Missingno. Master: At Meowth’s reminder to get moving, you recall your Pokémon and dart over to the last remaining Lapras, scrambling up onto its back with Sunfire at your heels. The Ponyta barely manages to leap aboard before the Lapras pushes off, chasing after the rest of its pod in an effort to put distance between itself and the erupting volcano.

The Lapras makes relatively good time, the island shrinking slowly behind you as you watch even more ash billow out of Mt. Pele. Gray clouds cover most of the sides of the mountain and it rolls further onward as you watch, rapidly reaching the base and spreading out like ink. Splashing in the water heralds Gold and Aquarius’ return from helping the villagers evacuate and your two Water-types easily keep pace as the Lapras continues to hurry away into open ocean.

For a few moments, you think yourself successful: you’ve evacuated the entire village, humans, Pokémon, and all, and before Celebi’s deadline even! But a surprised cry from the Pokémon ahead of you has you spinning around. The foremost Wailord and Lapras seem to be floundering in the water, briefly dipping down before rising higher than before as a strong wave disrupts their forward momentum. Some of the villagers fall over as the abrupt shift causes them to lose their balance, though, thankfully, none of them end up in the water.

Shortly after, you feel your stomach swoop as the wave reaches your ride, dropping you low and then lifting you high on its way to the island. You turn to watch the wave hit the beach and it slams into the rapidly-moving cloud of ash with a cacophony of hissing pops and cracks. The cloud of ash rolls over the wave and continues onward, chasing after you and the escaping villagers with a vengeance.

You glance between the approaching ash cloud and the evacuating villagers; you didn’t think the ash could reach them this far out (and over water) but the cloud races ever closer. Celebi hasn’t come to pick you up yet, so you must still have some time.

What will you do?

Everyone was on board with the evacuation, everyone was on track to get off the island in a timely fashion. There was nothing to it now but a straight shot to the Lapras, and so they moved. Sunfire was the last on board, and only just barely made it before Lapras got moving. And was Lapras ever moving! Keith couldn't help but turn back and watch as best he could, watch even more ash billow out of Mt. Pele. The grey clouds were growing, covering most of the mountain and spreading even further. "Man," he remarked. "Not a moment too soon, huh?"

"Tentacruuuuel."

"Feraligatooooor!"

Keith chuckled, turning to look, seeing his Tentacruel and Feraligatr swimming alongside. "Aquarius! Gold!" he smiled. "You two did great, I'm proud of you both."

"Tenta," Aquarius responded modestly.

"Gatooor!" Gold added jovially.

Keith chuckled a little more, though this chuckle was short-lived as a surprised cry came from the Pokémon ahead. He turned to look, and saw that the Lapras and Wailord furthest ahead seemed to be floundering. Dipping down, then rising higher than before, the result of a strong wave. Keith held his breath, but exhaled in relief as he saw hat none of the villagers ended up in the water as a result of this. He then, however, had to brace himself, for that wave was coming right their way! Were this not such a perilous situation, he'd have found the sensation quite exciting and enjoyable, but right now, he had bigger concerns.

"Whoa," breathed Meowth. He, too, was watching, just as the wave hit the beach and collided with the cloud of ash, creating a great chorus of crackling sounds. But to both his and Keith's shock and surprise, this did not stop the ash! The cloud rolled right over the wave and kept going! Right towards them!

"...You gotta be kidding me," Keith said flatly. "Friggin' over the water? How the..."

"Yeah, well, neva mind da how, cuz it's happenin' one way or the otha!" Meowth stated. "Da question is, wat do we do about it?"

"Yeah, true," Keith nodded. "It's catching up, too, we gotta do something." He thought fast. Acid Downpour might bring it to a stop, but he shoved that idea away almost immediately- it'd also have the almost certainly undesirable effect of dumping all that horrible poison right into the sea. Yeah, no. But what else could he or any of his currently present Pokémon even hope to do against this sort of-

"TENTACRUUUEL!"

"FERALIGATOOOOR!"

Keith was snapped out of his frantic thinking as he saw his pair of Water-types swimming out in the direction of the ash cloud. The Tentacruel and Feraligatr exchanged looks and nods- they had promised Lapras that they would do all they could to protect them from these natural disasters, and now the time had come to make good on that promise. They then both looked back at Keith, and were pleased to see an understanding grin on his face- he might not have known about the promise, but he could tell they were looking to help stop the oncoming ash cloud, and that much he was on board with all the way. "Let's try it, then, guys," he stated. "That wave might not have been a match for the ash, but I've seen you guys cook up bigger and better before! Double Surf attack! Stop that cloud of ash before it gets any closer!" And as the Water-types set to work, trying to create bigger and taller waves (waves that would head away from the evacuating people and Pokémon from the start, and therefore not causing an even worse repeat of what they'd all just gone through- nice little added bonus there), Keith turned to Meowth. "I'm pretty sure this'll work," he muttered. "But in case it doesn't, we'd be stupid to not have a plan B. I don't know if your Guardian Terrain could keep the ash at bay, and I pray we don't need to find out, but if it comes to that..."

