FAQ

Boys and girls, face forwards! Welcome to this summer's (2014's?) potential biggest hype hit, Mekakucity Actors! Let us journey into the Heat-Haze together!

But first, some background:

What is the Kagerou Project?

Also known as "Kagerou Days" (Heat-Haze Days), the Kagerou Project began as a series of Vocaloid songs produced by Jin/Shizen no Teki-P. It expanded into several light novels and a manga, and an animé adaptation produced by SHAFT is currently airing under the title of "Mekakucity Actors".

So is it about Vocaloid?

No. It has its own unique plot and characters. Vocaloid is merely used as a medium to express the story.

What is it about then?

As described in the OP, the tale revolves around a group of children with special abilities who meet through various connected events. The meaning behind these strange occurrences is unknown, but one thing's for certain: There's more to these people and their pasts than meets the eye...

For those of you who would like a preview of the first episode, here is a 15-second CM for the animé:

Spoiler: show
BORKED

The song and PV for "Children Record" also acts as an alternate OP for the music series, though it may contain some spoilers:

Spoiler: show
BORKED

"The story of children's faces."

So I watched the first episode the minute Connor got us a link and its pretty great. I absolutely love Ene...no it's not because of her looks. :< She's hilarious and I love the...relationship? Not the word i'm looking for but..ah~ The dynamics between Ene and Shintaro. Makes me laugh so many times.

Oh, Ene. Breaking the fourth wall I see. Literally.

Episode 01:

Spoiler: show
The gears. Why are there gears in the Heat-Haze. Are we even in the Heat-Haze? Is Ayano a magical girl with time travel abilities? WHAT IS GOING ON.

SHAFT strutting their stuff with a Seto head-tilt not two minutes in.

Why is Momo in the water. Augh I know but I don't know. And Ene and Konoha still in cyberspace ahhhh. Is this canon or just artsy-fartsiness? This intro already saddens and confuses me even more. ;-;

Anyway, after that scene we get to the meat of the episode: Banter between a loser shut-in boy and his cyber girlfriend. (No reference to Shin's attempt to penetrate the music industry though. Kinda both disappointed and relieved by that, guess they replaced it with the animé otaku self-insert instead.) They really re-designed his room too. Where's the rabbit? =< Tonoooo

Going outside = death. (Hey guys guess where I got the inspiration for Aoi from? *shot*)

Aww they revealed Kido is a girl already. =3=

SUDDENLY TERRORISTS. WITH JOKER MASKS.

Kano you creeper. And Seto what are you doing there. >.>; You're not supposed to be captured.

Such SHAFT. Much art. Wow. (Translation: I feel like that ending was a bit too subtle. It's implied Shintaro got shot in case anyone's confused. ^^; )

That OP has so many spoilers. And soda fanservice. I'm sure Jin had something to do with Momo in a bikini. Also the COLORS~

Overall, a fun if somewhat slow introduction to the series, with a couple extra surprises. Which is how the manga starts off as well, so not complaining. While the animation/character designs still feel a bit wonky to me, it was cool to finally see everything in motion. (Though I feel SHAFT made things a bit more complicated than they needed to be.) Looking forward to when the plot actually starts to pick up. =3

Mekaku City Actors

Episode One

Spoiler: show
This episode is really confusing, but I like it. I want a room like that ;; And Ene is super cute, though I could see why her master gets driven nuts by her.

The beginning part is strange. I have absolutely no manga understanding of it, but hey we get glimpses of the other characters. I'm looking forward to Mary when she appears. IIRC she shares Manaka's voice actor. And d'aww that voice sounds cute.

Terrorist Attack! And joker masks were exactly what I was thinking. Kano is creepy. I think his personality stretches to more than just a 'joker'. Seems kinda sadist. And apparently one of them have magical 'I WILL MAKE HIM HIT YOU' powers. Seto didn't really do much I think.

