I doubt it will have any major impact on single player. And by how they describe it, it seems like multiplayer will be a separate game within the game to give you bonuses, like Dead Rising 2's multiplayer gave you extra money.

Yes, this is true. I'm more or less hoping they do the multiplayer right if they're going to do it at all. They should use Uncharted 2's multiplayer as an example of good third person mutliplayer done right. Haven't played GoW, so I can't comment on that.

Would multi-player be game-breaking? I don't know fudge about Mass Effect's single player campaign, but having multiple players didn't really help much in Baldur's Gate.

The multiplayer is separate from the story mode. You do a conquest/domination style battle vs. computer controlled enemies. Each conquest rewards your single player character with various bonuses (seems like money). It's not necessary or game impacting (aside from getting bonuses).
