He'd not been nervous before. Usually when he was making a trade to add a new Pokémon to his team, Dave was excited, or some other generic positive emotion. But today, it was different, both in what he was looking to acquire and whom he was acquiring it from. He'd heard the stories about this girl, a long-time resident of Fizzytopia, a specialist of Ghost-types, and the owner of a somewhat worrisome Banette...

The trainer shook off the worries as he stepped into the Cable Club. He spotted her instantly, a pale, wispy girl dressed in old-fashioned clothing. While she appeared to be about the same age as himself, looking at her for more than a few moments gave the unsettling impression that she was either a lot older or a lot younger, he wasn't sure which. A shaking bundle inside the shoulder of his t-shirt showed that Rincewind was just as spooked, though it didn't take much to unsettle him in the first place. Dave put this down to her close proximity to spirits, and averted his gaze, pulling a small pouch of coins out of his pocket and dropping it on his end of the machine. A flash of light later, and he was picking up yet another PokéBall from the device. Turning to his trade partner, he flashed a smile and a nod, and turned toward the door before the creepy vibes came back. He got the feeling this wouldn't be the last he'd see of her...

Outside, the sun was skimming the horizon, a warm dusk glow lighting up the surroundings before the Earth's shadow started to shroud everything in Fizzytopia in darkness. 'A fitting scenario', the fisherman thought to himself, feeling his Trapinch crawl back out into the evening air. Looking at the orb in his hand, the trainer smiled. At last, a spectre of his own. Rincewind eyed the device nervously, before Dave dropped it to the ground. "Come on out, Duskull." he spoke aloud, the sphere splitting open to disgorge white energy.

There wasn't much of a form for it to take as it darkened. The result looked like a ragged bundle of sheets with a skull mask at the front, a solitary red eye glowing behind this hollow face. The effect was unsettling, but Dave had been prepared for that when he agreed to take on a Ghost-type. What he wasn't prepared for was suddenly being aware of a voice. AH, MUCH BETTER, THANK YOU.

Dave blinked, confused, before looking around for whoever had spoken. Rincewind did the same, using his perch from his trainer's shoulder. Seeing no-one around, he looked back at his newest Pokémon. I SAID THANK YOU. THAT CONTRAPTION CAN BE AWFULLY CRAMPING.

Now things were getting weird. Dave looked again for the source of the strange voice, but there was still no-one there besides himself, Rincewind, and the Duskull. Slowly, his train of thought reached the only obvious conclusion. "Did... did you just talk?"

NOT TECHNICALLY, NO. BUT I AM COMMUNICATING WITH YOU. The voice was strange indeed. It sounded like slabs of lead being dropped on a marble floor, but Dave was sure he wasn't hearing it at all. The speech was arriving at his brain by some method other than his ears. IF IT HELPS, THIS IS JUST AS STRANGE FOR ME. the Duskull added, almost sympathetic.

"Is this even possible?" Dave asked, to no-one in particular. Rincewind let out an uncertain click, clearly also unnerved by the strange goings on.

IT HAS BEEN A WHILE SINCE I CAME TO THIS WORLD FOR AN EXTENDED PERIOD. I USUALLY ONLY COME HERE ON BUSINESS, THOUGH OF COURSE NO-ONE SEES ME UNTIL IT IS TOO LATE. the Ghost went on, adding a slight chuckle that sounded like chalk writing on a blackboard. BUT RECENTLY IT SEEMS THAT MANY SOULS HAVE BEEN MAKING THEIR WAY HERE, STORED INSIDE THE EGGS OF POKÉMON. I DECIDED TO FOLLOW TO INVESTIGATE, AND FOUND MYSELF BOUND IN THIS FORM. the Duskull's small, wispy arms gestured at his body. THE GIRL WHO HATCHED ME WAS NICE ENOUGH, THOUGH IT SEEMS SHE HAS BEEN HEAVILY CONTRIBUTING TO THE VERY DISTURBANCE I WAS LOOKING INTO. UNDOING MY WORK, AS IT WERE.

This was all starting to sound odd to the fisherman. He'd heard the rumours, that Ghost-types were often reborn souls of either humans or other Pokémon, reincarnated into a spectral form, but he hadn't given it much credence. "So... you came from the spirit world to see where souls were going? What are you, the Grim Reaper or something?"

THE FORMER. I AM NOT SURE WHAT 'SOMETHING' WOULD QUALIFY AS. the Duskull replied.

"But you're a Duskull! They guide people to the afterlife!"

AH YES, THERE ARE SOME HELPERS I GET, BUT REST ASSURED THAT I SEE THAT ALL SOULS ARE COLLECTED RESPONSIBLY. I INVITE YOU TO LOOK UP DUSKNOIR'S SPECIES INFORMATION, INCIDENTALLY. I DID EXPECT TO EMERGE AS A MEMBER OF THIS EVOLUTIONARY LINE - MOST FORTUNATE.

"...alright then, let's say that I buy this. You're the Grim Reaper, an ages-old personification of the fear of death, and have come here in the form of a Duskull to see where the souls you look after are going. Fine, yeah, that makes me sound completely sane to say aloud." he muttered. "Do you have a name? If you're going to be a Pokémon of mine, even if you're a little... strange in origin, I need to give you a name."

YOU JUST SAID IT. the spectre replied. I AM WHAT I DO, SADLY. HUMANS HAVE SHAPED ME SUCH OVER THE AEONS.

"Good, that's one thing sorted. Let's clear this whole thing up later, shall we? I'm too tired to think about it."

FAIR ENOUGH.

And with that, a thorougly bewildered Dave recalled his new Duskull to his PokéBall, exchanged a look of confusion with Rincewind, and headed off to try to turn his brain off.

Sharpedo

He'd once promised that he was going to limit trading for new Pokémon. That he should wait until he was a fully-fledged adventurer in the Pokémon World. Yet here he was, trading just one day after picking up his... interesting new companion. Dave still hadn't got his head around the Duskull's origin. But that wasn't important. What was important was the fact that a specific Pokémon was up for trade. Dave looked around the Cable Club, spotting the same trainer who had given him Sybil only a couple of weeks earlier, and headed over to the machine. He dropped a few Candies and a large bag of coins onto the pad, having been sure to go big financially here - he couldn't risk this specimen slipping through his grasp. A flash of light enveloped his cash for a moment, before leaving a PokéBall in its place. Grinning, he picked up the device, nodded to his benefactor, and headed out the door. "Worth it."