So generally I'm pretty confused about this anime so far, but it has be hooked. Let's hope it'll be good and Manaka Mary will appear soon!

I don't even know where to begin on how to describe this.

The closest I can come is saying it's more disjointed than a bucket of fried chicken.

What happens when this guy wants to look at porn? Flawless execution when Ene tells him to quickly grab a tissue, so I guess they have a lot of practice.

These robbers remind me of a game called Payday: The Heist, in which a bunch of guys in suits and clown masks rob banks, demand ransoms, and the like. Except they tilt their heads at weird angles.

Oh, there are mainframe terminals just freely available to the public. No wonder this mall got hijacked so easily.

The color palette makes for some cool artistic shots and a lot of cheap-looking "imagine there are some people over here" scenes.

Cool use of palette!
Spoiler: show

Super cheap!

I was hoping Ene would critique him on his taste in hentai after claiming to have seen his folder, because I'm curious just what "douteis" are interested in. Probably girls with a thin waist, thick chest and air-headed personality. I wanted to grill that guy on-air for his inferior, 1D taste in 2D!

I watched the first episode myself. It was okay. I can't say I had any big complaints, but nothing grabbed me either. Maybe something will change when I see what the point of everything is?

I want to see a show that's a parody of SHAFT's animation style. Have like an OVA sized episode mock all the things they like to do. Like have someone die from the neck turn, because they bent their head too far back. Every time someone does the neck turn, they die. Some characters realize this, and decide not to turn their neck. Sadly, it's SHAFT (imitators), so the character HAS to turn his/her neck for no reason, meaning that by the end of the show, no-one is alive!

Hi

Wow. Its a SHAFT series but I didn't expect this to be SO much like Monogatari. As much as I liked it, I would've liked it to be a bit more original to itself rather than just taking the camera angles, the style of humour, the colour palette, etc from the Monogatari series.

Anyway, I don't really get whats going on at this point but I imagine we'll find out next episode, so I'll stay watching. I would make comments and such but i'm pretty tired.

Also, Shintaro is totally Tomoko's brother from Watamote. :')

The beginning part didn't happen in the manga or novels as far as I know, so I'm almost as lost as you are. (Although I do know some things...)

Hi!

Yeah, I also wish the animation was a bit more original/better. At least some extra color/shading would be nice. Darn SHAFT blew their budget on Nisekoi I hear. =3= (Although the designs are growing on me since I've rewatched the OP a few times.)

Things are supposed to be confusing (though I feel like SHAFT made things even more confusing-er), so stay tuned. All will be explained... Hopefully.

Also wow you're right they have the same saggy eyes and everything. XD

Momoobs makes an appearance! *shot*

This episode felt really short but it was cute none the less. Nothing much seems to be explained but next episode probably should reveal something. We see something about her eyes this episode, which was cool.

Momo x Hibiya is just...yes. Cute af.

Other than that, there really didn't seem to be much in this episode. I dunno, it was cute but I wasn't too enthused.

Episode 2:
Spoiler: show
It was a nice, cute, filler episode. THe interaction between Hibiya and Momo was pretty much as expected, though I'm curious since this seems to follow hte novels a bit more than the manga. Also, Kenjiro was a huge creep. Just a huge creepy creep. Anyways so many fucking spoilers in this episode it's not even funny, if you know where to look. Also the EP implies Kagerou Days isn't going to happen. (If the anime is your introduction into Kagepro, do not click. Speculation on the series as a whole)
Spoiler: show
I wonder if this is truly the TRUE route.

Anyways, looking forward to Mekakushi Code. Though, I find it weird since after Kisaragi Attention the manga goes into Yuukei Yesterday/Headphone Actor. I don't know about the novels but I think they do the same.

ALSO THAT SPOILERIFIC SECOND OP. IT'S SERIOUSLY I SPY WITH MY LITTLE EYE A SPOILER EVERY SECOND

If you don't want to be spoiled, don't read please :p

Episode 2:

First sighting of Momoobs!

