Trainer and Referee Q/A - Mark II
Trainers! Referees! Ask your questions here!

This thread should serve as your primary point of inquiry if you cannot find find out the answer to a question about ASB rules.

Ask a question here and a more experienced ref will come along to assist you. You can ask about anything, from how scary a Hydreigon is to how much health to give a level up pokémon. Anyone may contribute answers and advice on such situations and you should feel free to (politely) debate the answers with each other. Every opinion is valid and you shouldn't feel afraid to say something even if you're really new to ASB or have been away for a very long time and remember older rules and regulations.

LOs will also contribute advice and guidance as needed but this is a communal thread. However, bear in mind that this thread does not contain rulings, so everything can be contested at a later date.

As a general rule, people giving help should cite a source for the information. If you can't find anything, still post an answer, but make it clear that there's no official source to use. This will help us keep track of things we need to write down officially and make sure that no-one gets in trouble.

Oh great, I'm the secondy person here. Welp, might as well ask the first something.

If I were to ref Castform naturally floating off the ground, would I be doing it wrong?
I only ask because Castform is seen to be floating in every episode of the anime it's in but there are other floatymons who remain grounded in PASBL.

DaveTheFishGuy 11-24-2013 03:34 PM

It floats.

Oh. Oh good, then this is entirely justifyable. Thanks Dave!
now go play with Kush :P

Mercutio 11-24-2013 03:38 PM

I'll make sure that's specified in its new SC.

EmeraldGoblin 11-24-2013 03:43 PM

No, it's yes.

My bad.

Whimsy 11-24-2013 05:23 PM

I forget: Does Rest cost energy to start?
I guess not but.

Emi 11-24-2013 05:25 PM

I don't believe Rest costs any energy.

I don't have a cited source but then again I've never seen this asked soo...

Mercutio 11-24-2013 05:28 PM

Whimsy 11-24-2013 05:44 PM

Ah. Thanks.
For some reason I thought I remembered getting told that Rest used energy to start with.
I might have been confusing it with Giga Drain.
In fact, I'm 99% sure it was Giga Drain I asked about now.

Can priority moves mildly surprise opponent which gives the user time to do their next move? Or no?

Eg: Aqua Jet then Swift.

Kindrindra 11-24-2013 06:03 PM

It... Depends. Generally not, but I've been known to allow combos for increased energy cost.

Figured I'll ask some of the more experienced members here before addressing this with the ref right away. I feel bad, I've had quite a few disagreements with them (the ref) so far, but after he/she's explained things I've went with it. I feel like I'm being rude, so before I go badgering them again maybe someone could look at this last reffing of theirs? I feel like Icy Wind should've reacted different in this instance, maybe at the least it should've cooled the water enough to prevent a burn. Though clearly things played out different. Does anyone else feel like perhaps I should bring this up with the ref, or am I just plain wrong?

Sneaze 11-24-2013 07:41 PM

Scald's a pretty fast attack, and it would take a decent amount of time for an Icy Wind to really suck the heat out of it. There's no reason it should have much weakened a high powered stream of water with or without the water being heated. In my opinion the reffing's fine.

And for the record, it's always better to politely talk things out with the ref than it is to bring it up elsewhere. Going over the ref's head really shouldn't happen, in that the ref should be able to explain his actions, or be the one to ask the question if the dispute continues.

PROXIMA 11-24-2013 07:45 PM

Fair enough. Wasn't trying to go over anyone's head. I just felt bad badgering him all the time and wanted to know if I was just being a total nub and had no reason to bring this up to him at all.

Jerichi 11-24-2013 08:03 PM

If you don't want to post in the thread, a friendly VM is just fine and usually a little better received.

EmeraldGoblin 11-25-2013 05:05 AM

in asb world.... secret power is a special based energy attack, right?

does a playgroud have grass? XD

PROXIMA 11-25-2013 05:03 PM

Alright since I suck at understanding things, Icy Wind vs Incinerate. Would the wind be enough to douse the flames?

Ehhhhhhh I guess. I dunno, some do, some have wood chips, and other have rubber scraps from old tires. Best to ask the ref.
