View Full Version : What would you do if UPN died tomorrow?

Seven years after Jaxel's creation of the Universal Pokemon Network webforums*, I was just thinking about how I may have to cut off (or at least severely cut down on) my connection to this community come August 15th. Thinking about that led me to wonder what I and other members would do if Kuno's Ultimate Pokemon Network forums were to vanish tomorrow, much as Jaxel's did on April 1, 2001. Would we all disband? Would some of us make our way over to BMG or SPPf and begin "a new life" there? Would somebody speak up and create his own webforum hosted on his own server, and we would witness the dawn of the third major generation of UPNs? I don't know. That's why I'm making this thread and asking you to answer this question. :) What would you do if UPN vanished for good tomorrow?

(For sake of argument, you have no prior notification, and it is irrepairably gone. Kuno cannot be reached by AIM or even by telephone, and you have reason to believe that any data that was stored here is lost for good.)

If it were me, I would probably log onto AIM every time I got on the computer and try to figure out what the hell was going on. (Days 1, 2, and 3.) I suppose I would get a lot of anime watching and med school preparations done sooner than anticipated. Then, maybe after a week or so of UPN being down, if "the survivors" had migrated to BMG, I'd probably start posting there up until med school and then sort of slip away for four years. Maybe. If everybody migrated to SPPf, I'd probably bite the bullet and sign up for the next three weeks, but then (again) vanish for several years since there's no point in working hard to build up a reputation at a community that you hate and that hates you back. Certainly not when you're busy trying to become a doctor.

I would probably kick myself in the pants a little to do something I've been wanting to do for sometime -- write some letters to Namek as a sort of "pen pal" thing. If I could reach Doppel and Mcsweeney on AIM, I'd extend the same offer to them. I'd also probably try to do "2-Man Baseball" with Kuno and Loki, and anybody else who wants to communicate orally. Oh yeah, that reminds me, gotta give Kuno my cell phone number once I get a cell phone. >_< Stuff like that.

Hmm ... yeah. I dunno. I guess that's a good enough answer for now. ^_^;

* date varies depending on the source. Jaxel has disagreed about the alleged June 19, 1999 date before, so there is no universally agreed-upon date for UPN's BBS's first day of life.

I don't get any letters. Probably afraid I'd sign my responses to them as Talon87.

I imagine I'd still talk to most of the UPNers on AIM and MSN and move on to SPP, staying well out of non ASB and non FB areas forever.

I can't believe I used to mod Misc. and General Pokemon Discussion there.

A lot of my connection to UPN is gone since the old forums are gone, lost a lot of my good friends (the closest one I made I actually live with though, so it's not like I can miss her), but I'd still miss the massive bitchfests when Talon/Dami/Namek/Lindz/Reed have discussions.

I'd feel bad because UPN is, as Loki so eloquently put it once, "like a hometown" - BMG was where I came from, but the current BMG is really the dominion of new Pokemon fans and the UPN equivalent of my BMG is comprised of the same uneducated gits who caused mayhem way back when. >_>

One of the highlights of UPN is the "civil, mature, professional" discussion that cannot be found at Arlong Park or Yotsuba. Mozz, Talon, and Namek both have expertise in a great many trades I have yet (or likely never will) master, and those younger than myself are proceeding down the same pathway. So, loosing this forum would be a rather major blow for one who enjoys that kind of talk.

'tis why, despite dami's shift from vb to phpBB (which I detest, really) and the nefariously slow loading times, I still come here and usually write my better posts. I've grown tired of mudslinging at AP and Yotsuba dulls the brain after a while - UPN washes my mind with almost each visit.

I would, however, host the FB related material on the old Team Rocket ezBoard if people needed a space to continue their battles and such - the place is a relic to be sure, but it's probably the only still-existing vestige of the original "Bulbasaur's Mysterious Garden", outside of the people who went there and still remember what it was like there.

Well, that doesn't sound good at all. :(

Well, you know, I'd be pretty damn sad about that. This is my "safe place" on the internet, a small community where everyone knows everyone and there are no flamers. I certainly would not go to BMG. Also, what is SPPf?

That'd be totally sweet. I'd hate to lose contact with you for four years. In fact, I'd be pretty damn sad about it.

Be sure to get my cell phone number as well, now that I have one.

Well, Gary has a copy of his campaign on the comp, and I save all my replies. Soooo, yeah, pretty much nothing changes for me, except I don't go here.

I'd threaten Kuno with considerable pain until he brought it back up. xp.

I probably really wouldn't "do" anything. I'll just become a silent anime watcher, because this is really the only place I feel free to talk about my anime experiences. Everyone else I run into is immature loli freaks. I'd probably ignore my AIM more than usual as well (I ignore it quite a bit already).

