Hmmm. Worst comes in so many flavors. Worst dubs. Worst story. Worst art quality. Worst endings. Worst idea ever.

Here's one I can instantly say without a doubt in my heart:

Worst transition from Manga to Anime: Chrono Crusade.

Chrono Crusade's manga was exciting, fun, beautiful, sometimes sad, but still happy at the same time. The anime was just dark, sad, and totally depressing. It's like, "Hey, let's take this amazing work and throw a bunch of nonsensical religious crap in it." Yes, I know Chrono Crusade is about Rosette working as a exorcist with her demon partner Chrono, but the manga never mentioned God, Satan, or any real angle about that. Yet, the anime had to be about Mary Magdalene and some Messiah bullshit. Yes, I know the manga didn't finish by the time they did the anime. But still- way to fuck it up. I've had good friends of mine unwilling to read the manga, which is amazing, because they saw the awful anime and thought, "Holy fuck, I got depressed by that shit! I'm not touching it!" "FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF!!! The manga is way better!" "Sorry, if I think about the anime, I'll be done with it."

Worst Animation: Negima!

The first series. I don't know about the other ones. But basically, when you have someone running from the foreground into the background, I don't want to see a 5 frame animation of someone running that slowly shrinks. I mean... really. You're that lazy? I saw one episode and never ever attempted another.

Worst Story: Kampfer

This is only the most recent thing I can think of. Probably others which are way worse, but this one is the last horrible show I saw. The beginning of the show was good. Hey look, shy guy suddenly turns into hawt girl and goes all lesbian. Okay, not really. It was more of a Red vs. Blue action thing. But even before anything could happen, "Hey, let's form an alliance and stop this whole feuding thing!" There goes the action. "Now that we are all friends, let's all becomes lesbians for the guy who transforms into a girl!" Um... maybe I'll stick with that... "Let's all be retarded and do nothing for the entire series." FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF!!!

Holy Emperor

Kampfer had a much better manga, IMO. The anime had the fan service ramped up, the story toned down, and a shit load of confusion bullshit (like the "ending fight").

"worst anime" is a hard label to use because there's so many ways to hate bad anime. I think the worst visual novel to anime is the non-existant Tsukihime one. Most retarded would go to Baka+Test!, most insulting...I can't even think of one.

I can't believe you two actually sat through Kampfer! I dropped that lead balloon during the second/third episode.

I liked the manga. It had a plot and interesting characters. I sadly hoped the show would keep it up but they changed a lot and made it dumb. But I still liked the characters so.. I kept watching.

On Kampfer: watched the entire first season. Still haven't seen Für die Liebe (or whatever the OAV's called), but I probably will at some point. Even if Kampfer was pretty shitty, it's one of the few nods the TF community has gotten from mainstream anime and I'm appreciative of that. Better still that he turns into a complete girl and not into a futanari. Only real complaint (TF-wise) is that they completely avoid him grappling with the identity question, "Do I prefer being the female Natsuru?" I agree that the show is pretty terrible in the end, but I largely blame the uninteresting subplot with the Entrails Animals and the psychopathic lesbian bitch Natsuru has a crush on. Natsuru's partner is sympathizable (and funny in a variety of scenes both as her quiet shy bookworm self and as her foul-mouthed gung-ho gunblazer self) and Natsuru's childhood friend is mega hot in her default (non-Kampfer) form.

Worst Anime Ever: to this day, it's still probably Ayashi no Ceres. Though the worst anime production (so like, including movies and stuff) I've ever seen is Shamanic Princess. And the worst / most horrifying development would have to be Episode 19 of KareKano where the budget just disappears and Evangelion's narcissitic director self-inserts himself into multiple scenes.

What is TF?

Well, sometimes you have to sit through a show to see how truly horrific it is. Then you can truly appreciate a good anime.