Heading outside, he made his way to the nearby pool, where a few others were waiting. Suzi bobbed in the shallows, once again interested in what her trainer had managed to get, while Axelia sat motionless alongside. If the Relicanth shared his teammate's curiosity, he didn't show it. "Alright guys, say hello! Carvanha, come on out!" the fisherman called, dropping the orb toward the water. A burst of light zapped into the water, revealing another piscine Pokémon, a red and navy-blue body with sharp yellow fins, fronted by fierce eyes and a mouth full of teeth. The Dark-type looked around for a moment, taking in his surroundings, before baring his many fangs, lunging toward Suzi. The Remoraid let out a squeak of surprise as the piranha closed in, unable to react in time.

As Carvanha made to close his jaws, he was denied, his teeth crunching down on solid rock. With a remarkable turn of speed, Axelia had placed himself between the two other fish, Hardening his body to withstand the Savage Pokémon's onslaught. Carvanha backed off, spitting out some teeth that had been knocked loose from the exchange, but his body swiftly replaced them from the conveyor belts within his jaws. He knew the Rock-type wouldn't be able to keep up that kind of speed, and tried again, lunging at the softer Suzi once more. Axelia managed to block this attempt too, batting the aggressor away with his stout tail. Though his eyes were perpetually slits, right now they were surely narrowed in anger at Carvanha's behaviour.

Dave wasn't too approving either, only just taking in what was going on. "Hey! Carvanha, these are your new friends, not lunch!"But the toothy fish wasn't listening. Having backed off again, he tried a third time, and finally managed to slip past Axelia's protective attempts, the Relicanth just missing a block. With nothing to stop him, Carvanha closed in on Suzi once more, the Remoraid shutting her eyes in terror...

Swiftly, a shape rose from the depths of the pool, placing itself firmly between the two Pokémon. Wide, wing-like fins shielded Suzi from harm as Carvanha bounced harmlessly off Sybil's body. While the Mantyke wasn't much bigger than the other fish, she outweighed him by a significant margin, and with natural speed on her side she wasn't going to be easy to shift. Recovering from the impact, the Dark-type glared at the interloper... only to stop instantly. Sybil, on the other hand, continued to stare daggers. How dare this other fish try to hurt-- to eat her best friend?! Shirking away from the batoid, a sudden change came over the offender. Suddenly looking embarrassed and defeated, the Carvanha was a different creature than he had been not ten seconds ago. Dave couldn't help but wonder what had brought on such behaviour, the piranha looking at Sybil with almost an expression of shame. Could it be a gender thing? Mantine and Sharpedo were quite closely related, he knew that much. Perhaps he was ashamed of being caught acting like a thug by a female that his species was very compatible with?

Dave sighed. Even in the world of Pokémon, things were still complicated. While the Dark-type was subdued, he recalled him to his PokéBall. "You guys ok?" he asked. Axelia nodded, a few chips visible in his armour, but nothing that wouldn't heal easily. Suzi and Sybil both nodded too, the former comforted by the latter, whose expression had softened instantly. "Good. I get the feeling we've got out work cut out here." he muttered, recalling the trio before turning away. As he walked, he looked at his newest PokéBall. "So, it seems there may be some honour in you yet. First, we've got to curb that dark streak, but I think we can manage that... Sam."

Trading 1,000 coins to Marion Ette for her Lv. 1 Male Duskull. Thanks! The lil' reaper's in good hands.

As Dave approaches the lavender-haired trainer whom he agreed to meet at the Cable Club, the young woman smiles as brightly and cheerfully as she can, bowing respectfully in greeting. As she lifts her head from the bow, her pale eyes flicker briefly toward the trembling lump under Dave's shirt. "Shy, I assume," Marion remarks with a laugh, though given Dave's tense posture and the nervous glint in his eyes which he tried desperately to conceal, Marion gets the distinct feeling that she was somehow involved in the nervous reactions of both the shivering Pokemon and his trainer. The young fisherman had indicated on the phone that he was interested in the Duskull that had recently come into Marion's possession because he owned no ghost types of his own yet, and though Marion had initially gone on and on with great excitement at how perfect Duskull was as a starter ghost type, she had failed to think about how this inexperience might affect Dave's perception of her and her Pokemon until the moment the two met, though Marion was decidedly undeterred. After all, she was used to people regarding her with fear and apprehension, particularly whenever Minerva was around. Thankfully, Marion had the foresight to leave Minerva at home, though this development had more to do with her strongly-voiced dislike of the young Duskull than protecting Dave and Rincewind. Of course, given their reactions to Marion, perhaps it was wise that Minerva did not get the opportunity to torment them... Instead, Marion is joined by a kind-hearted Dusclops, whose single eye lights up with happiness upon seeing Dave. After all, anyone who shows interest in her evolutionary line is clearly someone that she would want to get to know. Of course, she also senses his apprehension, and maintains her distance from the trainer and his Pokemon, instead choosing to give him a friendly wave with her ghostly hand.

"This is Liliana," Marion says by way of introduction. "She's an example of Duskull's first evolution. Hopefully, we'll be able to make her a Dusknoir soon, right Lil?" The Dusclops nods vigorously in response, and Marion giggles a bit. "Lil is a real sweetheart. I've found that Duskull are generally very dependable Pokemon with some training. I think he'll be a great ghost to start off with."

As Marion and Dave approach the trade machine, Liliana hangs back, watching quietly as the exchange is made. The pair of trainers exchange thank yous and short pleasantries before saying their goodbyes; even though Dave never really lost the look of hesitation (and perhaps even dread), at least he had not darted out of the Cable Club in terror. Marion supposed it was progress...

Marion joins back up with Liliana as they leave the Cable Club together, the small bag of coins jingling in Marion's pocket. After carefully meditating on her words for a couple of moments, the Dusclops finally turns to Marion with a bit of concern in her single red eye, and asks the question that has been weighing on her mind since they traveled downtown to make the trade;

"Do you think it was wise to give him the Reaper?"

"It's hard to say, Lil," Marion responds with a sigh. "I do think it's important that trainers better understand the behavior and habits of ghost types, and I think they'll get along, but... well, he's an interesting one to say the least. It's hard to say if he's telling the truth or if he's suffering from some kind of delusion as a result of his transition between the worlds. Either way... We can't keep him, and you know that. His belief system is directly at odds with mine and Minerva's, and while I'm willing to entertain debate regarding Giratina and His teachings regarding the ever-weakening boundary between life and death, well..." Marion cringes a bit. "You saw how Minerva reacted. Called him a threat to the team. Accused him of trying to take her away from me, and insinuated that she would need to get rid of him before he had even remotely enough power to do so. If I hadn't recalled him to his Pokeball in time-"

Liliana giggles a bit. "She really is back to her old self, isn't she?"