Meowth nodded. "...den I'll give it everyting I gots," he promised.

Keith, meanwhile, was not the only one with a contingency plan in mind in case the double Surf didn't do the trick- Aquarius figured her Barrier move might be handy for this, creating a wall of energy to hold the ash at bay while everyone escaped with their lives and their health, while Gold's backup plan was to see if a good Hydro Pump right into the cloud might break it up somewhat.

Missingno. Master: While you frantically wrack your brain for ideas, Gold and Aquarius take the initiative, swimming out to meet the ash cloud racing out on the water. You catch on and order them both to use Surf, hoping that a bigger wave will sink the ash. In the meantime, you and Meowth, Gold, and Aquarius all prepare back up plans in case the Surf doesn’t work.

Your two Water-types gather water together, pulling as much as they possibly can, to form an almost literal wall between the escaping pod and the ash cloud. You watch the ash barrel down on you as Gold and Aquarius strain to pull even more from your surroundings, before they release the wave with a gasp. The wall of water rolls back towards the ash cloud, beginning to crest as it looms over the billowing mass of gray.

And then…it freezes in place, an echoing stillness abruptly registering to your senses. No waves, no wind; the volcano has gone silent and the ash cloud looks like someone pressed pause. It wasn’t that long ago that something similar happened to you, so you know what this is and what it means: your time here is done and it’s time to go home.

Celebi flies into view, looking rueful as it surveys the villagers and the pods arrayed behind you. Well, you’ve definitely given them more of a chance than they’d had before, it tells you, but it can’t let you stay any longer; knowing you, you’d get yourself killed and you’re really not supposed to die here. You’ve got family to get back to, it teases, dropping down to your height with a wink and a grin.

Celebi offers you its hand with a flourish, but Sunfire speaks up for the first time in a while. She tips her head to look at you and quietly asks if you’re leaving now. She glances back at the rest of her village and then her burning island and says she’s only known you maybe a day so is it odd that she thinks that she’ll miss you? She paws at the Lapras shell below her and ducks her head.

Celebi tilts its head, peering curiously at Sunfire, before turning back to you with the impression of raised eyebrows. What will you do?

Keith watched, holding his breath, as Gold and Aquarius worked on sinking the ash cloud with a wave of their own. They built it up... they built it up even more... and then they released it... and then everything was paused, causing Keith to release his held breath in some freaky hybrid between a groan of exasperation and a chuckle, the latter due to knowing why everything had suddenly froze in time, and knowing it had surely been coming.

Indeed, Celebi came into view, Keith nodding as the Mythical Pokémon explained that while he'd certainly given the villagers more of a fighting chance at survival, it really couldn't let him stay any longer- he really wasn't meant to die in this time period, and knowing him and his sometimes reckless ways, staying here long enough, he might just get himself killed. Keith opened his mouth to rebut this, but Meowth spoke over him. "In da past twenty-four hours or so, youse climbed a volcano dat was due to erupt wit the intent o' tellin' a literal volcano god ta cool it, tried ta fight her when youse thought dat was the only way ta stop the eruption, and when offered a way home, instead pleaded fer a chance ta get da villagers ta safety," stated Meowth. "Don't get me wrong, yer nuttin' short of a hero at dis point, but Celebi's got a point."

"...that's a fair point, Meowth," Keith conceded. "And yeah, Celebi's right- probably best that I don't die in the past, huh? Too much to live for in the present."

"Damn straight," Meowth purred in agreement.

Celebi offered its hand with a flourish, but before Keith could take it, Sunfire spoke up for the first time in a while. "Hm?" Keith murmured.

"She's askin' if yer leavin' now," Meowth murmured, his tone of voice suggesting he had a good idea as to what was next. "She's askin- she's only known youse fer about a day, so is it odd dat she tinks she'll miss youse?" He didn't even look at Keith and he knew that look. He could already feel that look. That gleam in his eye. Why was he able to friggin' feel it by now?

