I was just poking at my games to see which had the most play time (Sapphire won!) and found some neat and some devestating news....
Red: Save files still working, kinda worthless since I moved all my PKMN to Gen2.
Blue: see above
Yellow: Still working apparently I had restarted the game at some point an only got 3 badges O.o; maybe I should finish it...
Silver: Save intact but worthless since all was moved to Crystal.
Gold: Save files dead ;.;
Crystal: Save files dead oh god all of my old L100's and 10+ shinys whyyyyy ;_;!!!!! Its the newest of any of them what made it go byebye?!
Makes me sad that unless I get a newer games the same fate'll happen to my 3rd Gen'rs.....
Maybe in the future we'll get cloud POKéMON storage to allow our loved ones to live on forever and ever?

Blue: Feelin' fine.
Yellow: Somewhere in Texas.
Gold: Still on its original save file, full 'dex and fully operational.
Silver: Been reset a few times, but still running fine
Crystal: Yep, s'all good.
Haven't checked my third gen games because I don't know what DS case my Ruby version got stuffed in, but I assume all is good there.

Red: Its been missing for atleast 6 years.
Blue: Flooded with random L1oo's I never traded over to other versions. Glitchy
Yellow: Last saved before a gym battle with Blaine. Wtf?
Gold: Heck if I know. :0
Silver: Was working on completing the Pokedex, failed miserably.
Crystal: Saved w/ a odd group of L1oo's that I favored at the time. (including my first shiny catch, Aipom F).
After that everything went to hell. I never bothered completing my Sapphire version, or even bothered to purchase Ruby or Emerald for the sake of collecting the set. Fuck you pokemon gen3, bastards. ;;

Red: Fine
Blue: My brothers old game, super fine
Yellow: Viridian Forest, I must have started new game and lost interest
Gold: It asks me to reset the clock every time I start the game, but my save file is still intact
Silver: My brothers old game, it looks fine
Crystal: Works fine
I've been quite lucky with my games. I still have Stadium 2 and my N64 in perfect condition too :P I actually remember losing my Pokemon Red at my friends once. It went missing for ages, so my mum bought me another copy. It'd turned out I'd left the game in one of my pockets and it'd been put in the wash. Despite the fact the cartridge was pink and scratched up my save file was intact.

Red: Working fine, 100% completed dex including a Mew.
Blue: Saved 3/4 way through the game and was used to catch the other pokemon for Red. Working fine but has been reset a few times; missingo glitch was used so it's slightly messed but no worries.
Yellow: Looking good, no problems here but I haven't done anything but beat the game; no dex attempt in sight.
Silver: Good nick, no damage except the sticker has come off. Saves still active with about 50% dex completion.
Gold: Better nick, nothing wrong with it at all; got a team of shinies on my active team.
Trading Card: Epic deck in my active hand and a few decent pokemon from defeating the mexican mystery man a few times.
Crystal: Nothing wrong, working on all fronts.
Ruby: Nothing wrong, working.
Saphire: Game's a little buggy but still good. Probably pack up if I keep messing around with it.
Pinball: Pretty good, lots of pokemon. Pretty good scores.
Emerald: Nothing wrong, bad team though.
Diamond: Better game than Pearl and has all my competative teams on. Boxes are all full and all have IVs and EVs (through R4)
Pearl: Game sucks, played through, beat E4 and then haven't touched since. Massive penis boss.
Platinum: Sexy sweet. Finished all the frontiers and got all my cool shit in order, used a few times online but Diamond rules this roost.
Heart Gold: Recently acquired but I've been too busy to stop and play.
Soul Silver: Recently acquired but I've been too busy to stop and play.
Pokemon Stadium and Colosseum all look in good shape, but the consoles are somewhere else.
Lots of other old games here in my draw, Donkey Kong County 1 and 2, Mario, Super Street Fighter II, Speedy Gonzales. Good stuff.

Ruby Versions battery ran dry. Save still works but no time-based events anymore. The rocket has apparently launched 9999 times because of this x.x; It didn't take me into space to battle Jirachi or Deoxys either. Darn urban legends!

Crystal: Fine
Ruby: Same problem, dead battery
Pearl: Works fine but I still haven't beaten it
SS: works fine.

No Clue: Red, Blue, Yellow, Gold, Silver
Still Works: Ruby, Emerald, Pearl, Diamond, Heart Gold
If you or a friend you know owns a MicroSD card and a mod/hack-purpose flash cart, you can use SavSender to export your save files from Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum to your PC. This will save your save file for you, and then all you'll need to do is make sure you carry it along to your new computer each time you get a new one. Your Pokemon can be extracted from your .sav file using the appropriate programs (e.g. PokeSav).
Similar tactics with different hardware can be employed for saving your save files on Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald.
Want a legal, customer-friendly way of doing this? Petition Nintendo for it. That's about all you can do.

I don't think memory will be much of an issue, if at all anymore with portables.
The rate of efficiency with solid-state/flash cards is phenomenal these days compared to the cartridges of yesteryear.
I do like the idea of being able to connect to your DS to a computer or have a solid-state/flash drive on the 3DS so we can back up our save files though. Never can be too careful!
I still wanna know how the next Gen will affect the transferring of old Pokemon to it. I can't go through another Gen III that cut off R/B/Y/G/S/C...that almost killed my interest in Pokemon if it wasn't for my insane love for TCG at the time.

Don't worry about that, They've confirmed to be tradable to.
Myself? Ya. I certainly have. But I always use my sister's DS, seeing as, well, who buys two?

I bought the original DS, then I upgraded to Lite, but kept my old one. Thus, 2 DS's.

I upgrade...
But my old DS always ends up breaking. >_>
