Round 1: One eternity later...

The closer one gets to the centre of Ilex Forest, the more things seem to be... strange. The cries and buzzes of wild bird and insect Pokémon begin to die away, leaving the foliage eerily silent. The light seems to flicker, more than normally expected despite the dense canopy of leaves, almost seeming like day jumps to night and back again at the drop of a hat. And for those not prepared, there's the disturbing feeling that time itself is speeding up or slowing down. Come without a watch, and you may feel like you've been wandering for days... or longer.

But few people do come prepared, fully knowing why these temporal anomalies plague the area. One such trainer approaches now. Tall yet slim, dark clothes adorning his body and a (non-douchey) fedora atop his hat, he projects a far greater sense of age and wisdom that his youngish body would suggest. One who not only knows the darkness, but welcomes it. Indeed, this figure until recently lead the Ghost Gym, commanding otherwordly spirits with ease that would drive others into the depths of nightmares. Now his focuses lie with things a bit more natural, his ownership of the Grass Gym surely aiding him against the foe he seeks today, knowledge of all their tricks and traps. As the forest thins out, the Sneezey steps out into the outskirts of a clearing, in the centre of which is a lone, solitary structure. The Ilex Shrine.

He doesn't remain alone for long. A strange, warped noise echoes faintly around the clearing, giving no clue as to its origins, and then suddenly, hanging in the air as if it had been there the whole time, is the forest guardian itself. Celebi blinks wide, blue eyes once, gazing curiously at the interloper into its sacred realm, but its Psychic senses either clue it in to what the human's intentions are, or feel the sheer darkness washing off him. Either way, it doesn't like what it feels, eyes narrowing in a combination of anger and fear. The grass rustles despite a complete absence of a breeze, even the trees on the edge of the clearing shifting slightly as the pixie nervously flits around above the ground.

However, our challenger hasn't come all this way for nothing. Time for backup. Producing a PokéBall, he lobs it forth to reveal a creature of similar size and shape, crouched to the ground as it forms from the energy released by the device. Blinking gem-like eyes, Keaira rakes her claws through the ground before standing to her full height. Despite being only inches shorter than her quarry, she still has to look upward at the floating Legend, but this doesn't put her off, far from it. The gems on her chest glint in the morning light showing off that one of them isn't found on every Sableye... one that is yellow with a helical shape within, red and purple twirling together... able to show off the species' true power to the best of their ability. The gremlin crouches, arms raised and claws bared, while Celebi responds in kind, eyes flashing with temporal and psychokinetic power. It may be weak to both of the creature's types, but it does have the home field advantage. There's only one way to find out who will win here...

So early in the proceedings, that aforementioned gem on Keaira's chest, the one not found on just any Sableye, begins to glow vibrantly. At her trainer's command, the glow envelops her, soon forming into a crystalline cocoon that envelops her entire frame, Celebi watching with interest. Clearly not every challenger it gets is capable of such a feat. After a few seconds, the barrier bursts outward, the Sableye screeching as power courses through her veins. Her eyes now ruby-red, her teeth metallic gold, her pointed ears exaggerated, but the most striking feature is the massive red gem now within her clawed hands, propped up by the smaller goblin. As she settles down, she grins, now more confident against such a powerful foe, but despite what Game Freak wants us to believe, transforming is not a free action. Small seeds rain upon the Ghost-type's body, bursting open to release several thick, green vines that lash around her body, binding one arm to her side and leaving the other haphazardly supporting the gem solo, Cele giggling with delight at its technique having worked, while Keaira scowls, an expression that will surely only deepen when the foliage starts to transfer energy back to her opponent.

But at least her mouth is free. Baring her golden fangs, the gremlin releases a guttural growl, one that wouldn't sound out of place in the deepest, darkest locations on earth, such as the abandoned mines that her species makes their nest. A black shockwave of energy accompanies it, washing outward toward her foe, but the mystical energies surrounding the holy shrine seem to sap away at its power, causing the distinct darkness to wash out into a slightly less potent grey, further infuriating the goblin. It still washes over the Time Travel Pokémon for a fair hit, Celebi squeaking slightly as it flinches backward in the air, but it's clear that bite has been taken out of the blow. Indeed, the mystical creature doesn't even seem put off like most other targets of the technique, though this may be its Legendary status affording it some resistance to all but the most potent of intimidation techniques. Either way, the Grass-type is soon to return the favour, pirouetting in the air to release a salvo of seeds once more, but these ones far larger than the ones that previously peppered the poltergeist.

