Raid Boss Swampert
★★★★

Health gauge: 0%
Shields Up: 0
Status: KO
KO Count: 3.

Raid Challengers

MM, Flapple: 300 HP
LBC, Petilil: 234 HP {Miracle Seed (+2 to Grass moves)}
grassyglide, Dartrix: 344 HP [Dynamaxed: 2 Turns Remaining]{Miracle Seed (+2 to Grass moves)}
Median Dia, Oranguru: 400 HP [Fully recovered]

With one final shield standing, Petilili makes short work of it with a barrage of magical leaves, as the Flapple and Dartrix finish the raid boss off with another Grav Apple and Max Overgrowth as the weight of gravity suddenly lifts with the explosion of dynamax energy from the mud fish as it shrinks to regular size and teeters around, only to be put to bed by a second swirl of leaves as instructed by Oranguru. A couple of seconds pass by, and from behind a mound of soggy mud the Swampert's trainer sheepishly peeks over, clothing sodden from the rainfall save for an already damp patch between the legs, and with absolutely no fanfare whatsoever the reporter recalled the fainted pokemon before immediately turning tail and scarpering with a level of cowardice that would make a Wimpod seem like a Braviary.

The rain however showed no signs of letting up, whether it was forecast or not, and as the last of the media crew retreats, the raiders could collect themselves and give each other a pat on the back...though there could certainly be no good reason to as the large mechanoid lumbered carefully over to the muddied bones with a shovel and wheelbarrow, third meshlike arm clutching a folded white sheet. With no apparent emotion, the machine began to dig the former gym leader's remains from the soil as a considerably smaller robot zipped to the group with four packages between its small limbs.

"On behalf of the Manager, accept these rewards for suppression of the Dynamax Swampert! No fatalities were registered as a result of the battle!" it chimed, with a tinny voice before zooming to the side of the larger machine, apparently the aforementioned manager as a number of clunks indicated the skeleton of Alex had found its way into the cart, the machine draping the remains witt the sheet before solemnly turning and wheeling the barrow past the group, addressing them.

"Until such time as the league confirms the cause of death and the necessary funerary arrangements have been made, the management of the Loch Bygone gym will pass to the current occupiers. The former gym leader's pokemon have been notified, and custodial proceedings and blah blah legal nonsense..." the baritone machine droned before stopping, turning body to the group and staring with their single emerald eye. "...between you and me, it seems this unfortunate soul's been here since before the lake recorded water recession. Unsure how they ended up here anachronistically, but that is what investigation is for. You'd best be on your way, and to not pay heed to what the tabloids say over the next few days." With that, the Manager wheeled the remains of Alex Blackhall towards the shacks, leaving the raiders to ruminate on what cost this battle has tolled.

For their part in defeating the Raid Boss Swampert, the raiders are awarded the following:

  • x40 Watts
  • x1 TR Hydro Pump
  • x2 Passho Berries
  • x1 Shuca Berry
  • +4 levels to participating pokemon, +6 if levels 31-60, +4 candies if level 100.

If Swampert was allowed another shot at attacking them, then surely all was lost. Fortunately, Swampert was not afforded that opportunity, for this final onslaught of moves finished it off, allowing its sheepish Trainer to withdraw it and flee.

This, however, was no time to celebrate. Even with the Swampert out of the picture, even with the last of the media crew fleeing, there was still the primary reason they'd gone there in the first place. Even amid the persistent rain, the Masters family stood and watched as strange robots set to work collecting Alex's remains. Keith found himself taking his hat off as he watched this happen. The smaller robot, however, was less involved with the remains, as it instead approached the group of Trainers. It spoke up with a tinny voice, presenting all present with rewards for their work in stopping the Swampert, and then it said something that elicited a collective sigh of relief- there were no fatalities from the battle. "Oh, thank Xerneas," Willa breathed.

"No fatalities," Keith repeated, putting an arm around his wife. "Everything's OK, right?"

"I... I suppose, then, yes," Willa murmured. "But... how did Gravity's effect extend beyond the battle? That... that doesn't happen..."

"I don't know," Keith said gently.

"Maybe the helicopters were getting too close?" Maribel speculated.

"You know, that could be it, sweetie," Keith murmured, nodding thoughtfully. "Didn't even think of that- they were getting pretty intrusive, weren't they?"

"Yes... and Diana and Marv, back when they worked at Channel 890, they always stayed a bit further back," considered Willa. "We'll have to ask them when we go home," she said.

"Definitely," Keith nodded.

"...or wait," Willa murmured. "What if they... if they hear what happened and..."

"Willa," Keith said gently, cutting the question short. "They are not going to blame you for this. And believe me, if they somehow decide to blame you, I'm gonna have some very strong words for them," he added, smiling.