Marion's eyes cloud over with a soft sort of sadness. What Liliana had said was true, but there was something... tragic about it. With her memory of the last year gone, Minerva was certainly back to her sadistic old self, but even if she had shed an incredible melancholy, she had forgotten the happiness she had felt, the love that she had shared, the man that she had shared her joys and sorrows with. It was taboo, yes, and possibly unnatural, even sinful... but it was her choice. In a way, that part of her had died, and there was a sort of mourning that Marion felt the need to go through, even in spite of the horrible things Minerva had done as Coselle. Marion could only imagine how Keith felt as a result of that development. Besides, despite Minerva's overreaction, Marion couldn't help but agree with her starter in some ways; after all, the self-proclaimed 'reaper' was arguing for all souls to be returned to the spirit world, including those of her precious Pokemon. Ghost types had to exist for a reason, and to deny these souls a second chance in the material world to set things right... It went against everything Marion was taught, and everything that she believed was right and just about Giratina and His rebellion against Arceus.

"Yeah... I guess she is back to her old self," Marion finally agrees. "Even more reason why I think it's best that the newborn Duskull goes with another trainer. I don't feel like I could give him the same level of acceptance as Dave might."

"I suppose that's true," Liliana says with a nod. "Minerva's beliefs are your beliefs, too, even if you're less... violent regarding them." Liliana giggles once again. "Oh, Minerva..."

"Yeah..." Marion sighs, and Liliana's eye immediately fills with concern. Wrapping a ghostly arm around her trainer, the pair walk home together without saying another word on the subject.

Okiku walked into the Cable Club, a bit confused on why she was invited here. In fact, a few days ago, she received a call from an old friend, Jessica, asking her to come by there with a Bluk Berry. She thought this was the strangest request, but she simply couldn't say no. After all, Jess owed her one: When she was just starting in her Pokémon journey, only with Max and Rawk at her side back then, she was willing to trade, despite Okiku's measly items and precious candies, for a much more valuable thing to the trainer's eyes: a rare and elusive Eevee, a Pokémon which fascinated Okiku with no end but unfortunately was out of reach thanks to the very high prices of the Coins for Prizes shop. Now, after almost a year after that faithful trade, the Eevee, now fully evolved into an Espeon, grew to be a very faithful companion: something no coin, item or candy could trade.

Of course, unable to miss this opportunity of meeting her again, Okiku let out the lilac-colored Pokémon out of her Pokéball for the small reunion.

“You ready?” Okiku asked the Espeon with a smile, as she placed her hands on the handle of the door of the Cable Club's building.

I-I'm ready,” the psychic Pokémon responded telepathically the best she could, “It's... going to be strange, really. I hardly even know her as I've been with her only for a day or two, but I still owe her so much. She put me into your care. I can't believe how my life would be without being around you.

“...I feel exactly the same,” her trainer smiled even brighter, after a slight pause to understand her broken and skipping mind-language. “Alright, let's go!”

Okiku pushed the door open with a bit of a struggle, and as the two entered, they were immediately greeted by the sight of the shy but kind Jessica, reading a manga Okiku couldn't identify, accompanied with what seemed to be a young Eevee, quietly lied down on the floor.

“'eeeeey!” Okiku greeted her, waving with her whole arm extended upwards.

Himiko tried to connect telepathically with Jessica, but as usual, she just couldn't make contact with her human mind... but she held her disappointment in, and instead mewed very loudly and happily, then ran up to her legs to nudge and rub her head against them. Jessica moved her book away from her sight and looked down at her old Pokémon, her face brightening up. The Eevee, however, surprised of the sudden appearance of one of her line of species and the affection she displayed to her temporary owner, ran away from the Espeon. Worried, Himiko looked over her. Afraid to scare her even more, she didn't follow her, walking back to her own trainer's side instead, and sent her telepathically a gentle greeting and apologies for the accidental fright to the young one. Hiding behind a decorative plant, the Eevee didn't dare go back, but had a shocked but curious look on her face as she heard the Espeon's voice inside her head.

“Hehe, seems Himiko's happy to see you again! But... what's up with your Eevee?” the chestnut-haired woman asked.

“Ah, Taki's... just very shy and insecure with other Pokémon,” the dark-haired one answered, “especially those in the Eevee line.”

“Oh, that's... so sad,” she frowned for a moment, before reverting into a confused expression. “Anyhow, why did you bring me here?”

“You haven't guessed yet?” she grinned. “Well I am not going to tell you then until we finish the trade! You got your berry with you?”

“Myep I have! Well alright, let's get to the machine!”

The two trainers approached each side of the trading machine, and after going through the usual procedures, Okiku placed the Bluk Berry into the trading slot on her side. After 15-20 seconds for the contraption to process the exchange, what popped out of the trading slot was... a Pokéball. She lifted an eyebrow, confused on why Jessica wanted to trade a Pokéball for it... and also how does a Pokémart item was able to go though the trading process, despite being an illegal item. Walking away from the machine, she looked over her friend with a puzzled look. In the mean time, Himiko tilted her head while she stared at the miniaturization device held by her trainer's hand.

“Go on,” Jessica shyly invited her, “open it up.”

After a shrug and a slight lift of both her eyebrows, Okiku rolled the ball out of her band, dropping it on the ground. Expecting of just uneventfully smash on the ceramic, the Pokéball instead opened and, in a bright flash of light, brought into the world a four-legged, hippo-like and familiar pink Pokémon... with a red bow, just as huge as the pokémon's head which it was plopped on.

“...A Slowpoke?” the psychic trainer muttered without having time to think through the unexpected event.

“Happy late birthday!” her friend exclaimed as she went up to her to give her a hug. “I've learned through some friends that you were looking for Psychic Pokémon. Since I remembered that your birthday was coming, and I found someone willing to trade away a Slowpoke, I jumped on the opportunity to get it for you as your present!”

“I... I don't know what to say, I... Thank you!” She returned the hug. “I-I can't believe you remember my birthday!”

“it's just a week after my own; not very hard to forget,” she giggled.

“Oh, right,” she slapped her forehead lightly and chuckled. “But again, thank you so much! Now I owe you twice!”

“Aww, you owe me nothing. You're welcome.”

Okiku excitedly looked over the Slowpoke, who seemed to be a bit confused on who she was and what was all the excitement about. While holding herself not to let out even a simple snicker at the sight of the ridiculously-sized gift decoration on her new Pokémon's head (which, making the sight even more hilarious, he seemed to be not aware of it at all), she bended down on her knees at his level.

“Is it... a female?” she asked her former trainer.

“He's a boy,” she answered briefly.

“...Oh, for some reason I thought he was a girl!” She scratched the back of her head in embarrassment before turning her attention back to the Slowpoke. “Why hello there big boy!” she slowly rubbed under his right ear a bit. “I'm your new friend! How are ya?”

