked up on the atmosphere of complete and utter control that clung to that man like strong cologne?

“I... apologize for cutting this short, but I can’t let him wander about on his own. I hope you both have a fabulous night,” he says, bowing to them as he gathered up his other two Pokemon and made his way toward the gambling table.

---

Practically the moment the word “roulette” slips out of his lips, there’s already a most peculiar guest at his table. A small, pink star sits before Lyle, having seemingly phased-in from the feywild upon his request for a game.

Mercury sits atop the crimson tablecloth, staring up at the man with eyes that glimmer like moonstones. His butterfly wings flap excitedly, almost generating enough lift to send him rocketing off the table in a trail of stardust.

The lunar Pokemon claps his hands together, and a ruffle of cards spontaneously appears between them as he separates. His eyes narrow, and a fang-tipped smirk makes it clear without words what he’s come here for: A ramblin’, gamblin’ old time!

Suddenly, Lyle notices a man burst through the enchanted crowd, dressed to the nines in a way that completely out-nined everyone else here. He seems a bit hurried for breath as he reaches in to snatch away the pink blob, who looks almost like he’d been shaken awake from a pleasant dream as he dangles by his tail in the man’s grasp.

“Please, forgive the both of us for barging in unannounced,” Goto says, sighing in relief as he runs a hand through his raven hair. He stares distantly at Lyle, expressing some vague sense of suspicion toward him before he wordlessly begins walking away.

With his back turned to the demon’s table, he sees Mercury scowl indignantly at being tucked beneath Goto’s arm like a pillow. He locks eyes with the man as his chance at enjoying a nice game of stakes is slowly torn away from him, but quickly enough his frown flips into a devious grin.

The Clefairy worms his hand into the tailor’s pocket, pulling out a glimmering cyan rock. With the care of a surgeon, he reaches up to tap his Trainer on the shoulder, coaxing him into turning back, only to see no-one behind him.

Just as his confusion reaches its peak, Mercury shoves the Dawn Stone into Goto’s palm, and murmurs quietly. A starry vortex swirls into being around his arm, and heightened Gravity pulls his hand down until it slams the rock upon the table, with Mercury pointing toward the purple spaces. Now that’s an enthusiastic way to place a bet!

Goto was surprised, of course, at Meowth's talent for talking, joking about how he must have drank too much, before admitting that the story behind his Joltik saving him was long, and also something of a bitter one, stating that he would have to tell it another time. Keith and Willa nodded understandingly. "Of course," Willa stated. "It's just as well, honestly- Keith and I have our fair share of long stories regarding ourselves and our own Pokémon, it might be better to keep them for another occasion."

"Agreed," Keith nodded. "You'd be very welcome to come visit us, of course," he said to Goto. "We live in Sludge Wave Coast, that small coastal town at the end of Route 1."

Afterwards came the Pokémon. Goto observed as the Arbok and Weezing were sent out, and the presence of an Arbok, a Weezing, and a talking Meowth all in one place was by no means lost on him. If he thought that was something, he should watch Keith, Willa, and Meowth all do Z-Move poses together! Towards Willa's Pokémon he showed intrigue, gathering from the beautiful Yanmega and the graceful Mienfoo that their tastes were not too dissimilar. He regarded the Arbok and Weezing with something of a sympathetic expression, and Gemini, Mustard, and Nagini all picked up on this, causing the Poison-types to wonder whether Goto might have seen similar hardships in his own youth. Their smiles in return were small yet genuine and appreciative.

Before the conversation could continue, however, was when Diana and Marv made their entrance, and Goto was not the only one among them to take notice. "Ah, good, Diana and Marv made it," Keith stated. "Marv was right- Bright's tail light really made that entrance."

"Indeed," Willa agreed. Once the conversation picked back up, she nodded to Goto. "We have indeed heard of it," she stated. "A friend of ours even went there herself, and seems to have had quite the adventure."

However, this was where their conversation was to cut short for the time being, for Goto found that his Clefairy had gone off on his own, which he, to put it mildly, did not approve of. The Masterses nodded their understanding. "The same to you, it was good to meet you," Keith stated before Goto headed off. "Nice guy," he remarked to Willa.