So me, Blaze, Lost, Yuki and Connor were watching a livestream while reaction video chatting. It was fun. Will do again except loltime.

Spoiler: show
Anyways, what caught my interest was this episode had no Shintaro. I found it pretty interesting how he didn't 'appear' in this episode. Rather, it was Momoobs (a.k.a Momo) taking the episode with Hibiya's debut. A rather fillery episode, thought it was pretty funny and cute at times. And this episode converted me into official Hibiya x Momo.

The ending was pretty anti-climatic though. I literally went 'lol what' (and so did the others in the chat) when the episode abruptly ended. Meh, it was okay I guess. Didn't really do much in this episode.

Also lol @ Yuki/Lost screaming SPOILERS after watching the new OP/ED. =p

Fear my master Momoob technique.

Episode 02:

As far as fillerservice goes, I thought it was fun/fine. I'm surprised they skimped on the explanations (and sadly still the animation - I honestly think they made the OP worse), but it was entertaining enough for the most part, with some extra tidbits for the fans. Dat insert song. Dat ED.

Yeah, I don't really got much to say. The ending was abrupt and I thought we'd get further in the plot than this - I can't even link the song the episode is based on since we haven't quite covered all of it. The creator really loves Momo so I think he was trying to heighten her appeal by giving her more screentime/expanding her story.

(contains slight spoiler for next ep?)
Spoiler: show
It was sad to see more of her past though. I didn't think Momo had any interest/talent in art, but knowing what I do about her actual ability, I wonder how much of it is really innate.

Also pedobear producer what.

I plan to watch it again later since I missed some stuff due to the stream/call. Definitely want to hear that Kisaragi Attention again at least, I hope they release a full version.

Oh yeah, and Momo's voice surprisingly didn't annoy me at all. Guess she just sounded weird in her CM.

Episode 01:

Spoiler: show
Characters: Shintarou is interesting enough to lead this program but ... he's not who I expected to be the main character of this franchise. In fact, he's not much of a "main character" period in a sense. He seems like an ordinary young man with no discernible talents. I had thought going into this that maybe he was an expert computer programmer and that Ene was his creation, but no: even Ene it seems fell into Shintarou's lap, the result of good fortune (and that depends on who you ask) rather than any real skill or talent on his part. But I like him so far and look forward to seeing more of him.

Ene annoys the ever-loving crap out of me. I really wish that she'd just shut the fuck up. ^^; Way too talkative, way too annoying, way too whiny, just ... ugh. Not my cup of tea. I do like the word play that they appear to be going with here though: the episode is called "Artificial Enemy" and her name is Ene, the first few syllables of the word "enemy". Is Ene an enemy? And if so, whose? It'll be interesting to see, I guess.

One problem I have with the Ene-Shintarou situation is this: if Shintarou is annoyed by Ene so much, why didn't he simply wipe his hard drive clean? And if that failed, replaced the entire computer with a brand new one? Perhaps future episodes will shine some light on this. Because either it's a gaping plot hole or else it's a hint that Shintarou isn't really bothered by Ene so much as he may want us to believe he is.

The girl with the long olive hair ... I originally thought was a dude. ^^; I swear, anime has ruined me on long-haired characters with hoodies. Anyway, she seems like she could be interesting. But we obviously don't know much about her yet. It could be a coincidence, but her eyes went from red to normal to red again along with her hood being on, then coming off, and then being put back on again. The exposed lower left leg could be a style choice of hers or it could be significant. Finally, the fact that she disappears pretty damn suddenly could be Shaft being weird or it could be important. Lots of little things that invite wild speculation but little in the way of concrete facts.

The talkative psychic is another one who is definitely intriguing. Hot on the heels of the hostage crisis, this guy's arrival helped to make the episode much more interesting. I'm curious to see if the red eyes that we see so many of the characters temporarily having is some sort of "PSYCHIC MODE: ACTIVATE" thing or not. Maybe each kid has a unique power. Or maybe they're all psychics. Guess we'll have to wait and see.