No reaction came from the Slowpoke for a few seconds, which although Okiku expected that, knowing how his species are, but didn't know they were that... slow. As she was just about to ask the question again, the Dopey Pokémon finally reacted, first by smiling brightly then lightly tilting his head to his right then slowly and lightly rocked it side by side, like if he was enjoying his earlier scratching... a little late. Finally, he simply tilted his head the other side and stared at Okiku with his big blank eyes for what seemed to be hours, then gave a big, long yawn, which sounded like a cheerful but lazy greeting.

“Haha, well I guess I'll have to learn and get used to your timing on things! I'm sure you'll do fine with everyone.” Okiku tilted her head up in thought for a bit. “How about that I name you... Marbles?”

Sure enough, the Slowpoke gave her a blank stare for a good moment, but as the information finally went through his brain, he happily nodded. He then “suddenly” stretched his eyes open wide, as he seemed to realize something... and quickly (as far as a Slowpoke goes) shook his head and body around.

“I... think Marbles finally notice the bow on his head,” Jess snickered.

Not being able to hold on any longer, Okiku burst out laughing, along with Himiko and Jessica. After the laughter subdued, Okiku removed the bow on Marble's head, stick it on Himiko's then put him back in his Pokéball. Feeling a bit embarrassed and wanting to “pay back”, the psychic Pokémon used her powers to remove the decoration from her and glue it on her trainer's forehead instead. Sure enough, it brought laughter to the group again, even to little Taki, who was watching the scene from her hiding spot since the beginning.

Well that was sure a surprise, ain't it Himi?” Okiku thought while looking at her Sun Pokémon, knowing she'll read her mind.

Indeed!” Himiko nodded, still snickering at her trainer's new headwear. “It was very hard to read his thoughts though. How can I explain... It's, like, an old record slowing down... a movie in slow motion? Anyhow, it was strange.

“...Huh, that's interesting,” the psychic-type trainer said aloud. “Well I guess it'll be time for us to go, don'tcha think?” she politely nodded goodbye to Jessica. “See you again some other time Jess! Thanks again!”

After trading goodbyes, the trainer along with her Espeon left the Cable Club, with a new, dopey friend in hand.

Sam."