"Indeed," Willa nodded. "Though that man over there... I'm not sure what to make of him," she added, slightly warily.

"Yeah, he seems charming, too, but... almost overly so, if that makes sense?" Keith murmured. "I heard him asking about roulette, but I'm not sure if- oh, no," he groaned, as one of the unopened balls on his belt popped open- the Vampire Ball. Moments later, he was met with the pitch-black voids of darkness that were the eyes of his decidedly creepy Jigglypuff. "Lavender, you can't posibly be considering-" he began.

"Jiggly Jigglypuff," Lavender nodded.

Keith gave a small sigh. "You're gonna be careful, right?" he asked.

"Puff." Another nod, accompanied by the usual creepy whisper, albeit somehow a bit reassuring as well. With that, the Jigglypuff Teleported out of sight.

"...what interest does Lavender have in gambling?" Willa inquired, raising a single eyebrow.

"I have no idea, nor do I think I want to know," Keith shook his head. "Well, for now, what say we get ourselves something to eat and drink?" he suggested.

"I would like that," Willa nodded, and so that's just what the couple went off to do.

~~~~~
Diana and Marv were not the only ones who made a noticeable entrance- another man, swaggering in with confidence, drew attention as though he was a Pokémon using Follow Me. At least with Diana and Marv, part of what drew attention to their entrance was their notoriety- Diana Macks's face was known to anyone who had ever watched any news coverage of any of the numerous raid battles across Fizzytopia, ever, starting with the Gigantamax Snorlax that started it all off, both the prevalence of Dynamax in the region and Diana and Marv's news careers; but what had really skyrocketed their careers was the infamous Primal Dialga incident, a situation brought to light in the public eye through the intense and epic footage shot by Diana and Marv at great personal risk.
The couple approached the table, not long after Goto had been coerced by his Clefairy into placing a bet. "Roulette, hm?" said Diana. "I suppose we can play a little. Marv, what say you?"
"Nothing ventured, nothing gained," Marv responded.
"Ah, though first I would think introductions would be in order, surely," added Diana, now addressing the mysterious man who had suggested the idea of roulette in the first place. "I'm Diana Macks."
"Marvin Liss," Marv added.
The lights flickered. For a moment, nothing seemed to happen to follow that up, but then they all went out, albeit only for a brief second. As they came back on, though, there floated before the mysterious man, fixing him with a creepy, unblinking stare with a pair of pitch-black voids of darkness that she called her eyes, was Lavender the Jigglypuff. Her stubby arms bore ominous crimson stains, and her small smile was unnerving to match her eyes. She seemed almost fascinated with this mysterious man, though not in the same way as the others who had been drawn to the table by his charms. In fact, something about her gaze almost felt like a warning. A warning to not fuck with the Friends she would so viciously Guard, a warning to not fuck with the Jigglypuff who aspired to eat Giratina. With that point hopefully sufficiently conveyed, Lavender, not breaking the eye contact for a moment, dropped several shiny Coins onto the table.
Diana and Marv did not seem overly surprised at Lavender's sudden appearance, though both looked suitably wary of the Jigglypuff all the same. Nevertheless, they too placed their wagers, both in the form of small piles of Coins of their own. "What was it Keith always said he'd do at this?" Diana wondered out loud.
"He always bet on Blue Wynaut," stated Marv, as he did just that. "Occasionally on Purple Wynaut as well, he told me once."
"Well, I'm feeling the Shiny luck tonight," chuckled Diana, placing her own bet on Purple Wynaut.
"Bebeat..." Bright murmured, eyeing the man warily.
"Illumiii..." agreed Sweet quietly, giving a small nod as well. They both had a bad feeling, and were hoping to ensure their respective Trainers didn't fall into any sort of trap.
Marv, do be careful, Steakknife's voice sounded in Marv's head. I have no idea what to make of this man...
Duly noted, Marv thought back to his Gallade.
I marvel at the stars, and feel my heart overflow... Further down the river.
Bedivere takes Star's hand, lifting it with cold, yet gentle fingers. He leans to give Star's hand a gentlemanly kiss - quick and polite, his eerily blue lips barely grazing Star's skin. "The pleasure is all mine, Madam Estelle," he says warmly as he rights himself, letting go with a soft motion. Such greetings were commonplace in Bedivere's past, and the grace with which he performs expresses his feelings of comfort and ease in such situations.
The waiter is quick to provide Leith with her fresh fruit: persimmons and pomegranates, arranged beautifully with winter blossom garnishes. Leith does not hesitate to grab a pomegranate and a stray blossom, swallowing them whole. A satisfied expression overcomes her face, as she sits content. Within her stomach, the fruit's life essence drains slowly, steadily, bolstering her own shadowy lifeforce. Though some particularly grisly Pokedex entries describe the process when applied to living creatures, Leith actually preferred vegetarian fare - kicking and screaming prey gave her indigestion, and took effort to catch. Far better to partake in the fruit of the vine - the bounty of the trees - the gentle, sweet plants which rendered unto her their life without complaint or resistance. There was no mercy in her dietary habits... it was simply easier this way.
Bedivere smiles with appreciation at his Pokémon's enjoyment of her food, and seems eager to continue his conversation with Star - only, he is interrupted by the pair of waiters carrying a truly impressive dish. Placed before the eerie gentleman is an antique roulette wheel, repurposed as a dish for an impressive amount of hors d'oeuvres, each number obscured by a piece of sushi. It appears that the sushi on the black spaces are either wrapped in dark seaweed, rolled in black tobiko or made with balatinaw instead of the traditional sushi rice. The red spaces, by contrast, contain pieces of sushi rolled rolled in red tobiko, made with rakthashali rice, or dolloped with fiery red sriracha and spicy chipotle mayo. Circular slots installed in the wheel allow each piece to be paired with a different shot of liquid beside it - the pairing Bedivere had requested. The dish itself even spins!
