Listening to the song reminded me of how many video games I would love to see re-written once we achieve a level of graphics mastery which rivals human visual perception of the real world. Shenmue, Xenosaga, Ocarina of Time, and Wind Waker all fit the bill.
Shoot, that reminds me ... I really should rent the new Zelda game for the GameCube, since I have no plans to get a Wii yet and before long the game's gonna go missing from Blockbuster's shelves. :|

New Update: Naming Characters (http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/gamemode/various/various02.html)
Got to admit, I thought this was useless at first look, but turns out that once you've chosen your name, you can set the controller type you use, so you don't have to change the settings over and over again.

Wow, even I, who does like and care about even the simplest trivial stuff, can't really get excited about that feature.

Yeah, it's not very exciting in the sense that you'll get the game because of it, but it is good to know you'll save about 2 seconds each time you play! :D
Add that up, and that's like...a minute a year. >>;

Nintendog (The big one from the trailer that goes to the screen :O)
Samurai Goro (Captain Falcon's rival from F-Zero)

It's like a Pokéball, except, well it basically IS a Pokéball. Why did they have to put in Goroh though? Mrs. Arrow would have been a far better choice.
Talon87
07-02-2007, 03:05 PM
If the Nintendog is basically a "nyaa nyaa, you can't see the scree~een, you can't see the scree~een :P :P :P" sort of helper ... I think it's going to quickly become the most hated Assistant. There's no skill in fighting blindly -- it's just button mashing. Unlike real-world blind martial artists who can still use sound and pressure to fight, in a video game, you're sunk without visuals. I foresee many a hotly-contested ring-out victory coming out of this Nintendog ... and my vote is therefore Nay.
I would be very delighted to see Chikorita and some of the other Pokemon be able to come out of the Assist Trophy, but unfortunately they've already got PokeBalls for that. So I guess what I'll have to settle for is hoping that we see Metroids from the Metroid universe representing. Best. Assistant. Ever. ;p
Joe: MY EYES! MY EYES!
Metroid: *SHRIEEEEEK*
Joe: AHHHHHHHHHHHH!
*Joe falls off the edge and is ringed out*

Toad can't be a capsule assist, he's already one of Peach's attacks.
Talon87
07-02-2007, 10:50 PM
I wish that one of Bowser's attacks would be to turn members of the Mushroom Kingdom into a pile of bricks for 5 seconds. It'd be a cool complex combo with sweet payoff if you pull it off against a foe using Mario/Luigi/Peach and they're standing near the edge of the ring.
Playing Wind Waker has reminded me that I think it'd be pretty cool if Link (even if he is the much-superior OoT/TP Link) was able to summon the King of Red Lions to ferry him back to "shore" if he got ringed out. Like, if you're in the air and can flawlessly execute this 20-button combo, it'll bring you back to the ring guaranteed (but can only be used once per round).

Not the famous Toad from Mario Party. :P The weird generic ones from Paper Mario. ^^
But last night, I was thinking, and a really cool assist character could be Sonic. xD That way he'd be in the game, but wouldn't be playable, and all the fanboys would wet themselves followed by tears of needing. :P
Also, update.

Talon, Smash Bros. doesn't have combos. That's what makes it good. Only combos are done with a move of the analog stick and a button press. That and chaining moves. But no combos in the sense you seen to be thinking about.
Also, why the hell would bowser have the power to turn things into bricks?
Oh, neat. Bowser. Doubt it Joe, cause Mario looks different in Galaxy than in SSBB, so I don't see bowser having all that texture in Galaxy. It will be more stylized than here.
Also, huh, they changed the face to the more normal bowser face, the one used in the mario games. This one has bigger eyes and stuff.

You think memorising an endless list of button combos makes a good game? >> That makes a boring game. And even if you take it seriously, where does it get you? Oh look, some guy who did it just won a gaming tournament in Japan.
So what? xfd
IMO, simple attack systems > complex ones.