OOC: Trading 2 Candies to Marble for Corvus the Honchcrow.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It is late in the evening. Darkness had set in hours ago, clouds now fill the sky letting loose their tears upon the world below them. Rowan looks around, not a sign yet, and turn his attention back to the building across the street. As a young lady passes by, inappropriately dressed for a night like this, Rowan tips his black fedora up as a gesture of greeting. The lady increases her pace in response, the fedora, the long, black trench-coat and the big Cuban cigar create a picture resembling an old black and white movie. The type she does not wish to be in. Rowan however does not have time to care about her lack of manners at this moment. His eyes stay fixed on the building in from of him.
Standing there under the small roof of a bus stop, hardly sheltered from the falling rain, Rowan awaits the arrival of his contact. He knows he could opt to wait elsewhere, dry, warm and sheltered from the elements that play with him now. But he choose not to. He feels this night will hold something special, something that can only occur on a dark and cold night like this. Then suddenly Rowan notices movement near the Cable Club he had been observing all that time. It was time to act.
Rowan quickly crosses the street as he sees his contact approaching the building and intercepts him right before he is about the enter.
"Good evening sir, Levin I presume?" Rowan offers his hand for a handshake and introduces himself, "Rowan Virote is the name, we have had contact concerning Corvus. Please, follow me."
The two young men then enter the Cable Club, Rowan in front, and walk past all the regular trading machines. Rowan then leads Levin up the stairs to the second floor of the building. A floor that is surprisingly void of live considering the regular busyness of the lower floor, even at this time of day.
"I have taken the liberty to rent off the whole floor for this evening. Everything that will be said here today is classified and may contain sensitive details. Now may I ask you to present the Pokémon of my interest?"
"Very well, then follow me" Rowan leads Levin past several small chambers containing a trading machine. Chambers that fill up the entire floor, sound proof and with darkened glass. "We will be using this room."
Then the trading ceremony starts. Rowan brings his two candies to the table, the mandatory goodbye's are being said and the machine in the center of the room does it's work, after which Levin no longer is the official trainer of Corvus the Honchcrow. That title now belongs to Rowan.
"Thank you for this trade sir," Rowan bows slightly and says while looking at Corvus' Pokéball, "May I ask you to leave the room now please? I mean no disrespect, but I have something important, something classified to discuss with Corvus here." He then releases the Big Boss Pokémon.
"Well well, Corvus, a pleasure to meet you. Rowan Virote is the name and I am your new trainer. I have heard a lot about you my friend, I received a quite some information concerning your many abilities and special talents. Talents I plan on putting to good use. I brought you on my team for good reason. You have doubled your value already in your time with Levin, but I know what you want and I can help you make it happen if you just work with me. You may not realize it yet, but I can guarantee that if you do just that, you and I are going to greatly enjoy this partnership. I'll give you a glimpse of what lays ahead."
Rowan takes a pull from his cigar and indulges Corvus in a story about family, business, wealth and secrets. A story to which the Honchcrow crows in an eager excitement.
"I told you you will enjoy this." A faint smile emerges on Rowan's face as he looks the Crow directly in his eyes. The bird returns the look. A dark grin on his face and a sinister sparkle in his eyes. Yes, he will enjoy this. All he ever wanted, it is within arms reach. All he has to do, is simply reach out...
And so, it was settled. He thought he'd feel worse about it all, but to see Corvus take it so well lifted a weight off his shoulders. But why was he surprised? At their core, they were little more than two remorseless businessmen who never nurtured anything between themselves other than a profitable partnership.
He smiled as he entered the Cable Club, The Crow's Pokeball in his hand. He'd learned so much from The Night Broker, but it was time to move on. Levin was no fool himself, and he'd only planned to keep the Midnight Feather for as long as he proved useful; but Corvus had also learned from him, too much perhaps, and it was only a matter of time before he'd have double-crossed his Trainer.
Going their separate ways now was the ideal scenario: Levin's financial skills had increased immensely and his profits had soared under the Honchkrow's guidance, to the point where he was confident he could put it all into practice on his own; but he wasn't wealthy enough to warrant Corvus's betrayal yet. On the other hand, The Crow would be going to a much more appealing owner, a man several notches above Levin in social (and economic) ranking. The Virote family was the ideal foundation for Corvus to spread his influence even further across Fizzy Bubbles.
He greeted Rowan and made his way over to the familiar-looking trade machine. He remembered the many looks of disapproval he was met with after letting the team know that he was parting with Corvus. Not that the Honchkrow was well-liked by anybody other than Krem, but it was becoming recurrent, he had to admit. Still, they all knew what kind of man he was, so why were they surprised? It wasn't the first time he'd allowed Pokemon to embark on new journeys when he had no more need for them. He never dumped them - almost anyway, Wicca was the only exception! -, he pointed them in a new direction. But the fact that he was guilt-ridden, trying to justify this behaviour to himself, was revealing. Yes, despite how much he'd changed over the last year and a half, he was still a cunning, manipulative and self-centered man at his core. It wasn't the first nor would it be the last time he'd welcome a Pokemon into the family and then trade it away if it served his best interests. But that was who he was and how he'd always do things. If those around him didn't like it, all they had to do was walk away.
He placed Corvus's Pokeball on his side of the machine, paused for a second to mentally thank him for his invaluable guidance, and pressed the button. Soon, the Pokeball was replaced by two Rare Candies, and Corvus was no longer his. He'd just doubled his value.
He shook hands with Rowan and left before the other Trainer called out his new teammate. Corvus the Honchkrow was in the past now, and only his teachings remained.
Keith entered the Cable Club, looking the same as ever- he was clad in his usual red and white sleeveless jacket over a black t-shirt, his usual blue jeans and white sneakers, his usual black fingerless gloves, and of course, his trademark cowboy hat. Meowth was also on his shoulder- he was beginning to become yet another fixture of Keith's wardrobe at this point. And, as was not entirely uncommon for them, they were arguing.
"Is youse serious?" Meowth was demanding. "Dem's da last of yer Rare Candies right dere, and youse is gonna trade dem for another Pokémon? And dis ain't even a Poison-type!"
"I might specialize in the Poison-type, but it's not the only kind of Pokémon I like, Meowth," Keith retorted. "Besides, you got no right to complain about me getting non-Poison-types. Recall that you're not a Poison-type."
"Eh... Fair point," sighed Meowth. "But still! Y'know, I'm tinkin' ya shoulda sprung fer dat Honchkrow dat Levin guy was advertisin' a while back. I heard it was supposed ta be decent wit finances, and from where I'm standin', youse could use a little help in dat regard."
"I'm doing just fine in the financial department," said Keith. "Or did you forget about that other trade I got lined up?"
"Yeah, and when's dat happenin' again?" asked Meowth.
"As I've told you before, Meowth, nobody can get into the Coin Exchange at the moment," sighed Keith. "This happens from time to time, when they update the official records- they close up shop temporarily so they can make sure to not miss anything. The trade doesn't just involve candies, it involves coins, too."
"Hey, by da way, been meanin' ta ask ya," Meowth added, "Why didja seem so eager ta trade off dat Black Flute anyways?"
Keith looked around to make sure nobody was listening in, before he muttered to Meowth, "OK, Meowth? The Black Flute emits a tone that is exceptionally unpleasant to the ears of Pokémon. Gastly is a Pokémon. I am 25% Gastly. Think about that." He gave an involuntary shudder at that moment, recalling with great disdain the first time he blew into the Black Flute, and how the tone that had resulted from it had a worse effect than Meowth's claws on a chalkboard. Meowth got the idea, and said no more.
