I saw this series as a torrent yesterday, and after realizing it's so old there's no info on it, I decided to try it out and see how interesting it was. Suffice to say, I have been pleased.
Basic story is, circa 1982 this kid and his cat steal a Volkswagon Beetle and is trying to evade the police, who have given chase. He's apparently a suspect for a crime, though he admits innocence. As he enters this one city (probably Tokyo), during the "largest typhoon of the century", during which he veers off of the road - as his car is falling, the "eye" of the hurricane rips a hole in space, and he gets sucked into sucks him up and he lands in "Neo Tokyo" around 2052. His beetle happens to crash into the car of a traffic cop, Claude, who tries to arrest him (the kid lost his memory, but he remembered he was running from the police) and he is nearly captured by a crime syndicate that wants him to fight for them, since they believe the 'Urashiman' who slipped through the timeslip has super-powers (given by alterations to his body through worm-hole travel). Basically, they were experimenting with time travel and brought this guy from the past into the future, though he doesn't really have super-powers, yet they are nevertheless interested in him.
This police inspector finds the kid and names him Urashima Ryuu, since he doesn't remember his own name, and hires him as a special agent of the mechanoid division of the Neo Tokyo police to combat the crime syndicate that wanted to capture him. He does so as "Urashiman", who looks like Robo Cop (more likely Robo Cop ripped off his design), who is a cool armoured guy that has some special abilities. He equips in his "Magna Beetle", a retro-fitted version of the beetle he stole, as uses a "Magna Pistol", an upgraded pistol. These tools set him apart from the rest of the police who use lasers and flying cars.
He eventually (episode two) forms a fighting squad with three people - Claud, the womanizing traffic cop (who got a promotion) and his superior, Sophie, a Catholic nun who he ran into while running from Claud who just happened to be so kick-arse, the police inspector decided to hire her.
...
Anyway, the show's action is OK, and the animation really good in some parts, but the defining aspect of the show is humour. It is funny. I was chucking a bit in the first couple episodes, but by episode four I was overcome, it was GREAT. Who would have though a police chase could be so cool? There's almost no fanservice, either - there are some leg shots of Sophie, but that's it (I'm very happy about this, since I actually like leg fanservice to some extent).
Urashima Ryuu went over a lot of development too, in a short period of time. He started out as a dumb kid running from the cops, to a pretty darn cool and intelligent cop. As said before, he doesn't have super-powers, but he sure kicks a lot of arse as-is.
There's fifty two episodes of this show, and I'm on five. Not many beyond this have been subbed, but it is quite an interesting series to dive into. Do taste it, dear reader, if you have time.
