A while back my brother was looking on a website of the top 500 Movies of all time, and strangely enough he finds The Castle in the Sky in the Top 100. He's not much of an anime fan, he watches one piece every now and then, but for this, he declared that we need to get it.

So we got it, and wow, it is a great movie!

Done by Studio Ghibli, it's a children's movie, about a boy named Pazu who finds a girl floating down from the sky, a legend of an ancient city floating in the sky, a strange blue crystal that seems to be the key to the legend, and those evil enough to use the girl and the Crystal to make the power of the ancient city theirs.

The plot is pretty good, and the characters are fun and developed, though the story seems short, and there were a few silly and implausible moments.

The best part of it though is the feeling of the world that's conveyed, a place of wonder, simplicity, history, and nostalgia. With beautiful vistas and curious technology, along with fun and at times, awe-inspiring, beautiful music, it really seems more then it is, and definitely worth the watch if you haven't seen it.

In my opinion, I would call it, "timeless." And I was greatly inspired when I watched it, and felt nostalgic all throughout watching it.

It also converted me completely to steampunk. ^^; (I was already leaning that way slightly, it just pushed me over the edge.)

Probably one of the most celebrated Japanese films of all time, I still haven't gotten around to watching this one. ^^; So my ability to respond to the thread is pretty limited. Sorry for that.

The first part of my reply is the somewhat off-topic post here (http://forums.upnetwork.net/showpost.php?p=271824&postcount=3214) about another steampunk series, Last Exile.

The second part of my reply are just some general questions. What other Studio Ghibli films have you seen? What other steampunk animes have you seen? It'd be interesting to see where you're coming at Laputa from with respect to both of these genres.

Well, get to it then! :) It's a good movie.

Hmm, I didn't know about the original for Last Exile. Thanks for notifying me, I'll reply further in that thread.

Well, to be honest, since we just got Castle in the sky, I haven't seen any other Studio Ghibli films yet, though they had previews for them on the movie, and some of them looked pretty good.

I'm rather sparse on steampunk anime. ^^; There was the Last Exile that was going to air this fall I was planning on watching, but mostly I've been aware of the genre through MMOs, similar elements in certain live-action films, and Wikipedia. And maybe some other things I've forgotten in the distant past. I was going to ask later for recommendations of steampunk anime though.

Though, after becoming converted, I've done more research on the net about it, and just find it more and more appealing.

Also stoked for the 3 Musketeers movie coming out soon, even though airships aren't in the book, it looks awesome.