The duo approached the trading machine in total silence after that, and Keith took out of his backpack three spherical pieces of candy, individually wrapped in vivid blue paper. He placed the Rare Candies on his end of the machine, and moments later, a Poké Ball took their place.
"And dis makes number...?" said Meowth.
"42, not counting the Egg," replied Keith. He then threw the Poké Ball. "OK, Axew, go!" he exclaimed.
The ball split open along the black line, and in a flash of light, a small creature materialized, its entire body varying shades of green. A pair of tusks stuck straight out on either side of its head. Keith had seen an Axew before- Marion's Axew, Lizzie, when Coselle had been watching her at his Secret Base. However, while that Axew seemed openly vicious and destructive, this one looked sweet and loving. "Axew ew?" said the Axew, looking up at his new trainer as aforementioned trainer took out his Pokédex.
"Axew, the Tusk Pokémon," droned the Pokédex. "Axew's large tusks are known to break, but if broken, they will grow back quickly. Its diet consists primarily of berries, though they are known to also hunt for prey."
"Well, hello there, Axew," Keith smiled as he scooped the docile-looking Dragon-type into his arms. This appeared to please Axew, for he smiled and hugged his trainer.
"Ax! Ax Axew!" smiled the Axew. Just then, the bush outside a nearby window rustled slightly, catching the Axew's attention. Before Keith could do anything, his new Axew wriggled out of his grip and happily jumped out the window. Keith hastily went over to the window, but before he could even make it there, he heard a frightened screech, cut off abruptly by an ominous crunching noise. Keith looked out the window, and there beneath the bush stood his Axew, happily chewing on something. The ground before him was spattered with blood, and he was standing in front of the carcass of a freshly decapitated wild Patrat. Keith blinked in surprise at this. Just then, Axew looked up and noticed his new trainer, but appeared to act as though nothing had happened. Just as happily as before, he jumped onto the windowsill, and then back into his trainer's arms.
"...OK," Keith said at length, sounding somewhere between mortified at Axew's behavior, and impressed at his apparent skill and efficiency at hunting. "Well, I think you'll fit right in around here," he said. Meowth said nothing, instead opting to warily eye the Axew, keeping his distance, just in case the Tusk Pokémon was in the mood for a second course.
"Hmm?" Axew said upon noticing this behavior. "What's wrong?"
"Nuttin, nuttin," Meowth replied, albeit entirely too hastily for it to be an innocent answer. Indeed, Axew got the idea.
"Oh, don't worry!" he said cheerfully as he grabbed Meowth's paw in a handshake. "You're not a wild Pokémon, you got nothing to fear from me. Pleased to meet you! That Patrat, that was a wild Pokémon. Besides, your kind enjoys the occasional rodent meal, am I wrong?"
"Well, looks like you two are getting along decently," Keith said, nodding approvingly. "OK, Axew, we need a nickname for you. Now... And bear with me on this... but I like the sound of Norbert. What say you?"
"Axew ew!" replied the Axew, nodding happily.
Keith smiled. "Norbert it is, then. Welcome to the team, Norbert!"
With that, Keith left the Cable Club, Meowth on his shoulder, Norbert in his arms, and a smile on his face. True though it was that his team was getting progressively and alarmingly larger, Keith didn't mind in the slightest. He loved getting to know his newer Pokémon, and was sure Norbert the Axew would be no different in that regard.
Charm was walking his way towards the entrance of the Cable Club, a newly hatched male Axew and Rune the Trapinch running beside him.
"Keep up, guys, we're almost there!" Charm urged. Rune quickened her pace, scurrying along to match her trainer's pace while the Axew kept up close behind. The two soon began chasing each other in circles around Charm, a game of tag suddenly erupting.
"Hehe, you must be enjoying the Axew's company, eh Rune?" Charm asked, with a half laugh. The Trapinch stopped running to give what looked like a grin and a "Trap-trap!" before running off once more, the Axew on her trail.
Oh man, now it will hurt Rune to say goodbye to her new friend, Charm thought to himself. "You'll be a dragon just like this little one someday," Charm kneeled over, patting the Axew on the head. "But listen Rune, Axew is going to another trainer." Rune suddenly stopped in her tracks once more, saddened by the news, "Tra-pinch...?"
"Don't worry though, this trainer will take good care of him. I've met a few number of his Pokemon before, and they all seem well-trained. I'm sure he wouldn't mind letting you visit Axew to play from time to time." The Trapinch still seemed upset to lose a friend- she hasn't really connected with any of her teammates as well as she had with Axew. They are always too pre-occupied or just plain uninterested to play. She gave a reluctant nod.
"Here we are, the Cable Club," Charm said, opening the door and letting the little Pokemon through before entering himself. He walked up to the machine and noticed the trainer on the other side. He wore a cowboy hat, and had a Meowth perched on his shoulder. So this is Peeves' trainer, Charm thought, giving a polite wave to the trainer before turning back to Rune and Axew.
"Alright, Rune, say goodbye, it's time for the trade." The Trapinch leans over to the Axew and nuzzles him with her head, the newborn Dragon giving a soft embrace in return. Charm felt bad for doing this to Rune, but the trade has already been arranged and it was too late to turn back now.
He takes out the Axew's Pokeball and recalls him into it. The trainer then places it into the machine, a trio of Rare Candies popping out to take its place. The trade has been finished. "Sweet, more candies for the loot. I'm starting to acquire a big stack of these things," he says, grabbing them, before looking over to his Trapinch once more, who was still distraught. He kneels down to rub her head, "It was for the best, Rune... let's get going." Just then the Trapinch starts glowing a bright white, her form gradually changing shape to one of a larger creature with wings. The glowing soon faded, and what remained was a .
"Holy shit, Rune! You evolved into a Vibrava!" Charm exclaimed, ecstatic as he lifted Rune up. "Vi-brava!" Rune cried, happy with her transformation. "Now you're a real Dragon, just like Axew. I'm sure he'll be surprised when you see him next time. "-brava," The Vibration Pokemon said, satisfied that she may see the Axew yet again someday.
The Vibrava began flying up off of Charm's hand. "Woah there, you just evolved. Don't push yourself to fly too much," Charm said with worry. The trainer opened the door up and Rune took off, flying high and far above the Cable Club before descending back down in front of Charm. The trainer let out a chuckle, "Alright, enough fun for today, let's go," he said walking out of the Cable Club, Rune flying overhead with determination in her eyes.
He hadn't been able to shake the feeling of dread around him ever since that blasted Duskull. Rincewind shook his head. Things hadn't been the same since his trainer had seen the poster advertising the Ghost-type, but ever since then the Trapinch had been picking up on a perpetually bad vibe. The addition of a bloodthirstly Carvanha hadn't helped, and now here he was, riding on Dave's shoulder, as usual, entering the Cable Club once again.
The fisherman glanced at his companion. Of course, with the beady eyes they had, one expression looked the same as any other from a Trapinch, but Rincewind was getting better at conveying his feelings. Usually, they were overwhelmingly negative. "Oh relax, it's nothing creepy or supernatural this time." he muttered, brushing off the Ground-type's concerns as he approached the machine. His trade partner this time was a pioneer in the field of Bug Pokémon. He'd heard of some of his hatches with envy, but here he was, getting one. Depositing a lone Candy on the plate, he was rewarded with a PokéBall. Nodding in thanks to Chad, he turned about, holding the orb in his grasp.
He hadn't even made it halfway to the door when the device split. "Eh?" He hadn't triggered it! But the light poured outward, coalescing into the form of another small arthropod. The Venipede didn't even look up at him, but turned around, getting her bearings, before heading on toward the door at a slow trundle. "Ugh, not another one." the trainer sighed, this being far from the first time this had happened. Fortunately, the Bug-type was slow, and he was able to block her path. "Hi Venipede! I'm your new trainer." he introduced, receiving a glare in exchange. That was all the centipede had to offer before she slowly manoeuvred around him, continuing to the door. With a couple more steps, he was in front of her again. "My name's Dave, and this here is Rincewind." he continued, as if nothing had happened, but within seconds she was on her way again.