Sure enough, Keith gestured for Celebi to hold on for just a moment- he had just one more thing to take care of before they went back, and if he was being honest with himself, it didn't really come as too much of a surprise. He first took a few Poké Balls off his belt and withdrew his suitably surprised Tentacruel and Feraligatr (it wouldn't do to accidentally leave them behind), then took another Poké Ball (the ninth out of a set of ten) out of his backpack and held it out to Sunfire. "Nah, I don't think it's odd," he smiled. "And yeah, I'm gonna be leaving now- I came from a different time, and I gotta get back. And honestly? I think I'd miss you, too. So, if you like, Sunfire, you can come with us," he offered, still holding out the Poké Ball invitingly.

*Keith used Poké Ball!*

The bright light fades, revealing a Mega Houndoom, who flinches back as the rocks begin to enTomb it.

"Houndoom, Hyper Beam!" the vandal yells as Vi dashes forward, your Blaziken preparing her next attack. Unfortunately, the vandal's order catches her off guard, the Hyper Beam striking her directly in the chest. The attack sends her sliding backwards and when it cuts out, she falls to one knee, panting for breath. Thankfully, Rengar bursts out of the ground at that exact moment, slamming into the Mega Houndoom and bringing the Combat in Close to give Vi a chance to catch her breath.

"Oh, no, you don't," the vandal says darkly as Rengar finishes his blows. "Houndoom, Counter."

Rengar's eyes widen, but he doesn't get a chance to dodge before all the power he'd just slammed into the Mega Houndoom comes rebounding right back at him. Your Zangoose is thrown back towards your side of the field, hitting the ground and rolling to a stop not far from where you are. Still, he struggles to get back to his feet for several beats and then finally slumps to the ground.

Rengar is unable to battle.

"Hah! Take that!" the vandal yells from across the field, clearly not noticing Vi getting to her feet in a sudden Blaze of temper. Your Blaziken throws herself across the field, Uppercuting the Mega Houndoom into the Sky in revenge for putting Rengar out. The vandal and his Houndoom both yelp, one in surprise, the other in pain.

"What the--it's still up?!" The vandal shakes his head. "Well, we'll solve that shortly."

Both Mega Houndoom and Vi pant as they wait for their next set of orders, both looking worse for wear. Mega Houndoom winces in the bright sunlight, looking a little...sickly? You squint at it. Did Rengar actually manage to Poison it earlier or was this its Ability kicking in? Either way, the next round was sure to end this battle, one way or another.

How do you plan to finish this?

(Declared: Seviper, Druddigon, Eelektross, Blaziken, Zangoose)
One Fire Pokemon down, one to go! Unfortunately, now was the time this rich kid showed off his magic bling to power up his Houndoom, Mega Evolving it and making it much more dangerous to deal with! Still, without the Magcargo and its more widespread attacks making everything dangerous, Rengar was free to start Digging into the ground without fear of getting attacked. By the time Houndoom had finished Mega Evolving, there were already Rocks falling down on it, ready to bury and Entomb it, lowering its Speed while Vi went in for her second attack. "Houndoom, Hyper Beam!" Hyrem hears that just as Mega Houndoom unleashes a beam of light, striking Vi straight in the chest and cancelling her attack. Thankfully, Mega Houndoom had to catch its breath as well, but it wouldn't be long before Vi would get taken advantage of... Enter Rengar and his surprise attack, getting in Close to Mega Houndoom to Combat things his way, but the vandal was having none of it. "Oh, no, you don't. Houndoom, Counter."

"Oh no, Rengar, look out!" Hyrem warned, but it was too late. While Mega Houndoom took a very good amount of damage from the attack, it soon parried the last few strikes and returned the damage right back onto the Zangoose twofold, the lowered Defense and Special Defense from Rengar's earlier attack not helping things in the slightest. Sent flying and careening straight over to Hyrem, Rengar tried multiple times to get back up but was unsuccessful as consciousness faded from him. "Hah! Take that!" cheered the vandal while Hyrem called Rengar back into his Pokeball. "Crap, I didn't think Houndoom would be able to use Counter, we better be careful of that...Vi?" He suddenly saw his Blaziken rise up in a Blaze of fury before dashing to the opposite side of the field, her fist finding Mega Houndoom's cheek and sending it careening into the air with her Sky Uppercut, catching both it and the vandal off guard. "What the--it's still up?! Well, we'll solve that shortly..."

Both Pokemon seemed like they were on their last legs, but the Mega Evolution threatened to be too much for Hyrem and Vi! That was until Hyrem noticed Mega Houndoom was actively suffering...from being in the sunlight? "Wait...that's odd, what's going on with Mega Houndoom?" he asked himself as he consulted the Pokedex:

Mega Houndoom's internal heat is more intense than a regular Houndoom can handle, causing stress to its body. Its ability changes to Solar Power, allowing it to deal more damage with its special attacks while exposed to harsh sunlight, at the cost of some of its health the longer it stays exposed to such weather.