If you really want to have this debate, I'll be happy to do it. If you want to be a childish ass, then forget it, go have fun with your Pogeymans and Smash Bwudders.
For now, assuming you seriously want to discuss this as gentlemen ... no, I'm not saying that by simple virtue of having combos a fighter is "made good" or to be taken seriously. Complexity does not necessarily equate fun, and can in fact equate years of frustration. However, whether a game is fun or not has nothing to do with whether or not it is easy because (simply) some people like a challenge and some people hate any form of challenge and want all of life's pleasures to come to them on a silver platter. SSB and SSB:M are two examples of fighters that are "silver platters," while Guilty Gear and SNK's run-of-the-mill fighter are all great examples of "you have to work hard for the rewards." There's the difference, and why I think I am (non-snobbishly) allowed to say, "SSB and SSB:M are fighters for kiddies. GGX is not."
Why is that? Well, because SSB is easier to get into. Because there are no combos, a beginner is on relatively equal footing to somebody who has played obsessively for years once several hours go by (if he's stuck to the same character and doesn't universally suck at fighters). Once you figure out the character's entire inventory of moves, it then becomes simply about in-map strategy like "Do I duck or do I go for it?", "Do I lure him to the edge of the ring or is it better to confront him mid-field?", "Is this an opponent bunny-hopping works well against or can he easily hit me?", etc. These are relevant concerns in GGX and Street Fighter, too, but here in SSB and SSB:M they are the only concerns. You don't have to worry about the foe being particularly skilled with ringing people out because in SSB:M the only way to win is the ring out (as there is no life meter) and so ring outs can be achieved even from midfield. You don't have to worry about the foe getting you up against a wall because most stages have no walls. The foe hits you 3 times and then your out of his reach (whether either of you likes it or not) because the game's physic engine demands that your body fly in the vector direction of his attacks and not stand still for an ass-whuppin'. It's a very, very simple game.
Somebody who has mastered GGX is infinitely more skilled than somebody who mastered SSB:M. Here, we have a kid dealing with a game where OHKO moves are not only present but are relatively easy to pull off -- however, you only get one shot at it. Here we have a game where over 80% of characters' moves are not listed in the manual or in the in-game tutorials. The game is incredibly involved with "reading your opponents' moves" because, if you're too slow or ineffectual at doing this, your opponent will recognize that and just key in the OHKO. You have to constantly be one step ahead of -or- on the same page as the opponent. And of course he the same with you. This creates intense battles that are beautiful to behold but usually don't involve the taking of one's life until 10 minutes into the game (since for every beautiful move one guy does, the other guy successfully dodges or blocks it). It is truly gorgeous, a spectacle to behold, as compared with the "carnival" feeling of SSB:M where people that look like claymations run around with bowling pins and whack the shit out of each other sending them flying unrealistically into outer space.
In short ... because the fighter has more combos, GGX (or other complex fighters) mandate more reading of the opponent and less mastery of "fighting basics". Because you're not only reading against fighting basics, but also against a huge list (over 100 moves per character) of possible attacks which could be coming your way. If SSB:M is "predict one of five outcomes: he jumps, he ducks, he blocks, he runs, or he attacks", GGX is "predict one of 105 outcomes." And the pros do it, every single time.

Talon's big essay. xd
Talon, I'm not going to be all childish or an ass, but I'm not going to argue back and cause a big debate either, because to be honest, I can't be bothered typing that much. xD However, I will respond to one point you made.
Why is that? Well, because SSB is easier to get into. Because there are no combos, a beginner is on relatively equal footing to somebody who has played obsessively for years
Technically, that means a person of any age, not just younglings.
...Did I seriously just say younglings? Oo; I need to stop watching Star Wars. >>;
Anyway, another point I'll respond to.
GGX is "predict one of 105 outcomes." And the pros do it, every single time.
Those pros have no life then. Oo; Either that or they're so pro they've managed to slow the passage of time everywhere in the world apart from their own room. >>;
Talon, Smash Bros was never intended to be a proper fighting game in the first place anyway. It was just Nintendo getting some of their well known characters, and basically, putting you into a "Boss Battle" with each of them, in terms of other games, that's what it's equivalent too. In some cases, such as Mario vs. Bowser, it's exactly the same. xD So gamers who like SSB are obviously gonna be biased towards it's more "fun" take on the fighting genre.
Talon87

Talon, Smash Bros was never intended to be a proper fighting game in the first place anyway.
I agree. 100%. It is as fun a game as Shonen Jump SuperStars which features Naruto, Luffy, Goku, Yami Yugi, and tons of other characters from Shonen Jump manga. I love that game, even though for a fighter it's pretty primitive. What bugs me is when people say "SSB:M is the best fighter ever," because it shows that they don't understand that SSB:M is supposed to be a novelty game, not a fighter to be taken seriously. People who say SSB:M is more fun than Tekken, VF, or DOA, fine, all the more power to them. People who say it's a better fighter, no, I'm sorry.
The way I see it ... SSB:M (and presumably SSBB) is like the Wii of fighters. It's meant to be highly-accessible to everyone, from the pros to the amateurs, from the young to the old. Anybody should be able to pick it up and have fun and not feel that it's too difficult. But necessarily, this means that the learning curve is very (very) low, and it also means that a lot of what makes fighters "epic" (like GGX's requirement to study extensively and to be able to pull off a 100-button execution for nine separate moves flawlessly otherwise you get OHKO'd) is removed from the game.
Saying one is the Wii of Fighters does not constitute an insult. The Wii is arguably the most popular console on the market. However, saying the Wii is fun and popular is not the same as saying "the Wii is a serious next-gen console." And I feel the same way (departing from our analogy) about SSB:M and other "serious" fighters.

