"Cloverfield" is the code name of an upcoming science fiction film produced by J. J. Abrams, directed by Matt Reeves, and written by Drew Goddard. First publicized in advance screenings of Transformers, the secret project is slated for a January 18, 2008 release.

Right, so this is the next crazy thing to get the internet buzzing. The film involves a monster of some sort attacking New York. There's been so many theories on this so far, and there's only a few minutes long trailer. It's insane. Oo; There's things ranging from "It's the new Godzilla movie!" to "It's Voltron! VOLTRON DAMNIT!". There's also rumours going around that it's going to be a Cthulhu movie.

As for the actual style of the film, it's going to be seen through the perspective of people involved, in a sort of Blair Witch thing. Like the trailer, where people keep looking at the camera, they're actually looking at somebody. xd

I'm sooo excited about this, but that's probably only because it's produced by JJ Abrams, who co-created Lost. =D However, even people who hate JJ are super-excited about this, so hopefully the film will live up to the hype. If it doesn't, people are going to be WAY disappointed.

So, watch the trailer, get involved in the madness and discuss. =3

Madness nothing. Way to be a cog in the Hype Machine. ¬¬ *my sentiments after watching the trailer* It looks like just another Godzilla movie. Without even reading your post (and watching the trailer first), that was my own thought, and I agree with the people who share that view. :| It's just a Godzilla movie. "Oh no. Magical monster attacks New York. New Yorkers unite to defeat monster. New York rules." Ugh, give me a friggin' break. :x I'm so fucking sick and tired of all these "New York"-centric movies. Yeah, it may be the biggest city in the world, but this is like 10x more annoying (and more prevalent) than the whole "ohmygod, like, 50% of animes take place in Tokyo" thing. -_-;

*snore* Unless this movie has a genuinely cool plot (which we're not going to be able to know until 6 months from now at the soonest), there's no reason to go see this over renting Godzilla, Independence Day, Spider-Man, or any one of a million other movies that involve monsters and supervillains attacking metropolitan areas. Edit: Oh yeah, and how could I forget King Kong, only the newest in the long list of movies which pit NYC against supernatural creatures. :roll:

It will have a genuinely cool plot. And if it doesn't, I'll 100% agree with your post. But until that happens, I'm gonna be all psycho about it. =P

People on teh webz are sad. Just found two things:

http://www.larswissing.dk/test4.jpg

Looks like a dinosaur, which backs up the Godzilla thing. However, could be photoshopped, cos I've looked and seen nothing like it in the trailer. The second thing is that somebody's worked out the exact position of where the statue's head falls. And apparently it's 3 miles away from Liberty Island. SAD-PEOPLE. >>;

So for the film, the monster needs to be big, aquatic, and able to throw 3 miles. Great, that narrows it down to about 100 different things. ¬¬

Edit: Also, quick note. I want it to be Cerberus. Dunno why. xD I just think it'd be cool if, say, souls escaped from hell, and Cerberus has to break through to our planet to get them back.

Tokyo and Mexico City are much bigger (in terms of actual physical size and population) than New York.

Also, Independence Day was awesome. You know, the explosions and everything...

It's one of those films that has the following enjoyment plot for me ...

I never liked Independence day. Dunno why. Just didn't.

Anyway, turns out that picture I found it fake. Just ignore it. xd

We first saw it at different ages, perhaps. I saw it in theaters at the age of 11. I think that's probably part of the reason why I loved it when I first saw it: old enough to understand most of what's going on, young enough to have a completely suspended sense of reality and very low expectations for a sci-fi thriller.

>>J. J. Abrams

I initially mistook this name as "J.J. Braham" and thought, "he's out of prison? And making multi-million dollar movies?"

Ahh well, I needed that today.

Some new news.

• One movie that Abrams is casting Grunberg in is the buzzerific disaster flick known only by its myriad working titles (i.e., Cloverfield, 1-18-08, Slusho). "It'll probably be something where no one will be able to tell it's me," he said. "As you know, J.J. calls me his good-luck charm, so he's got to put me in there somewhere. I actually went to the set the other night, and it was really exciting and cool. The budget is not astronomical. But they're doing incredible things."

Greg Grunberg's probably best known from Alias and Heroes in case you had no idea who he was. So, the budget's not very big, but they're doing incredible things. Is that a contradiction? xd I doubt it, but it seems for incredible, you'd need a big budget. I'm hoping I'm wrong though. :P

Since I'm bored, and only just remembered this thread, here's a few updates on the film.

Abrams has said it's not a monster we've seen before, it's completely new. Good?[/*:m:2eb81]
The film is driving certain blog-runners insane in their search for clues. :P (http://cloverfieldclues.blogspot.com/)[/*:m:2eb81]
It's not a sequel to a previous film, which should be pretty obvious, considering it's a new monster.[/*:m:2eb81]
Monster's Roar. (http://cloverfieldclues.blogspot.com/2007/08/1-18-08com-comes-back-with-roar.html) Strangely, I haven't listened to it yet, so I can't really say what is is. >>[/*:m:2eb81]
Ooh, and the official poster was released, only there's four of them. Same picture, but different titles. Which is kind of annoying. >>; Here's the one without the title:[/*:m:2eb81]

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/b/b4/Abrams_1-18-08.jpg

Claw marks on the Statue. That means the creature has HANDS. :P And it can swim. And make noise. And make a big fireball. So, ftw lol.

There's probably been more info released about it, but that's all I could be bothered to find. >>

Also edited the title of the thread to include most titles. A few others are stuff like "Chocolate" and "Cheese", which are the names they've been filming under.

Woo, revival of thread! :D The official trailer's been released for the film. Watch here. (http://cloverfieldclues.blogspot.com/2007/11/cloverfield-trailer-first-hand-look.html)

And because I doubt anybody cares, I'm gonna mention some stuff from the trailer. :P Seems like there are smaller monsters as well as the huge one (which is actually in this trailer! even if it is only for about a millisecond, then gone lol). At some point, it shows this girl behind a tarp of some sort being attacked by these two things.

So, it seems it's like Ameri-zilla with big and small monster-thingies. Then again, could just be two guys grabbing some girl. Kinda looks like humans. Could be HUMAN-MONSTER GUY!

Okay, forget that last part.