"What? That's such a risk!" he said out loud. Seems fitting that he uses this Mega so recklessly... wait, that also means it can't have Flash Fire as its ability either, meaning we can use Fire attacks on it! Maybe even... He looked toward one of the accessories he had on him, the Z-Ring. Vi did have a Firium Z-Crystal attuned to her, and a Z-Move would be just the thing to finish this battle! All he needed to do was...

A stray glance toward the Larvesta, Solaris, and he shook his head. No! he thought. Even if a Z-Move is gonna win the battle for sure, it would cause too much damage to the area. That wouldn't make me any better than the vandals Solaris wants me to stop! There's gotta be another way... "Okay Vi...let's see if we can finish this up! Sand Attack to distract it, then go into a combo: Low Sweep into a Seismic Toss! Watch for any attempts at Counter attacks, and we can win this!" Between the Fighting-type moves and the damage Mega Houndoom would be sustaining itself while the sunlight was active, Vi could definitely bring it down...if she stayed up through the powerful attacks coming her way, that is...

Missingno. Master: Celebi grins and gives you some space as you return Aquarius and Gold before turning to Sunfire and offering her a Pokéball. You reassure her and admit that you’ll probably miss her too, so why doesn’t she join you? Sunfire rears back in surprise, glancing from you to Celebi and asking if that’s even allowed. Celebi shrugs and says it won’t break anything if she decides to go, but there’s no guarantee she’ll survive if she stays. Either way, she would basically be starting from almost nothing, so it’s really up to her.

Sunfire shifts her weight for a moment, glancing at her island, her village, and you, before she nods to herself and knocks her nose against the Pokéball. The Pokéball rocks once as she disappears into it and then a second time. With a click, it stills.

You caught a Lv. 14 female Ponyta! She has access to any moves used during the race, in addition to her normal level up moves.

Once you’ve tucked away your new team member, Celebi drifts closer and holds its hand out once again, telling you it’s time to go. This time, you grab it and your surroundings warp, lights and colors shifting and twisting until the sight makes you nauseous. You close your eyes, hoping that will help with the nausea, and, some indeterminable time later, you begin to register the low murmur of annoyed voices.

Opening your eyes, you find yourself back in the dimly-lit interior of a building, looking at the back of a crowd of people trying to squeeze its way out of the door. A glance around proves that Celebi did bring you back to the older, worn-out version of Pele’s temple, right where it took you from: in front of the exhibit with the red-orange-gold necklace bearing a small coin-shaped pendant. An exhibit that now looks familiar.

You take a few moments to consider the exhibit before a ranger ushers you towards the exit with the rest of the few remaining visitors. You exit the temple and find yourself squinting as you emerge into bright afternoon sunlight, a far cry from the early dawn and ash-cloud skies you had been dealing with just minutes prior.

Now that you’re back in your proper time, isn't there something Pele asked you to do?

~!~

Gemini Spark: As the vandal’s Mega Houndoom struggles back to its feet, you pull out your Pokédex to figure out why a Fire-type would be suffering under sunlight. Upon determining that the Mega Houndoom can’t have Flash Fire for its ability, you briefly consider dropping an Inferno Overdrive on it, but a glance at Solaris reminds you why the Larvesta asked for your help in the first place. Thankfully, Solaris seems to have no complaints with the situation, especially now that there’s no rain falling on his head.

Turning back to the battle, you give Vi her hopefully-last set of orders as the vandal yells out to his Mega Houndoom, “Solar Beam again!”

Vi sucks in a breath and darts to the side, wincing as the Beam of Solar energy scrapes past her, before abruptly changing directions. She closes in on the Mega Houndoom, who attempts to catch her in its Crunching jaws, but she kicks up some dirt in an Attack that only gives it a face full of Sand. Mega Houndoom rears back in surprise and pain, letting Vi duck Low so she can Sweep it off its feet.

“No!” the vandal screams, clearly seeing his defeat approach as Vi catches his Houndoom in midair. “Houndoom, Reversal! Overheat! Do something!”

Before Mega Houndoom has a chance to reorient itself or even attempt to fight back, Vi flips the Mega Houndoom onto its back and Tosses it into the ground, the impact briefly causing Seismic shakes as Vi stands above it, panting heavily. Amidst the cloud of dust from the impact, a bright glow flashes briefly before dimming, the vandal’s Mega Stone going dull.