The fisherman cast a sideways look at the Trapinch. "Right, you sort it out then." he murmured, placing the Ground-type on the floor between the would-be escape artist and the door. Though a coward by nature, Rincewind stood firm, baring his fangs, prompting a defence display from the Poison-type, the Venipede rattling various small spines along her body, each able to inject poison into an aggressor, leaving neither Pokémon willing to attack. For a few minutes, this stalemate continued, until eventually the Venipede conceded, rolling up into a ball. An expression comparable to a beam came over Rincewind's face, and he nudged the curled creature with his mouthparts, but there was no response. "I think we've got a drama queen on our hands here." Dave responded, scooping up the Ant Pit Pokémon while recalling the subdued Venipede to her ball. Ah well, I'm sure Conina will make herself at home with us. Let's be off." he finished, placing Rincewind back on his shoulder as he at last exited the building.
Eevee A scared face cries, "I'm a monster." So I say, "That's not true at all."
She thought this was the strangest request, but she simply couldn't say no. After all, Jess owed her one: When she was just starting in her Pokémon journey, only with Max and Rawk at her side back then, she was willing to trade, despite Okiku's measly items and precious candies, for a much more valuable thing to the trainer's eyes: a rare and elusive Eevee, a Pokémon which fascinated Okiku with no end but unfortunately was out of reach thanks to the very high prices of the Coins for Prizes shop. Now, after almost a year after that faithful trade, the Eevee, now fully evolved into an Espeon, grew to be a very faithful companion: something no coin, item or candy could trade.
Of course, unable to miss this opportunity of meeting her again, Okiku let out the lilac-colored Pokémon out of her Pokéball for the small reunion.
“You ready?” Okiku asked the Espeon with a smile, as she placed her hands on the handle of the door of the Cable Club's building.
I-I'm ready,” the psychic Pokémon responded telepathically the best she could, “It's... going to be strange, really. I hardly even know her as I've been with her only for a day or two, but I still owe her so much. She put me into your care. I can't believe how my life would be without being around you.
“...I feel exactly the same,” her trainer smiled even brighter, after a slight pause to understand her broken and skipping mind-language. “Alright, let's go!”
Okiku pushed the door open with a bit of a struggle, and as the two entered, they were immediately greeted by the sight of the shy but kind Jessica, reading a manga Okiku couldn't identify, accompanied with what seemed to be a young Eevee, quietly lied down on the floor.
“'eeeeey!” Okiku greeted her, waving with her whole arm extended upwards.
Himiko tried to connect telepathically with Jessica, but as usual, she just couldn't make contact with her human mind... but she held her disappointment in, and instead mewed very loudly and happily, then ran up to her legs to nudge and rub her head against them. Jessica moved her book away from her sight and looked down at her old Pokémon, her face brightening up. The Eevee, however, surprised of the sudden appearance of one of her line of species and the affection she displayed to her temporary owner, ran away from the Espeon. Worried, Himiko looked over her. Afraid to scare her even more, she didn't follow her, walking back to her own trainer's side instead, and sent her telepathically a gentle greeting and apologies for the accidental fright to the young one. Hiding behind a decorative plant, the Eevee didn't dare go back, but had a shocked but curious look on her face as she heard the Espeon's voice inside her head.
“Hehe, seems Himiko's happy to see you again! But... what's up with your Eevee?” the chestnut-haired woman asked.
“Ah, Taki's... just very shy and insecure with other Pokémon,” the dark-haired one answered, “especially those in the Eevee line.”
“Oh, that's... so sad,” she frowned for a moment, before reverting into a confused expression. “Anyhow, why did you bring me here?”
“You haven't guessed yet?” she grinned. “Well I am not going to tell you then until we finish the trade! You got your berry with you?”
“Myep I have! Well alright, let's get to the machine!”
The two trainers approached each side of the trading machine, and after going through the usual procedures, Okiku placed the Bluk Berry into the trading slot on her side. After 15-20 seconds for the contraception to process the exchange, what popped out of the trading slot was... a Pokéball. She lifted an eyebrow, confused on why Jessica wanted to trade a Pokéball for it... and also how does a Pokémart item was able to go though the trading process, despite being an illegal item. Walking away from the machine, she looked over her friend with a puzzled look. In the mean time, Himiko tilted her head while she stared at the miniaturization device held by her trainer's hand.
“Go on,” Jessica shyly invited her, “open it up.”
After a shrug and a slight lift of both her eyebrows, Okiku rolled the ball out of her band, dropping it on the ground. Expecting of just uneventfully smash on the ceramic, the Pokéball instead opened and, in a bright flash of light, brought into the world a four-legged, hippo-like and familiar pink Pokémon... with a red bow, just as huge as the pokémon's head which it was plopped on.
“...A Slowpoke?” the psychic trainer muttered without having time to think through the unexpected event.
“Happy late birthday!” her friend exclaimed as she went up to her to give her a hug. “I've learned through some friends that you were looking for Psychic Pokémon. Since I remembered that your birthday was coming, and I found someone willing to trade away a Slowpoke, I jumped on the opportunity to get it for you as your present!”
“I... I don't know what to say, I... Thank you!” She returned the hug. “I-I can't believe you remember my birthday!”
“it's just a week after my own; not very hard to forget,” she giggled.
“Oh, right,” she slapped her forehead lightly and chuckled. “But again, thank you so much! Now I owe you twice!”
“Aww, you owe me nothing. You're welcome.”
Okiku excitedly looked over the Slowpoke, who seemed to be a bit confused on who she was and what was all the excitement about. While holding herself not to let out even a simple snicker at the sight of the ridiculously-sized gift decoration on her new Pokémon's head (which, making the sight even more hilarious, he seemed to be not aware of it at all), she bended down on her knees at his level.
“Is it... a female?” she asked her former trainer.
“He's a boy,” she answered briefly.
“...Oh, for some reason I thought he was a girl!” She scratched the back of her head in embarrassment before turning her attention back to the Slowpoke. “Why hello there big boy!” she slowly rubbed under his right ear a bit. “I'm your new friend! How are ya?”
No reaction came from the Slowpoke for a few seconds, which although Okiku expected that, knowing how his species are, but didn't know they were that... slow. As she was just about to ask the question again, the Dopey Pokémon finally reacted, first by smiling brightly then lightly tilting his head to his right then slowly and lightly rocked it side by side, like if he was enjoying his earlier scratching... a little late. Finally, he simply tilted his head the other side and stared at Okiku with his big blank eyes for what seemed to be hours, then gave a big, long yawn, which sounded like a cheerful but lazy greeting.
“Haha, well I guess I'll have to learn and get used to your timing on things! I'm sure you'll do fine with everyone.” Okiku tilted her head up in thought for a bit. “How about that I name you... Marbles?”
Sure enough, the Slowpoke gave her a blank stare for a good moment, but as the information finally went through his brain, he happily nodded. He then “suddenly” stretched his eyes open wide, as he seemed to realize something... and quickly (as far as a Slowpoke goes) shook his head and body around.
“I... think Marbles finally notice the bow on his head,” Jess snickered.
Not being able to hold on any longer, Okiku burst out laughing, along with Himiko and Jessica. After the laughter subdued, Okiku removed the bow on Marble's head, stick it on Himiko's then put him back in his Pokéball. Feeling a bit embarrassed and wanting to “pay back”, the psychic Pokémon used her powers to remove the decoration from her and glue it on her trainer's forehead instead. Sure enough, it brought laughter to the group again, even to little Taki, who was watching the scene from her hiding spot since the beginning.
Well that was sure a surprise, ain't it Himi?” Okiku thought while looking at her Sun Pokémon, knowing she'll read her mind.
Indeed!” Himiko nodded, still snickering at her trainer's new headwear. “It was very hard to read his thoughts though. How can I explain... It's, like, an old record slowing down... a movie in slow motion? Anyhow, it was strange.
“...Huh, that's interesting,” the psychic-type trainer said aloud. “Well I guess it'll be time for us to go, don'tcha think?” she politely nodded goodbye to Jessica. “See you again some other time Jess! Thanks again!”