As of yet, I don't think I've had the misfortune to sit through an animé that truly made me cringe (well, aside from Koi Kaze, but that was mostly due to squick/"eek no my poor innocent mind!", itself a result of not knowing what I getting into). Of course, some series have elicited a few facepalm moments, but nothing too particularly heinous comes to mind.

I actually quite liked Kare Kano, even the finale to an extent. Though my perception may be colored by my brother who applauded the series' "innovation". ...Paper popsicle stick people, anyone? He loved that episode - not for the content, I imagine, but for its sheer audacity. Consider that one of his other favorite animé was Excel Saga, and you probably get the idea that he enjoys off-the-wall ventures.

Makes me wonder if he might enjoy Panting & Stocking with Garterbelt.

I liked Kare Kano but the end was... so disappointing. I really didn't like the end of the series.

Also TF was in reference to transformation. Transgender, I'm assuming.

That's a difficult question to answer. Other than 11 Eyes and Ookami, I don't think I've watched through an anime I felt was terrible for more than 3 episodes. I do think I can name a few worsts though.

Title that pissed me off more than any: MM!
Nothing more than hyperactive, fanservice loaded, cliche garbage. Watching this show truly enraged me.

Show that was so bad I somewhat enjoyed it: 11 Eyes
For the most part, this show was just hilariously bad. Plot twists were thrown out of the crators' asses. In the entire series, this show is all about this one guy's hatred for something. The entire bad situation the heroes are in is because of this. However, during one of the ending moments, without any warning or development, the guy's like "I changed my mind! I was wrong!" and everything returns to normal. I laughed my ass off.

Worst art: Sexy Commando Gaiden
This show wins the award for worst art. Despite that, Sexy Commando Gaiden is still one of my favorite titles and the best comedy I've watched. So it's the best in one area and the worst in another. I think the bad art adds a kind of flavor to it anyway.

I can't think of any other shows that stand out as being spectacularly terrible.

Uhmm maybe Wolfs Rain? That one was pretty freaking boring. And furry. Plus it had like 4 straight recap episodes iirc.

I have some fond nostalgia goggles tinted memories of Speed Racer, but yeah it was pretty bad. You have to watch this scene from one of the last episodes:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ufmiUR5at7Q

The part where he punches Speedy in the gut is obviously hilarious, but I officially laughed my ass off when he said the thing about becoming an international secret agent.

I do like those old school dubs though, where all the characters sound like 1950s radio announcers.

Why does speed look like a girl?

Bobobo-bo Bo-bobo.
The plot has something to do with a villain who uses his nose hair as a weapon or something.. And the artwork is bad. :/

Raptor Jesus
07-07-2011, 04:36 PM
Oh man. Blast from the past. Bobobo-bo-bo-bobo really was not about plot or artwork. It was purely for the outrageous events and humor.

I didn't like it much either, but yeah. Don't expect much from it.

I couldn't stand bobobo whatever. I remember everyone was so excited for it and I tried watching it. It was kind of awful in every possible way. Glad I didn't waste a lot of time with that one.

Doppleganger
07-10-2011, 01:07 AM
Bobobo is a gag manga, but most of the gags are sight/visual gags and/or parodies of stuff most Americans aren't familiar with.

Like, Bobobo himself is supposed to a parody of Fist of the North Star's Kenshiro. His personality is the opposite of Kenshiro, and visually he's supposed to be a ganguro. Mix this what a lot of random jokes/ideas made into characters or scenarios and you have the recipe for the anime's insanity.

It's very Japanese humour, so it's sort of miraculous if people from another culture take to it. The anime tried to make it a bit less regional by inventing jokes or localizing ideas, and it didn't always work. But it was a really good effort. Both versions do what they were intended to do - confuse the viewer with a barrage of arbitrary and hope people laugh at something.

When evaluating terrible shows, I prefer looking at examples that try something, and then fail. Or something written by an idiot, like Steins;Gate.

Oh wait! I remember why I (kinda) liked Bobobobobo. I went to an anime convention and the VA Richard Epcar showed us the blooper reel for it and like a dozen other shows he was in. It's all kept private but goddamn is Epcar hilarious. Too bad they will never release that stuff to the public. The Noein outtakes (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gct3k6tklhk&NR=1) were "mysteriously" released though.

