Out of curiosity to see just how immersive they could make a game, some guys on a British tv show decided to use Battlefield 3 as an opportunity to create a realistic game simulator, or, at least as realistic as they could.

For those who don't want to watch, or would rather skip to the end, the lowdown is this:

- Giant igloo shaped tent as a room to facilitate the game
- 5 HD projectors hanging from the ceiling to give a 360 degree view screen
- Shifting ambient lighting to reflect the atmosphere in game
- A type of slow moving treadmill that encompasses the entirety of the floor to simulate walking, so that when your character is prompted to walk a certain direction on screen, you would as well
- Paintball guns in all corners of the tent to fire at the player when the player in the game gets shot
- A replica gun with iron sights and built in motion tracking to track movement of the gun on screen.
- Hunting clothes and paintball helmet to at least semi-simulate the wearing of the uniform

The end results were good, the player wound up getting shot several times and was in what seemed to be quite a bit of pain from the outcome, though it could have been overdramatic.

About 5 or 6 years ago, I watched a special on PBS that detailed the history of video games and where they would be in the future, and this is pretty spot on of what they said a game in the future would be like. Is it something I want? After playing the Wii, and no longer liking motion controls after I thought it would be the way to go, no, it isn't. Is it something I want to try and wouldn't mind doing as a way to exercise? Fuck yes.

This seems like it'd make me hurl in under 10 minutes. Very motion sick-prone, if it isn't juuuuuuuuuuust like reality, my body's going to be able to tell and the mismatch between what it's seeing on the screen and what it's feeling with my feet and gravity and stuff is going to make hurl chunks. :|

Neat, though. I would definitely like to see us achieve The World (.hack//SIGN) or the Holodeck (ST:TNG). Dunno if either's possible in our lifetimes -- certainly The World would be long before the Holodeck -- but it'd be nice to live long enough to see these happen.

I hear that, I felt weird the first time I ever played CoD Modern Warfare and felt incredibly sea sick on the ship in the storm level, where it was rocking back and forth, which is odd, because I've never had a game do that to me before or since. I also didn't know I could get sea sick!

I wouldn't rule out either being impossible in our lifetimes, but you're right, it's probably not going to happen, but this is definitely a really cool and interesting step along the way!

Oh, how did I forget to mention this? Of course this topic reminds one of the Perry Bible Fellowship comic "Game System": http://pbfcomics.com/134/