— Rengar gains 2 levels and Vi gains 3. –

“No!” The vandal stomps his foot. “There’s no way!” He points across the battlefield at you as a faint rhythmic beat reaches your ears. “There’s no way a Mega got beat by two ordinary Pokémon!”

You can’t help exchanging glances with Solaris and Vi. Is the guy really throwing a tantrum about losing? Considering he continues in the same vein for a while, he apparently is. Thankfully, he shuts up as a helicopter comes into view, though his growing triumphant expression doesn’t bode well for you.

“You’re in for it now!” he yells as the helicopter comes in to land, Solaris squinting suspiciously at the vehicle as the Larvesta heads in your direction.

The helicopter sets down gently some distance from the pair of you and two men disembark. One is dressed rather casually, though something about his clothes gives off the impression that he has a lot of money. The other…seems to be a tired-looking official, likely associated with some kind of park ranger organization given his uniform. As the pair approach, you realize that the possibly-rich guy looks like he might be a relative of the vandal, a conclusion that’s confirmed as the vandal hurries to catch him before the pair reach you.

When they get into earshot, you catch the tail end of the vandal’s explanation, which seems to paint you as the villain and the vandal himself as a victim. The ranger official surveys the damage and his expression manages to get even more tired, if that’s possible, as he probably calculates how much it would cost to return the environment to its original state and how long it would take.

The rich man nods along as the vandal wraps up his explanation before taking a moment to survey your surroundings. He then turns to you and raises an eyebrow. “Would you care to explain your side of the story?” He raises a hand to cut the vandal off as the vandal attempts to protest. “My son says you’re to blame for the damage here, but if I’m not mistaken, that’s a Larvesta from the local colony accompanying you. The park rangers have mentioned that the Larvesta and Volcarona have been getting more and more irritated with the vandalism their territory has been receiving, so I doubt one would be accompanying you if you were the cause.”

What do you say?

Sunfire was more than a little surprised by Keith's request, and in a move Keith should perhaps had made initially, the Fire-type inquired to Celebi as to whether this was even allowed. But Celebi had no objections, stating that Sunfire leaving wouldn't break anything in the timeline, and reminding the Ponyta that there's no guarantee of survival if she stays in this time- considering she'd be starting from pretty much square one in either scenario, the choice was hers. And following this, the Ponyta took a moment to consider. Keith couldn't blame her- this was, after all, one hell of a decision to make, perhaps one that had put the Ponyta on the spot. Ultimately, however, she gave a nod, seemingly to herself, and nudged the Poké Ball with her nose. The sphere split open, and Sunfire turned to a shapeless mass of energy that was sucked inside, whereupon the sphere slammed shut and wobbled in Keith's hand. Not very hard, and not for very long- the telltale click came quickly, and Keith grinned widely. "Oy," sighed Meowth. "Yer gonna do da ting?"

"It'd make more sense to do the thing now as opposed to after the time travel," Keith shrugged. And with that, he held the ball up high. "All right!" he exclaimed. "I just caught... a Ponyta!"

"Meowth, dat's right!" Meowth chimed in.

With all that said and done, and the Poké Ball containing Keith's new Ponyta had been safely tucked away, Celebi held out its hand once more. And this time, Keith didn't hesitate to take it, with Meowth clinging to his shoulder as though for dear life. Their surroundings warped at once, shifting and twisting in a mass of lights and colors that even almost made Keith nauseous. Meowth had to slam his eyes shut almost right away, but Keith took a moment or two before he figured he had better do so as well- he was notoriously hard to nauseate with such things like this.

And soon, Keith's eyes flew back open at the sound, the dull rumble of various annoyed voices. And he and Meowth shared a simultaneous sigh of relief- they were back in their own time. Right back where they'd been when Celebi had taken them, in Pele's temple, in the old, worn-out version of the place they'd first come across when coming here in the first place. While a new and strange sight to them upon arrival, it was now almost endearingly familiar, though Keith couldn't help but wonder... had his efforts been successful? He wasn't able to stick around long enough to even know if the double Surf had done what the natural wave could not to the billowing ash cloud...

Before he could consider all of this for too long, a ranger ushered Keith towards the exit with the rest of the visitors. This snapped Keith out of it and he filed out of the place along with the others, squinting as he stepped into the bright afternoon sunlight, a stark contrast from what they'd just come from.

"Man," Meowth sighed in relief. "Dat was an ordeal."