Bobobobooboboboboboboobobobobobo is the best SJSS character.
Talon87

Bobobobooboboboboboboobobobobobo is the best SJSS character.
I prefer 6-cel Kenshin. His X and X-Up combos are very interchangeable, very fast, and one of them is a OHKO (practically always) while the other one is a 2HKO. He can do a triple jump like the ninjas (because he's Kenshin, man!), and he has some nice use of B and Y, also.
That stated, I'm really OCD about having a shitton of "mana", and as such, I have to try to form teams that have as much support as possible. I find the Naruto crew best suited for that. 5-panel Kakashi supports 5, 6, or 7-panel Naruto well. 7-panel Naruto is a lot of fun against NPCs, while 5-panel Naruto is usable against real opponents. (Of whom I've fought zero since buying the game. -.-) Then, Kakashi and Naruto mutually share a lot of promotion from Sasuke and other Naruto characters. Kenshin, on the other hand, is all by his lonesome for fighting, which means that if you want to make a "just Kenshin" deck, you've only got one fighter and maybe 8 or 9 tops for your mana bar. Instead of the 11-14 I have in my Naruto deck.
Because I don't recognize the characters from Bobobo(repeat), I haven't used them much. I'm not a big fan of Bobo himself because he's so easy to defeat, so I can't figure he'd be very good. His orange friend who is shaped like a teardrop might be better, since he's speedy as hell and seems to have a few good combos.

Is that executed by getting a random-chance item, or do you save up energy and then activate it yourself? If it's the latter, then it reminds me of GG's OHKOs. Very broken, but can be very amusing. If it's the former, then it's a little more kosher since it's random chance and everybody gets a fair shot at it.
I'd be frightened to see "Giga Mario" given how dark and realistic Giga Bowser looks. Yech. :x (at the thought of Giga Mario)

Anyway, yeah. So, I don't even know what GGX stands for. I probably have heard of the actual game. But when people say that SSB is the better fighter? They mean it is the funnest game that has fighting in it, even if it is of an unorthodox kind. Cause I am sure a lot of people, even after reading that essay don't give a flying F about this game being tougher and made for people who play the standard formula for a fighting game.
If quality is dictated by enjoyment, and a fighting game is any game that has fighting, and the person in question has the most fun with SSB, then yeah, for that person in question, it is the best fighting game.
Bit duh, don't you think?

I would have been far more excited to see Dr. Right/Light. And to see MegaMan as a playable character. Curse you, Capcom, and your falling out with Nintendo and refusal to loan them back the character which earned you millions!
Seriously, MegaMan would be nothing without the NES (1-6) and SNES (X1 through X3).

Hm, so those Assist Trophies seem to not be related to playable characters after all, or are they? When I saw the Samurai whats-his-name trophy I thought only Cpt. Falcon could get him to appear, but Dr. Wright doesn't seem to be related to any playable character, right? And neither does that Nintendog puppy..
So, do those trophies work like Pokeballs so that it's random what you get out of it or not? Someone please enlighten me =o

The bumper was sort of missed in Melee. The flipper does not have the same sort of kick the bumper had. That thing really pushed you around. It appeared in some stages as stationary, but it was an item too.

A freakin' huge laser. And when she uses it, it like...breaks her suit? I dunno, but her suit falls off. So that's how you get Zero Samus. Which kinda sucks, since as SamusInSuit, you can only ever use one Final Smash per battle. Oo;

Fan complaints? :? Lack of popularity? A million reasons, dude. There are several fighting franchises which come to mind (Street Fighter, Marvel vs. Capcom, and Shonen Jump ___Stars) which have not brought back every possible character seen in their earlier titles.
Not getting on the Ice Climbers case, since I think they are very cute and I would rather see the Ice Climbers than Plusle and Minun. Just explaining that it's possible (if not likely) that they have been replaced by their Pokemon counterparts.