Seto, the other psychic (?) nearby, I think is the character who I thought was the star of Kagerou Days. I forget if he's the one who's been in most of Yuki's fanart or not. Shintarou, when he has the red eyes, looks an awful lot like the guy. Then again, all of these boys with short black hair and red eyes look an awful lot like the guy. ^^; Anyway, for the simple reason alone that I thought Seto was the main character of this project, I'm interested to learn more about him -- especially since in this first episode he seemed like a supremely side side character.

The girl we see at the very beginning of the episode (in the clock gears area) doesn't even seem like she's from the same universe as these other characters. It'll be interesting to see who she is and what her relation is to them. One thing that stands out to me is her dress: it's a classic girls sailor uniform for school, one which you just don't see anymore in a Japan where every school tries to individualize and have their own unique uniforms. It makes me wonder if she's from an earlier time period or what. Shaft certainly isn't a stranger to such stories.

Animation: I didn't mind the art that much as far as technical merits go. Yes, it's simple, but I guess partly because I have so little emotional investment in this franchise going in and partly because I don't mind simple animation necessarily, it doesn't bother me too badly. That stated, I agree that it's nice to get the red carpet treatment from a studio like ufotable or Kyoto Animation when it comes to one's favorites -- and thus I do sympathize with Yuki that Shaft, despite being filthy rich from the success of Madoka, is being so stingy with their production values here.

However, what I did mind was the presentation. It's more of a directorial thing than an animation thing, but I'll mention it here because it's the animation which makes it most obvious of all. This anime feels like it is trying to be artistic for art's sake -- and I hate that. ^^; It's very distracting and it's not even very good in my opinion. All the crap with the clock works ... all the crap with the crows ... all the crap with the constantly cutting between still frames of scenery ... I hate it. Art should help to tell the story, not distract from it. I feel like Shaft doesn't agree with me on this point and that they instead prefer to use the story as an excuse to go ART EXHIBITION CRAAAAAAAAAAAAAZY! So many times during the hostage crisis scene, I kept thinking to myself, "While I'm on the edge of my seat plot-wise, I really wish that a better studio had gotten to do this project instead. :\ I'd much rather see the hostage crisis scene being animated in real time than see all of this artsy fartsy crap."

Plot: The first half of the episode was so utterly boring that it took all of my self-restraint to not hop out of bed, sit down at the computer, and tell Yuki that I am dropping this show. I kept telling myself, "Dude: Madoka didn't get really good until Episode 03 either. You need to give this show at least three episodes before you tell Yuki you're dropping it."

But once Shintarou ran into the girl with the long olive green hair, things began to inch forward; and once the hostage crisis began, the show came alive. I had not been spoiled on this going in. (Or if I had, ages ago by Yuki maybe describing the details behind some character song, I did not remember it.) So it came as a huge surprise to me that these kids all meet (well, some of them meet ^^; ) via this shared experience of being hostages at a shopping center. It instantly gave me vibes of 999 or Ever17. very good vibes. I was suddenly glad to be watching and on the edge of my seat to see what would happen next.

And then the one psychic boy whose name we don't know yet ... he let's all Hell break loose as he brings all of these HDTVs and flat-screen monitors raining down upon the hostage takers. Suddenly the show takes a turn for the paranormal and makes me more curious than ever to know what's going on.

And then the episode ends. Fuck.

But at least the OP credits (well, ED credits this week, but it looks like an OP to me) shows us Marry. And she looks even cuter than I imagined. Please be the best kagerou please be the best kagerou please be the best kagerou ... And at least the OP/ED is also courteous enough to allude to the fact that Shintarou will also be doing red things with his eyes and so too will a lot of the kids. Are they all psychics? Are they vampires? ;p Are they the Chosen Children? Only time will tell.