With speed only available to a master of temporal and botanical manipulation, they streak toward their target. Upon impact, they burst open with explosive force, a series of shockwaves stunning the Sableye for a strong return shot, Keaira's bound arm preventing her from using her giant gem to block any of the onslaught. The attack is swift but punishing, managing to chip away at Keaira's health just as much as the Darkness Pokémon Sableye did to Celebi. As the Darkness Pokémon shakes off the onslaught, she growls lowly, getting back to her feet as much as her restricted body will allow. Waving her free hand, she summons some otherworldy energy, wafting it toward her foe in a light, purple gust of wind. The gale lashes against the pixie, causing it to drop slightly in altitude, but its tiny wings are clearly only for visual effect, mystical power fuelling much of its flight as it picks itself up in the air, staying well out of the laden gremlin below it. As Keaira begins to recover from the opening round, she gasps, the vines binding her body glowing slightly as a faint trail of energy appears between the combatants, Celebi appearing mildly refreshed as its technique saps some of the interloper's energy away. Though it looks slightly more roughed-up than its challenger, this battle is still far too early to call...

Sensing that this adversary, though similar in size, may well present a challenge to its continued defence of the forest, Celebi opts to call on its defensive powers. As both a Grass-type and Psychic-type, its support movepool is formidable indeed - perhaps the only blessing brought by this oft-maligned type combination. The bright blue eyes of the Forest Guardian gleam golden for a moment, mental energy coalescing before its hovering form in the shape of a thick pane of psychic glass. The screen hangs before its owner, allowing both combatants to see each other just fine... but blocking any attempts to attack with energy-based means. Fortunately, the timewarping onion seems to have predicted correctly, a small cloud of flame building within the Mega Sableye's gold-lined maw, before washing outward. The flames lick down their originator's body, scorching up the vines left behind from Celebi's technique, causing them to shrivel and die from the scorching heat, dropping off the gremlin's body uselessly. curling up on the forest floor. However, that's all the effect the flames have - the curtain of fire washes against the Light Screen uselessly, being sucked up by the defensive barrier to leave a satisfied, damage-free Grass-type on the other side, smiling brightly at its foe's failure.

Now free of her restraints, Keaira grabs her gem, and begins lugging it toward the treeline, its weight hampering her speed some as she does so. Celebi quirks a brow curiously, amused to see its quarry fleeing so soon, and cups its hands behind its protective screen. Light sparks off its body as it gathers some magical energy from its very core, channelling it along its arms into a dancing ball of mystical power, shining brightly within its grasp. Satisfied that the attack is prepared, the Time Traveller shifts its screen to the side, slinging it toward its foe. The Sableye, busy trying to retreat, only notices the incoming sphere of light too late to do anything, and is caught in the side by the effective blow, striking at one of her few weaknesses for an impressive shot. Her gem clunks to the ground as the Ghost-type lands prostrate, growling to herself as she dusts herself off, picking her body up, smarting from the inflicted damage - fortunately, her crystalline eyes prevent her accuracy from being affected, and she diligently hefts her shield back into position, dragging it back to the trees. Her golden grin is lined with malice, and her red eyes sparkly dangerously, clouding over with an inky purple darkness as she channels some spiritual energy. Lunging her head forward slightly, twin sparks of black lightning burst from the gems, converging as they tear toward their target... only for the Light Screen to flare up again, absorbing the spooky attack easily, leaving Keaira thwarted once more, and the guardian grinning impishly in a twist of irony... though the shield does now sport an ominous-looking crack down the middle. While Celebi has managed a small turnaround, its lead over its opponent is nothing to boast about, there still being plenty of time for the challenger to turn this bout around...

