I bought the XL from a friend for about $100.
Was this a good deal or did my friend rip me off?

If you already had a DS, then I'd say you got ripped off. If not, then you did all right.

I think the concept of any portable XL is stupid and counter-intuitive.

Hmm, if it was in good condition, I'd say it wasn't a bad deal, but I would have tried bartering for less, like around ~$85. If he argued, I would have used the point that he'd be getting a lot more for it than GameStop would give him, or something. Anyway, not a bad deal, not an amazing deal. It went okay.

I have a phat, a lite, and now an XL. There really isn't any issue here.

You have three DSes? I... Wow. Virtual Boy owners have made better decisions.

I have an XL. I find it reasonably portable still, and it suits my oversized hands.

If you don't have anything good to say, don't say it at all.

But you asked people to tell you whether or not you got ripped off. He wasn't all that rude: a little cheeky, maybe, but he was simply telling you "Okay, it's official: you got ripped off."
As for whether you got ripped off or not ...
eBay results for DS XL (all) (http://shop.ebay.com/i.html?_nkw=nintendo+ds+xl) - prices are typically in excess of $100
eBay results for DS XL (used models only) (http://shop.ebay.com/i.html?rt=nc&LH_ItemCondition=12&_nkw=nintendo%20ds%20xl&_fln=1&_ssov=1&_trksid=p3286.c0.m282) - prices are still typically in excess of $100
There's one here (http://cgi.ebay.com/Nintendo-DS-XL-Mario-system-travel-kit-games-/260816219867?pt=Video_Games&hash=item3cb9dbaedb) for $85 that includes four games (three of them are meh but one of them is Mario Kart DS). That would make your deal look positively sour, but there's just one problem: the auction has four days of life left in it. If the other prices on the site are any indication, I doubt that this will remain below $100 by the time the auction ends. (Also of note: shipping is listed as $11.50, so really it's already at $96.50, a meager $3.50 cheaper than what you paid your buddy for yours.)
Do I think a DS XL is worth $100? Probably. Would I pay $100 for one? Absolutely not. I'm looking at either what's beyond the 3DS or else begrudgingly the 3DS itself. The time for buying DSes is long since past. The only reason I can think of for buying a DS at this stage in the game is to have backwards compatibility with GBA games -- and that's something the XL model is missing anyway.

Just wanted to build on this one little statement here a little, putting aside the actual 'worth' of the system and whatnot, what this really boils down to is do you feel like you got a good deal? Do you feel that you got the value out of your dollar for the product? These are the questions you should be asking yourself. For example, Talon said he thinks a DSi XL is probably worth $100, but he wouldn't pay $100 for it. Why? Because the value of a DSi XL to Talon just doesn't meet up with what he perceives of it's actual value to him. Now, I can't say for sure, but if a guy tried to sell Talon a good condition XL for say, $15-$25, I'm willing to bet he'd take it.
tl;dr - individual worth /= individual value

Heyyyy! Whats wrong with having doubles of a handheld? I got 2 GBCs, 4 different GBAs, and 2 different DS's!
$100 isn't the price I'd pay since I love my Lite and the DSi's don't love GBA games. I really like the look of the XLs though so I wouldn't mind having one in the future. Maybe for $50 during black friday 2012?

Why so serious? All of the time?

Hey, Lindz... I bet a 3DS would be half the price it is now for black friday 2012 somewhere... why not go for that instead?

Half the price? :? That'd be nice, but I'm having a hard time seeing it. Current price is $250, right? I think Nintendo will stubbornly lower the price (at most) to $200 by this year's end. And only because Sony is forcing their hand. But I can't see them dropping the price past this point for quite some time -- because they believe, even if we don't, that they have a killer line-up for their handheld which no one else can match and which is to die for.

Well, when I said half the price, I was more or less imagining there will be a door buster sale somewhere, such as Target or Best Buy, taking a loss on the system purchase in hopes they can sell some games or accessories to make up for the losses. If you look at it this way, it may not be too hard to believe, although then again, halving the price means taking it down to $125... so maybe you have a point. Maybe more around $150 or so... or even $179 with a free $50 gift card, or something.
Jeri... I'm starting to honestly think this guy is 90% troll...

Cause if they're not gonna make a DS Micro then a DS Macro is the next best thing! My $50 GB Micro obtained on that crazy shopping day years ago has served me well even though I had no real reason to get one! Guess I'm just an impulsive shopper sometimes! At $50 even a PSP No would be appealing and I'm not even into the whole digital purchase thing! A $125 3DS would be something to look at but until the games are there I couldn't really say I would or wouldn't wait it out. There aren't any released or announced 3DS games I gots any interest in yet.