"...thank you," Willa said, smiling back. She and Keith exchanged a kiss, then they turned back to accept their rewards. They also ended up hearing what the larger robot said as it made to take Alex's remains away. Apparently, the "current occupiers" of the Loch Bygone Pokémon Gym would take over Gym Leader duties for the time being. Keith supposed this might mean those robots, but he wasn't sure either way. It also delivered some strange news- Alex's remains had apparently been there since well before the water had drained out of this area.

"...how is that possible?" Willa asked bluntly.

"Well, it's not entirely out of the realm of possibility," Keith added grimly. "Nobody's seen Alex since the Primal Dialga incident, after all..."

"...oh," Maribel murmured. "So he could've been sent through time just like we were."

"Except apparently a lot further back," stated Willa. "That's... unsettling."

"Yeah," Keith nodded. "Especially to me- that time distortion that brought us back ten years, that isn't even my only brush with time travel. And I don't just mean ancient Romma, either."

"Yeah?" Maribel said, looking up at her father. "What else happened, Dad?"

Keith couldn't help but smile, even with the circumstances being what they were, as he saw his daughter looking eagerly up at him, wanting to hear more stories of his travels as a Trainer. "I'll talk about it when we get home, sweetie," he promised. "Speaking of which, I... think we had better get moving now," he added.

"Indeed," Willa nodded. She turned to look at the Grass/Dragon-type by her side, in the air once more now that Gravity's effect was gone. "Flapple, you did very well today. I'm proud of you," she added with a smile.

"Flap! Flapple!" Flapple responded happily. The news that nobody had died from the Gravity incident seemed to have cheered up the Apple Wing Pokémon as well. Smiling, Willa withdrew Flapple, and the family started to make their way home.

Argyle stood still. Like trainer, like Pokemon, his Dartrix hadn't moved from its place since the battle finished. Everyone just needed a moment to take it all in. How did one process this anyway? The violent scenes of the helicopters falling like rain drops from the sky were going to be etched in Argyle's mind for years to come. At least no one died, that was a relief for sure. Then, of course there was the dead gym leader. A big slap in the face by the impermanence of humanity. An uncalled reminder of Argyle's own impermanence. As long as he lived a fulfilling life, Argyle would be fine with that. He just had no idea what that fulfilling life looked like. So, he'd just have to live as he knew and make peace with his regrets. But Argyle being Argyle... let's just say that was way easier said than done...

While Argyle was doing his own assessment, Wisewoods was doing his. This was the first battle he fought as a Dartrix and it was the first battle that he had Dynamaxed in. Normally, this would've been cause for celebration, but Wisewoods was anything but joyous. Pokemon were just as observant as humans, if not more. Wisewoods felt for the poor Swampert that had rampaged. It's trainer's irresponsible actions had caused Pokemon and humans alike pain. Wisewoods felt for the deceased gym leader's Pokemon. They had lost a friend. Wisewoods shuddered at the thought of losing Argyle. Though, true to his name, Wisewoods knew that this was just how life and death completed each other. He also knew one more thing. One thing he was pretty sure Argyle had a tough time accepting. Did the sun still rise? Did it still give way to the moon? Did the earth still rotate? Everything would find a way to work out no matter how bleak things got. Wisewoods promised to watch over Argyle and make sure that the nihilistic thoughts lurking in the shadows of his mind would never claim the smile that had won Wisewoods over so long ago in Ilex Forest. In fact, he should be by his side now...

Dartrix started flying toward his trainer when a blue light engulfed him. By the time he arrived, he was a Decidueye. The two shared an embrace.

"It's over," Argyle found himself saying.

It is... We should take some time off and unwind, Wisewoods conveyed mentally to Argyle.

"Wisewoods?" Argyle was confused, "I can hear you? This is like the time with the Kirlia at Fortune's Woods, but you're not a Psychic type?"

This is probably the result of my spiritual powers and our bond, Wisewoods replied.

Argyle smiled the smile Wisewoods vowed to watch over. He hesitated. There was a lot he wanted to say but the words didn't form. Sometimes they weren't necessary. Shortly after, they ended the embrace and looked upon the lakebed once again. Argyle muttered a simple prayer and Wisewoods joined him.

"It's been a long day," Argyle said, "We should spend some time under a tree to relax. We haven't done that since leaving Johto."

That'd be nice, Wisewoods consented.

The duo picked up their rewards and left the gym.

Life went on.

----

Dartrix had gained 2 levels here, so with the 6 new levels, he is now at level 49. What's more he'll be evolving into a Decidueye.

Picking up the following:
  • 40 Watts
  • x1 TR Hydro Pump
  • x2 Passho Berries
  • x1 Shuca Berry

Thanks for the raid!