Round 3: Down with a bump

The jewel-like eyes flash bright pink for a moment, the gremlin channelling a vast amount of Psychic power throughout the battlefield. The trees creak and groan, blades of grass bending a bit as the pull of gravity suddenly increases vastly, all capped off by the Forest Guardian dropping out of the air to plop on the ground with a bump. The Legend frowns, wide eyes narrowing indignantly as it holds itself up on its legs, diaphanous wings flitting uselessly behind it. The pixie seems strangely reluctant to go into its natural realm of the forest, instead staying out in the clearing as its quarry hides within, cackling at the success of her plan. But the time soon comes for her next attack to be put into action. Hands wrapped around her huge crystal, the Darkness Pokémon begins to stumble through the trees away to the right, while Celebi watches, gathering a vast amount of its natural powers about itself, the form of huge leaves starting to swirl around its body. As the attack gathers strength, so Keaira picks up speed, an aura of avian energy surrounding her body... but given the cumbersome load of her shield, she's barely moving faster than a Slowbro using the same technique.

This is when things get confusing for the Sableye. Her orders call for her to burst out of cover and turn... but she can only make the evasive twist at the last second, and considering that Celebi is still a ways out from the treeline... this is problematic. Taking things into her own claws, once she feels like she's built up enough speed, she bursts out of the undergrowth, tearing toward the Time Traveller... though nowhere near as fast as she could do if unladen. This presents all the opportunity Celebi needs. The huge, energy-based leaves build and swirl, before blasting forth in a veritable maelstrom, lashing and swirling around Keaira, tearing at her body and dealing tremendous damage, while also killing what little momentum she'd built up for her attack, the aura fading from her body as she staggers back toward the treeline, a little over two-thirds of the way between Celebi and the forest. Grumbling, she picks herself up, brandishing her gem defensively, but it's more than likely cost her quite a bit this round. Celebi, meanwhile, grins triumphantly, having once more gone damage-free, though quite a bit of energy was used, lowering the potency of its Grass attacks for a little while. Despite the effective one-movers, both sides are starting to tire a bit, breathers not being a bad idea right about now. Gravity in effect for a little while too, hindering Celebi's mobility, but with Keaira starting to look pretty battered by now, we'll see how much that changes the flow of battle...

With its mobility hampered by the intensified gravitational pull, Celebi is nonetheless determined to return to evasive action. Though being winded by the intense attack it used last round means that it takes a little while to get going. This, combined with its stubby legs clearly not being meant to provide sole transport, means that the graceful Forest Guardian is suddenly turned into a chubby nerd being subjected to the 100m dash on sport's day. Though Keaira is pretty winded herself, the Mega Sableye has far less to do, hefting her gem in her clawed hands to grab onto the tip, before spinning on the spot. Once, twice, three times the Dark-type pirouettes, the huge gem leaving the floor to spin around its owner, before soaring through the air toward the Legendary Pokémon. Celebi barely makes it inside the treeline before turning to look at its adversary, just in time for the huge lump of crystallised rock to smash through the Light Screen, scattering it into pieces and impacting heavily on the pixie's body with a squeal of pain. The gem thuds audibly into the soil, while Celebi rolls backward a few feet, the hefty stone knocking it a couple of metres away to land in a heap. Keaira's golden gnashers twist in a grin - after so long on the back foot against the other diminutive fighter, the powered-up gremlin appears to have caught something of a break.