"For sure," Keith agreed. "But y'know what, that was a fun ordeal," he added. "I mean, OK, yeah, working on a strict time limit to help facilitate an island-wide evacuation, that was more than a little stressful, but the festival, that was a once-in-a-lifetime experience," he smiled. "And speaking of which, Meowth, I can't quite thank you enough," he added with yet another smile. "All the translating you did for me and the villagers, I don't know how things could have possibly gone as smoothly as they did if it hadn't been for you."

"Ehh, tink nuttin' of it," Meowth purred modestly. "I was glad ta help, ya know? Though dat don't mean I ain't glad it's ova," he added.

"I'll agree with you there," Keith nodded.

"So... let's go home, huh?" Meowth asked.

But Keith shook his head. "Not just yet, Meowth," he stated. "Remember what Pele said, just before Celebi took us back to give us a chance to evacuate the villagers?"

"...Oh, yeah, dat's right," Meowth nodded after a moment.

Keith nodded as well. "Pele wanted us to go see her when we returned to our time," he stated. "I see no reason to refuse." And with that, he started off, walking in the direction of Mt. Pele.

All right! Ponyta was caught!
OOC: Claiming my new Normal Form Ponyta, declaring her Ability to be Flash Fire, and in a move I'm sure we all saw coming, confirming that her nickname is to be Sunfire. Also listing, for the record, that the moves she used during the race were Quick Attack, Agility, Bounce, and Take Down, three of which she would not already have by simply leveling up at level 14.

Missingno. Master: Now safely back in your own time, you recall Pele’s request to see her and head towards the volcano. The landscape has definitely changed some from the eruption, the valley much shallower than in the past and the volcano itself a different shape. In fact, it seems like part of the volcano may have…either blown out or collapsed in at some point in the last…however long it was between your trip to the past and now. At least the weather’s nice, warm without being too hot, a gentle sea breeze, and bright blue skies.

You eventually reach the base of Mt. Pele and follow a trail whose sign says it leads to the peak. It’s different from the one you took in the past, but that’s probably to be expected and it gives you another view of the island as you hike up it. You pass other hikers and rangers as you climb, exchanging nods and/or brief greetings as you go, until you reach an approximate halfway point.

You pause there for a few moments, just to take in the sights or to catch your breath, before Meowth abruptly recalls that you brought back more than just Sunfire from the past. Since you’re taking a break anyway, you pull out the items you grabbed at the race and give them a closer look. One is obviously a Fire Stone and the shards turn out to be a pair of Red, a Gold, a Yellow, and a White. The TM turns out to be TM Fissure. You’re still a bit baffled as to how a TM ended up in the time period you were in, but it seems to register as a properly-working TM, so all you really have is speculation. Then again, it’s possible Celebi was involved, which could explain that all nicely. When you’ve finished examining your spoils, and possibly lamenting that you’ll never find out whether the Fire Stone or TM would have been good enough prizes for the teens of the village, you continue heading up to the peak.

By the time you reach the peak, the sun is starting to fall in the sky, afternoon slowly giving way to evening. It’s much cooler now than it was the last time you were here, but the mass of Larvesta and Volcarona remain the same. The Pokémon don’t bother to part for you this time, only shifting out of your way as you once again approach the pink Volcarona.

Pele looks much less haughty this time when she appears, ‘sitting’ cross-legged above her physical form with her hair braided and shoulders loose. She smiles at you. “Traveler.” Her voice is calm and very human, no hint at all of who and what she is. “I’d wondered if I might see you again. I’m very glad you decided to grant my request.” She tilts her head, smile going wry. “It would have been poor repayment if all I ever gave you was a mark of my favor and little else.”

She draws herself up a little, her voice shifting into a more official-sounding tone. “Speaking of, the favor should grant you safe passage among the native people of Cortoza. The heat and fires of my volcano will also leave you be, aside from the marks you once saw on my people.” She motions for you to hold out the necklace and pendant and makes a gesture over the favor. “I have imbued the favor such that you may teach one of your Pokémon Lava Plume should you so choose, and you need not fear that the favor should crumble; it would take far more than a simple eruption to damage it.”

She then pauses and considers you for a moment, tapping at her chin before nodding to herself. “If I may?” She gestures at your Pokéballs. “I would bless your companions for their experience and composure while assisting you during your time two hundred years past.”

— Meowth gains 4 levels; Kyle gains 3; Aquarius, Gold, and Malfoy gain 2 levels each; and Rubeus gains 1 level. –

“I’m told you may exchange the shards for cash, if you wish. They would be worth approximately $500 to the archaeologists who manage the old temple.” She nods once again when she’s finished and relaxes. “I believe I have given all I have wished to give, when it comes to boons. However, I would not be surprised if you have further questions.”

