I've not really dived into All-New All-Different Marvel much. I did read All-New Wolverine, which was an interesting first arc. Seeing X-23 take up the mantle is a decent way to continue the name recognition without actually having Wolverine (a Fox owned movie IP) around.

I do follow the criticism that All-New All-Different isn't that much of a fresh reboot starting point as some might have thought it would become. To understand all these new stories, we still need to read all the older stories. It's just now Secret Wars has simply combined the favorites of each multiverse into a single universe.

Has anyone read anything from DC Rebirth?

Aw. I like those kinds of reboots. But let's be honest here, it's Marvel. Their IP is so well established that any kind of reboot wouldn't be able to distance itself enough from its previous stories. About the best we'll get is the Cinematic Universe.

However, at the same time, it might still be a fresh starting-point reboot. Starting in medias res is not a new storytelling technique, and reveals of character backgrounds could reboot the complicated, convoluted storylines that already exist (a la X-Men Origins: Wolverine, which put a new spin on the old lore of where Wolverine came from and including characters that were more fresh and interesting than before).

The general points to reboot is to make entry easier for new readers. None of that happens with All-New All-Different. It's really more All-Same All-Old with relation to how new readers would still need to learn the history and plot points of the past few years of Marvel to really get into these new titles.

BORKED
Comics Explains has a bit of a rant about these points.

I'm surprised nobody has as of yet brought up the official trailer for the Justice League movie that is apparently to come out next year.

I'm actually pretty hyped for JL and WW from the trailers. Really looking forward to seeing the Superfriends JL act as a family. Only wish that...

Spoiler: show
Clark could be there too. ;(

But Diana and Bruce are basically like the Mom and Dad, with Flash and Cyborg their sons, and Aquaman the crazy uncle. X3 I love it.

Plus it's cool to see a badass Aquaman. I honestly don't really get where the whole "Aquaman is silly/useless" trope comes from. =3= He was a BAMF in the JL cartoon.

Also mentioned a theory I have here.

Supefriends, the reference you made, is where stupid Aquaman came from. DC has worked rather hard over the years to try and get rid of that image, but Aquaman has had a lot less exposure than Batman, who was for a time considered silly and campy thanks to the Adam West series. Batman has had Tim Burton, BTAS, JL/JLU, and Christopher Nolan films to showcase him. Aquaman has had.... uh.... a handful of guest appearances and no movies centered on him.

Anyone who reads the comics knows Aquaman is almost at Superman/Wonder Woman tier strength levels, commands an army of Atlanteans, commands aquatic life, and has a magical trident that can hurt the invulnerable Superman.

I like oversexualized Aquaman It's so rare that we get actual hunks in movies aimed at men.

The Batman in this JL looks fucking stupid though. I really don't think it's possible to make that costume look good in a live-action movie.

Yeah I know/figured that's where it came from so it was sort of an ironic statement, but after watching JL/JLU I'm surprised not more people were familiar with that version at least, as I assume many nerds/even casual fans of this gen grew up with the show.

@Shuckle I don't like Batman's DCEU costume design either, but meh. I like Affleck's Bruce Wayne a lot better as a character here than in the Nolan films.

Small collection of sassy Batman quotes from various TV series and/or movies. I enjoyed it. Most of these are old (to me), but one or two were new (to me). Thought I'd share.

For what it's worth, I've immensely enjoyed DC's major event Dark Nights: Metal thus far. It's done a really good job of tying together loose threads from previous events (though it occasionally reeks of retcon, but that be how it be sometimes). Plus, it's a lot of fun. I mean a lot of fun.

Apparently the Justice League movie reviews came out and they make the movie sound awful. RIP DC Cinematic Universe.

So I haven't seen it yet, but I've had some friends who did watch it and say that it wasn't as awful as the reviews made it seem. I will say that the film has two different tones that clash and it's very obvious which scenes were done by Zack Snyder and which were done by Joss Whedon based on tone and style. Which is weird because people would say they liked DC movies for their dark tone that Snyder pushed for, but now people generally like the films more now that they have a more Marvel tone that Joss Whedon set in the early waves of films.

Bad CGI-porn that they do is still a problem.

I went to see it with my friends on Friday night. I had heard mixed reviews so went in cautiously optimistic. I think one of Batman's lines pretty much sums up my thoughts towards it (and the DCEU in general):

"I don't... not like [you]."

Seriously though, I enjoyed it. It was fun. I like the characters and how they played off each other. Even the pacing within the film bw their backstories seemed fine, which is what I was most worried about after how bloated/badly edited BvS and SS were. I just wish they weren't rushing the plot overall to try and catch up with Marvel.

Although was I the only one expecting...

Spoiler: show
...there to be a bookend of Superman's answer to the question regarding the "best thing about earth"? It might've been even better if they had kept him dead throughout the entire film, and then left off with the interview's conclusion as a final parting message. Maybe even allude to the fact that there are other heroes who can take his place: "Anyone can be a hero," basically.