After trading goodbyes, the trainer along with her Espeon left the Cable Club, with a new, dopey friend in hand.
Trading a Bluk Berry for Lilbluecorsola's Lv.1 Male Slowpoke. Thank you so very much!
Jessica progressed the page of her manga, glancing up at the door in anticipation. Through the access walked a young woman Jess knew quite well, immediately recognizable in her Zelda T-shirt. Jessica placed a palm over her own pendant, bearing a mark of the same passion. She waved at Okiku, keeping her voice down in contrast to the other's exuberant yell, but gesturing widely in welcome all the same.
She was so focused on the human's approach that she didn't notice a feline figure dart between the crowd's feet and sneak up on her leg. She startled as heat rubbed against her jeans, wondering at first if it was her own companion, which would be a surprise. However, as she peered beneath her book, she found a bigger creature than expected, whose sleek coat boasted violet hues rather than brown. Something about its face felt familiar. Either her Eevee had somehow suddenly evolved without her notice, or...
"Hey, Himiko. Long time no see."
She murmured as she sealed her reading material and set it aside, reaching down to stroke the Espeon. Scanning about for the original Pokémon that occupied the floorspace, she spotted the tiny fox cowering behind a potted plant, peeking fearfully out at the stranger. Himiko gingerly advanced a few steps towards her smaller self to apologize for alarming her, but the wallflower merely retreated farther into the foliage.
“Hehe, seems Himiko's happy to see you again! But... what's up with your Eevee?”
Himiko's trainer caught up and asked curiously.
“Ah, Taki's... Just very shy and insecure with other Pokémon,” Jess explained with a sigh. “Especially those in the Eevee line.”
Okiku nodded, expressing sympathy, then inquired as to the reason she was summoned. Jessica quickly brightened.
“You haven't guessed yet?” she teased. “Well, I am not going to tell you then until we finish the trade! You got your berry with you?”
An affirmative answer, and so the two claimed a nearby operator in order to make the exchange. Jessica could sense her friend's confusion upon encountering a Poké Ball on her end, seeming to think it was potentially empty and thereby illegal. Perhaps she couldn't imagine gaining anything more in return for a bargain fruit. Jess chuckled, knowing that while her intentions might have once been officially frowned upon and had participated in her share of shady deals to bypass the laws preventing such practice in the past, the act she was performing now was entirely in good conscience thanks to the government's repeal. Both sender and recipient could take comfort in the fact that amidst all the recent upheaval, a great thing to come of it was that the administration acknowledged the right to share one's wealth with others. Jess was more than happy to take advantage of this newfound freedom to celebrate personal occasions and relationships. She truly appreciated being granted this ability (plus the respect associated with accepting weight of its responsibility), for as long as there were still moments of joy and fun - and overall kindness - in Fizzy Bubbles, she would continue to be proud to call herself a citizen of its community, despite any fighting that may occur.
"Go on," she urged eagerly, "Open it up." She then blushed with embarrassment, hoping her pal would be pleased with her pick of present. She always had trouble choosing gifts for people, even/especially those she was close to. Not to mention the fact it was so belated...
Watching with bated breath and whispering humbleness, Jess waited for the contents to take form. A pink hippo emerged in front of them, bearing a big, bright red bow on its head. Upon taking in its dopey countenance, Jessica's heart sank as she berated herself for such a stupid decision, expecting disappointment. Besides, after the extravagance of her first offering, surely this would pale in comparison... The beneficiary's delayed response only served to further fuel her doubt. Still, she tried her best to smile and salvage the situation.
“Happy late birthday!” she shouted as she hugged Okiku, almost suffocating in an attempt to drown out her self-consciousness. “I've learned through some friends that you were looking for Psychic Pokémon. Since I remembered that your birthday was coming, and I found someone willing to trade away a Slowpoke, I jumped on the opportunity to get it for you as your present!” (She wished she had the courage to add: "Actually, I really wanted to get you something better, but this was the only fitting thing I could find for sale on such short notice. Sorry it's so late as well..." but determined such half-assed excuses would only end up hurting both of them more.)
“I... I don't know what to say, I... Thank you!”
The genuine delight in her tone, and the affection in her reciprocal embrace... Reminded Jess briefly of a certain scene, of something she thought she had lost a long time ago. Like back then, it surely wouldn't last, but for a wondrous second, it was there. So she would drink in it to the fullest. (At the very least, it was enough to calm her down.) She beamed, relaxing as she closed her eyes and held the other girl tight, their identical symbols pressing together. Surreptitiously she wiped a tear from her lashes, wondering what she had been so worried about in the first place. In fact, she realized Okiku seemed to be just as shy about receiving such attention, as she stammered like a bashful Mareep.
“I-I can't believe you remember my birthday!”
Jessica giggled. "It's just a week after my own; not very hard to forget."
“Oh, right,” Okiku contacted her forehead mildly and laughed. “But again, thank you so much! Now I owe you twice!”
It was Jess's turn to wear the wool again, flushing as she rubbed the back of her skull. “Aww, you owe me nothing. You're welcome.”
They broke apart finally, and Okiku knelt down to greet her new teammate. She cocked her head, trying to make some clear assessment from its features.
“Is it... A female?”
Jessica gulped, afraid once again she might dissatisfy by answering wrong. “He's a boy,” she stated flatly, crossing her fingers.
“...Oh, for some reason I thought he was a girl!” Okiku scratched her hair and shrugged, turning back to the Slowpoke. “Why hello there, big boy!” she announced to Jessica's relief, endearing below the "big boy's" ear. “I'm your new friend! How are ya?”
As per his species name, it took a while for the Slowpoke to successfully make his new owner's acquaintance. (In the meantime, Jess checked to make sure Taki was okay. She was still camouflaged, and refused any attempt to coax her out.) But eventually "Marbles" seemed to recognize her... As well as the ribbon on his crown. They all burst out in merriment at this postponed reaction. Once her roars had subsided, Okiku rescued poor Marbles from his plight... Only to transfer it to Himiko instead. The Espeon bristled in indignation and used her Psychic skills to stick the frill to her trainer's temple. The group immediately cracked up again. (Out of the corner of her eye, Jess thought she saw leaves rustle slightly, and caught sight of Taki stifling snickers too.)
Taki had been silently watching the proceedings in awe, amazed by what one of her second stages was capable of. The sun cat had even somehow called to her through the mind before. Such strange powers... And yet no one was afraid of her. On the contrary, she and her trainer seemed so close... The Eevee's ears drooped sadly as she envied her senior, believing she could never possess that kind of connection. Curling up in the corner, she started crying softly.
After Jess bid farewell to Okiku, who walked off still sporting her new fashion accessory, she turned to find Taki sniffling in the shadows. Vaguely guessing what the critter was thinking, the girl hesitated, then went first to the chair where she left her publication to pick it up. She stared at the cover a moment before tiptoeing towards Taki, and gingerly placed a hand on the quivering fur.
"Listen, I know you wish to be with your trainer. I miss him too. I-I may not your real trainer, but... You can trust me. If you have any troubles, you can tell them to me. I'll try my best to help." Taki lifted her head slowly, and Jess showed her the comic.
"Here, I want you to have this. I think you'll like it. It's about a boy who can see spirits. There's a character who has your name as well."
Blinking away blurred drops, the Eevee pushed her snout towards the paperback. She gazed up at the girl in astonishment. No one had ever given her anything before. She wasn't sure how to appropriately communicate her gratitude. ...At last, she settled on a small lick of Jess's finger. Jessica scooped Taki up and squeezed her close, passing on the warmth she obtained from Okiku.
"Come on. Let's go home."
She whispered.
Let's wish for "happiness", no matter how sad the future is.
