Steven Universe

Great show from Rebecca Sugar, artist and songwriter from the first few seasons of Adventure Time. Anyone watch it? Great humor and sense of adventure. Glad to see more shows like this popping up these days, there was a long period of time where I felt like a lot of American cartoons just couldn't live up to the way they were in the 90s and early 2000s, but lately I've been pretty impressed with some of the content taking over the airwaves.

Highly recommend this for anyone who likes Adventure Time, Regular Show, or Gravity Falls.

It seems like it would be a pretty awesome show... if not for Steven himself. His existence irks me to no end. I like the other characters okay, and some of the art, especially with Pearl, makes me think of the awesomeness that was Symbiotic Titan, but Steven is so... insufferable.

It's a shame this show hasn't gotten more love on UPN. Steven Universe has shaped up to be one of the best shows around, matching Gravity Falls in its storytelling, humor, emotional moments (which Steven Universe is actually far superior in, honestly), and character development.

The newest episode, Nightmare Hospital, was really good, and pretty frightening. The dynamic between Connie and her mom as an overprotective parent and their child who they really don't understand their child's maturity growth, really hit the nail on the head perfectly for the frustrating battle between parent and child when the two are at odds with one another, but the child feels restricted under the parent's authority. It wasn't the greatest episode, but the events that transpired were great and the outcome was desirable. Overall, another fairly big step forward for character development.

I really hope more and more people start giving this show a chance. The first ten episodes drag a little, but thankfully it's an 11 minute show. Once the story picks up, most people have a difficult time wanting to put it down, even though they tend to want to once they start crying after every other episode halfway into the series ^^;

I do really need to watch this. *looks at pile of other things to watch*

I haven't caught up all the way in season 2 yet but man, I love the characters so much ;v; I don't think I have ONE ULTIMATE FAVORITE and I don't really dislike anyone except maybe Onion he creeps me the heck out

I love how the eps are so short because I watch a few and then go back to whatever I'm doing without feeling I used up so much of my time xd; Although I usually tend to binge watch it anyway BUT WHATEVER

And that opening theme. HNG<3333333

I actually caught up on this series after seeing the buzz on tumblr along with GF's season finale. Thought about making a thread but then saw we already had one, and I meant to post but never got around to it. I have been keeping up though.

It's a very cute show. The beginning episodes are definitely slow and somewhat annoying, but it does get better. What I like about SU is the unique focus on familial themes - particularly maternal (bird mom is best mom *shot*) - and introducing kids to the importance of trust and consent in loving relationships. It's also nice to see the story mainly led by a strong and diverse female cast ("gender" vs. "gem" wars aside), yet it doesn't feel particularly aimed towards a female audience.

Incidentally I've just been listening again to this lovely rendition of "Love Like You" recently, which interprets the lyrics from Rose's POV. It's cool how the official ending is being revealed in chunks. (Here's a link if anyone wants to hear all three parts so far put together.)

I love this show. It is quite literally my favorite cartoon as of now. Feel like I should mention that I'm of the camp "Square mom is best mom" because Garnet is my favorite character of the entire show, Anethyst trailing a very close second.

I am really into Steven Universe right now. Sardonyx is the most wonderful thing and I want her in it way more often.

dirkac 01-12-2016 10:49 PM

So Peridot is capable of being fun.

SoS 01-14-2016 10:16 AM

What the hell was up with Yellow Diamond's face?

Also do these events mean we'll be getting a revised intro?

Spoiler: show
I mean, Peridot's a Crystal Gem now, she needs to be properly included!

If you're annoyed by Steven in early S1 feel free to skip the first 6-7 eps. They aren't really relevant to the plot.

Crys 01-14-2016 06:30 PM

last i remember of this show was steven joshing around with the older doods and getting boned in peridot's pod

what season was that

Sneaze 01-14-2016 06:32 PM

Oh that's not too terribly behind, actually.

satosere 01-14-2016 11:52 PM

Whenever I hear the name Steven or Mike, I can't help but think of that awesome (to me) creepypasta, "Strangled Red." I <3 it.

Ok I know this doesn't have anything to do with the conversation, but- What does "BORKED" even mean?

Also I think my older sister used to watch a show (a cartoon?) called Even Stevens. Or maybe it's something else? Idk.

>Peridot lives in the bathroom

too much

too swol for me

A part of me really really wants to get into this show, but the other part of me really really can't stand Steven. But I like the whole premise and I think I can probably put up with Steven for twelve minutes at a time. The main issue for me is finding a decent place to watch.

biggggg5 02-12-2016 11:48 PM

I am glad that there are more people on here that enjoy this show. I am however confused by the hate that Steven seems to be getting. While i do agree every other character seems to be a bit more interesting most of the time I still find steven to be one of the most tolerable main protagonists around. I was more annoyed by Aang from ATLA and his than Steven. He is constantly amazed by the magical things around him because yeah, its pretty amazing. i would be amazed and probably have similar reactions. I don't really get what is annoying about him compared to so many other protagonists that exhibit many of the same traits.

SoS 02-13-2016 05:12 AM

I honestly think Steven's pretty admirable. His heart is utterly massive, he's courageous and surprisingly resourceful when he needs to be. I can see why people might be annoyed by him sometimes, but as protagonists go, I like him a lot and he's a good audience surrogate for getting information.

Lil'twick 02-13-2016 10:27 AM

The thing with Steven is that he definitely improves as the series goes on. Whenever I recommend SU to a person, I always tell them to watch to Opal. Opal is where the series really starts to get good. The past few bombs have been really interesting and amazing. I just wish we had a more stable episode track. Anyways, hold out on him, he gets better. By Lapis his VA really got down Steven's character.

RealMrGame10 02-19-2016 10:03 AM

Which, if you think about it, totally makes sense, as above all else, this show is about Steven growing up, learning about who he is, and really coming into his own. I just caught up with the show last night, absolutely adored the episode with Peridot and Garnet.