Oh no. :x I think I speak for everyone in the Anime Forum when I say you are one of the coolest and happiest new additions to this community in years plural. You've brought so much enthusiasm and energy into the forum and Doppel, Mcsweeney, and I have all enjoyed talking with you. (Won't speak for Loki or Namek since they've been rare lately in that forum.)

When your regular life schedule is awaken-eat-work-eat-work-eat-sleep-repeat, you tend not to have much time for new anime shows to watch. And now most of my free days are taken up by either more sleep, Pokemon, and trying to get stuff ready for my business, and a piss horrible 56k connection, there's not really much I can do about my watching new anime situation.

After Chobits, I became totally burnt out on anime. I haven't watched one since, except for a few episodes of PPD.

Also, birtha is really cool and nice.

I tell you what: I would definitely not relocate to BMG if UPN died.

(already posted in FBTO, so if you saw it there, there's nothing new to see)

Promised myself I wouldn't do it ... promised myself I wouldn't do it ... *sigh* I do have to sort of pat myself on the back for not ripping into the third-to-last link (below) and just saying, "You know what? You're not worth my time, kid" (as I did in the second-to-last link).

Talon complains about kids arguing "market value" for Pokeyman (http://bmgf.bulbagarden.net/showpost.php?p=387014&postcount=55)
Troll rises to the challenge! (http://bmgf.bulbagarden.net/showpost.php?p=387116&postcount=56)
Talon gives him an honest, if lengthy, reply (http://bmgf.bulbagarden.net/showpost.php?p=387127&postcount=57)
Troll shows no respect! Nor intelligence! (http://bmgf.bulbagarden.net/showpost.php?p=387138&postcount=58)
Talon gives Troll some advice, in case he's not really a troll (http://bmgf.bulbagarden.net/showpost.php?p=387143&postcount=59)
He's a troll, alright! A right stupid one, at that! (http://bmgf.bulbagarden.net/showpost.php?p=387160&postcount=60)
Talon says, "You know what? You fail it. I'm going to go study some more anatomy now." (http://bmgf.bulbagarden.net/showpost.php?p=387163&postcount=61)
Troll tries to get Talon to go back on his word (http://bmgf.bulbagarden.net/showpost.php?p=387164&postcount=62)

But Talon never does. :| Painful as it is to let it go, I'm letting this one go. Not worth the effort. Unlike with Lindsay or Chaos or Mozz or anybody I've ever argued with here ... I don't even know the guy. Oh well. With any luck, college will teach him what it truly means to have a civil, intelligent debate. If not, BMG will be waiting for him. :P :x

If right now you're thinking, "Talon, you're as bad as this kid, linking us to all this stuff," all I have to say is ...
1 - let me vent. -_-; Please. You have no idea how tempting it was to keep arguing with this turd. And
2 - I thought it would be entertaining proof for why BMG is only barely better than SPPf. Sorry, BMG. We don't have people this dumb at UPN. :| If you're here, it means you beat this guy at life. Congratulations.

Also, if any of you are harboring sympathies towards his "7 years old" mistake, I caution you not to, lest you wish to incur my disrespect, too. Look at my BMG signup date. It says "Apr 2003." It's right next to my name. Y'know, the name he had to click on (like the little troll he is) to see what my "birthday" is. So if this moron honestly thinks that a 3½ year old is capable of signing up at BMG, then he's even stupider than we took him for. Do not sympathize with his error. -_-; Few people could be as dense as this buffoon.

Namek, in a couple days I'm going to post a topic that isn't about anime per se, but I feel you would be compelled to read and perhaps participate in. That might be your gateway "back in" so to speak.

Oh wow. o_o

You had quite the patience for that fellow - I would have ignored him when he echoed the polarizing rhetoric of "you're either with us or with the terrorists" in that first post.

The part that makes me laugh the most (and I pray to God is the ONE PART which will stand out to even the most diehard fans of his) is where he tells me, "No, Talon, that's where you're wrong. You give the cloners too much credit. All of their charity is in YOUR head." Never mind that it's laughably "I know what you are, but what am I?" logic (hooray, 4 year olds! ¬¬), but it's flagrantly false. Muyo has politely offered to clone for people. Kuno is a nice guy who has cloned for himself and would probably clone for others if arsed to. Blastoise clones iirc, and is a totally nice dude. And frankly, I would also clone (if I wasn't so worried about losing my game or my rights to WiFi), and I don't think I'm a bad evil son a bitch, either. He makes these sweeping generalizations. Just like you said, he sees the world in Black & White, "with us or against us," and anybody who is against him is automatically 100% wrong. "Guilty before proven innocent." Typical high school eTroll.

I wouldn't go to BMG or anywhere else, I rarely watch anime anymore (never more than one or two episodes a week, if that) and don't have much patience for young fans who think the current trendy anime are the bestest ever. I'd probably just assume that anyone who wanted to keep in contact with me would have added me to their AIM, YIM, etc list already.