Wow I didn't know there was a thread of this.
I'm a big fan of the SSB series, I don't have money to purchase a Wii, though so I doubt I will ever play this one.
Back in the times of N64 I used to be a very good player using Pikachu, beat the hell out of all my friends and went to a torunament once which I finished 3rd. When my cousin got a GC i got addicted to SSBM, but it was too different to the first SB and couldn't get used to any character until I found Zelda could turn into Sheik (duh) and I learned very well how to use her. That was like 3 weeks or so. I have't had the chance to play again, though.
Anyways, dunno why I'm telling this, I just wanted to share my experiences with the SB series.

His ship attacking Fox/Falco in an Arwing
http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/gamemode/modea/images/modea02/modea02_070803i.jpg
And in this picture, the background has clouds exactly the same as the Arwing one, so we can safely assume Pit's on board, as he doesn't appear to be flying.
It's weird, but I'm thinking Metaknight may be an antagonist. xD Edit: Not on his own, obviously. Didn't make that clear. I really want all the evil characters from games, like Bowser, Ganondorf and Metaknight to team up against the good guys. :P

In the previous titles of SSB, no one seemed to be a bad guy, but the master hand. There wasn't a "story mode" where you had to fight Bowser, Ganondorf and Mewtwo, for example.
I don't know if this SSB will be different, it would be fun to have something like that, though

As if Smash Bros. is gonna be a bad game.
I'd buy it if it was Melee with new music. And we already know it isn't even that.
So, yeah. I can see why music doesn't make the game, but the music is such an awesome thing to have. So, not caring about it seems silly.

09-08-2007, 02:17 PM
Gotta agree with AF on that one.
Music is very important in a game, at least to me..much more than Graphics at least. Couldn't play a game if it had sucky music, no matter how good it was otherwise.
But yeah, looks like Brawl is gonna have freaking awesome music. And is gonna be freaking awesome in every other way. (if they don't remove all the old characters, that is)
damn, I sure hope the price for the Wii is gonna drop sometime soon, cause I want it so bad ;_;
Sylar
09-08-2007, 05:13 PM
If you order from abroad, the exchange rate will probably make the price go much lower than where you live. Only problem is that you'd have to export all your future games, which would rule because they come out earlier in some places, but suck since you'd have to wait and probably pay more for delivery. =\ Then again, that's what AF does, you may as well ask him if it's a good idea or not. xd
But still, what you said Lee, I can easily play games without music. xd I went through my entire Diamond game without having the sound on once*. Although the music is probably going to be a big part of it, I'll be too wrapped up concentrating on what to do next to actually listen to it. :P
*Mostly because I played around other people, and they would've been annoyed by it, but still. I just don't care for the music in Poke-games. Annoying cries of the little bastards. xD

It really depends on the game. I doubt I'd play SSBM as much if it had no sound. The game would feel boring. If the music was bad, I would feel uninspired to play.
Meanwhile, horror survival games typically don't need music during much of the game, except possibly during epic moments. The eeriness of silence can have as much impact as a song.

That's a pretty good picture of them. I thought it was their official Brawl look at first.
I never really cared too much for the Ice Climbers. They did have some good smash attacks, but they just didn't suit my tastes. As for fighting against them. They were a pain in the ass. They were easy, but I specialize in one on one fights, and having to pick away two characters at a time can be a little troublesome. I can say one thing about them though. Since they can't jump very high, they are easy to spike.

Anyway, I like it. Seems like hydro pump is weak by spreads outwards, solar beam is straight while fire blast appears to shoot like a blast or most likely several ones. So, while the other moves start and continue until the end of the attack, the fire blast like shoots a couple of really strong ones. Different, so, I'm glad.

Umm, I wasn't "just hitting" it ^_^;. I had Ganondorf grab the bat, jump at the sandbag, drop it, then curb stomp the bag from the air. The bat would stop the bag from flying, and I repeated it until the time nearly run out. After that, I warlock punched the bag. It was a pretty good method, since it got a good 2800 feet. I've never even played a Mega Man game. :| I just pulled a Capcom character out of my ass. (I wasn't even being serious, but I guess it's hard to tell on the internets.)
Ryu, then?