This is better than what the show has been feeding us.

That said, I've watched episode 2.

Episode 2 spoilers I guess
Spoiler: show
Isn't it a bit too early for stuff like this? We haven't even been introduced into the actual plot, and we're already watching episodes about characters who we're (well me atleast) not sure how plays into everything. This episode told an okay story at the very least.

Also SHAFTness levels are fucking obnoxious this week.

Episode 02:

Spoiler: show
The first new character, Kisaragi Momo, I do not find interesting for her herself. Her personality, her backstory, etc. What I do find interesting about Kisaragi Momo, and indeed what is one of very few saving graces for Episode 02, is what we're told about her powers. While Momo the character I might not much care for, Momo the world-building tool I find to be mildly fascinating.

The second new character, the teacher, it remains to be seen to what extent he'll play a role in this story. He shows up in the OP credits, suggesting he's not a throwaway character; but then again, most of these kids don't strike me as high school students (even though they're of the right age) and the odds of them all going to the same high school as Momo defy belief.

The third new character, the young boy as yet unnamed, it really remains to be seen whether he rocks, sucks, or somewhere in between. So far, so fine.

Shaft seems to be fond of planting clues in the form of very briefly shown cels. For example, this picture of Momo (which later showed up in the episode) and this garden (which may or may not have shown up, I don't remember) were shown at the end and the beginning of the episode, respectively, for less than half a second. Why Shaft is doing this, I don't know, especially since the material shown later shows up in the episode in some (if not all) cases. But it's clearly deliberate and thus something worth noting, I suppose, as far as trying to crack this case goes.

Aside: noticed the brand name of the soda this week. Oshiro Cola. Not really sure what to make of it; the first thing that comes to mind is "White Cola", but why it'd be called White Cola and what the significance (if any) of that could be, I've no idea.

Kisaragi Momo, a teen idol who lost her father at an early age (but whether to divorce or to death, we yet not know) and whose mother is also now out of the picture (but, again, whether to hospitalization or to death we're not really sure). Momo agrees to become an idol more out of necessity (to cover her living expenses and/or to pay for her mother's hospital bills) than anything else. The episode reveals that even though being an idol is paying the bills, Momo would give anything to be a normal girl. She can't stand the constant attention from fans.

And this segues into discussion about Momo's powers. We saw in the previous episode that the one boy, Kano, appears to possess the power of telekinesis. The girl with the olive green hair, Kido, was also shown to disappear very rapidly. And now this episode shows that Momo possesses an animal magnetism so strong that people can't help but to like her. (Although the flashback with the art club member who got very nasty with Momo begs the question of just how strong Momo's magnetism really is, who all it works on, etc.) A talent agent finds himself certain that Momo would make a great idol, unable to take his eyes off of her. Momo's current manager agrees that Momo has an inexplicable charm to her. Even her science teacher can't help but to like the girl, remarking that "it's the students you like the most who often perform the worst"; while he is genuinely disappointed in her grades, his manner of rebuking her is coy, playful.

Do the other children possess Momo's animal magnetism? Does she possess their ability to teleport and to move objects with her mind? Questions without answers for the time being. We'll just have to wait and see.

I'm not gonna lie: despite the crapton of photos punctuating this post, Episode 02 was hardly one of my favorite anime-watching experiences in recent memory. ^^; I didn't much care for Momo as a person and the episode was almost entirely focused around a slow exploration of her backstory, filled with Shaft's downright obnoxious visuals. ("LOOK AT US! WE'RE POST-MODERN ARTISTES! ") But the episode picked up in the final minutes of the episode as a) we got to see Momo despairing about her powers and b) we got to see Kido again. Someone (presumably the boy from earlier in the episode, but if not him then I guess one of the other Kagerous) contacts Kido and informs her about Momo. Kido makes preparations to contact Momo and invite her to join the group, and the sneak peek for next week's episode suggests that Momo eagerly joins. Thus, it looks like the plot will finally start to pick up. Maybe. Possibly.