"Fancy a spin of the roulette wheel?" The waiter asks provocatively, motioning to the display. "Not all is as it seems... Our chef has added all manner of surprises with this particular wheel, including our Russian Roulette special... a piece of sushi with a hidden ghost pepper inside, though I won't say which one. Perfect for an adventurous type such as yourself."
"Ohohohoho, I could not ask for better - thank you, truly! Please, pass my effusive and earnest compliments on to the chef," Bedivere gushes, rubbing his hands together with delight. The two waiters bow with a flourish before walking away to serve other guests. Bedivere regards them both with a curious expression. It was true, he was no stranger to the Casino... That fateful day of the attack, he had performed triage on a number of Staff members, smiling all the while. Had they remembered his kindness, or were they simply responding to a request, and nothing more...?
"There is plenty here to share, Madam..." Bedivere graciously offers. "Though I certainly understand if you decide you would rather not risk the Russian Roulette special. Still, I cannot imagine I will be able to finish all of this myself..."
Jirachi's Casino, a grand building with events held on far grander scales. Allison had been told tales of the place regularly by her uncle starting as early as her first memories go, if not further back still. Yet, due to her young age, she had not been allowed to step foot inside when the machines ran in previous years, nor would she have been allowed even now that the establishment had reopened were it not for the changes of gambling rules to prevent any real monetary gain. And so she found herself wandering somewhat aimlessly through the tall front doors into the massive building.
The place was truly and utterly... astonishing. Amazed by the sight of it all, the young girl nearly slammed face first into a slot machine as she wandered about on more than one occasion. The splendor of it all was unreal, and more than enough to remind her of the state of the somewhat shabby clothes she wore, grossly clashing against the beauty of her surroundings. But after a brief moment to collect herself and a moment still to take the deepest cleansing breath she could muster, Allison's eyes roared with intensity as she marched towards the place she had always dreamed of visiting. No, of something far greater than simple sightseeing.
She was off... to the Racetracks!
...only to arrive and find the place scant empty of trainers looking for a good time at the moment. There were plenty wanderers, and likely more wishing to place bets, but no upcoming races at the moment. But it was early in the opening, surely someone would be along sooner rather than later. Best now to occupy herself to pass the time.
The girl was fairly certain that there was a small group forming up front, but when she had passed through the area it was clear that her attire was not suited for any form of higher society circumstances at the moment. No, for now she would make way to the Arcade to pass the time. Surely something amongst the variety of games there would pique her interest.
The Lunar New Year party at Jirachi's Casino was truly an event for the upper crust, the pinnacle of Fizzytopian high society. And of course, as one would expect with an event such as this, children were not permitted to attend. A sad fact for the more well-behaved of children (to say nothing of certain individuals who looked indisputably under the age limit despite having existed for a millenium and a half!), but, well, gambling, alcohol, things of that nature... allowing children into such a party, that just did not seem like a good idea.
Fortunately, there was an area within the establishment of Jirachi's Casino that was actually quite accommodating for any children that might have been feeling left out- namely, the arcade. That said, far from feeling left out by not being permitted to attend the party along with her parents, Maribel Masters was enjoying herself immensely. Well, for the most part, anyway- while the machines and games were indeed great fun, she did kinda wish there were more people there, as much fun as it was to get some of her Pokémon in on all of this. Part of the fun of being a Pokémon Trainer, after all, was getting to meet new people, make new friends.
And it seemed as though that wish was about to come true, for Allison entered the arcade in time to watch an intense game of air hockey between a girl around her age and a Trevenant that was about to reach its thrilling conclusion. Maribel was dressed as usual, in her black shirt and skirt, and of course, the cowboy hat with a Key Stone set into the front, more or less exactly like the one her father would usually wear. Still decidedly casual wear, but nice enough that she probably wouldn't seem too out of place in the party if she were old enough. Maybe. Possibly. At any rate, the outfit would not have stood out above some of the more extravagant outfits some of the partygoers were sporting that night.
"Yes! I win!" Trevenant exclaimed happily, speaking human language with a childish glee that seemed at odds with the Elder Tree Pokémon's eerie appearance, as Maribel had failed to block the puck from entering her goal for the final time.
"Hah... whew, good game, Trevenant," smiled Maribel, offering a handshake, which Trevenant took with one of his branches. "Wanna play again?"
Trevenant shook his head. "I'm good for now, thanks," he replied. "But I think someone just came in, so maybe they'd be up for a game?" he suggested.