X the Movie or X the TV series? Because I can't believe someone would call X the TV series one of the worst animes they've ever seen! 8O Not a personal Top 10% for them? Fine. Not a personal Top 50% for them? Whatever. But to say it's in one's bottom 10% or worse ... either you haven't seen very many anime yet and this just happens to have been one of your worst or else just WOW. :|

I mean ... seriously? :? You found their handling of the intriguing question "If you had to pick between saving the planet Earth at the expense of the human race or else saving the human race at the expense of the planet Earth, which would you pick?" supremely dissatisfying? I thought they did a pretty good job. Rational arguments were provided for both sides. The mentalities found on the Dragon of Earth's side suited what you'd expect of people who would place the planet before humanity. Vice versa, the personalities on the Dragon of Heaven's side displayed a strong affinity towards the human race, even when that race had wronged them horribly (e.g. Karen). Was it flawless? No. The animation was much too dark, making it difficult to see what was going on at times. The plot got kind of dumb towards the end with Fuuma and Nataku. (Nataku in general was kind of a dumb character imo.) But the ending? Epic and very appropriate. Without going into spoiler-details ... when I first saw it, I was furious with it, but not even 5 hours later I was already beginning to realize how it couldn't have ended any other way and how the ending was just so, so emblematic of ... okay, spoiler details.
Major Spoilers for X TV series, final episode spoilers!
... of everything the Dragon of Heaven sought. What does it mean to be the Dragon of Heaven? It means that you above all others prioritize human lives. That you would sacrifice everything in order to ensure their well-being. What greater sacrifice is there than one's own life? How else could Kamui have ensured that Fuuma survived this war but for him, Kamui, to lay down his own life and allow Fuuma to win? You could say it's deus ex machina-ey for the mystical energies to then crown Kamui the victor, sorta, as well as Fuuma, sorta, and have the planet survive plus have humanity continue to live happily on Earth too, but really, CLAMP had backed themselves into a corner they didn't know how to write themselves out of and it shows:

Manga: de facto discontinued, officially "still in progress" and has been set back by numerous earthquakes and other natural disasters in Japan making further publishings of their work impractical (a likely story )

X Movie: I've never seen it but apparently this one is terrible.

X TV: The ending I know where Kamui dies in order to save Fuuma and the rest of humanity.
I dunno. I respect your right to your opinion but ... how can you rate the anime as the worst you've ever recently seen!? I just don't understand. I mean, it gave us Sadame (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lwxbelTTsjE)! One of the best songs ever to come out of anime! Ever! That alone should have at least scooched the show out of your Crap Zone and into your Pretty Crappy But Not the Worst I've Ever Recently Seen Zone! ;-)

Unless what you recently saw was X, Kaiji, Minami-ke, and Planetes ;-) in which case I'd say, "Okay, yeah: of those, X is the worst." hahaha [/shameless]

I personally don't equate how much I liked/disliked an anime to how "good" it is. Personal preference goes into awarding my highest/lowest ratings, but for an anime that's completely solid technically, I'd still award it a 9/10 even if I hated it. I can't think of any particular examples, but I really would!

A related case, Mahoromatic was depressing and left a huge imprint on me. Its ending was horrifying and sinking, but the show overall was pretty poorly put together. Even with a memorable, vivid ending like Mahoromatic's, however, I wouldn't award the series anything more than a "Mediocre".

To go the route of hyperbole, Soylent Green wouldn't have been a good movie if it was about Charlton Heston opening a bag of Lay's, taking a bite and declaring "soylent green is people"!