Do you have any further questions for Pele?

As Keith began the trek back towards Mt. Pele, he marveled at how different everything looked compared to before the eruption. The valley was much more shallow. The volcano itself was in a different shape, with part of it looking as though it might have blown out or collapsed in. "Wow," Keith murmured.

"Well, a lot o' time's passed, includin', y'know, dat whole volcanic eruption deal," Meowth reminded him. "Stands ta reason a lot's gonna change between den and now."

"Fair enough," Keith agreed. And once they'd reached the base of the mountain, they proceeded up the trail, marked with a sign saying it led to the peak. It was a different trail to what Keith had taken in the past, he noticed right away, but this was not altogether surprising to him. After all- violently erupting volcano, only natural to think that it'd screw with the landscape. Moreover, Keith didn't really mind getting to take a different path up the mountain- it gave him a new view of the island as he climbed, and it was kinda nice to be climbing to the peak in what were decidedly less urgent circumstances.

They had reached what they presumed to be the halfway point, just to take in the sights, and in Keith's case, catch his breath a little, when Meowth piped up. "Ya know, Keith," he stated. "Sunfire ain't the only ting youse brought back from da past."

"What- oh, yeah, the stuff from the race!" Keith grinned, digging into his backpack. "Heh, I'd almost forgotten! Let's get a good look at all of this," he stated. The Fire Stone was pretty obvious. The Shards were a decent variety- two Red, and one of each of Gold, Yellow, and White. And the Technical Machine turned out to be one that taught Fissure. "I still don't know how a TM for Fissure- or any TM at all, for that matter- ended up that far in the past," Keith stated.

"Well, we know dat one o' da Celebi- or maybe dey's da same one and da first one's just a younger version- whicheva," Meowth shook his head. "Point bein', Celebi's clearly been screwin' around wit time travel in dat time period, so maybe dat's got sometin' ta do wit it."

"I could see that," Keith nodded. "Heh. I certainly didn't think I was gonna get to see Celebi again," he chuckled. "Kinda wish I had brought Pomona- now that she knows the truth about where and when she came from, I'm thinking she might have liked to meet Celebi properly. Didn't get much of a chance the first time."

"Makes sense ta me-owth," purred Meowth. "Honestly, much as I'm glad we's back in our own time, I kinda would'a liked ta know if dat Fire Stone or TM would'a been good enough treasure fer dose teens in da village," he added.

"An excellent question, for sure," Keith nodded. "Sadly, we may never know... Alright, Meowth, what say we keep going?" he added.

"I'm cool wit dat," Meowth nodded, and Keith continued the uphill trek.

The sun had begun to set by the time they reached the peak. The temperature was much cooler this time around, but the masses of Larvesta and Volcarona remained. They did not part to let Keith past, but merely shifted their positions as necessary, for Keith had seen one Volcarona in particular, and knew to head that way- towards the pink one.

And there she was, "sitting", for lack of a better term, atop her physical form. She looked far less haughty, and her tone of voice as she addressed Keith sounded far more human. Keith smiled at Pele's words. "It's good to see you again, Pele," Keith said in response. Pele then went on to state that it would be poor repayment indeed if all she'd left Keith with was a mere token of her favor and nothing else. She then drew herself up a bit, and with a more official-sounding tone of voice, added that the favor in question would grant Keith safe passage among the Cortozan natives, and keep him safe from the heat and fires of Mt. Pele, with the exception of the marks that Keith had once seen on the villagers. She then motioned for Keith to hold out the pendant, which he did with no hesitation, and Pele made a gesture over it, explaining that in doing so, she gave it the power to teach Lava Plume to a single Pokémon. Keith was quite impressed, and smiled as he was reassured that the favor would not crumble. "Thank you very much," Keith said respectfully.

But Pele didn't stop there, either- she gestured to Keith's Poké Balls, expressing a desire to bless his companions for the help they were to him. Meowth sort of jolted in place as he felt this power, and Keith knew Meowth hadn't been the only one of his Pokémon to level up just now. And finally, she stated that Keith could, if he so chose, exchange the shards for cash from the archaeologists who managed the old temple. That, she stated, was all she intended to give as far as boons, but she expressed certainty that Keith very likely had further questions.

Indeed, Keith gave a nod in response. "In fact, I do," he stated. "I... I was sent back to my own time before I could be reasonably sure just how well my efforts to save your people worked," he explained. "Did... did they all survive?" His mind was still, in particular, on that billowing cloud of ash and the infuriating cliffhanger he'd been left on regarding whether his Water-types had been able to fend it off. He knew he had done well, and the fact that there were still Cortozan natives living on the island to this day clued him in to the notion that surely his efforts couldn't have been completely in vain, but he still couldn't help but wonder. They had all been so good to him, he hated the thought that his efforts to return the favor might not have worked as well as he had intended.