Maribel turned to look, spotting Allison. "Ooh, yeah!" she smiled, happy to see another kid around here. "Come on, Trevenant, let's go say hello." And Trevenant nodded in agreement, following Maribel as the young Trainer walked over to introduce herself to the newcomer. "Hi," Maribel greeted Allison with a genuine, friendly smile. "I'm Maribel Masters, and this here is my partner Trevenant. Who are you?"
"Hi," Trevenant chimed in with a small wave.
The Arcade was filled with nearly as many flashing lights as the main floor of the Casino, and once again Allison began to feel overwhelmed and a bit out of place. A quick flash of light from one of the balls nestled in her boot revealed a friendly and calming face, though, a bird with swirling purple and grey feathers and red tinted eyes. To those unfamiliar Tina might seem a Shadow Pokemon at quick glance, prone to bouts of aggression, but the truth couldn't be more opposite to the idea. The small Pidove coos happily upon perching atop the girl's shoulder and nuzzling into the side of her head.
"Thanks Tina," Allison sighed as she calmed a bit and ventured further in, and quickly discovered another young girl playing air hockey opposite to a large tree-like Pokemon, the latter of whom managing to win the game of reflexes despite its rather stiff appearance.
Not recognizing the creature, Allison digs about in her bag a moment before producing a rather old Pokedex, an original model, slightly cracked and worn as an obvious hand-me-down. The cracked screen buzzes grey, desperately attempting to produce a picture as it reads data. "Treven- der Tree Pok- It can con- will. It will- arm the for- never lea-" The readout ends after cutting out repeatedly, giving no real information but leaving a bit of an irritated look on the girl's face as she pushes it back into her pack.
It's at this point that Allison is approached by the other girl, introducing herself as Maribel Masters. She seemed friendly enough, but Allison couldn't help but think she had heard the name before. Or maybe read it? Her mind was fuzzy on the thought. Still, there was no reason not to be friendly, especially when she had just given the name of her Pokemon that the Pokedex couldn't properly read.
"Name's Allison, and this here is Tina," the girl's still irritated voice practically grunts out before Tina coos once more, nestling closer to Allison's head as the bird plays with her hair, helping her calm again, "Don't worry about the color, she's plenty friendly."
Getting a better look at Maribel, Allison's face sunk a little. Even the kids here were well dressed. Maybe she really was out of place and out of luck in making her big break here.
What a cyanide surprise you've left for my eyes
Star just looked in awe at what Bedivere had received from the chef. An old roulette wheel, each slot having a different sort of piece of sushi. Some benign, and others were extremely spicy. It was truly a kind of roulette game, though to do it with food felt odd to the woman.
Food was meant to be refined, and palatable. Especially at a party like this, so to have something this risky... she really did not know. Yet, she was curious. To have this unnervingly polite and self-deprecating man to offer this... with the smell of sea salt still in the air. She felt entranced as if she couldn't refuse the offer. So, she nodded, that she too would dine in this dish with him.
Reaching forward, she considered this very... very carefully. One move and she could be ingesting an extremely hot pepper. Something that could potentially break her vow of silence. No, she had to trust in fate to deliver her from that. So, leaving it up to fate, she reached forward and grabbed the piece from Black 31. Hopefully, this wouldn't be horrible.
Meanwhile, Clair saw a bunch of fish in front of her. The Meowstic lost all poise and instantly lunged forward to 22 Black to take a piece for herself. Incredibly rude, if you'd ask anyone, but when did cats care about if things were rude or not? That wasn't important to them. What was important was that they got what they want, and were overindulged at times. If only... this would go a lot better than what they could see from the actual roulette table...
Allison might very well have looked out of place in a place as fancy-shmancy as Jirachi's Casino, even in the establishment's relatively less fancy-shmancy arcade, between the comparatively shabby clothes and what looked at first glance to be a Shadow Pidove on her shoulder, but Maribel didn't seem to mind such things, showing more curiosity at the sight of the Pidove than anything else She didn't give off so much as the slightest sense of snobbery one might expect from well-dressed people in a place such as this- that simply wasn't her. Maribel nodded politely as Allison introduced herself and Tina, and also as she gave reassurances that Tina was friendly in spite of what the Pidove's coloration might imply to the contrary. "I believe it," Maribel said at once, smiling at the friendly Pidove. "Dad once told me about the time his Scolipede was mistaken for a Shadow Pokémon, when he really isn't, he just has this grey color and the red eyes that make him look the part. And Salazar's really a very kindhearted Pokémon, too. Loves giving rides to people, I always love getting to ride on his back."
"And to add to what Maribel was saying, I get it too- people seem to think I look scary sometimes, but I really don't try to be," put in Trevenant. True enough, as frightening as Trevenant as a species could be by appearances alone, it was clear by his docile demeanor, his childlike mannerisms and tone of voice, just about everything about him, that this one wouldn't harm a Cutiefly.
Maribel nodded, now looking at Allison's Pidove once more. "Honestly, I think Tina looks pretty like that," she said, admiring the Pidove's distinctive plumage- indeed, even on actual Shadow Pokémon, one never really got the sort of distinctive swirling effect in the cool purple and grey colors as what Tina had going for her. "It's nice to meet you both," she smiled.
"Same here," nodded Trevenant.
