The CCG Corner

Because it's time to talk about Children's Collectible Card Games. First of all, let's address some of the issues the previous system failed at horribly, leading to its death:
-The cards were horribly overpriced, and it was nigh impossible to build a decent deck, much less build an real collection.
-The game engine was forum-based, which made the game sloooooow.
-Little to no relation or interactivity with the rest of FB.
-Little incentive to actively play the game.
So, with all of that laid out, I have a series of ideas and proposals in order to give this a proper resurrection and then gauge whether it would be of the community's interest to participate on it.

I. Cost of cards and collection building.
Back in the day when the casino was at its most broken, people where accumulating coins by the millions, and the TCG corner was implemented effectively as a money sink. Thus, prices catered to folk who had nothing else to spend money on. The problem is, shortly after, the Casino stopped producing such huge payouts, and prices were never fixed to accommodate for this. The thing about CCG's for those who like to play the game, is that you need to be able to have a steady influx of cards in order to properly build your decks, and for some key components that requires the ability to open dozens of packs at a time. So, if you can't generate enough money, and cards remain as expensive as ever, well, the game is gonna die.

So, the questions are then asked: How much does the average player earn on a weekly/monthly basis? How much of that do we expect them to sink into collectible cards? How many boosters packs per month do we expect them to open for it to be significant towards the goal of building a proper collection?

With those put on the table, I theorize that, with an income of about $1,000 / month (at least a reply a week), one should be able to purchase a maximum of 20 booster packs a month or, asuming just a single reply / month, one should be able to purchase at least a single booster every week. Thus, I'd like to propose that booster packs be set at a very accessible price of $50 each.

As far as collection building goes, I'd like to point out an inherent problem that can be observed: opening boosters will generate plenty more copies of of common and uncommon cards while rares and holo rares are still way too elusive. This leads to the cluttering of "trash" cards while also forcing players into buying way more boosters than they really need, making the game a bit more inaccessible. In addition to this, the playerbase isn't large enough to generate an effective trading system for players to complete their collection/decks. So, following the example of most modern CCG's like Hearthstone, I'd like to implement a crafting system. The basic idea is that players should now be able to trade in cards in their collection for credit, which can then be used to purchase any one specific card of their choosing. Cards traded in should generate about 25% of their worth in credit than what it would require to directly purchase a card, where a common is worth 40 points, an uncommon 100, rare 400, and holo rare 1600. This allows players to more easily complete their collection without relying purely on rng rolls. Also, by implementing crafting credit we can also use it as a reward for various CCG related tasks and activities, further incentivizing player participation.

II. Game engine
Games used to be held strictly on forum thread, much in the same way we conduce pokemon battles. This not only made the whole process unnecessarily cumbersome, but also severely limited the way card battles could be integrated into other areas of FB. A long time ago, discussion had sparked on whether one should use something like Redshark in order to hold a battle live, and then post the log into the forum for the rewards.

III. Integrating the CCG as part of your RP
A benefit of using a faster game engine is that battles could now take just a mere moment to complete, and could then be used creatively elsewhere as part of your RP. For instance, you could in theory challenge a random NPC to a card game, Witcher-style like Gwent, battle your updater's made up deck, and earn a small reward in the process without really hindering your overall RP experience. You could have your character always carry a specific deck or decks with him/her around and make everything feel like its part of the universe. And this is just an example, the possibilities could extend even further than that.

IV. Making FB's Pokemon CCG a rewarding experience.
In order to promote further incentive into the game, we could tie in rewards that extend beyond those that are CCG related. For instance, regular standard and draft tournaments could be held that provide rewards in the form of pokedollars and some other value item. We can also make battling players and npc provide a crafting credit reward which can be used to further fuel one's collection, allowing one to have a "F2P" experience of sorts after minimal initial investment. Further rewards are also up for discussion.

Anyways, with all of that covered, would you be interested in giving our CCG Corner a go? What're your thoughts on the matter? Discuss!

The TCG system died because it was terrible and nobody collected cards. There's absolutely no incentive to bring back a collectable card game to FB, and frankly no proper reason to either. When was the last time people here actually got excited about cards?

It died a painful death years ago, and should stay dead.

I'm gonna suggest we postpone talking about the TCG until sometime in the future when the game is in a better functioning state.

I always liked the TCG but its not very high on the list of things we need to talk about.

With all due respect, I believe I've sufficiently addressed why it died, and I, as well as just about anyone, sure don't want that version of the CCG back. I've yet to see suficient reason as to why not bring it back in a better form however, and rid it of its former stigma in the process. Care to dedicate a moment of your time to actually address the viability of the amendments I'm proposing? I'd seriously appreciate more insightful commentary instead of stubborn naysay.

Edit: But as Emi said, perhaps we might leave this for a later time.

CARD GAMES IN CYBERSPACE

...Say what now?

Personally I don't really see a need for TCG specifically in FB; if anything I'd like it to be a UPN-community wide thing. But I agree this should be tabled for a later date, if at all.

I am curious about whether we will be bringing back Contests. I miss those. =<

It was essentially filler to cover up for the fact that you couldn't actually do anything in the RP- now we can, so it seems unnecessary.