Dropping to all-fours, the successful goblin begins to dash toward her felled opponent, moving with blinding speed now that her gem isn't weighing her down. It only takes a few seconds for her to reach the gem, point stuck into the ground and forming something of a ramp, which she duly rushes up in the name of looking... pretty awesome, really. As she launches herself from its precipice, one of her hands begins to glow with a sickly purple hue, venomous power pouring down her arm and into the sharp claws capping off each digit. Celebi has just about picked itself up and dusted itself off by the time it looks up to see the approaching opponent. Wide, blue eyes scrunch as it braces for impact, Keaira's claws lunging forth to stab into the time-traveller's chest, injecting its venomous payload and causing another cry of anguish to tear from Celebi's mouth, more precious health being stripped away in the strike as it staggers back. Its eyes snap open again, narrowing at the successful Sableye as a hand rubs the wound on its chest, but fortunately it doesn't seem that the ghoul managed to inject any lasting venom into its system. Satisfied, Keaira shuffles backward toward its Gem, keeping a wary eye on the stricken Legendary, until she bumps into the gem. She turns to extract it from the ground, and this is Celebi's cue. The pixie cups its hands, a familiar orb of bright, pink, glittery energy forming within as it taps into its magical reserves. Retrieving her gem, Keaira turns back just in time to see the attack leave Celebi's grip and sail toward her, faster than the tiring gremlin can duck behind her crystalline shield. As the magical power impacts on her body, the Sableye hisses, stepping back a little as she brandishes her gem. This battle now a little more even - Celebi now looks about halfway done, but still in better shape than its challenger in both health and energy, with Keaira panting a little more now, a breather definitely advisable for the Sableye. It's still hard to say who could walk out of here as the victor...

She watches to see what the Forest Guardian attempts this round, panting for breath as she keeps her red, gem-like eyes trained on the sprite. Celebi, however, has no such patience in mind. The Grass-type's body glows a vibrant green, tendrils of energy swiftly extending outward from its frame, quickly lashing around the Mega Sableye's limbs and body before pulsating. The Time Traveller grins, almost puffing up as it siphons precious energy away from its foe, causing Keaira to sag as her tiredness is suddenly exacerbated, the gremlin quite literally drained thanks to the Legendary's ministrations. Still, she manages to puff and pant enough to exhale a freezing gust of wind as the tendrils retract, chasing them across the arena before washing over the Grass-type. Celebi shivers, its foliage-like skin almost wilting from the severe chill, wingbeats almost ceasing for a moment, though given the gravitation pull yanking it to the floor, this doesn't have as much effect as it would normally. Still, the mythical creature is left with some significant slowdown as numbness sets in, dulling its physical reaction time and leaving both combatants pretty slow on the uptake.

This allows Keaira an opening. Despite her tiredness, she leaps toward her foe, claws extended and growing with a sickly green tint, insectoid power focused within. She swipes at her chilled adversary, a screech of pain leaving Celebi's lips as the attack ravages its health, before a second swipe follows, and a third. The Mega Evolved ghoul goes into a frenzy of slashes, but there's only so much she can do to counteract her own tiredness - after a good portion of the attacks, her own fatigue allows the warping wonder to slip away, claws thudding into the dirt as she gasps for air, her energy reserves dwindling at an alarming rate. Celebi hisses in pain - its attacker's onslaught may not have been complete, but it did a significant blow to the mythical creature's healthbar, blowing this contest wide open. Wings flaring, a faint buzzing noise rings out as the Psychic-type narrows its wide eyes, sending a gust of wind blowing across the small gap between the two. The attack isn't massively effective, blowing the limp gremlin back a few inches as she staggers back to retrieve her gem, but at this stage in the battle, every little counts. As the Darkness Pokémon leans against her gem, panting for breath, she turns to see her opponent swell with newfound confidence - it seems that the attack has managed to luckily leave Celebi with an all-round boost. This could prove decisive - while Keaira has finally managed to snag the health lead, it isn't much, but both combatants are looking roughed up, if not yet critical. Energy is the opposite - Celebi is looking chipper after its little snack, while Keaira is desperate for a breather, now well into the second half of her reserves. Things appear to be winding down here, but it's clear that neither combatant is out for the count. Not yet.

Empowered by the boost garnered last round, Celebi's body courses with the desire to end this battle swiftly and decisively. The onion-sprite's outline flashes, an after-image of itself appearing before swirling, transforming into a mass of mystical rocky energy between outstretched hands, the mythical creature pulling one arm back to pitch the attack toward its adversary. Keaira, looking decidedly more ragged, just about has time to plant her huge gem between herself and her aggressor, the massive mineral absorbing the impact as the prehistoric power slams into it, though some of the energy transfers through it to jolt the Sableye on the other side. Keaira's golden teeth grit in pain - though the blow was reduced, with so little health to spare, every knock is potential agony.