Nevertheless, Maribel could see that Allison's face fell a little bit upon getting a better look at her. She couldn't help but wonder what that was about, though in the back of her mind, she had a feeling it might just have had to do with how differently they were dressed- Maribel might not judge others in such ways herself, but she was no fool, she knew this was a thing that happened all the same. She decided against approaching such a subject, though, not wanting to possibly drive away a potential new friend, and instead got on the subject of that which constitutes some manner of common ground for most everyone in this world- Pokémon. Already she could tell that they surely had that much in common, the both of them clearly being Trainers. "So, Allison, is Tina your first Pokémon?" Maribel inquired. "Trevenant isn't my first Pokémon, but he's the one I've known the longest. I actually brought a few more of mine as well, if you'd like to see?" she offered.
Now you've used up all your luck
Lyle watched as more and more people came to the roulette table. Good, something that he would enjoy. Seeing them all scramble to raise the odds, raise the stakes as a prayer to lady luck. The first group, a man dressed as a Basara and his Clefairy, placed a rather bold bet on the purple spaces. Next was the couple who came in before him, who politely introduced themselves before talking amongst themselves. They then decided to do a more precise bet, on the purple Wynaut.
"Pleasure to meet you, Diana, Marv," he politely replied with a warm grim. Furrowing his brow, he looked at the outrageously dressed man.
"It is rather rude, to barge in and not introduce yourself. Anyways, you may call me Lyle. Lyle du Pont, at your service," he flashes a grin before looking at the table before him.
With the bets in place, he had to carefully look forward to the results. Manipulation of the game, well that was out of the question. How could he coerce the worst in people if they suspected cheating? No, he would play honestly here... and slowly watch as they slipped. The boisterous man, especially, was absolutely dripping in guilt.
"I will place my bets on Orange Skitty," he states with cool confidence. If he was to keep up appearances, he needed to be himself. He could feel some not being trusting of him, but that soon would change.
With the bets placed, the game master spins the wheel. The ball soon drops, and the table watches with excitement as the wheel rolls and rolls. Lyle sipped at his champagne, knowing that this would be the first of many spins. Spinning around and around, until the ball stops in a slot. Green Skitty.
"Looks like I was close, but a color off," he gives off a small chuckle. The people sitting next to him, a young lad and a dashing lady, both reassure him.
"Now now dears, we'll do better next time," he tells the both of them with a wink.
Meanwhile, he watched as a medium-aged businessman collects his winnings, the only one to go in on the green Skitty. Most of the people followed the bold claims from before, and better on purple. The idea of a dawn stone, indeed, was well worth it. Yet, this place dealt in coins, not items.
"Let's go in with the Green Azurill this time, call it a hunch."
This Maribel girl was nice, especially for what Allison had come to otherwise consider the preppy type. The mention of her father's Scolipede oft giving rides caused Allison to crack a small smile, not die to the tale as it related to Tina, but due to the knowledge of her own Venipede, Brainy, resting comfortably in a Pokeball currently affixed to her boot. The Trevenant speaking to her was something that might shock another girl her age, but Allison had enough experience being around her uncle's team to be rather unphased by the odd Ghost, though this one did seem to be far less problematic than what she had become accustomed to.
"Yeah, Tina is something of a similar case for me," Allison's smile grew a bit as she lightly scratched at the Pidove, now half buried in her hair, "She was frequently around my place growing up, probably because I would give her all my stale bread. Was my first catch when my uncle taught me how to throw a Pokeball."
Reaching down to her boot she plucks a different Pokeball, "I'm actually here for a bit of fun with my actual starter! We're looking to make a name for ourselves with a good race-"
The very word prompted an immediate flash from the ball, causing a sizable and very excited Rhyhorn to appear by Allison's side, the sparkling brown variant of the species immediately tucking her head beneath Allison and launching her onto its back in proper riding position, nearly knocking over the air hockey table in the process and causing Tina to fly off and hide atop a nearby arcade game.
"Audelia! Audelia, no!" The girl cried out for a moment before managing to get a proper grip, pulling back on one the Rhyhorn's plates with a bit of force to get the Spikes Pokemon to come to a rather quick halt. Patting Audelia gently she dismounts, "Sorry, we've not had a proper race and Audelia here is a little excited..." Her voice trails off for a moment as she looks about for the now missing Tina.
"...but it looks like there's not anyone available to race at the moment." The statement causes Audelia to slump, her body hitting the ground with a bit of force behind it as Allison finally spots Tina and waves her over, the Pidove happily landing back atop her shoulder and letting out a soft coo.
Green Skitty. Not what anyone present had bet upon, but the man named Lyle had at least bet on Skitty of some sort, so he was close, just not close enough. Neither Diana nor Marv seemed deterred by this- that was the very nature of the game, after all, you win some, you lose some. Marv repeated his bet from before- Blue Wynaut- while Diana, after some thought, bet on Purple Skitty instead.
Lavender seemed wholly unfazed by not winning. Mostly, anyway- a creepy hiss of distinct disappointment seemed to slither out from her unnerving smile, and her unblinking voidlike eyes almost appeared to narrow ever so slightly. Nevertheless, she produced several more Coins, and silently placed another bet on Purple Azurill.
~~~~~

