My PS3 died halfway through the first day of the New Year. This would be her second death and I don't think I want to dish out the money to bring back from the dead. Anyway, it'd be nice to have a newer model with the wifi, heck, might even buy a 360 instead.

R.I.P Old Susan,
you were the little sister I never had.

When did you buy the PS3? How often did you turn the machine on (daily, weekly, monthly)? How often did you use the machine in a given session (<1 hour, 1-2 hours, 2+ hours)? Just curious because I still haven't bought either a PS3 or an XBox 360 and of course I've heard horror stories from both sides of the fence. Curious to hear what your own thoughts are as to whether the PS3 is "built Ford tough" or whether it's a fragile P.O.S. that breaks should you so much as sneeze in its general direction.

Sorry to hear that it broke. I was pretty sad when my XBox died in Summer 2007 (it was 5˝ years old), so I can relate. You have a collection of games that you love that you, should you not buy another PS3, will ~never be able to play again.

I guess the questions I'd ask myself if I were in your position would be:
(1) how badly am I going to miss playing my old PS3 games?
(2) how many more PS3 games are there on the horizon that I expect I would definitely buy if I had a working PS3?
(3) how many games are there on the XBox 360 that aren't on the PS3 and that I would definitely buy if I were to go and get an XBox 360 instead?

And I'd try to assess the net gains and losses from the purchase of either console.

I may have overused my PS3 more than the average user, for awhile it was my only source of Internet access. I'd say that I used it daily for 2+ hours at a time, not nessisarrily for gaming, but for movies and web browsing and such. The first time I had to repair I think it was due to a broken/dirty lens. Luckily enough, I was able to find an Asian guy who could replace it for $100, which was less than Far less than Sony wanted for it. I own the bulky "Fat" version of the Playstaion, which has endured its fair share of abuse (yeah, I smacked her around when she didn't eject my my disc), so I might not be able to fairly judge how the newer models might handle my daily media needs. This old gal certainly lasted longer than I thought, only complaint is that bastard fan that ran too loud.

Ask Yourself:
1. Eh, i have a decent collection of games. Quite a few newer titles that I never got the chance to play. A larger collection of blu ray discs, but I guess I could use that blu ray player that has collected dust over the years.

2. This is very concerning, I have terrible luck when it comes to consoles. I bought an Xbox a few months before the 360 was made available. And $229 is far less than than what my original ps3 costed, so it won't be much of a financial burden if I wanted a new one.

3. Tbh, it doesn't really matter which system has exclusive games to their brand. Never was much of a hardcore gamer. I would like to give KH3 a play whenever they decide which consol it will be released by.

Well, I can safely say I wont be racing to Best Buy to purchase anything soon, at least until I do some research on PS/Xbox's future ventures.

Edit: Never factored in Xbox's Kinect or the PS3's move, I mean, what if I want to play with my fake Tiger or dance like a 'tard. Food for thought.

It's hard to predict the future with game consoles. The original XBox's life cycle was only what? 4 years? (It came out in November 2001 and, iirc, the 360 came out in 2005, right?) But the 360's life cycle has already been 6+ years (2005-2011 and now into 2012 we go) and there still isn't any sign that Microsoft is rarin' to unveil a new console. Nintendo, meanwhile, has already made quite clear their plans to release a new console, so I guess I would say that you should probably hold off (if you can) until E3 this May. Wait to see if either Sony or Microsoft announce their plans to release a new console that will leave Nintendo eating dust once again in the tech specs department.

The Question Everyone Wants the Answer To...

As a result, the question on everyone's mind is, when will the PlayStation 4 see the light of day?!?!? While Sony has not released any official information concerning the system's future launch, the generally accepted release date is pegged as late 2012, which would follow the trend of Sony's previous console generations. The PlayStation 1 was first released in late 1994 in Japan and 1995 throughout the rest of the world. The PlayStation 2 hit stores in 2000, giving the PS1 a retail shelf life of 6 years from its Japanese launch. Likewise, the PlayStation 3 came out in 2006, 6 years after the release of the PS2. Following this trend that Sony has established would give us a late 2012 release for the PS4.

Other rumours have also circulated of late which backs up these claims. At last year's Game Developer's Conference in Germany, the CEO of Crytek announced that his company's development of their next-generation graphics engine, the CryEngine3, will release in 2012, around the same time as the PlayStation 4. Although he stated he had no concrete information that the PS4 would be released around this time, and that even if he did, he would not be at liberty to share that information, he expected this to be the release window of the new system.

Don't know how reliable this source is (http://www.ps4playstation4.com/ps4-release-date-countdown-begins) but it seems legitimate believable. If its true what they say about not pushing the ps3 to its potential, I wonder why they'd bother releasing a new consol when they can improve on the current. :?

The PS3 is notoriously more difficult to code for than either the Wii or the 360. This is part of the reason it has so much untapped power but is also part of the reason why you might expect a PS4. No PS4 means Sony expects coders to quit bitching and to start learning how to write for the PS3 instead of for "one size fits all" multi-platforms. Yes PS4 would mean that they've abandoned this plan for reconciliation with game developers instead.

After all the stuff I've read about early ps3s dying I'm basically counting the days until mine goes. -_- I used mine heavily early on mostly for PS2 games (PSU!) but once that was over with only sparingly when I had something new to play or old PS/PS2 game to replay so I'm not entirely sure how mines fairing.

Its bad luck to have it die after all the holiday promos/sales ended! I think if ya got enough games on other systems to play right now, maybe sit back an not worry about your PS3 for the time being. Save up some money an hope for a sale or price drop in the meantime. If its your main or only place for gaming then I don't see any point in "switching teams" at this stage in the generation.

I don't think mine was ps2 compatible, even though I was promised that at the retailer, that bastard lol. But I hope yours will tough it out long enough for decent sales, I didn't have the will power to wait for Christmas or the new ps4 release for prices to drop. Twenty-seven days, that was when I finally gave in and bought a 320GB model. Came with Uncharted 3, wasn't much of fan of the first even though it creeped me out at times, I found myself emotional drawn to the characters this time.. Might've even teared up once or twice.. maybe >>.. Anyway, it was the news of GTA 3 & Vice City coming to PSN that had me sold. Two of the first few Sony games I was introduced to at a tender age.