MegaMan is a Nintendo property -- a shared Nintendo-Capcom property in the form of the titles MegaMan 1-6 (NES), X1-X3 (SNES), Zero 1-4 (GBA), and ZX 1-2 (DS). Not to mention the plethora of MegaMan side games for the GBA and DS that kids who enjoy the MegaMan anime have purchased. Is MegaMan mostly made by a 3rd party (Capcom) and just happens to be on Nintendo's consoles (NES-DS)? Yes, yes he is. But really, that's also what's become of Samus Aran (Retro Studios is as owned by Nintendo as Rare is by Microsoft -- they're still a 3rd party programming team that doesn't crossover with the main Nintendo programmers), Pikachu (The Pokemon Company, same argument), and various other "1st party" Nintendo heroes. There are very, very few Nintendo "1st party titles" that are written (code-wise), developed, and packaged by a team consisting of 80% NoJ employees. So much of Nintendo's manpower is outsourced to these smaller "Nintendo affiliates" like HAL, Retro, or TPC that really, the Blue Bomber, Zero, and maybe even some of the other Zero-storyline characters (e.g. Harpuia) shouldn't be written off so easily.
MegaMan was my #2 "yeah right, that'll never happen" wish right behind Sonic. If my #1 came true, then I have hope that #2, even if won't come true, could have. It's within the realm of possibilities now.

Spectating sure seems fun, it's a really nice idea..but with that said, it's been some time since we've seen new characters announced, about time that happens again next week.

Eh, somehow I think we don't need more new characters, at least for a while. They can be surprises.
Huh, I wasn't behind the idea of spectating before the coin betting and stickers came in. Heh, looks fun.

Well, yeah, but at least they could confirm that all the old characters will be in..Smash Bros. is not worth buying without Luigi >>

Oh you know you'll buy Brawl even if they don't announce Luigi is back because this game is so kick ass as it is!
We FB'ers already have enough problems gambling in Jirachi's Casino! Now there's Brawl Gambling... Oh n0ez!111!

BANZAI!!!!!!
I mean... BONSAI!!!!
I mean... BONSLY!!!!
Interesting way of integretating this pokemon into SSBB, although I'm more afraid of it being reflected back to me by Fox's projectile shield.

Fox's protect shield only stops energy attacks, not physical ones. And there is a new Metroid Prime stage.... swiit.

The post specifically states to watch out for Fox and his shield with a picture and this specific caption, "Oh, and it’s not like it can’t be reflected."
Metroid Prime stage seems kind of bland, but I never played the game so maybe the turning upside down part won't be so bad.

I think a lot of Kirby's transformations leave a lot to be desired, like Diddy Kong (at least give him the shirt too!) or Pikachu (I don't care if this is what it's always been, it makes him look like he's wearing a Mickey Mouse baseball cap! >_< Just give Kirby Pikachu's ears and tails and he'll be fine! No need for the eyes on top of his head!). Then they go all out with Samus Aran (suit version), and it's like, "Pfft, as if Kirby's ever even going to have the chance to suck her up."

Well, it's supposed to look like Kirby is wearing a hat or mask. Not a full on suit.

Pikmin and a Captain are new playable characters. I guess I can deduce the little astronaut dude is the guy who pulls the Pikmin out in the Pikmin game and it sounds as if you need to pull out pikmin every so often in order to survive in Brawl.

Pikmin + Captain is really disappointing. It reminds me of that shitty trophy from the last game that I could never ever get. Either way, who the frick wanted that guy? :/

I know who: the guy who developed Pikmin at Nintendo.
Laughs aside, I'm serious: I bet he was feeling left out that his brainchild was missing from this game when every other Nintendo mascot or best-seller's main character had shown up. Probably didn't help matters that so many 3rd-party franchise characters were included, as well as so many 1st-party characters from games that haven't even been released since the N64. (Diddy Kong, looking at you.) Sure, Pikmin is so 2001, but it was one of the major titles for the GC when all you could buy was either Luigi's Mansion or Pikmin. (Yeah, I know, that's not meant to be funny. Just stating the truth. But ... lol.)
In the end, it comes down to this: the Pikmin guy was probably bummed out, he probably approached the SSBB project leader, he probably used classic Japanese shaming tactics ("No, no, I'm not ....... *sigh* ....... suicidal that Pikmin isn't in SSBB or anything"), and the SSBB guy probably felt compelled to put Pikmin in. Wouldn't hurt if the Pikmin guy showed the SSBB guy Pikmin's sales figures and further guilted him into the inclusion, saying, "Look, if you're going to include Pit ..."
Seriously. I was wondering why Kid Icarus didn't make it into SSBM myself, but I think it's ridiculous, too, when Pit makes it in and Pikmin doesn't, if we forget for a moment that this game is a F-I-G-H-T-E-R and not a way for Nintendo to showcase their most successful franchises. ;)