Allison had started to smile at the mention of Keith's Scolipede giving rides on his back, reminded of her own Venipede, and she smiled all the more as she explained that Tina had been a Pokémon she'd known growing up as well, a Pidove who hung around due to the free stale bread, and ended up being her first catch, though was not her actual starter. Maribel smiled at this story. "Trevenant belonged to my mother," she said. "She caught him before I was born. He was like a big brother to me growing up. Then, the Halloween after I became a Trainer, he decided he wanted to join my team instead. He was still a Phantump at the time, so he needed to be traded to evolve, so he got Mom to surprise me with coming along to help him evolve, only for Mom to let him get traded to me instead of back to her." Trevenant nodded, staying silent as he thought back to that day.

Allison then took out a different Poké Ball, beginning to explain that she was here to try and have some fun with her actual starter, but at the word "race", said starter burst free from her ball, a sparkling Shiny Rhyhorn, who, clearly excited at the prospect of a race, actually launched her Trainer onto her back in a proper racing position. The whole spectacle nearly knocked over the air hockey table, and the Pidove flew off to the safety of the top of a nearby arcade game. Allison was able to stop Audelia, as the Rhyhorn was evidently named, by grabbing and pulling back on one of the Rhyhorn's plates. Maribel was visibly impressed by all this as Allison dismounted the Rhyhorn, explaining that they haven't had a proper race in a long time. The news that there wasn't anyone available to race at the moment was not happy news for the Rhyhorn, who slumped rather forcefully to the floor.