The thing is, we've still not met everybody. Shintarou, Ene, Kano, Seto, Kido, Momo, and Hibiya we've met. Marry and ??? (the #9 dude), we've yet to meet. So while Episode 03 could be the "Welcome to the Mekakucity Club! " episode, it could also be the Marry's backstory episode () or the #9's backstory episode ( ... could be entertaining? ^^; ). But yes, with any luck, the plot will either get going next week or else at the latest Episode 04.

We get to see the ending credits for the first time this week. They're okay. I like the ending for giving us some more clues about what's going on. It seems likely to me that the girl on the train car is the girl from the very beginning of the show. If that's the case, then given that she's joined by the nine Kagerous while she's sleeping it's possible that the ending is hinting at the fact that the Kagerous are all a figment of this girl's imagination / subconscious and that they only exist when she dreams. Maybe. Possibly. [/wild theory 1] Of course, they could all also be vampires as I keep joking to Yuki. After all: the pale skin, the red eyes, the magic powers, the fact that the red eyes seem to correlate with darkness/shade ... who knows! [/wild theory 2]

Since I kinda doubt SHAFT will delve more into detail regarding this, I'll go ahead and clarify:

Spoiler: show
Momo's father died trying to save her from drowning. Her mother is still alive - at least in the novels and manga. The hospitalization was exclusive to the animé though, as well as the art aspect (which does add an intriguing new layer to her ability - is she really actually good at drawing or does her power apply to everything she does?). In the manga it was just mentioned she wanted to help out with the family finances.

I'm not a big fan of all the padding myself (including the first half of episode 01). The manga was already slow enough in introducing the characters. But hopefully having stretched things out they'll be able to focus on the action next episode.

HISSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS

Episode 3

Spoiler: show
Man, I loved this episode. It was pretty nice as we get to see the Mekaku City Dan's abilities. This episode had a lot of great moments that I liked.

It was really nice to see Momo enter the Mecha-Mecha Dan. I liked the place's design and that bed seemed really random. Do all of them sleep on floors or something? Or the cool-way of leaning against the wall? Meh, not really that important, but the place is a source of curiosity. I hope it gets explored a lot more.

The interactions in the Hideout place was pretty funny. You have Kido tearing limbs off Kano and Marry just freaking out, and Seto comforting her. The best part was that we got to see Marry's ability of freezing people. The Marry-Teapot scene where she was bringing tea was pretty hilarious. It was pretty nice.

So to the department store scene - and that's when things started to connect. Ep 2 seemed like an awkward sudden jump to another timeline or something, but it turns out the events of Ep 2 happened actually BEFORE Ep 1. This sort of explains why Kano and Seto were in the shopping mall. The part where Shintaro bumps into Kido - he seems super apologetic while Momo is just like "O-ONICHAN?!". Man, it sure was a surprise, becaue I thought Momo would be Shintaro's older sister. Then I realised that this is the first time when Shintaro was revealed to be Momo's brother. Early spoilers are bad.

Man, Seto and Marry. There's just way too much hints between the two. Seriously it's so cute - can't stand the cuteness. The last part was pretty confusing though, I might have to rewatch it to really understand it.

OH AND ANTI-CLIMATIC MUCH?

Overall I liked this episode because it linked stuff up. I'm just hoping Ep 4 won't go 'LET'S DO AN EP2 AND CONFUSE EVERYONE BY STARTING IN A COMPLETELY DIFFERENT PLACE!', but I think that's the route they might go down next episode. Hibiya and Konoha (?) and a girl whose voice I don't know of (maybe the girl in the ending?) is appearing next week. That's pretty great. At least Hibiya had some form of interaction with Mecha Mecha Dan through Momo. Only time will tell!

*begin to chew thumb anxiously*

ALSO MARRY SOUNDS EXTREMELY LIKE MANAKA. DON'T DENY IT.