That said, I'm glad I watched Man of Steel (for the first time, along with X-Men: Origins) right before I went to see it, since it helped fill in some of the thematic continuity. Having finally seen MoS, I'm not sure I get all the DCEU Superman hate either. The movie was a bit boring in the middle, but I liked the beginning and the end. (Yes, even/especially the controversial parts - regarding the conclusion at least.)

I still have faith in the DCEU. If there's one thing it's doing right, it's the characters and their interactions. I'm curious to see where they go with these iterations. They hit a goldmine with Wonder Woman so I don't expect them to give up easily after that. And while JL might not be nearly as great, I would say it's "good". Their best/most decent effort after WW at least (in comparison to BvS and SS, which I suppose isn't saying much), and a step in the right direction.

Honestly it just made me happy to see whole gang kicking butt together and having a grand time doing it. What can I say, I love superheroes now. <3

I thought the movie was really good. I have a couple of issues with the story but overall I thoroughly enjoyed it. Makes me have a sliver of hope for the DC cinematic universe (although I prefer the tv version of Barry Allen and they will not even come close to making a better Green Arrow than Stephen Amell)

I wish they'd picked a more obscure hero so I could say "this is the greatest thing to happen to [said hero]".

I honestly don't know what to make of this. It looks both hilarious and amazing. (I just wish the animation weren't CG though...)

Honestly, it's a Pacific Rim level epic "this is the coolest" or "this is the dumbest" Batman story ever.

Problem with DC Heroes

A fairly good analysis of DC heroes have been poorly represented in film adaptation compared the comic versions as well as the Justice League cartoon.

I watched that vid recently, however I heavily disagree with his interpretation of the opening scene of Justice League.

Spoiler: show
a. I think he's being far too critical of the fact that Superman doesn't engage with the children. It did not occur to me at all that he was being overtly distant, and given the POV it was surely done for cinematic purposes. (Granted he does cite the CGI moustache, which I actually didn't notice either.)

b. "This is heavily implying that he's thinking about Lois Lane" - uh... what? I did not get that impression at all. Personally I was expecting there to be a bookend of Superman's answer to the question at the end of the film, and for it to be something along the lines of how "anyone can be a hero/take his place", but I accept that it was left open to interpretation. However, I certainly would not have imagined his response to be simply "muh gurlfriend" based on the way he was acting. I'm pretty sure he was taking time to think because he wanted to say something profound and inspirational. Or more generally, that there so many things he loved about Earth it was hard to choose just one. I read in an interview that Henry Cavill himself thought Superman's answer would be "love".

Quote:
I think --- and I imagine Superman would also think --- the greatest quality of people and humankind is their capacity to love regardless of hardship or difficulties or personal trials. People can be living in the most horrendous war zone or under the most incredible oppression and yet they can still love so selflessly and so unconditionally --- and still bear hope through that love. It's amazing to see what people can do. I think Superman would recognize that and appreciate it.
Source

I also disagree with the Zod debate. When I watched MoS, it became clear to me that Zod was not going to stop at lasering a few people, and flat-out declared that he would never stop trying to destroy the human race. (Incidentally, I really liked Zod as a villain for the moral dilemma he presented, since even though what he was doing was awful, i.e. genocide of an entire planet - he had a legit reason for wanting to do so.) That... really doesn't leave Supes much of a choice, does it. Maybe there were other ways he could've handled it, but in the heat of the moment I can forgive a split-second decision to save the greater good, especially when he was so new to superheroing at the time.

While the Superman we see in JL may be somewhat at odds with the character portrayed in MoS and BvS, I believe it's a step in the right direction for brighter moments such as these. His philosophy according to Cavill is very much in line with Wonder Woman's thematically (heck I just wrote a fic drawing upon those parallels based on the opening scene *shot*), and I'm looking forward to the DCEU carrying on those hopeful tones. I think all the characters are likeable/interesting (not just Diana), and when they come together in JL it does work as a team dynamic. They may not be exactily like their comics counterparts, but that's part of the fun of adaptations/alternate universes since you can explore different possibilities.

(That Kill Bill quote though is seriously WTF.)

On a semi-related note, thought I might share this as well since I was talking to Talon about it the other day:

BORKED

The plot actually sounds really intriguing and heartbreaking IMO (if even more controversial for obvious reasons). I was on the edge of my seat just listening to the synopsis wondering what was going to happen next, and while I was fully onboard up until the ending, I think it could work if done right.

*cough* Speaking of heartbreaking, anyone still follow JL8?

What's wrong with the Kill Bill quote? It was accurate...for Golden Age Superman. I kind of agree with the premise though that Bill's rant probably influenced people to think that Superman should act coldly condescending, leading to the serious portrayal of Cavill's. Christopher Reeve's Superman was a little playful. Brandon Routh's less so, but he also came not long after KB v.2.