"Ohh, I like your Rhyhorn," Maribel smiled. "Heh, my Uncle Gavin would be so jealous, he loves Shiny Pokémon," she chuckled. "I actually have a Rhyhorn of my own, but, well, she's not fond of racing," she admitted. "I actually caught her when I went with my parents to watch a Rhyhorn race in the Kalos region, and one of the riders released his Rhyhorn because she didn't want to race- she very much prefers battling." Maribel's smile, however, widened as she produced a Luxury Ball from her bag. "However," she added, "I have another Pokémon here that would be a lot more comfortable with racing, and we'd love to go up against you and Audelia."

After managing to calm Audelia, Allison listened to Maribel's story of her own Rhyhorn, even if the initial mention that said Pokemon didn't like to race did cause Audelia yet further disappointment. Gently rubbing Audelia's side to calm her, Allison thinks back for a moment on the story, swearing that it sounded familiar as Maribel was telling it.

"Oh!" She practically shouted as she suddenly remembered something, "Yeah, I think I read about that in the paper a bit back! The racer got disqualified due to poor sportsmanship, right?" Her love of the sport began to shine through her previously upset demeanor, no longer caring about being out of place at the casino, "Ended up with a lifetime ban from a major track, too. And of course that meant nobody would hire him, since he couldn't earn enough points to place well off just other tracks in the circuit alone."

At this point Allison was in full rant mode, her brain having completely blocked out near everything Maribel had said after the inciting words that got her running, and likely would have continued to voice her opinions on the matter had Audelia not been actually listening. The Rhyhorn was more than happy enough to give her trainer a quick nudge, knocking her off balance somewhat to snap her out of her rant before motioning to the Luxury Ball Maribel now held in her own hand.

"Oh, a race! Yes, yes, please!" The girl was practically giddy at this point as she began listing off potential options, "It looks like there are two tracks here, one that's a clear path and one that's got some debris. Audelia wouldn't be bothered with either so it's up to you. And the tracks are a bit shorter than usual Rhyhorn racing tracks, so we might need to do more than a single lap." Her hands motioned about circularly as if pointing out the sizable difference between a standard Rapidash track such as the one here and the much more vast Rhyhorn tracks one would typically see in Kalos, "And of course we'd have to decide on any other rulesets. They do vary anywhere from the officially sanctioned racing rules that prohibit anything more than light bumping all the way down to street rules where pretty much anything goes as long as you aren't, you know, purposefully hurting anyone."

It was beginning to become incredibly clear that Allison had no intent on ceasing to speak on the matter unless interrupted, even with the fact that stopping her ramble would mean actually getting to race.