Not to be outdone, the gremlin's outline flickers, the darkness around her feet taking on a darker hue as her shadow animates. Remaining crouched behind cover, the Mega Evolved spectre manipulates her cast shadow from below her feet to suddenly stretch out around her gem. Celebi's wide eyes blink in surprise as the streak of darkness rushes toward it, before Keaira's likeness lunges from the pool of shadow, smacking the Grass-type for a shot of damage that causes it to wince, despite the buff to its defences. Just as suddenly, the mythical creature's blue orbs narrow, determined not to be outdone by this interloper into its domain. Cupping its hands before its body, Celebi's body glows verdant green as it focuses natural power, causing a sphere to form, steadily growing larger and larger. Slowly, the pixie steps to the side, looking for a weak point... before lunging, quickly casting its attack around Keaira's gem. The Dark-type looks up in surprise, before hissing in pain as the green orb erupts against her body, bursting with nature's energy to whirl around her form, dealing yet more unwelcome damage. As she picks herself up, she peers around her gem, a scowl of displeasure visible on her features, while Celebi looks a bit more pleased at having scored some payback damage. With this battle rushing into the final straight, things are still even - both are looking pretty scuffed up, Celebi fairing a little better, with the Legendary still leading in energy as well, but both are pretty ready to end this. It can't take too much more, surely...

The Sableye slinks backward, dragging her gem behind her, keeping it raised like a shield just in case. As she goes, she suddenly breaks into a spin, clutching her precious item and whirling it around her body before letting it fly. Celebi is far too battered to evade the incoming projectile, the fairy squealing in pain as the giant ruby slams against its body, falling back, struggling to get back to its feet. Wide eyes narrow in fury, but instead of dealing a killing blow, the forest guardian instead decides to leech back some lost health. Waving a hand, several seeds fly forth through the air to land on Keaira's body, bursting and latching vines around her as the gremlin slinks back into the shadows of the trees, apparently not minding or caring.

Because she knows what's happening next. The Darkness Pokémon draws her hands together, cupping them before her body as she manipulates the very shadows surrounding her within the dark forest. The outlines of the trees on the ground almost bend through the air, pulled into the Sableye's grasp and forced together, merging and churning an an unstable orb of darkness that grows larger and larger. With how dark it is, the attack is completed rather quickly for its power level, and seconds later Keaira flings it forth, the orb bursting out from the treeline. Celebi's eyes widen in alarm, and it tries to release the last of its magical energy from its body in a small orb of its own, but with a lack of power the attack is half-baked at best. It bursts against the incoming storm, causing the larger attack to wobble and churn, but remain on course... before it explodes. All the absorbed shadows are unleashed upon the mystical creature, billowing around it in a hurricane of darkness, tearing at Celebi's skin and wings. As the onslaught abates, the pixie stands, a pained look of determination upon its features... before slowly pitching forward, landing on the grass, face-down, unmoving. The vines binding Keaira wither and fall apart, releasing the panting ghoul from her bonds as she slowly trudges out to retrieve her gem, before a flash envelops her and she returns to her regular Sableye form, the battle at its end as she stands over her foe, victorious.

Celebi is unable to battle! Sneezey and Keaira win the match!

Well. That took far too long. Apologies to everyone, particularly Sneaze, for being... far from reliable in reffing this. I blame work, and stuff. Anyway! I seriously thought this battle was going the other way, right down to this round - if Celebi had used almost any attacking move first here, it would probably have won. But it wasn't to be, and Sneaze finally walks away with his prize, likely to take up residence in the Grass Gym. Assuming that thing's still going.

Anyway, for the breakdown:

Sneezey12 captures the Mythical Pokémon Celebi, to be added to his squad and used according to the rules regarding Legendaries.
DaveTheFishGuy receives 5 (ill-deserved) SP for reffing a Legend Match
The Mystery Legend Controller receives 5 SP for controlling a Legend

And that's all she wrote. I'll leave it to the Mystery Legend Controller to reveal themselves should they so desire. Thanks to all for reading, I hope it was enjoyable. Y'know, aside from the months between rounds.

Thanks for using the DaveTFG Reffing Service.