Missingno. Master: Her expression softens at your single question. “Of course,” she says to herself softly. “As far as I am aware, the villagers you helped did survive the pyroclastic flows, though the Lapras who stayed behind to ferry you floundered briefly before he managed to catch up with his pod. Once the major eruptions ceased, I lost track of them myself as I passed the next hundred or so years asleep, recovering and regaining my strength.”

She paused for a moment and thought back. “I know Ieni survived, though there were moments where he struggled fiercely as one of only a handful of living creatures who remained on Cortoza. Once he managed to hail some Wingull, the rest of his village came back to retrieve him before they left to wherever they waited out the aftershocks and smaller eruptions.”

She paused again, but shook her head. “That is all I can recall of the village you helped in the aftermath of your leave-taking.” She hesitates and turns toward the setting sun, voice turning solemn. “And I would also thank you. I understand your actions were your own, but even in the rhythm of a dance, sometimes more than one movement may be appropriate to the song the dancer chose.” She sighs and clarifies after a beat, “I’m sure whatever you would have chosen, would not have broken anything, but I was glad for the almost-certainty that at least one village survived.”

She grins mischievously and glances at you out of the corner of her eye. “However, I would not be surprised if some of the villagers who eventually returned tell stories of a man with a hat that no one could understand who helped save one of the villages from the volcanoes’ wrath. And who knows?” She shrugged lightly. “Perhaps one day, should you return, you might come across one of those villagers and hear the tale of how you saved a village for yourself.”

And with that, I’m finally wrapping this adventure up. Thank you so much, MM, for sticking with me over these last few years, especially through all those months-long gaps between updates and I really hope you enjoyed this adventure.

Pele's expression had softened at Keith's question, and she was happy to answer as best she could- to the best of her knowledge, the villagers Keith helped did survive. The Lapras Keith had been riding had floundered briefly, but ultimately got through safely as well. And then, of course, Pele had lost track once the major eruptions had stopped, due to her need to spend the next hundred years or so asleep to regain her strength. Fair enough, Keith had to admit. She then spoke up, stating that she knew for certain that Ieni at least survived, though not without difficulty. Nevertheless, he'd been able to hail some passing Wingull, and the villagers had come back to retrieve him. Keith was relieved to hear of that much, at least- it seems his efforts had well and truly paid off after all. The villagers had survived the eruption, even coming back for Ieni, and had gone somewhere else to wait out the aftershocks and minor eruptions.

Pele could not recall anything beyond that, though thanked Keith for what he had done. After that, however, she sported a mischievous grin and spoke to Keith again, stating that it would not surprise her if some of the returning villagers possibly passed on the story of a man with a hat who nobody could understand who helped to save one of the villages from the volcanoes' wrath. Keith couldn't help but grin at this possibility, moreso at the thought of someday returning and hearing for himself a villager telling him the tale of what he himself just went through.

There was little more to say at this point. Keith once again thanked Pele for everything, and stated that he would very much like to return someday, and that he'd be highly amused if he was ever told his own story by a Cortozan native his next time here. After any and all goodbyes were said, Keith headed back down the mountain, and at long last prepared to head home.

"We's totally comin' back someday, ain't we?" Meowth asked Keith, sounding half-exasperated, half-amused. By this point, the two of them were riding on Aquarius once more, the Tentacruel assuring them she had more than enough energy to get them back to the Fizzytopian mainland.

"If I have any say in it, Meowth, definitely," Keith grinned. "This was way more than I'd bargained for, but all things considered, absolutely in a good way."

"Can't say I'd argue wit dat," Meowth shrugged. "Though youse just wants ta hear some native tell youse some epic tale about yerself, don't ya?" he added with a smirk.

"Don't tell me that wouldn't be awesome," Keith chuckled. "Friggin' time travel... Well, I'll say this, Meowth- we got one hell of a story to tell the others when we get back."

"Can I ask a favor, though?" Meowth asked. "Can it be youse doin' most o' da tellin'? I kinda wanna give my voice a rest."

Keith chuckled. "It's the least I can do, Meowth," he agreed. And with that established, they continued on their way back home.

*Adventure complete*

Thanks, myahoo! I enjoyed the adventure immensely from start to finish, I'm very glad you kept these adventures going even after the Fizzbylution, and even with those months-long gaps, I for one thought it was all worth the wait.