I agree totally, and this is actually a really good example to me of being unable to separate how personal taste affects how you rate something. I actually really enjoyed most of Mahoro, but the ending was just so incredibly depressing it sucked all the joy out of the entire series, and as a result I ended up hating it, and I would rate it extremely low as a result.

or else just WOW. :|
I'm surprised that someone who's seen that many anime would say "You know, X ranks pretty low on my list of anime." And like I said earlier, I'm surprised that someone could fault a series for doing what so many other trite fiction stories fail to do and that is present a realistic conflict where beloved main characters do in fact die and stay dead. I mean, the premise of this story was that it was the war which would determine either the planet's demise or our species', a veritable Armageddon. It would have been insulting to present such a conflict as a everything-ends-happily story where every single character but one villain no one gives a shit about survives. For the story to feel real, there have to be real winners and losers in the various skirmishes. Everything can't possibly keep ending in ties. Plus, when you think about it ...
Major Spoilers for X TV series, includes list of who all dies
For an Armageddon story, not that many people died in X TV. It's been years since I've last sat down to watch it, but out of the seventeen main characters (fourteen + two priestesses + Kotori), "only" ten of them die:
Kotori
Seishirou (the Sakurazukamori)
Hinoto (the white-haired priestess)
Karen (the religious hooker)
Yuuto (the water mage in the white suit)
Satsuki (the computer girl with the Beast)
Sorata (the sassy monk)
Nataku (the clone)
Kakyou (the prophet)
Kamui
That's 10 out of 17. A majority, certainly , but still: a lot more people could have died in this purported Armageddon. It would have been silly if only, say, two or three people had died. (Say Kotori, Hinoto, and Kamui.) This would mean that every time people got into fights, they either were conveniently evenly matched or else they were magically able to survive after being defeated by a superior adversary. (And it's not like this didn't happen either! It's just that it wasn't the only way fights went down in X!)
I guess I would have to honestly ask if Raichu knows the story of Romance of the Three Kingdoms to see what he thinks of it. I think it's a masterpiece work, probably the best epic tale I've ever come across in literature, but a lot of beloved characters die in it. So it'd be interesting to see what he thinks of it.

I've not read any of George R. R. Martin's works, but I understand that they also involve the development of main characters who then die in later chapters or volumes. Has Raichu read any of these? And what does he think of them?

Anyway, it should be pointed out that I've written the bulk of these two posts as though Raichu had declared X to be one of the worst animes of all time. He did nothing of the sort, instead saying that it was simply one of the worst he's seen recently. And that could totally be the case. I don't know what all he's seen recently. Now if you tell me he's ranked X a 3/10 but he's ranked KateKyo Hitman Reborn a 10/10, then ...! ;-)

I personally don't equate how much I liked/disliked an anime to how "good" it is. People don't generally like or dislike a story for no good reason. They have reasons. Technical reasons. So I think it'd be very hard to separate a person's opinions about a show from that same person's assessment of the show's technical merits and flaws.

but ya, X just didnt do it for me. some of the fights were predetermined already. they would happen no matter what the main did. I wont say its the worst anymore. its just one I will watch and put away for a long while.

Man, I don't know how you can really separate the two. It's not that depressing things can't be good, but whether or not it's to your taste is another matter entirely.

I try to be considerate for people who might like what I dislike/don't care for. I want to make my reviews as useful as possible, so my recommendations are credible.

Disney-wise (since there was an explosion of Disney talk yesterday), I don't like The Lion King very much. It's my least favourite movie in the Disney Renaissance, and I usually zone out during discussions of it. Would I recommend it? Yes. Enthusiastically? Yep. Structurally, there's nothing wrong it, and the characters follow logical dynamics over the story. I just don't like it.

Some Jump stuff I've mentioned before too (like Toriko) are solid and widely acclaimed, but just aren't my thing. But I'd still try to look at it from both an enthusiast and disinterested perspective.

I like to believe I can take an impartial look at shows...I did judge debate for these past two years. And in my application to the Cal Redistricting Committee, the judges OK'd my impartiality essay (while submarining me on my "california appreciation" and "qualifications" ones).

So even if it's not possible to seperate those two, I feel I'm doing a decent job of it!
